900 BC - David and Goliath
1919 Man O' War lost his only horse race by half a length to Upset. It was the
only loss in his 21 meet career. It was due to the actions of an inexperienced starter.
1969 Super Bowl: Joe Namath's underdog NY Jets toppled Baltimore Colts 16-7
1980 - Miracle on Ice - Olympic hockey game between the U.S. and Soviet Union. An event
that had political overtures' of democracy over communism and attitudes of amateurs vs. professionals.
1983 After 132 years of dominance, America lost the silver Auld Mug to Australia. They came
from behind 1-3 to win the next three races and take the trophy down under.
1984 Boston College upset U of Miami 47-45 with Doug Flutie’s 63 yd Hail Mary pass.
1984 Villanova (the underdog) stuns a much better Georgetown in the NCAA final.. Wins by
2 points after shooting an incredible 90% in the second half.
1991 Duke tops UNLV 79-77- NCAA semifinal game they beat undefeated UNLV by a team
effort with Laetner, Hurley, Grant Hill and Thomas Hill. Duke went on to win the national title
72-65.
2002 The Boston Celtics pulled off the greatest fourth-quarter comeback in NBA playoff history. Paul Pierce scored 19 of his 28 points in the final 12 minutes as Boston overcame a 21point deficit to beat the NJ Nets 94-90.
2004 Boston Red Sox coming from behind 0-3 and winning four consecutive games to defeat
the New Yo9rk Yankees in the American League Championship. And, they won the World Series.
2013 US takes back the America's Cup from New Zealand in a stunning come from behind
victory with eight straight wins in the hydroplaning AC72 catamaran. Helmsman Spithill said,
“It’s really about the team, man, On your own, you’re nothing. But, when you’ve got a team like
this around you, they can make you look great."
According to Jack Everett's article on page 18 of the ENSIGN® magazine, USPS was well
represented at the America’s Cup with members of many different squadrons, including Santa
Barbara, North Strand, San Luis Rey, Lake Norman, Kent Island, Santa Clara and San
Joaquin Delta, attending and volunteering for the event
Don't feel that you are "on your own". The USPS Educational program and your local Squadron instructors make you "look great". Expand your boating knowledge and tell your friends
about the value of being a member in this all volunteer organization with public outreach for
safer recreational boating. If you would like to know more about how a sailboat that can travel
at 50 mph, start with the USPS course on Basic Sailing. Next, enroll in MIT's or Cal Tech's MS
and PhD program in aerodynamics and fluid mechanics. It's all a mystery to me.
A pragmatic topic and tip: Start your next boating season's punch list now as you take apart
your boat and store it for the winter season. Keep a small pad of paper and pen handy in your
pocket. Jot things down as they occur. It will give you winter projects to work on and there will
be no last minute surprises when you launch next summer e.g. "Oh, I forgot that..."

ED RUCKLE SAFETY EDUCATION AWARD
PRESENTATION 2013
THE ED RUCKLE SAFETY EDUCATION AWARD was established in September 2012
by the Ruckle Family to honor Lt Ed Ruckle by supporting the Cape Cod Sail and Power
Squadron’s activities that promote boating safety.
When Ed joined our squadron he immediately volunteered to be the Porthole editor, received the Distinctive Communicator award for excellence for 2010 & 2011, introduced
the digital Porthole and its current magazine style.
Ed’s proudest achievement with CCSPS was becoming a Vessel Safety Examiner. He exceeded the national
average of inspections, launched a GO GREEN campaign for the year the stickers were green, thus increasing public awareness of our squadron.
Ed was full of good ideas to promote our squadron and boating safety.
There will be two Ed Ruckle Safety Education Awards given annually; one to the Member of the Year, based
on contributions to the squadron and sustained achievement. Criteria includes Vessel Safety Checks, Education – teaching and taking courses and community outreach. The USPS Chapman Award was referenced
when defining the criteria of the award. Jack Marsden spoke about the award at our September dinner meeting.
The second award is the Rookie of the Year, a new member who contributes via Vessel Safety Checks, education parades and/or other ways that enhance and promote CCSPS.
The award period is 1 April to 31 March to coincide with our fiscal year. The awards given tonight are for the 1
April 2012 – 31 March 2013 time period.
MEMBER OF THE YEAR: This long time member has consistently excelled in Vessel Safety Checks, being the second in District 14 for total Vessel Safety Checks. His civic
participation includes support of Sea Scouts Ship 76 and
marching in numerous parades. He has completed ID/W/
ME/EM/Sa/O/CP/S/P/AP/JN/SN and is a past commander
of Susquehannock Power Squadron in Pennsylvania.
It is an honor to present the Member of the Year award to
David Van Wye.
ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: This member relocated to Cape Cod last year
and immediately volunteered to manage our UPSP HQ database. Prior
to joining CCSPS she was a member of the Galveston Bay
Squadron and has completed O/S/P. It is an honor to present the Rookie
of the Year award to Lana Sands

Ren Nichols, owner of Allen Harbor Marine and Commodore Uniform, Harwichport, has been an avid CCSPS supporter for as long as anyone can remember. We're estimating 20 plus years. To celebrate this event, on September 13th,
fourteen Squadron parade marchers and the AHM Service Department staff gathered at Ren's office for a special USPS achievement award and gift certificate

Max Sarazin was honored in Thomas Gelsthorp’s recent column in the Cape Cod Times paying tribute to local veterans
he interacts with every day. “We observed Veterans day at 6
Bells with ringing my ship's bell, and then calling out names
of our deceased. Adjutant answered 'Here sir' and I rang bell
and chaplain gave surviving spouse a rose or placed it on the

Gordon Caldwell was the subject of a lengthy interview in
the Times this week among the JFK 50th Anniversary coverage. Gordon was a Times staff photographer for many years and he and his partner found themselves covering the biggest stories of their
careers while the new President and his family called Hyannisport their second home and some on
the biggest news stories of the era broke on their beat. They are responsible for some of history’s

Ben is remembered fondly as a longstanding squadron flag lieutenant, leading
the Pledge of Allegiance to open monthly dinner meetings—an office CCSPS reserves to honor its
military veterans; for his readiness to help plan a decade of annual August lobster bakes; and, festive in a formal black top hat, for his witty and jovial strong-arming of holiday dinner dance revelers
to donate generously to what is now the Art Kimber Annual Giving Fund benefitting Cape Cod charitable organizations that serve children and families. A member for 26 years, Ben’s significant contributions to the squadron were recognized by USPS with the awarding of 14 merit marks. Ben and
his wife Ruth, who remains a member, shared in their enjoyment as squadron members, each earning endorsements in Advanced Grade Seamanship.

(www.c-map.com). PC Planner allows users to plan routes and waypoints at home using chart chips and a

We welcome Joann Moran as our Supply Officer. Joann & Bill joined CCSPS earlier this year after Bill completed the ABC course. “Last year Bill took the first boating course and then joined the
squadron. (I was taking an Italian course that met the same day and time of the boating course) I
attended the first meeting with him, and I was impressed with the mission of the group and the
friendliness -- Joan Croft was really good. I decided to join, too, and will be taking my first course
in January.”

SUNSHINE NEWS
Walt Penczar was hospitalized after hurting his back at home and is now staying temporarily at
Mayflower for rehab work.
Jack Marsden was hospitalized off-Cape following a health scare and is now back home recuperating and catching up on a stuffed e-mail box.
We send get well wishes to for a speedy recovery!

Sea Scout Ship 76 Update

More than ever, Cape Cod Sail and Power Squadron members
are reaching out to Sea Scouts as envisioned in our national
agreement for sharing with the Scouts. Hugh Blair Smith
treated scouts to a sail on Buzzards Bay in MASHANTAM.
Commander Lee Johnson and Dave Van Wye accompanied
Skipper Tim Millar on regular sailings to teach scouts about
seamanship, piloting, and boat handling. Jim Jackson presented lessons on shipboard emergency medical practices.
John Crawford is Chair of the Ship 72 in Orleans and regularly
offers his barn as a place for joint meetings with Ships 76 and
72. Topping that, John hosted a beach cookout and boating
recreation at Pleasant Bay for the two ships .
Does that show CCSPS members are linked up with the Sea
Scouts? It sure does, but that is not all. Squadron members
Mary Lou Walsh, Charles and Gail Burke, Evan Croft, Walt
Penczar and Michael Leyden checked out the scout ship
SPIRIT on cruises from Wychmere Harbor to Stage Harbor.
Some of them also visited SPIRIT on other occasions to offer technical advice. Also, Ship 76
representatives have marched in Parades with the Squadron float and have assisted with other
events.
In addition to activities with the Squadron, the scouts have participated in many traditional
scouting activities, often joining up with Ship 72 in Orleans and Ship 40 in Falmouth. The three
ships comprise the Cape Cod Sea Scout Squadron with Al Beal, Commodore. Some of these
activities are: guiding car parking at Camp Greenough Council events, participating in the
Camp Caribbean weekend, hosting Chuck Wagon Derby obstacle courses for younger scouts,
and participating in Squadron Beaver Day when the eager beavers clean up the camp. Other
events have been a “Safety at Sea” weekend in New London where the scouts practiced fire
fighting, damage control, and swimming in a survival suit. An annual event is the Army Corps
of Engineers Canal Water Safety Day when Ship 76 helps to run several stations. A notable
nautical event was training at Coast Guard Station Provincetown where the scouts had a
chance to learn directly from our guardians of the waterways.
Ship 76 has made a good impression on the Cape and Islands Council. Accordingly, Skipper
Tim Millar has been asked to lead or participate in important regional or national events. He
sits on the Eagle Board of Review, Leads Trek outings for scouts visiting from other states, and
he worked at the National Jamboree in West Virginia this past July. He also served as Camp
Master at Camp Greenough from October 25-27 this year.
Punctuating the end of summer, on September 28 the scouts participated in a clean up of Red
River Beach sponsored by the “Coast Sweep” organization. That was a reminder that our activities on the water are seasonal. During the cooler weather the Scouts will switch over to land
based activities like advancement, and indoor meetings. But they will still have the boat yard
maintenance required of us all. SPIRIT will be over at the harbormaster’s shed on Bank Street
awaiting the attentions of its sailors.

Mastering marlinespike
Cockscombing
Originally used as chafing gear and covers for deck rigs and handrails, cockscombing is now used
as a decorative covering. The work can be beautifully accentuated if you are precise, pull each tuck
tight, position the front braiding, and make no mistakes.
A. Cut the length of line to be covered. Then select the type, colors and desired length of the cockscombing line. Secure the lines
with a twice- or thrice-turned sack knot and heat melt the ends.
B. Place the line to be covered in a vertical position and pull the
line cover strands down. For the left strand in the first set of tucks,
go right and around back, ending under the same strand (right half
hitch).
C. For the middle strand: go left and around back, ending under
the same strand (left half hitch).
D. For the right strand: go right and around back, ending under the
same strand (right half hitch). Be careful to pull each strand tight
after the half hitch.
E. From that point on, for the lowest strand on the right side: go
left and around back, ending under the same strand (left half
hitch).
F. & G. For the lowest strand on the left side: go right and around
back, ending under the same strand (right half hitch). To finish,
heat melt the ends or cover them with whipping.

MARINE APP
With Smart Charts AIS, a free smartphone app, recreational boaters can realize the safety benefits
of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) without having to buy a receiver or transmitter. The app
enable users to view AIS Class A & B traffic, and introduces a new cellular-based AIS capability,
called AIS Class E, that has been designed specifically for smaller, recreational craft. In addition to
identifying vessels, AIS provides information on their type, size, speed, and heading.
Smart Chart AIS has been released for Android smartphones and can be downloaded free of charge
from the Google Play Store. The app will be available for iPhones, iPads, and other tablets in the
coming months.

Upcoming Courses.
America's Boating Course® - America's Boating Course-3rd Edition is our primary
civic effort toward instruction in the fundamentals of safe boating. It's designed to
familiarize the student with the fundamentals of safe boating and qualify for certification in most states that require boating education before operating a watercraft.
The first 6 nights covers the Fundamentals of Safe Boating, including the National
Safe Boating exam. The last two nights covers An Introduction to Coastal Navigation.
The course is scheduled for 7 January at the Orleans Yacht Club.

We Need You!
to be part of a Practical On-the-Water Training team.
Many of our boating course students and others frequently ask me, "Do
you offer on the water training?" My answer should be yes, but without a
dedicated team, I have to say "someday".
We have the course material. USPS Practical On-the-Water Training (P
O-t-W) offers a safe way to provide real-world boat handling and operation experience and knowledge .
The intention of P O-t-W is to instruct, both on land and on the water,
new and slightly experienced recreational boaters proper ways to handle a powerboat.
Our P O-t-W team requires organizers, coordinators, classroom, and On-the-Water
instructors. These are some of the team jobs:
Site selection:
Identify and secure an on water facility to conduct
classroom and on water portions of the training.
Facility must provide area for docking practice and
be close enough to waterways with high speed
maneuvering opportunity.
Boat Wrangler:
Locate and obtain members boats to use for the on water training. Boat requirements: 20' to 22' center console or bow rider.
Caterer:
Organize and arrange for box lunches for team and students.
Course Layout:
Identify , layout, and designate waterways for high speed and l
ow speed maneuvers, anchoring, and mooring practice.
Classroom instructor:
Experienced USPS instructors.
On-the-Water instructor:
Certified POTW instructors.

Yarmouth Seaside Festival Parade

Mother Nature blessed us with a beautiful day for the parade. The sky was mostly sunny, the
temperature was 60° and the wind was 10 mph. Special thanks to Allen Harbor Marine for the
fine truck and the Yarmouth Recreation Department for the Knockabout sailboat and trailer. Ellie and Sam Lawrence from the Yarmouth Sailing Center magnificently dressed the boat and
trailer with mast, storm jib, signal flags and simulated blue water under the hull.
The Squadron marchers handed out a record 6,825 Life Saver Candies™ and 150 children's
Snoopy™ sea safety coloring books.

custom orders for grilled hot dogs,
hamburger or cheese burgers. The
buffet table was loaded with salads,
coleslaw, chips, Boston baked beans,
etc.. Carol topped the assorted dessert table with an award winning pineapple cake frosted with cream cheese.
A winter rest is now planned for your dedicated parade committee.
Come join us next year for one or all of the three parades. All you
need is enthusiasm to help promote your Squadron and a monogrammed colored white shirt and cap which can be ordered from

Join us for Holiday Merriment 12 December at the annual CCSPS Holiday Party. Thanks to
AO Jim Jackson for arranging our Holiday Party at the private Cummaquid Golf Club this
year. Festivities begin at 1800 with Holiday Cheer and at 1845 enjoy a delicious dinner of either Prime Rib or Baked Cod with your squadron friends followed by our traditional Holiday
Sing-A-Long, with music by Blind Navigator. The Bridge encourages as many members as
possible to attend, especially our newer members.
ART KIMBER HOLIDAY GIVING DRIVE
Our annual December Holiday Party collection is in
honor of P/D/C Art Kimber, SN. Every year Art rallied
each of us to bring cash and non-perishable food
donations for Cape Cod families in need.
Art’s community involvement touched the lives of
countless citizens and spanned many organizations
and decades from the 1970s until his passing on 23
June 2010.
We will continue the squadron’s annual tradition of
outreach in the spirit of Art’s good will to all.

Friday Cocktail Hour
We had an enjoyable gathering of everyone who stayed over at the hotel and a few more who
live close and stopped by just for the socializing. It’s amazing how many people can squeeze
into 2 adjoining hotel rooms when there’s food and drinks available! Following the gathering,
the socializing continued as the whole group walked across the street to one of New Bedford’s
well-known seafood restaurants and had a great dinner all together around a single huge table.
Saturday morning
Mike Dwyer, historian at the New Bedford Whaling Museum presented
very interesting talk on history of New Bedford and how seafaring and
maritime industries shaped New Bedford’s destiny. Because so many
New Bedford residents traveled the globe on whaling and trading
ships, the town became a wealth center
and, just as important, became a cosmopolitan multi-cultural city that enjoyed racial and ethnic tolerance and acceptance
long before the rest of America and was a mecca for freemen of all
races form and run businesses and advance themselves in life. It
was so interesting that quite a few attendees made a stop at the
museum to further investigate the local history.
Saturday afternoon
Presentation by R/C Donald Fiander, National Assistant Education Officer who delivered remarks on behalf of Chief Commander John Alter
and brought us up to date on many developments
in
the Education Department.
District 14 Bridge Officers presented reports on
their departments, accomplishments since the last conference and upcoming developments. DXO Mary Lou Walsh and DEO Jack Marsden
reported on the September Governing Board meeting they attended in San Antonio. A more complete
record of the conference will be in the next MA-RINER newsletter.

The Newport Holiday Harbor Lights Illuminated
Boat Parade & Blessing of the Fleet will be held
Friday, November 29 6:00 pm

Prizes will be given for best sailboat, best powerboat, most team
spirit, best decorated fishing boat and more. An awards
reception will be held immediately after the race.
Boats will rendezvous in the Goat Island Causeway area at 6:00 for a prompt 6:15 start. The parade will begin
traveling east (clockwise around Newport Harbor) leaving Newport Yacht Club to port where the judges will be
located. Boats will proceed towards downtown Newport leaving waterfront docks to port. The
route will continue towards Kings Park and lighted bell “3”. Boats will finish the last leg of the
circle headed North back towards the Goat Island Causeway area.
Participating vessels may continue around the harbor and also are invited to temporarily dock
at Newport Yacht Club for the awards ceremony and party. In the event of severe weather, call
