TITAN TRIBUNE – February 13, 2013 Page 1 of 3 TEA AREA SCHOOL DISTRICT TITAN TRIBUNE WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 13, 2013 TEA AREA SCHOOL, POB 488, TEA, SD 57064 – 605-498-2700 VOLUME 4 ISSUE 5 From the Superintendent’s Desk By Mrs. Lowery, Superintendent What is the Common Core? What do teachers do on professional development days? The education world is full of acronyms and new initiatives. The common core standards (CC) and the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC) are two of the biggest initiatives currently in education. The common core is a set of standards which outlines the content in each grade level and/or course. The state of South Dakota has had its own set of standards, South Dakota State Content Standards. The Council of Chief State School Officials studied the difference in standards across states and recognized the need for a common set standards due in part to our transient society. Dr. Schopp, South Dakota’s Secretary of Education, is our representative in CCSSO. Forty-five states have adopted the common core standards in English/Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. Common science standards are coming as well. The Next Generation Science Standards are in their final draft stages and available for public comment. Content standards are critical to education as they are what your child is expected to learn. The content standards essentially outline the material/concepts for each grade level or class. The common core shifts where some concepts are learned and mastered. Teachers have studied gap maps and cross walk documents to help with this transition. The mastery of these standards is measured throughout the year as we track student progress. The high-stakes test measuring student achievement is being developed by the Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium (SBAC). The SBAC assessment is replacing the Dakota Step Test which currently measure’s student achievement on the South Dakota Content Standards. The Dakota Step test will be used this year (April 2013) and next year (April 2014); thus, we are transitioning to the common core and being tested on the state standards. As a note, the 2014 Dakota Step test will be administered online and not available via paper-and-pencil. The Smarter Balance assessment will begin in the 2014-2015 school year. It will be an online assessment. The structure of the test will be much different from traditional multiple choice/standards-based assessments. I would invite you to look at sample problems on SBAC’s website. The past year two year’s professional development has been devoted to the common core. Teachers have been introduced to the common core, learned to “unpack” or “disaggregate” standards, worked in teams to learn the verbiage of the eight standards of mathematical practice and literacy strands, worked on their curriculum maps which include identification of gaps/shifts in curriculum, and began studying the conceptual shifts of the common core. Martin Luther King day brought five districts to our in-service on shifting to the common core. We hosted McCook Central, Montrose, Canistota, Emery/Ethan, and a few teachers from West Central and Gayville-Vollin. The focus was not only on content, but the importance of getting our kids to think. We were challenged with the task to teach how to: determine, analyze, compare and contrast. We were provided with applicable tools to use in our classroom the next day. Teachers are collaborating, learning, and growing together as they work to continually raise the bar and meet the new standards and assessment expectations together. If you are interested, here is a list of links which will provide you with more information about the common core and Smarter Balance: - Common Core Standards - Tea Area In-service Documents - Next Generation Science Standards - Parent Teacher Organization – Common Core - South Dakota Department of Education Explanation - Smarter Balance Assessment Consortium - K-6 Checklist of standards – I can statements If you have questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher, principal, or me.
