Bigger and Better !!!!! This year we definitely are that. The festival promotes the natural beauty of Chautauqua County with blues or vice versa? This year we are a two day event and we still have FREE camping, FREE parking and you can BRING YOUR OWN COOLERS. The festival starts Saturday May 29th at 7 o'clock with the all NEW Acoustic Blues in the Barn featuring 2003 Grammy nominee Alvin Youngblood Hart. This show is at The Three Barns a mile west of Sedan, very very cool. Then Sunday May 30th at our original site (a mile north of Sedan) we have Blues by the Creek beginning at 2 o'clock featuring Tab Benoit and Sean Costello. Both days are JUST $20, under 12 $10 and under 5 free. Also remember our headliners play early for those traveling (see schedule). We have one day passes for Saturday only at the gate for $10. A small town located in the beautiful Chautauqua Hills has had so much happen in recent years. First was the reclaiming of land that was a dump in downtown Sedan, now a park called the Hollow, it has truely become a paradise. An old one room school house sits on the park property and there are school photos going back almost a 100 years. The downtown businesses have undergone a major transformation and more is being done. The largest building in town, the Bradford Hotel is being completely rennovated. Things to see in downtown Sedan, just around the corner from the Hollow is the Emmett Kelley Museum. The name a tribute to the world famous clown that was born in Sedan, the museum holds many great exhibits. For more great Kansas history, The Chautauqua County Geneological Society is having an open house at 'The Birdhouse' May 29th. There are many great shops, (see sponsor sheet!) antiques and even an Art Gallery. For the kids, the newest attraction is the 'Sugar Mining Company' a fun place to tour with animated miners. Around Sedan we have the most scenic drives in the state, beautiful falls at the Red Buffalo Ranch even at our venue for the saturday show is a beautiful site. For maps with tours marked, please visit that old school house in the Hollow, the office of the Sedan Area Chamber of Commerce or for any questions call them at 620 725 4033. This is the most affordable and enjoyable festival you'll ever see and we are a non-profit so thank those sponsors. Chautauqua Hills Festivals puts this event on with the goal of improving the life for everyone in one of Kansas' poorest but without a doubt it's most beautiful county. The festival is stratigically located just an hour and a half from both Tulsa and Wichita and could not be done without the blues societies of those fine cities. Thank you Wichita Blues Society and The Blues Society of Tulsa, which are both non-profit promoters of blues. There will be a non-profit vendor serving Red Beans & Rice both Saturday night and all day Sunday. As with us, all these non-profits are run totally by volunteers and need your support. ANY questions or comments call us at 620 725 3834 or visit www.cqbluesfest.com. For more information call the Sedan Area Chamber of Commerce 620-725-4033 Sean Costello was born in 1979 in Philadelphia and moved with his family to Atlanta at age 9, about the same time he began playing the guitar. Early on he could duplicate the rock sounds of Led Zeppelin and Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray Vaughan was a definite influence as well. But when he picked up a Howlin’ Wolf record at a local bargain bin, it changed his life. “I was about 12 then, and it was the hippest thing I’d ever heard,” he says. “His guitar player, Hubert Sumlin, was a revelation.” he says. Soon after he developed a friendship with Atlanta blues man Felix Reyes, who allowed the young prodigy to sit in regularly throughout Atlanta with his popular act, Felix And The Cats. At 14, Sean won the 1994 Blues Talent Contest sponsored by the Memphis Beale Street Blues Society, and he later competed in the International Blues Competition, an event which also featured another notable contestant, Susan Tedeschi. The two would soon join forces on a series of national tours with Sean as the lead guitar. Their partnership would culminate with Sean providing the sizzling fretwork on Tedeschi’s best selling “Just Won’t Burn.” His stint with Tedeschi along with a steady series of professional gigs and recording dates beginning at age 14, gave Sean the experience and confidence to leave Tedeschi to front his own band. It wasn’t long before he was on the road with his own band, and along the way sitting in with the likes of Cotton, B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Pinetop Perkins, and Bo Diddley. In 1996 he recorded his first album, Call the Cops for Blue Sun Records. Critical reaction was strong. Real Blues magazine called it “an explosive debut,” and England’s Blues and Rhythm said it was “some of the finest, purest blues guitar anywhere.” In 1997, Tedeschi and Sean met up again at the Springing The Blues Festival in Jacksonville and began gigging together out of Boston, then Atlanta. As the success of her Tone Cool album and touring schedule grew, Sean’s prowess garnered impressive notices across the country. Sean returned to Atlanta in late 1998 and assembled the band’s current lineup of Melvin Zachary on bass, drummer Terence Pranther, Paul Linden on harp and piano and keyboardist Matt Wauchope. The band was soon in the studio to record Cuttin’ In. As Sean puts it, “We really wanted to come up with something new within a rootsoriented setting, and I’m real pleased with the way it turned out. The band loves reworking the great New Orleans and Chicago stuff.” The result was a breakthrough album on which prompted Blues Access to wonder “If he’s this good now, what can he achieve with a few more years on those vocal chords?” and garnered a W.C. Handy Award nomination for “Best New Artist D e b u t .” 2001 saw the band tearing up the festival circuit with jaw dropping shows and back in the studio to record Moanin’ For Molasses If Cuttin’ In was the breakthrough then Molasses served notice that Sean is the real deal. Not content to rely on the “formula” and produce another CD of Chicago and New Orleans covers he’s expanding his sound to include hard soul with an absolutely amazing cover of James Brown’s “I Want You So Bad,” a hard driving rendition of Johnny Taylor’s “You Can’t Win With a Losing Hand” and a nice batch of originals. On this CD Costello’s guitar isn’t about flash, it has a refined, clean sound reminiscent of the masters, vintage Buddy Guy included, the result is nothing short of brilliant. If you have a chance to see Sean Costello live jump on it, drag all your friends to the show...they’ll thank you later! In meantime check out his CDs and discover what can happen when a young guitar god rejects the flash and opts instead for passion, understanding and respect for the music. We’re sure you’ll agree the blues has bright future with Sean Costello at the helm. Take 3 talented guys who musically are always on the same page, add the simplicity of a trio and you get Hatchet Jack. Vocally John Wood (drums & vocals) and Paul Murphy (guitar & vocals) are a powerhouse, belting out blues that Stevie, Albert and Freddie would all approve of. You will almost always find John and Charley Taylor (bass) in the pocket, laying down the foundation for some pretty hot fret work by Paul. Paul’s influences, from The Beatles to Hendrix mixed with over 25 years of experience, have earned him almost legend status among the locals in S.E. Kansas. Introducing Patti Martin, a voice often compared to none other than Etta James and Susan Tedeschi. Patti has been a mainstay in the Tulsa music scene since she was first introduced to Tulsa legends such as Gus Hardin, Wanda Watson and Polly Ess. You can’t help but stop and listen when she sings.. from the smoothness in John Prine's "Angel from Montgomery" to the unleashed energy in Susan Tedeschi's "Mama he treats your Daughter mean", to the soulfulness in Etta James’s “Damn Your Eyes”. Its obvious her heart and soul are channeled through hervoice when she sings. As fate would have it Patti met the guys, jammed a little and an all blues project was created known as... ALMOST FAMOUS.. Made From Scratch is a 4 piece rockin’ blues band based in Wichita, KS. They play and exciting mix of Blues, Rock, Swing, Jazz...well let’s just say they play American Music. With the talents of Steve Jordan on lead vocals and harmonica, Ken Kretzschmar on lead guitar, Willi Sebastian on that always spinning upright bass, and Mike Hinecker pounding the skins, Made From Scratch keeps your fingers snappin’ and your toes tappin’. MFS was formed in early 1986 as a two piece county blues act. After growing to five members, they played Wichita and the surrounding area for almost ten years. In the mid 90s MFS broke up to pursue different projects. (Sticky Reeds, Gravy From the Hip, Mistaken Identity, Strange, The Buddy Holley Show, Swing Daddies, to name a few). MFS was re-united at the 2002 CQ Bluesfest. "It felt just like old times, We had so much fun we decided we better keep Made From Scratch alive!" Made From Scratch has a great chemistry that comes from playing together for over a decade. These boys really know how to throw it down. It’s hard to keep Steve from off the top of your table when he’s playing a killer harp solo and you better watch out when Willi straps on the upright bass for a stroll around the room. With over one hundred songs in their repertoire Made From Scratch is capable of providing hours of entertainment. Winner of the 2004 Ozarks Blues Society best band contest this will be releasing a new CD anytime now. Their debut CD was featured on KMOD's "Smokehouse Blues" with Rockin' John Henry (Tulsa), has received acclaim from Chef Eddy’s Blues Revue (Ft. Smith) and Paul Rowlett's Blues Revue on KRSC (Tulsa), and has been well received throughout the Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas live music communities. A blues/soul/rock band formed in Tulsa, Oklahoma, they entice audiences with a wide variety of blues-based music, styles ranging from "Vintage Jump" to "Memphis Soul" to various funk and R & B styles -- with some flat-out Rock for good measure. Collectively, the group is versatile and capable of many different styles. Their material dates from the 1940s to the present, featuring songs from artists such as BB King, Freddie King, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Etta James, Bonnie Raitt and Stevie Ray Vaughan, to name a few. They also feature original music. But the real draw of this band is that it is a coming-together of five incredible talents. No member is lacking in musical skill, all are notable in their own rights, and together – nothing less than a very impressive show. Definitely not your average The Cosmic American Love Child Of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray!!! Known as a “musician’s musician”, his praises have been sung by everyone from Ben Harper to Brit guitar gods Eric Clapton & Mick Taylor. Since his 1996 debut recording, the all acoustic BIG MAMA’S DOOR, Alvin Youngblood Hart has carried his musical message the world over. A devout follower of the “no barriers” approach laid by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and the late great Doug Sahm, Alvin continues to defy the so- called purists. After receiving the 1997 W.C Handy Award for Best New Artist, as well as 2 Living Blues Awards, Hart’s 1998 release ,TERRITORY, a rousing tribute to all forms of American music, received the Downbeat Magazine Critics Poll Award for Best Blues Album (and it wasn’t even a Blues album). In the summer of ’99 Hart teamed up with producer Jim Dickinson to begin recording START WITH THE SOUL. This record would be hailed as a new breed Southern Rock classic & Alvin’s return to the “sacred garage” where many a guitar player’s life began. ”SOUL”, Alvin’s best selling record to date, was chosen in the New York Times top 10 releases of 2000 as well as the BBC’s Blues record of the year. He also shared Living Blues Magazine’s best guitarist honors with fellow road dog Big Jack Johnson in 2001. Hart continues to tour the globe as a solo artist and with his eclectic electric band FUN FACTS: A true “blues traveler” , Alvin grew up moving all over the United States. as he puts it ,”3 high schools in 3 time zones” .This was surely a contributing factor to his wide musical tastes. Hart has taken the stage at some of the world’s great venues. He’s appeared at London’s Royal Albert Hall. In the Summer of 2000 he wowed ‘em at the Hollywood Bowl closing his set with a sizzling duet with Bonnie Raitt. Alvin is a veteran of the US Coast Guard. He spent 3 fi years as a grunt seaman on a buoy boat on the Lower Mississippi River and 3 fi years as an electronics technician at a radio transmitter station on the west coast. He now puts his military training to use fixing guitar amps in his wife’s Memphis guitar repair shop. Many of the amps he uses on stage were once patients. When not on the road Alvin spends much of his time in the Central Mississippi hill country where he enjoys, horseback riding, hunting ,fishing and hanging out with his extended family. SATURDAY MAY 29TH 7PM ALL NEW FOR 2004. Another night of blues inspired by a venue? The Acoustic Blues night featuring 2003 Grammy nominee for Best Acoustic Blues CD, Alvin Youngblood Hart is being held at a completely rennovated 1911 barn and it really will be something special. Joining Alvin on stage will be Beau Brumley and Lemuel Shepard. Beau Brumley's playing career began with rock & roll in Little Rock, Arkansas. He had a successful career in rock with tours throughout the midwest and appearances with some real legends. His blues career began in the early eighties, in 1984 he joined the Gary 'BB' Coleman Blues Band. Beau then formed a band under his name and again had alot of success, he formed other bands all successful but he is best known in the Tulsa area for 'Crosstown Traffic'. The Beau Brumley Band is back and is releasing a CD soon. Beau a well traveled and experienced musician says "I just love playing" and he will be closing the show. The opener for the acoustic blues night is Lemuel Shepard, a blues historian and someone who gives his time freely. He plays Blues In The Schools programs across the country and gives guitar lessons (you'll see a one of his former students on Sunday). He has been a featured artist by the Kansas Arts Commission and was chosen to represent Kansas in 1999 at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.. Lem is from the Pittsburg area and has performed all over the region and at the 2002 CQBF. To read more about or to contact Lem go to www.lemuelsheppard.com.
