Welcome to The 25th Annual National Poetry Slam! Slam Family and Fans... Welcome to The 25th Annual National Poetry Slam! Can you believe Nats is two and a half decades old? It’s been almost forever since NPS was in The Bay Area. Literally forever for some of you whippersnappers who were still a gleam in your parents eye when the very first (‘90) & fourth (‘93) NPS’ were held across the bay in SF. Well, let this serve as your welcome back; we sure missed you! This week, 72 teams from U.S. and Canada will be fighting tooth and nail for the favour of the discerning and eager crowds in Oakland, CA. During the day, participants and spectators will enjoy lots of themed open mics, workshops and showcases; then, once the sun goes down, poets will put their game faces on and get ready to defeat their opponents in the biggest literary battle the spoken-word movement has to offer. This intense five days of poetic sparring will culminate in the National Poetry Slam Finals on Saturday night, featuring the tournament’s final four teams as well as a showcase of some of the week’s best performances. For members of the 72 teams, we are excited to introduce you to your NPSOAK ambassadors at orientation! We’ll have 13 incredible volunteers that will be available to you for the week. They are here to give you helpful hints about places to go, resources, or just be a friendly voice in your hometown for the week. We have worked hard to make sure you are welcomed and loved during this festival and our ambassadors are just the perfect added touch to make sure you have some local family during your NPS experience! Your local organizers are thrilled to invite artists and audience members from all over North America to enjoy everything Oakland and the Bay Area has to offer. We invite you to listen, enjoy, and be energized by the work of hundreds of performers who will spend this week making Oakland stages their poetry home. Poets, volunteers, slam fanatics and listeners who just stumbled in to see what the excitement is, we’re so glad you’re here. Now, get ready to hear some poetry! If you’re reading this, then you’ve made it to the National Poetry Slam 2014! That means it’s time to get excited! Those of you who are rookies (or simply members of the audience who have never seen a live poetry slam before and may be asked to judge the poetry on stage) are probably thinking: Oh my god, I’m at the National Poetry Slam. What the hell is going on? So here, for your benefit, is A BRIEF GUIDE TO WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON, with some tips on how not to ruin everything for yourself and others: For Audience Members This may be a national event with a championship title on the line, but you matter way more than anybody talking into that mic tonight. We mean it—this poetry slam thing all started because we wanted to create a great new way for folks like you to love and connect with poetry. We wouldn’t be here without you guys. So thank you for coming and have a great time! Here are some tips for the week: DO listen, enjoy and love the poetry and the poets. If you hear something that changes your life, your brain, your everything, then after the bout is finished, you should go and tell the poet how much you appreciate their work! DO ask poets whose work you loved if they have any merchandise to sell. Many people will have chapbooks and CDs available for purchase, so that you can take some of their neuron-changing awesomeness home with you. DO be raucous and excitable. Your host will tell you all about how much poets love immediate and audible reactions during their poems: applause, gospel-esque whoops of appreciation, etc. Poets get nervous up on stage, even if they’ve been doing this for years, so don’t be shy about showing your support for the performers. DON’T make distracting, not-related-to-poetry noises. Don’t chat up new friends at the bar. Don’t answer your cell phone (because you remembered to silence it BEFORE the bout, right?). Try not to have an unrelenting coughing fit. DON’T take photos or videos of the poets if you don’t have a press pass AND the permission of the performer. Secret filming is creepy, and just straight-up rude. DON’T approach poets or coaches during the competition. They will have more time (and not to mention be much more fun to talk to) after the bout is done. For Judges Lucky you! Somebody has handed you a whiteboard, and now you get to judge how this whole game goes down. Your host is going to explain the rules to you very soon. Don’t be intimidated. It’s easy to be a really good judge if you just follow some simple guidelines: BE CONSISTENT. This is actually the only thing you need to know in order to be a good judge. Let’s talk about something we call “score creep.” For some reason, judges have a tendency to give out higher and higher scores as the night goes by. But what if you heard the best poem of the whole night during the first round? Here’s an easy trick: when the sacrificial poet goes up, pay extra attention. Write down the score you gave them somewhere you can easily check, like in the corner of your whiteboard—from now on, every time a poet reads a poem, ask yourself: was it better than the sacrificial poet? If yes, 8 higher score. If no, lower score. Easy, right? DON’T get so drunk that you can’t understand the DON’T be drunk and belligerent. Self control is nice, not to mention healthier for everyone. poetry. Are you blitzed? Pay extra attention. And maybe switch to soda for a few rounds. DON’T get all wrapped up in the competition. Odds are (literally) that you will not make it to DON’T let the audience intimidate you. Yes, the Finals, or even Semi-Finals. So rock your audience: the unwashed masses grumbling poem like you’re on Finals stage every about those perfect scores you just aren’t night, and if your team is eliminated early, shelling out. Remember, you’re the one with don’t forget to enjoy the other twenty“officially-sanctioned” good taste! three hours and fifty seven minutes of awesomeness per day that NPS has to ofDON’T get too focused on either performance OR fer. Remember that the most important team poetry. Remember that you are judging is “Team Poet,” and everyone you meet this performance art, and that the National Poetry week is on that team, including you. If you Slam champions need both stellar writing take the time to really listen to the other skills AND great performance chops. poems in your bout, you are more likely to have a good time, learn more cool things DON’T put appearance before art. Rate the poetry, about being alive, pick up some new tricks not the poet! to try in your own work and remember what poetry slam was created for: to make DON’T forget to have a good time! You can take audiences (which includes you) listen this whole judging thing as seriously as you to poetry. want, but in the end, the poetry (and being moved by the poetry) is why we asked you to judge in the first place. For Returning Competitors Welcome back! Now read the rookie advice. I bet you think that song isn’t about you. Well, it is. For New Competitors Welcome to the National Poetry Slam! You and more than 400 of your brand-new best friends are about to be the talk of the town for an entire week. If you play this right, it could be the best time of your entire life... until you come back next year, of course. Here are some tips to help DO share your poetry in cyphers. You can find these almost any place there are poets for the next couple of nights. DO make new friends. Competitors, audience, staff, volunteers: all these people are here because they love poetry. How often do you get to hang out with this many people all at once who care about art? It’s a great chance to meet amazing folks you couldn’t have found without this crazy game we play. DO practice good show etiquette: show up early for your bouts, listen to your bout manager and don’t harass your hosts. Clap for everybody who gets up on that stage! Clap for people you’re bouting against! Don’t be nice, but do be kind! Jen Cross, facilitator: Reaching all the way in, finding the words for our bodies’ untold stories. Some of the best poetry arises out of our bodies, and invites our listeners/readers back into theirs as well. Yet, in our mainstream US culture, we grow up knowing that most body stories are taboo-- stories of desire, of violence, of illness, of loss, of regeneration-and are not taught how to speak our bodies’ knowing, or are not heard when we do share our stories. How do we navigate a poetry of the body when we so often don’t even have access to the words for our experiences? In this workshop, writers will be invited to write into their untold body stories. We will cocreate a container in which we can generate and celebrate the risky and delicious writing of the body. Grand Live Slam Masters are perpetually the hardest working folks in Slam. You’ll be able to very easily walk from the host hotel to the venues or from venue to venue in a matter of 5 or 10 minutes. We’re talking under a mile at the longest (to that one, kinda far semi venue) with most distances being well under half a mile. We were serious about keeping everything concentrated in one area. That said, you might want to branch out and experience some of the other wonderfulness the area has to offer. First you should know that there are a lot of different cities here all bunched up together. The larger area is broken up by a rather large body of water called “the bay.” Oakland is in the East Bay along with Berkeley, Alameda and a few other tiny little cities called things like Emeryville and Piedmont. You might drive or ride right through those without even noticing. Across the bay to the west is SF (no one calls it the West Bay, no one will really care if you call it ‘Frisco, they’ll just know you’re not from here) and to the North, in the North Bay, are places like Marin and Sausalito. Keep going north and you get to wine country - specifically Napa and Sonoma are within day trip range. South of SF on “the peninsula” are Palo Alto (famous for Stanford), Menlo Park and Mountain View (where companies like Google and Oracle and EA are). Keep going South and you hit San Jose, about 45 miles from Oakland/SF. Second, you should prepare to be City Wise and Street Smart for your stay. Oakland is an incredible city, BUT IT IS A CITY that has its fair share of issues. We recommend that you follow a few basic tips to ensure that we keep each other safe and secure as possible. We are confident in the safety of the downtown area, but some basic common sense practices never hurt anyone! 1. After dark, stay on the main streets (Broadway, Telegraph, 14th) for the bulk of any walks you need to take to get to a location. 2. Especially at night, stay in pairs/groups- the great news is, all the venues are CLOSE and on main streets! Even still, stick together. 3. Be aware of your surroundings. %P /05 nBVOU ZPVS DBTI KFXFMSZ PS QIPOF JO public, especially while not paying attention to your surroundings. Real talk, that makes you a mark. 5. If you feel uncomfortable or get lost, find the nearest well lit store/venue and try to call someone from there to meet you or stay on the phone with you to help you find your way! Mass Transit Bus The Bay Area is served by several different transit agencies. In Oakland the busses are run by AC Transit and they’ll take you to various parts of “the Town” (that’s what Oakland is called by locals, SF is just that or “the City” and Berkeley is… well, “Berkeley”) and all over the East Bay. The area right in front of the host hotel on Broadway (between 11th & 14th) and 11th & 12th streets is a major bus hub. You can get from there to pretty much anywhere in Oakland or Berkeley, given enough time - this is the bus we’re talking about after all. One thing to note, if there’s an “L” after the number the bus makes limited stops, if there’s an “R” after the number it’s a “Rapid Bus” which is even more of an express. A couple routes that stop very close to the hotel that might interest you - take the 1 all the way up Telegraph Ave to UC Berkeley (get off as early as Durant and walk the last GFX CMPDLT UP HFU UIBU SFBM #FSLFMFZ nBWPS 5IF starts out on Broadway then goes over Grand Ave by Lake Merritt through the Grand-Lake neighborhood (lots of shops and restaurants on both Grand and Lakeshore Aves) to Piedmont Ave (lots more shops 36 and restaurants) and then meanders it’s way to downtown Berkeley (lots more shops, though if that’s your destination BART is much faster and more convenient). There’s also a free shuttle that runs up and down Broadway called the “B”. That does a loop between the Jack london Sq area at the southern end of downtown to Grand Avenue at the northern end of downtown. This will come in very handy for getting to and from that one kinda far (but not really) Semi venue. During the week the B runs until 7pm, on Fri/Sat it goes until 1am. BART BART is short for Bay Area Rapid Transit. It’s what your city might call the subway or el or Metro or some funky acronym and it’s the easy way to get from the host hotel to SF or Berkeley (and to/from OAK and SFO airports as well). The closest BART stop to the Marriott is 12th St/City Center, about a half block from the front door. Super convenient, no? Other Agencies If you’re travelling around SF you’ll probably get on Muni or you may want to revel in being a tourist and take a Cable Car. If you have folks to visit in San jose you’ll use CalTrain. Cabs There’s a taxi stand located on 13th St just east of Broadway, 1 block from the front door of the hotel. There are generally a few cabs there waiting for fares. Uber/Lyft/Sidecar All of the neuvo car companies are active in Oakland, take your pick. We like Uber ourselves. In each case just download the app to your phone if you haven’t already and give it a go. If you pick Uber use the code 63bws when you sign up to get a FREE FIRST RIDE (up to $30 value). Dahled will be your FB friend if you do, he promises. 37 Eats and Treats Name Address Cost ($-$$$) $- under $10 $$- $10-30 $$$- over $30 Desc Hours *It is safe to assume MOST places have Vegetarian/Vegan options!
