Geographically, Malaysia is as diverse as its culture. Malaysia is divided into
13 states and 3 federal territories, separated by the South China Sea with 11
states and 2 federal territories (Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya) in Peninsular
Malaysia, and two states and 1 federal territory (Labuan) in East Malaysia.
The capital city is Kuala Lumpur and the administrative centre remains in
Putrajaya. Malaysia now records an estimated total population of 30 million
comprising multi-racial and multi-cultural citizens.
Islam is the official religion of the country, but freedom of worship is
enshrined in Federal Constitution. Other religions, which are widely practised
include Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and many more. The monetary unit
of the country is Ringgit Malaysia and is written as RM or MYR.
Malaysia follows the bicameral legislative system, adopting a democratic
parliamentary. The head of the country is the King or the Yang Di-Pertuan
Agong, a position which is changed every five years among the Malay
Sultanates. The head of government is the Prime Minister.
Malaysia’s key attractions lie in its extreme contrasts. Towering skyscrapers
look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and five-star hotels sit several
metres away from ancient reefs. Cool hideaways are found in the highlands
that roll down to warm, sandy beaches and rich, humid mangroves. The
country experiences tropical weather year-round. The temperature ranges
from 210C to 320C. Annual rainfall varies from 2,000 mm to 2,500 mm.
