Unfortunately, probably due to general economic conditions in Australia, this very positive news failed to lift prices for what, on paper, seemed an outstanding catalogue of yearlings. Average price of $220,682 for the 330 lots sold was around $10,000 below the 2011 Easter figure and only marginally better than the 2010 average. The 2012 average represents a decline of more than seven percent compared to 2011 while the median price of $160,000 represents a drop of more than 11 percent since last year. “Stallion service fees for 2012 need to better reflect market conditions and members should keep in mind that fees for most are negotiable compared to advertised prices. ” Stallion service fees for 2012 need to better reflect market conditions and members should keep in mind that fees for most are negotiable compared to advertised prices. This was contested at the feature Warwick Farm meeting on Saturday, February 18 and was won by Danehill Dancer’s daughter Steps In Time, also a winner at our sponsors’ raceday. Breeding Awards Dinner – Scone, Saturday August 25 We take this opportunity to remind members and friends we will again hold the National and NSW Breeding Awards Dinner at Scone Racecourse in August during the weekend when many of you will be in the Hunter for the pre-season stallion parades. This is shortly after the 2011/12 racing season has concluded and the inaugural dinner held last year was both successful and enjoyable for the 110 who attended. Our special guests this year will be Gerry Harvey and Katie Page Harvey who make a tremendous contribution to our industry on several fronts. They will be interviewed during the evening which should be both entertaining and informative. Do not miss this great night – tickets are limited so contact our office for reservations at $150 a ticket. Invitations with full details will go out with the next (Winter) edition of Update. Tribute to the late Michael Ryan A.I. Court case decision soon Michael served on the Committee of TBNSW for some years, was President from 2005 to 2007 and for a time was also Vice President of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia. A decision in the legal challenge seeking to allow Artificial Insemination in thoroughbred breeding in Australia – opposed strongly by TBA and TBNSW – is expected to be handed down within weeks. We hope to be able to advise you of a favourable result in the next issue of Update and immediately through our website. Book winner After the Classic Yearling Sale a prize draw was conducted among members who had recently renewed to receive a copy of the magnificent book, Great Thoroughbred Studs of Australia. Lucky winners were Bridget Woodford-Smith and Peter Stewart of Huntworth Stud, Coolac. Trevor Lobb Goldners Race Presentation, Canterbury We were shocked and saddened greatly to learn of the all too early death of Michael Ryan at his home in Sydney in February as a result of a massive heart attack. Racing and breeding thoroughbreds was a passion for Michael who became actively involved as a young man in the 1980s when he formed a number of breeding partnerships which owned such outstanding mares as Canny Lass, Midnight Fever, Mapperley Heights, Strawberry Fair, Frivolous Lass, Khaptivaan, Cena and Marauding’s dam Biscalowe. In more recent years Michael Ryan bred, on his own account, primarily for the yearling sale market and among his astute broodmare purchases was the blue hen Procrastinate. He also bought and raced a number of yearling fillies, notably multiple stakeswinner Besame Mucho, trained for him by longtime friend Bart Cummings. Appropriately, the last horse to carry his colours was Queensland Guineas winner and up-andcoming young sire Rothesay, bred in partnership with the late Susan Suduk and out of Schiaparelli, a daughter of Canny Lass. Bloodstock consultant Philippa Duncan was for many years Michael’s trusted advisor and manager of his bloodstock interests, a service he needed as he was fully occupied in his professional career as a prominent Sydney lawyer specialising in complex compensation cases involving clients who had often suffered catastrophic injuries. Michael Ryan’s legal mind was also applied for the benefit of our industry which faced a number of significant problems during his time on the Committees of TBNSW and TBA, problems Michael was instrumental in solving, particularly in keeping the States together in a united association. He was a popular personality, widely respected and with a great sense of fun – we are the poorer for his passing. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 5 Timeform Australia’s review of the Sydney Autumn Carnival By Gary Crispe and Alex Steedman The 2012 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival comprising 19 Group One races ran for six weeks from Randwick Guineas day until Sydney Cup day, showcasing some of Australia’s most exciting and outstanding thoroughbreds. the George Moore Jockey’s Medal for the carnival, Victorian riders Danny Nikolic and Michael Rodd did manage two Group One wins apiece. Sydney Cup day was perhaps the highlight of the carnival with the three highest Timeform rated performers racing on that day: More Joyous, Atlantic Jewel and Pierro. “Gai now shares the training record with her late father, the incomparable Tommy Smith. ” There is little doubt that at any other time in Australian racing, More Joyous would have been acclaimed a champion in her own right, such as Sunline and Makybe Diva were during their racetrack careers. More Joyous (Nash Rawiller) returns after winning the Queen of the Turf Stakes As far as Timeform ratings are concerned, it has been a long time since a carnival produced so many high rating performances headed, of course, by the outstanding gallopers More Joyous and Atlantic Jewel who shared top billing with a rating of 128. They were well supported by top performances from unbeaten juvenile Pierro (Timeform rated 127), Mosheen (124) and Manighar (126). Champion trainer Gai Waterhouse and stable rider Nash Rawiller had their most successful carnival for some time, dominating with seven Group One wins; Laser Hawk (1 win), More Joyous (3 wins) and Pierro (3 wins). The remainder of the Group One spoils were spread evenly with Peter Moody and Robert Smerdon registering two wins each courtesy Manighar and Mosheen, respectively, and while Nash Rawiller stole the show receiving NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 It is unfortunate that she has had to share the limelight with first Black Caviar and now Atlantic Jewel but that should in no way detract from her outstanding achievements. Like Peter Moody with Black Caviar, Gai Waterhouse deserves great credit for the way she has managed the career of More Joyous. Never a gross type but always somewhat fragile early in her racing career, not until now as a five-year-old have we seen the fully mature, stronger More Joyous. Gai has nurtured this mare into the outstanding galloper she is today. A winner of eight Group One races, nine Group Two and two listed races she is now dominating her rivals of both sexes at distances from 1200m to 2000m. More Joyous was unbeaten in all four runs during the carnival, winning the Group Two Canterbury Stakes (1300m) fresh up then the Group One Queen of The Turf Stakes (1500m), Group One Doncaster Handicap (1600m) and Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). More Joyous came of age winning the Group One Doncaster Handicap, the toughest 1600m race on the Australian racing calendar, under a near record weight of 57.5kgs for a mare. Only the great Sunline (58kgs, 2002) and Cuddle (59kg, 1936) have carried more weight to victory in Doncaster history. It was a record equalling seventh win in the Group One Doncaster Handicap for Gai and her first since Grand Armee in 2003, quite an amazing performance from a trainer first licensed just 20 years prior. Gai now shares the training record with her late father, the incomparable Tommy Smith. Racing’s first lady had previously won the Doncaster with Pharaoh (1994 and 1995), Sprint By (1996), Secret Savings (1997) and Assertive Lad (2001). But on Sydney Cup day, More Joyous took on another challenge, tackling a quality Group One Queen Elizabeth Stakes field over 2000m, a field containing several Group One winners of races such as the Melbourne Cup, Australian Cup, BMW, Epsom Handicap, Doncaster Handicap, New Zealand Derby and Rosehill Guineas, to name a few. In short it was a top class 2000m race. For some, there were still unanswered questions over her ability to run a strong 2000m after she failed in So You Think’s historic second Cox Plate win in 2010, her only previous attempt at that distance. More Joyous was forced to take up the role of pacemaker when rival riders handed up the lead. But once into her rhythm, the race was as good as over, skipping clear in the closing stages to win by over two lengths from the much improved Manighar. More Joyous was assessed to have run to her Doncaster – winning Timeform mark of 128, a figure held up through the form and ratings profiles of other runners in the race. 7 Timeform Report continued… joining Lowland (1969), Jandell (1975), My Blue Denim (1981) as well as Dinky Flyer. Outstanding three-year-old filly Atlantic Jewel resumed from an injury enforced spell on Derby day with an effortless display in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes for fillies and mares over 1200m. It was the filly’s first start since her outstanding win in the Group Two VRC Wakeful Stakes over 2000m where she returned the highest Timeform rating for a spring three-year-old in recent memory – 128+, however, she confirmed her reputation as the “heir apparent” to Black Caviar taking out the Group One All Aged Stakes over 1400m at Randwick on the final day. Atlantic Jewel The figure is just above the mid range of values suggested by the historical race analysis. It was a most impressive victory and she joined Iko (1980) as the only horses to have won the Doncaster Handicap – Queen Elizabeth Stakes double in the same season and certainly the first mare to achieve the feat, something even the great Sunline could not achieve in 1999. Gai now joins her late father Tommy Smith as the only trainers to have prepared gallopers to achieve this unique double. More Joyous became the first mare to win the Queen Elizabeth Stakes since Dinky Flyer in 1987 and the fifth mare overall since 1950, Unbeaten in seven starts, the All Aged Stakes was Atlantic Jewel’s first attempt at open weight-for-age company against older horses of both sexes but she did not disappoint, registering what many believe to be her best win yet. Affair get too far ahead of her and Rodd made Atlantic Jewel keep in touch from the outset, something that Rodd remarked after the race had not suited the filly, racing out of her comfort zone. Even then, topping the rise, Rain Affair skipped several lengths clear and just at that point, the task of running him down looked considerable. But that is where the class of Atlantic Jewel came to the fore. The moment of truth that all racegoers were waiting for had arrived. Atlantic Jewel responded to the challenge, quickly accelerating to gather in Rain Affair and beat that gelding by over a length in near record race time of 1:21.82. Atlantic Jewel was assessed to have run to her previous peak Timeform rating of 128, a figure held up by the Rain Affair’s consistent rating performances and supported by a historical analysis of the race itself. Atlantic Jewel faced a totally different assignment in the All Aged Stakes than she is accustomed to, a task made more difficult on race morning when multiple G1 winner King Mufhasa was withdrawn. Also underpinning the significance of her win is the fact that three-year-old fillies don’t win the All Aged Stakes. The last one to do so was Valicare in 1926 and many have tried unsuccessfully since. His scratching from the field changed the dynamics of the in-race tactics for rider Michael Rodd as it left him with no runner that was going to tag the speedy Rain Affair, her main danger, and take Atlantic Jewel into the race. Atlantic Jewel has now won from 1100m to 2000m including twice at Group One level at 1400m and 1600m. Instead, it was left to Atlantic Jewel to perform that out of character role herself, something that made this win special. Atlantic Jewel could not afford to let Rain She will now go for a spell with the Group One Cox Plate over 2040m as her main goal in the Spring of 2012. It has been a long time since Sydney racegoers have seen a juvenile of the calibre of the unbeaten Pierro. By claiming the Group One Champagne Stakes over 1600m at Randwick on the final day, the Gai Waterhouse-trained youngster vindicated his trainer’s faith in him by going through the autumn undefeated. Pierro became just the sixth juvenile in history to win the Golden Slipper-ATC Sires’ Produce Stakes-ATC Champagne Stakes Triple Crown, joining an elite group comprising Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977), Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), and Dance Hero (2004). Pierro also provided Waterhouse with a record her late father Tommy Smith didn’t achieve and that was to win the juvenile Triple Crown, something she has now done twice – quite a remarkable achievement. Waterhouse also trained Dance Hero. More Than Ready's daughter Samaready was an autumn star in Melbourne, winning the Blue Diamond Stakes. 8 Pierro now joins Baguette as the only undefeated Triple Crown winners but it should be pointed out that when Baguette won the Champagne, the distance was 1200m not today’s distance of 1600m. It is also significant that Pierro’s juvenile campaign continued to mirror that of former great two-year-old Luskin Star who in 1977 also won the Breeders’ Plate, Silver Slipper Stakes, Todman Stakes, and Triple Crown – the only two juveniles to win those six features races. Following the win Pierro took his Timeform rating to a new level of 127. Pierro again showed lightning acceleration to easily account for Dear Demi, a convincing winner of the time-honoured Fernhill Handicap last timeout under 58kgs and running the second fastest race time since the event was changed in distance to 1600m from 1200m in 1972. His winning margin on a good to dead racing surface was the biggest in the last 20 years. Coincidentally, Dance Hero holds the race record at 1:34.75. Pierro now rates within a pound of Luskin Star’s juvenile 128 rating – a mark that makes him the highest rated juvenile in Australasia since 1977. Classy three-year-filly Mosheen opened the carnival winning the Group One Randwick Guineas over 1600m, setting the foundation for what was to follow both in Timeform ratings and historical terms. The win by Mosheen made her the first filly to win the Randwick Guineas since its inauguration in 2006, replacing the time honoured Canterbury Guineas which dated back to 1935 and had been run over 1900m. In addition, Mosheen is the first horse to have won the Australian Guineas – Randwick Guineas double as well as the first filly to win the treble of Group One races, VRC Oaks- Australian Guineas-Randwick Guineas, something we may not see achieved again for a very long time. It takes an exceptional filly to win those three races and Mosheen has certainly proved herself that, however, to some extent she still lives in the shadow of the unbeaten Atlantic Jewel who treated Mosheen with such contempt in the Thousand Guineas over 1600m at Caulfield last October. “In its short history the Randwick Guineas has quickly made a name for itself as quality race, capable of producing good horses. ” Admittedly, Mosheen has improved a great deal since then, but so, too, has Atlantic Jewel and even trainer Robert Smerdon who regards Mosheen as the best horse he has trained, is not keen to engage Atlantic Jewel anytime soon. In its short history the Randwick Guineas has quickly made a name for itself as quality race, capable of producing good horses. The 2011 renewal won by Ilovethiscity has not produced as many subsequent winners as the other renewals have but Queensland Derby winner Shootoff was in that field. The 2010 renewal seemed stronger as it produced subsequent Group One AJC Derby winner Shoot Out, Group One Epsom Handicap winner Captain Sonador, Group One Rosehill Guineas winner Zabrasive, Group One South Australian Derby winner Kidnapped and Group One Railway Stakes winner Gathering. The previous four renewals have produced nine subsequent Group One winners and 20 overall stakeswinners – not bad for a race only in its infancy. The final assessment of the race was not straightforward. In this instance the margin is not reflective of the merit of the win plus second and third placegetters, Said Com and Laser Hawk who were both coming off restricted class races, factors tending to hold the race back to a value under the five year average. Other factors in the mix when assessing the quality of the race are a bunched finish, the fact Mosheen was coming off a career peak effort at her previous start 14 days prior – and those efforts are seldom backed up next start. Mosheen suffered buffeting during the race that cost her valuable ground further exacerbated by the even paced tempo and the provisional higher ratings that second and third horses ran to compared to recent form. Consequently Mosheen ran to a 115+ Timeform rating, some nine pounds under her previous peak 124 figure while Said Com and Laser Hawk ran to vastly improved ratings of 118 and 117, respectively. Mosheen rounded out her autumn campaign with a win in the Group One Vinery Stakes over 2000m at Rosehill where she defeated subsequent AJC Oaks winner Streama. The lightly raced Laser Hawk made rapid improvement during the autumn that saw him place in the Group One Randwick Guineas, score a solid win in a strong renewal of the Group One Rosehill Guineas and finish a game third in the Group One Australian Derby. Laser Hawk gave champion trainer Gai Waterhouse her second Group One Rosehill Guineas winner with an impressive display, holding out Kiwi gallopers Ocean Park and Silent Achiever in a close finish. Waterhouse, who won the 2002 Rosehill Guineas with another rapid improving threeyear-old, Carnegie Express, rates Laser Hawk as a superior galloper, saying she has never trained a three-year-old that has shown more potential, likening him to another talented galloper, Victoria Derby winner and Melbourne Cup placed Nothin’ Leica Dane. Laser Hawk is a half brother to Waterhouse’s former grand weight-for-age galloper Desert War, a six-time Group One winner from 1600m to 2000m, but significantly beaten at his only two attempts at 2400m. Mosheen defeats Streama to take out the Vinery Stakes. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 Laser Hawk’s Timeform ratings rise has been spectacular, taking his rating from 101 fresh up at Rosehill in restricted class some weeks 9 Timeform Report continued… Multiple Group One winner Metal Bender upset a top class line up in the Group One George Ryder Stakes (1500m). Starting at big odds he held off Rekindled Interest and Secret Admirer in a close finish. Metal Bender rated to his best in the win at 124 but unfortunately fell victim to injury again and had to be spelled. Master Of Design upset Rain Affair to narrowly win the Group One T. J. Smith Stakes over 1200m at weight-for-age, rating to a new Timeform peak of 120, a figure that placed the 2012 renewal below the race five year average. NSW-bred Niwot finishes powerfully to take the Schweppes Sydney Cup. back, to 123 last Saturday, a figure sitting a pound below star Kiwi Jimmy Choux’s victory in the 2011 Rosehill Guineas renewal. At that level Laser Hawk is assessed as one of the better winners of the Rosehill Guineas in the last 25 years, placing him on par with previous winners Metal Bender (2009), Sky Heights (1999) and Tie The Knot (1998). The mighty three-year-old Octagonal’s 1996 renewal victory over Saintly and Nothin’ Leica Dane where he rated 125 still remains the highest rated Rosehill Guineas in the last 25 years. Laser Hawk went on to place third in the Australian Derby over 2400m, a meritorious effort considering he suffered a leg injury during the race. narrowly defeating Tulloch Stakes winner Polish Knight and Laser Hawk. A 121 Timeform rating fits just under the five year average for the race but right in the mid range of possible values suggested by historical race analysis. The final figure was held back slightly by Polish Knight who came off a below par win in the Tulloch Stakes and Laser Hawk who, after the race, was found to have bone chips in his knee. “ The Team Hawkes-trained galloper had put in a number of encouraging displays prior to the Sydney Cup against weight-for-age company. ” Visiting Melbourne trainer Pat Carey took the Group One Australian Derby with the lightly raced Ethiopia, becoming the first maiden to win the Derby at Randwick since the Tommy Smith trained Silver Sharpe back in 1970 and the first since the Derby was transferred to the autumn in 1979. It is rare indeed for such a lightly raced threeyear-old, still a maiden, to win the Australian Derby in the autumn as the race comes towards the end of the three-year-old season and most, if not all of the promising stayers, have disclosed form by that stage. He joins a small but select group of maidens to have won a Group One Derby in recent times, also joining Fire Oak (1990) and Redding (1992), both of whom won the Victoria Derby as maidens. Both Ethiopia and Polish Knight are very lightly raced for stayers and have shown rapid improvement in their ratings profiles so should make their presence felt as four-yearolds. In particular, Ethiopia promises much more next preparation as he is open to considerable improvement. By 2002 Victoria Derby winner Helenus, Ethiopia came into the Australian Derby largely unexposed having just three race starts prior, his last when second to Highly Recommended in the Group Two Alister Clark Stakes (2040m) at Moonee Valley, rating to 111. However, Ethiopia was assessed as running to a new Timeform mark of 121 in the Derby, NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 Of the older horses, the rejuvenated Manighar continued his dominance in weight-for-age races winning both the Group One Ranvet Stakes and the Group One BMW, stretching his Timeform rating to 125 in the BMW, up a pound from his Ranvet Stakes win. Manighar then went to 126 after running an unlucky second to More Joyous in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes. As always, the time-honoured Sydney Cup over 3200m is a great way to close the Sydney Carnival and Niwot relished the drop back to handicap conditions, running to his career peak Timeform figure of 120. The Team Hawkes-trained galloper had put in a number of encouraging displays prior to the Sydney Cup against weight-for-age company, having just missed out on the placings in both The BMW and Ranvet Stakes. Niwot rising to the 3200m looked well suited under handicap conditions. He did not disappoint, settling midfield on the fence prior to peeling second deepest around the turn before striking the front 150m and subsequently winning the Group One Sydney Cup by a long neck from a gallant Efficient. Niwot’s performance rates well above the previous five year winning average of the event which stands at 116 with the highest rated winners in that time Jessicabeel (2010, 117) and No Wine No Song (2008, 117). Efficient's impressive second was rated at 125 which is the highest figure recorded in a Sydney Cup since Tie The Knot registered a five length victory, rating 127, in the 1999 renewal. Tie The Knot's dominant display as an odds on favourite was assessed at 127. A second tilt at Melbourne Cup success is expected for Niwot this upcoming spring with the Galileo gelding having finished eighth in last year’s renewal. Niwot would have to buck the trend of latest Sydney Cup winners with only two during the past 10 years going on to contest the Melbourne Cup in the following spring. 2004 Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva claimed the rare double that year while 2009 Sydney Cup winner Ista Kareem was a well beaten 15th behind Shocking. 11 2012 Australian Timeform ratings as at May 4, 2012 Timeform Ratings – 2 year old Rank Horse 1 Pierro 2 Samaready 2F 3 Epaulette 2C 4 All Too Hard 2C 5 Limes 2C 6 Snitzerland 2F 7 2C Dear Demi 2F Driefontein 2F Raceway 2R 10 Shelford 2C 11 Hussousa 2F 16 18 Meidung 2F Narcissus 2C No Looking Back 2F Tatra 2C Cavalry Rose 2F Ichihara 2F Cambiaso 2C Choice Bro 2C Flying Snitzel 2F Jimando 2C Sizzling 2C Lonhro (AUS)-Miss Right Note (IRE) (Daylami (IRE)) MS GAI WATERHOUSE More Than Ready (USA)-Samar (AUS) (Secret Savings (USA)) MICK PRICE Commands (AUS)-Accessories (GB) (Singspiel (IRE)) PETER SNOWDEN Casino Prince (AUS)-Helsinge (AUS) (Desert Sun (GB)) MICHAEL & WAYNE & JOHN HAWKES Commands (AUS)-Rum Cruise (AUS) (Canny Lad (AUS)) PETER SNOWDEN Snitzel (AUS)-Monte Rosa (AUS) (Fraar (USA)) GERALD RYAN Dehere (USA)-Shirley (AUS) (Zabeel (NZ)) CLARRY CONNERS Fastnet Rock (AUS)-Follow Gold (AUS) (Export Price (FR)) MS GAI WATERHOUSE More Than Ready (USA)-Claws (AUS) (Flying Spur (AUS)) MS GAI WATERHOUSE Redoute’s Choice (AUS)-Taimana (NZ) (Woodman (USA)) JOHN O’SHEA Husson (ARG)-Petousa (AUS) (Redoute’s Choice (AUS)) JOHN P THOMPSON Bernardini (USA)-Amish (AUS) (Canny Lad (AUS)) PETER SNOWDEN Exceed And Excel (AUS)-Hasna (AUS) (Snippets (AUS)) PETER SNOWDEN Redoute’s Choice (AUS)-Mirror Mirror (AUS) (Dehere (USA)) MS GAI WATERHOUSE Hussonet (USA)-Slovakia (USA) (Danzig (USA)) PETER SNOWDEN Charge Forward (AUS)-Alberton Rose (NZ) (Danske (NZ)) GERALD RYAN General Nediym (AUS)-Cut A Dash (AUS) (Whiskey Road (USA)) ALLAN DENHAM More Than Ready (USA)-Flying Alpha (AUS) (Flying Spur (AUS)) DANNY O’BRIEN Choisir (AUS)-Ladidi (AUS) (Palace Music (USA)) J G SARGENT Snitzel (AUS)-Hula Flight (NZ) (Hula Town (NZ)) GERALD RYAN Commands (AUS)-Finko (IRE) (Caerleon (USA)) TONY MC EVOY Snitzel (AUS)-Admirelle (AUS) (General Nediym (AUS)) KELSO WOOD Timeform Ratings – 3 year old Rank Horse PR TFE $2,941,100 127 1 Sepoy $1,225,100 123+ 2 Atlantic Jewel 3F Foxwedge 3C $242,500 122 $418,700 121p 4 Helmet 3C $84,400 119? At time of writing we know of 12 and no doubt there will be others which we will cover in the Winter issue of Update. Following, listed alphabetically, is a brief review of this exciting group of newcomers: Arlington Brown horse – foaled 2004 Standing at Lincoln Farm, Blandford – FEE (inc. gst) $5,500 Hail To Reason Roberto Bramalea Red Ransom (USA) Damascus Arabia Christmas Wind Hold Your Peace Success Express (USA) Au Printemps Savannah Success Semipalatinsk (USA) Alma Mater Sweetie One of the finest yearlings I have seen, Arlington topped the 2006 Magic Millions sale when he realised $1.55 million and over six seasons of racing in Australia and New Zealand proved himself very talented, sound and durable. He won five races – three in Sydney and two in New Zealand including the WRC Douro Cup – from 1100 to 1800m. and placed 18 times but his six stakes placings probably give the best indication of his ability. He was second in the Group Two Japan-New Zealand Trophy, third to Weekend Hussler and Triple Honour in the Group One Randwick Guineas and third at two years in the Canonbury Stakes at Randwick. Arlington is a son of deceased Red Ransom, whose 104 black type winners throughout the world include a number like Charge Forward, Domesday, Ekraar and Red Dazzler who have made a mark as sires around the world. The female half of Arlington’s pedigree is just as impressive – he is a half-brother to successful young New Zealand sire Savabeel (Cox Plate, AJC Spring Champion Stakes, etc and $2.7 million in prizemoney) from dual Group One winner Savannah Success (New Zealand Oaks, STC Storm Queen Stakes, AJC Surround Stakes, etc). His second dam Alma Mater, a mare linebred to Star Kingdom, won the AJC Adrian Knox Stakes. Benfica Bay horse – foaled 2008 Standing at Darley, Aberdeen – FEE (inc. gst) $11,000 Zabeel Octagonal Eight Carat Lonhro Straight Strike (USA) Shadea Concia Danzig Danehill (USA) Razyana Hot Star Way (GB) Ivy Cottage Country Charm Darley newcomer Benfica is one of the best entire sons of champion sire Lonhro from Hut, a good Sydney winner and a stakes placed daughter of Danehill. Benfica recorded three wins from 1100 to 1600m. at two years in Brisbane and Sydney, earning prizemoney of $467,150. Highlight of his brief racing career was in taking the Group One T.J. Smith Stakes in Brisbane. There is a good deal of depth in Benfica’s female pedigree as his stakes placed NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 second dam Ivy Cottage won five races – three on Sydney tracks – and is a Star Way half-sister to outstanding mare Riverina Charm, a four-time Group One winner of such events as the Rosehill Guineas, Canterbury Guineas and VATC Thousand Guineas. Riverina Charm has gone on to breed stakeswinners Sarwatch and Paolino (dam of Mirandola) while another major recent winner from the family is Neroli (7 wins and $772,050). 13 New Sires 2012 New Sires 2012 Dream Ahead (USA) Bay/brown horse – foaled 2008 Standing at Emirates Park, Murrurundi – FEE (inc. gst) $27,500 Known Fact Warning Slightly Dangerous Diktat Sadler’s Wells Arvola Park Appeal Young Generation Cadeaux Genereaux Smarten Up Land of Dreams Green Desert Sahara Star Vaigly Star This big, good-looking brown horse was one of Europe’s best two-yearolds in 2010 when Timeform gave him the high annual rating of 128 after winning two Group One tests, the Prix Morny (1200m) at Deauville by nine lengths and the Middle Park Stakes (1200m) at Newmarket. The Cartier Champion European Sprinter at three years when given the high Dream Ahead, who shuttles from Ireland to Emirates Park Stud, Murrurundi, trained on at three years in 2011 to defeat Star Witness and other star sprinters in the Newmarket July Cup (1200m) and captured two other Group Ones, the Haydock Park Sprint Cup (1200m) and at his final start, the 1400m Prix de la Foret at Longchamp beating the great mare Goldikova in race record time of 1m 18.1s. with a lot of Australian mares and with names like Sadler’s Wells, Roberto, Annual Timeform rating of 133, Dream Ahead won five Group Ones from only nine career starts. From the American outcross male line of In Reality, Dream Ahead should work Sharpen Up and Danzig in his background he offers many opportunities to linebred to these major influences. After defeating Foxwedge first up in the ATC Run to The Rose, he rushed home late to be second to Manawanui in the ATC Golden Rose, finishing well clear of Helmet and Foxwedge but problems spoiled the rest of his spring campaign last year. Gooree Park-bred Smart Missile was a horse of tremendous but largely untapped ability who demonstrated great brilliance and class in a short, six start racing career at two and three years. After debuting in the spring of his two-year-old season with an impressive victory in the ATC Breeders’ Plate in smart time, Smart Missile returned in the autumn of 2011 to down Blue Diamond Stakes winner Sepoy and Foxwedge on a wet Rosehill track in the ATC Todman Stakes (1200m) in 1m 9.91s, thus confirming himself as a top contender for the Golden Slipper. It is now history that he was sensationally scratched at the barrier leaving Sepoy to take the sire-making race. By champion Australian sire elect Fastnet Rock and a grandson of Danehill, Smart Missile is a half-brother to stakeswinner Kiss From a Rose from Comical Smile, a half-sister to the dam of former top sprinter Northern Meteor, now a promising young sire at Widden Stud. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, easily defeating Manhattan Rain and Zipping. He then followed up, switching back to 1600m. when runner up to All American in another Group One, the VRC Emirates Stakes. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 Off the scene for some months, So You Think returned in the spring of 2010 to win a second Cox Plate, the Yalumba Stakes, Underwood Stakes, L.K.S. MacKinnon Stakes and Memsie Stakes before a gallant third behind Americain in the Melbourne Cup. After five Group One victories in Australia, So You Think took his talent to Europe adding another three (Eclipse Stakes, Irish Champion Stakes, Tattersalls Gold Cup) to his tally plus some other fine performances against world class opposition. Triassic, the dam of So You Think, is by Nijinsky’s son Tights (USA) and was herself a more than handy performer in New Zealand where she won the Waikato Sir Tristram Fillies Classic (Gr. 2) and the Soliloquy Stakes at Ellerslie. 19 New Sires 2012 New Sires 2012 Uncle Mo (USA) Bay horse – foaled 2008 Standing at Coolmore Australia, Jerrys Plains – FEE (inc. gst) $24,200 Siberian Express In Excess Kantado Indian Charlie Leo Castelli Soviet Sojourn Political Parfait Kris S Arch Aurora Playa Maya Dixieland Band Dixie Slippers Cyane’s Slippers Unbeaten champion two-year-old colt in the USA in 2010, Uncle Mo is a valuable and interesting addition to the powerful stallion roster at Coolmore, representing a new outcross for many mares. His final start of his juvenile season then came in the Grade One Breeders’ Cup Juvenile (1700m) which he won by 4.25 lengths against a hot field. Uncle Mo, who earned more than $U.S.1.6 million, will be the first son of recently deceased leading U.S. sire Indian Charlie (Caro/Grey Sovereign-line) to come to Australia. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 While he failed to win in six starts at three years, Zoffany more than confirmed his class with three seconds in feature events, notably the St. James’s Palace Stakes (1600m) at Royal Ascot where he took ground off the great Frankel in the closing stages and in the Prix Jean Prat, another 1600m Group One at Chantilly in which he was beaten by only a head. Tyranny, the winning dam of Zoffany, is a half-sister to U.S. stakeswinner Spotlight out of Dust Dancer, winner of the Group Three Prix de la Nonette while Zoffany’s third dam Galaxie Dust is a daughter of the influential Blushing Groom. 21 Preparing stallions for the stud season With popular sires having books of 100 plus mares to serve each season, they need to be mentally and physically fit and ready to start covering on September 1. Caroline Searcy, TBNSW Committee member and popular TVN presenter, spoke with three of our leading studmasters,Vinery’s Peter Orton, Sam Fairgray of Arrowfield and Mick Malone of Kitchwin Hills, to learn how they approach stallion preparations leading up to the season. Tell me the process involved in getting a stallion ready for the breeding season. Do you let them go a bit in the off season, or does that involve too much work to get them fit again? PETER ORTON: Preparing a stallion for the breeding season is not unlike taking a speller from the paddock and putting it into work. It is good to see them let down and get the hot feed out of their system, then the process of getting them up to peak condition and performance is similar in both circumstances. The work load on our stallions is quite significant and we want them to work effectively and to remain in good body condition throughout the season. Therefore, the feed program does change for that specific purpose; not any specialised ‘super fertility feeds’ or the like, just the balance of diet to build the individual up where necessary. SAM FAIRGRAY: Yes, they have the energy taken out of their diet in the off season. As we build toward September and their exercise increases so do their feed levels. MICK MALONE: Like all horses in “work”, their diet is tailored to the amount of work they are doing. During the off season, they are fed less protein, again tailored to the individual. In the lead up, protein levels are increased. Do they get more paddock time through the winter or do you stick to a routine year round with them? PETER ORTON: In winter we try to get them out on a full time basis so they are relaxed, have plenty to graze on and get as much exercise as they need to keep them happy and settled. SAM FAIRGRAY: Our stallions stay out as much as possible, even at night time we leave them out. They only come into the boxes in hot weather or if it is very rough weather. 22 Successful sire Dane Shadow who stands at Kitchwin Hills. Do some stallions require different handling in the off season, or do they all cope with the same patterns as other stallions on the farm? PETER ORTON: We do like to have the stallions in the same routine. However every stallion is very different and we need to make adjustments and exceptions. For example the gross stallion, we may need to find a smaller, lighter paddock or limit the time he is out grazing; or the stallion that has feet issues and has problems when the ground is hard, etc SAM FAIRGRAY: Yes, each stallion is treated as an individual all year round. They are given the best care and attention. MICK MALONE: Duporth enjoys life whatever, he’s very relaxed and enjoys everything about his life, especially food and girls (in that order). Dane Shadow is a completely different kettle of fish – he’s quirky and more solitary by nature and we have to cater for what suits him at all times – during the off season he responds particularly well to having his own time and less fuss. How do you build up their fitness before a busy season? PETER ORTON: We start exercising our stallions six (6) to eight (8) weeks prior to the breeding season which is done by hand walking. Taking them for long walks around the farm is good for their overall disposition to get out and about with a clear head. The other way we exercise them is on our horse-walker which is a more accurate conditioning process. The best approach of all is a bit of both. SAM FAIRGRAY: We build up their fitness levels leading up to the breeding season by walking and trotting them on the horse walker. During the breeding season it depends on how busy the stallion is in the breeding barn as to how much work we give him. MICK MALONE: From early June (sometimes earlier if parades are scheduled) for their own fitness we alter their feed and exercise routine by introducing hand walking around the farm past the mares (exercises both body and mind), lunge sessions, time in the sand roll and in Duporth’s case, work under the saddle. Is there much preparatory vet work done pre season to check fertility levels etc? PETER ORTON: We do like to have the stallions cover test mares before the start of the season. At that time we do take dismount samples for sample quality and mobility of the sperm. We don’t investigate from a fertility perspective any deeper than that unless there is call for it. Also at this time we take a number of swabs to ensure the horse is clean and clear to go. SAM FAIRGRAY: No. MICK MALONE: Routine counts and swabs only. What’s the process with a first season stallion. At what stage will you start test breeding, and what does that entail? PETER ORTON: The first season stallion is a delicate process and many stallions can be mismanaged at this time, which can sometimes take them some time to get over. Understanding the mental process the young stallion will be going through, firstly being allowed to do what he has been told not to do for some time is the first hurdle. Secondly, he must learn the routine with control and discipline. A young stallion rushing and roaring into a covering barn can result in himself being kicked, the mare being hurt or your handlers being put in danger; all leading to the worst result and limiting the chances of the mares conceiving. SAM FAIRGRAY: Starting a new stallion off in the breeding barn is a very important step in his future. Patience and time is taken to allow him to build confidence and get his technique right. Some take longer than others but once they get the idea there is no turning back! MICK MALONE: Approximately 10 days prior to the season’s start a test mare is introduced once a day, every day. Too much too early can make them too keen for their own good. Do you breed thoroughbred foals from the test breeding before the season proper, for instance with an older mare, or is that usually done with a Clydesdale or non Thoroughbred mare? PETER ORTON: We usually use a non thoroughbred mare and in the case of a first season stallion carefully choose the most suitable temperament and size. SAM FAIRGRAY: We have Clydesdale mares that we breed to the thoroughbred stallions and we also use them to teach a new stallion how to serve with them. MICK MALONE: Kitchwin uses non thoroughbred mares. NSW BREEDERS’ UPDATE AUTUMN 2012 Top international sire Red Ransom -- his death was a blow for everyone at Vinery. Is there a difference in handling European/ USA stallions in the off season, who may not have shuttled for the northern hemisphere season, or do they just get treated the same as the horses who always winter here? All we need to do is slow their workloads down and wait for them to come back, which for most stallions will only be a few days, for others that may not have fully adapted it may take a couple a weeks. PETER ORTON: They get treated exactly the same, dealing with their individual needs as they present. Over the years I have observed that the northern hemisphere stallions certainly physically thrive in our environment, which makes our task easy. SAM FAIRGRAY: No, they are in good condition when they arrive. You just need to keep them happy and most settle in very quickly. SAM FAIRGRAY: Generally you treat them the same. They can tend to put weight on very quickly though so that has to be monitored. What goes into the preparation for a northern hemisphere shuttle horse, who may be coming off a busy season? They obviously arrive close to the start of the season, but do they need some time to acclimatise and get in the swing of things? PETER ORTON: We certainly expect the stallions to be in good condition and somewhat rested before getting on a plane. They do need a few days to get over the trip and then they should be ready to get straight to work. It is later in the season where we need to be careful and watch their work loads. Just like our racehorses heading to the northern hemisphere to race, most trainers like them to arrive fit to race and only enough time for them to fully get over the trip. It is two to three months after they have changed hemispheres that they start to have acclimatisation issues. For the shuttle stallion, towards the end of October and early November their coat roughens as if developing a winter coat and their libido drops off slightly. Are there any things you’d like to add about stallion preparation for the new season? PETER ORTON: Working with stallions is certainly a complex job and we need to have the best of people handling them. Stallions in general have unique personalities that need to be approached accordingly. In some cases bad handling can lead to behavioral problems such as the savage stallion, a timid stallion or a generally unhealthy stallion. Most stallions are worth many millions of dollars so we require a high level of management to appreciate the responsibility of caring for such an investment. For all of the above reasons stallions are one of the most interesting and satisfying areas to work with on the breeding farm. They are at the forefront of your business and to a degree we rise and fall on their success. Just as important the stallions become so much a part of the fabric of the farm on so many personal levels. When Red Ransom died here at Vinery, he received accolades from all over the world for his feats as a stallion, but his passing also personally affected my staff here and the many more past employees. MICK MALONE: Only that stallions are individuals and we treat them as such. 23 Don’t underMINE us!
