Of all the fortified towns in the Netherlands, Grave is one of the towns
that was besieged most often. Battles were regularly fought for possession of
this town due to its strategic position on the border of Brabant and Gelre
(Gelderland). Grave began as a small settlement but began to grow when

Ages, several sieges took place as part of the struggle between the duchies
of Brabant and Gelre, including sieges in 1285, 1385, 1386 and 1388. Grave
belonged to Gelre between 1400 and 1549, during which time the old castle
was extended and improved. DukeArnoud of Gelre played an important role
for Grave, and the last Duke of Gelre, Karel van Egmond, was born in Grave.
