THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) The village is at the borderline between two cultures: the Italian and the German speaking area. THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) Based on an 18th century project, the spinning mill of Piazzo was realised at the beginning of the 19th century. It employed more than 300 people. THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) Because of its importance for local identity, the municipality decided to restore the building. But what to do inside? THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) Wine is a very important production nowadays. The municipality owns and manages its vineyard. It cannot be excluded from the project. THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) Vine development needs also innovation. THE SPINNING MILL IN PIAZZO (ITALY) A cultural landscape: • Environment • Savoir-faire • The arts • Industrial heritage HISTORICAL ORANGEGROVES IN MILIS (ITALY) An historical building restoration was the fist step of the project. Green tourism was the first idea, then a more complex and well-constructed aim emerged, matching local memory, the landscape, economic activities and technical innovation. HISTORICAL ORANGEGROVES IN MILIS (ITALY) Technical innovation (new and old species of oranges but also meteo and computerised irrigation system) plays an crucial role in the project. HISTORICAL ORANGEGROVES IN MILIS (ITALY) Orangegroves Horse breeding HISTORICAL ORANGEGROVES IN MILIS (ITALY) “Ortus Apertus” is an important and recent happening realised together with “Slow Food” organisation. Visits to local orangegroves with the involvement of their entrepreneurs, green walking in the countryside, visits of the Orange Museum: it is a sort of celebration for an “orange district”. HISTORICAL ORANGEGROVES IN MILIS (ITALY) A cultural landscape: • The orangegroves • The farm • Horse riding • Technical innovation • The surrounding artistic heritage ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) An ecologically disrupted environment originated the project: terraces were sliding and the local government decided to do something. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) An ecomuseum was created, to celebrate the importance of the terraces and to make inhabitants awake of the importance of a proper managed landscape. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) Many initiatives were set up to involve local people, including educational activity, aimed to reach also the so called “reluctant visitors”. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) An abandoned farm on a neighbouring enchanting hill was bought and then restored with summer camps for young people from many European countries. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) The Ecomuseum developed also its own vineyard, now run by a young couple, dwelling in the building as farmers and museum attendants. This progressive rediscovering of the terraces landscape and the Ecomuseum’s efforts towards a greater awareness of local heritage and distinctiveness, pushed up a group of 8 farms to create a consortium for a new wine label. This was considered a relevant success story in an area till then dominated by frustration about environment. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) Also individualist farmers, used a terraces inspired label for their wine brand. ECOMUSEUM OF THE TERRACES AND THE VINE (ITALY) A DOC certification (denomination of origin) was then released for the Ecomusuem’s wine. Not relevant in size production, it played a crucial role as a symbol.
