“And Finally”
Clare and her Mum Karen at the presentation of her work.
This is the title of a booklet written by Claire Edwards who researched and wrote
the book as part of a skills for working futures programme, run by Cumbria Youth
Alliance. Claire also took a level 2 in ICT at the same time, supported by Lakes College.
The Skills for Working Futures is run by Cumbria Youth Alliance( CYA). It gives
local young people aged 16-25 real opportunities for self development, personal challenges and growth. It enables young people to take a lead role in an organisation of
their choice, Claire was based here at Shackles Off for 6 months. At the beginning
Claire had doubts whether she could produce such work, but the booklet is living
proof that it was possible, through Claire's hard work and the support of partner
organisations CYA and Lakes College, especially Mrs Maureen Hogg.
On 8th May we had a small gathering where we formally presented Claire with her
Booklet. Members of Claire's family and friends as well as a representative from
CYA were there to celebrate with Claire her achievement.
The Booklet itself is the events of June 2nd 2010 seen through the eyes of a teenager.
It is very well written and researched,we are all very proud of Claire, and have seen
her „grow‟ throughout the months she completed the programme.

Together We Can Week
14th-19th March 2011
„Together We Can…‟ is a project involving many organisations that provide services in the
community: This includes Cumbria County Council, Copeland Borough Council, Seascale
Parish Council, Cumbria Constabulary, Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, and community
and voluntary organisations. They have all come together to try to make a visible difference in Seascale.
During the week there were various workshops and activities organised for all sections of
the community young and old. Young people from Shackles Off took part in various
events including the archery, beach clean and Youth Forum. The Youth Forum in particular was a great success and this will now be a regular event under the heading Mid
Copeland Youth Forum. The biggest issue that the young people wanted to discuss was
transport.

Shackles Off Wedding Party!
On 29th April Prince William and Kate Middleton were
married. The young people decided they wanted to celebrate the day too. We started with Bacon buttys cooked
by Mandy and Adam while we watched the events unfold.
We then celebrated with pink cupcakes made by Syl! A
good time was had by all.
V-Involve
Some of our young people have taken
part in the V-Involve scheme where
they gain credits for hours of volunteering .
V-Involve is a national volunteering
scheme which recognises the efforts of
young people in their communities by
registering and acknowledging the
hours and tasks they undertake.
Mathew has successfully completed his
V-50 and V-100 certificate. This means
Mathew has completed 100 hours of
volunteering with us.
WELL DONE Mathew!!
John Muir
Award
Bri Edwards took part in a residential
training course in April at Keswick
with the John Muir Trust. This will
enable Bri to set up John Muir award
activities within Shackles Off. Some of
the Young people here are already
keen to get started!
The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild
places. It encourages awareness and
responsibility for the natural environment, in a spirit of fun, adventure and
exploration.
Sad News
It is with great sadness that we
report the death of 4 people
involved with Shackles Off.
Mrs Muriel Dorwood passed
away in March. She was our
oldest supporter and enjoyed
very much the company of the
young people in Shackles Off
and they in turn were very
gentle and respectful off her. She will be greatly
missed by all of us.
Bethany Durose aged 17 died tragically in April.
Beth was one of our talented young people and will be
greatly missed by all her family and friends
Guy and Elaine Harrison both died earlier this
year. Elaine was one of our management committee
members and supporter since the beginning of the
project. They will be greatly missed.
Spring Cleaning!
Our thoughts go to their family and friends.

Sundays—X-treme
We are taking 20 young people and
volunteers to a Christian Festival
called Soul Survivor in July.
The event takes place on the Staffordshire showground and we will be
camping for 5 days. This will be an
opportunity to experience God with
many other young Christians from different parts of the country.

On Sunday March 6th Richard Teal (Chairman of the District) came to
Seascale Methodist Church. A group from X-treme who meet at Shackles
Off every Sunday were invited to the Church for lunch afterwards. The
young people enjoyed chatting with Richard and the Lunch was wonderful!
A big thank you to the ladies of the church who worked hard to prepare
and bring our lunch.

NITE WATCH UPDATE
Nite Watch is coming
soon!! Full details in
next newsletter
Pray for “Nite-Watch” that we will secure the resources and funding
we need to establish this new venture
Pray for guidance for the future as we move forward with new initiatives
to help our young people.
Pray for our community, as June 2nd will mark the first anniversary of
the shootings.
Pray that at all times we will love and care for each other and always go
the „extra mile‟ with all we come in contact with
And Finally:
As always, we give our thanks to both the individuals in our community, and
the organisations who provide us with the funds we need to keep doing what
we do. We also give thanks to our wonderful team of volunteers, without
whom we would be unable to deal with the numbers of young people currently
attending sessions.
