2011 Annual Report Draft v2 - Handi
Empowering Individuals - Transforming Lives Annual Report 2010-2011 Letters from our Leadership Dear Friends of Handi-Crafters, Dear Families, Colleagues and Supporters, It has been an honor to serve as President the past four years, especially this last year as we celebrated Handi-Crafters’ 50th Anniversary. On January 1, 2012, Don Sheldon takes over this role. He has been a member of the Handi-Crafters board of directors for three years. Don brings extensive business management experience which will benefit John with son Todd Handi-Crafters and he will provide excellent leadership as we move forward. From our humble beginnings in a church fifty years ago, Handi-Crafters has grown into a campus. We now have two beautiful modern facilities serving over 400 people. From a single job rolling newspapers for furniture stuffing, we can now boast about being a player in the supply-chain Amy (R) with Tina for the Verizon FiOS product, as well as working with several national and international companies. From our original focus serving the developmentally disabled, we have expanded to include numerous populations with barriers to employment. From an agency with a single program, we now offer multiple services to the community, from supported employment to independent living. It has been a pleasure to work with Amy Rice, HandiCrafters’ Executive Director, the staff and board members associated with Handi-Crafters, and especially our clients, those individuals who benefit from the services we provide. There is nothing more rewarding than the smiles you see when walking through the workshops, the handshakes and hugs, and the friends they have made. Believe it or not, we have a few people in our Older Adult Daily Living Center who have received services at Handi-Crafters for nearly fifty years. I can’t imagine what their lives would have been like without Handi-Crafters. For my son Todd, and hundreds of others, Handi-Crafters provides his life with purpose, friends and the opportunity to learn new skills. Handi-Crafters is blessed with faithful donors who believe in the importance of the services we provide. In these challenging times we realize that government funding is not unlimited. The support of foundation, corporate and individual donors ensure that Handi-Crafters will continue to have the resources to make a positive difference in the lives of individuals who need that extra support to succeed. We are also blessed with a dedicated staff, board and volunteers who are truly committed to improving the lives of those we serve. In 2011 the Board of Directors and Managers of HandiCrafters completed a three year strategic plan. The plan calls for Handi-Crafters to identify opportunities to improve and expand the services we provide our clients. We also will develop ways to learn from other service providers and look for opportunities to share ideas and collaborate which can improve the lives of all individuals with disabilities. In closing, I’d like to thank everyone for the opportunity to serve as President the last four years, for your advice and, most importantly, for your past and future support for the individuals we serve. May Handi-Crafters’ next fifty years be as successful as the past fifty have been. Sincerely yours, We accomplished a great deal in our first fifty years and yet, service demand only continues to increase and the needs of those we serve continue to evolve. We have already outgrown our present program space. We are squeezing out every last square inch of office space for our staff. Even our, now only five year old, retirement center is starting to feel a bit tight. We may soon face the unhappy situation of turning people away, a possibility we are not ready to accept. Currently we are looking at very tentative plans to expand. But what will that look like? What will Handi-Crafters’ role be in the next fifty years? During this economic collapse Handi-Crafters has been fortunate to remain strong. We have grown our servicebased partnerships with community organizations and with incorporating Residential Living Options into our service continuum the opportunity for collaboration and consolidation has become increasingly clear. There are a number of services we would like to make easily accessible to the people we serve. The plans for the future we are working on would create more opportunity for program development and collaboration. We would design flexible space to allow for a fluid community of service providers to work together. Imagine being able to access essential services at work! We will focus on expanding our collaborative efforts to create an integrated service experience and learning culture in order to achieve collective impact and meaningful change. The capabilities and potential of those we work with never ceases to amaze us. Their success stories demonstrate the human potential that we have yet to fully tap. Sincerely, John Gillespie Past President Board of Directors 2 Amy Rice Executive Director 2010-2011 News & Notes New Website Launched Handi-Crafters unveiled its new website, making information on opportunities at Handi-Crafters more accessible to community members and connecting them with the services they need. The site also allows businesses to easily access and evaluate our diverse capabilities to solve their business needs. Video Wins Gold Telly Award Handi-Crafters’ video "Meaningful Work" won a Gold Telly Award. The Telly Awards honor the very best local, regional, and cable television commercials, programs, video and film productions, and work created for the Web. See the video at handicrafters.org/about-us/ 50th Anniversary Gala In April, Handi-Crafters held its 50th Anniversary gala event at Longwood Gardens. 200 business, government and philanthropic leaders gathered in support of Handi-Crafters. The event netted a record $130,000 - creating more opportunities for individuals in need in our community. Creating Meaningful Opportunities for Older Adults with Disabilities L to R: Retirees perform movement and dance therapy; Patty gets some exercise on the treadmill. Our fastest growing program, the Older Adult Daily Living Center has seen participation grow 80% since opening in 2007. The innovative retirement center offers unique opportunities for older adults with disabilities to experience the rewards of a lifetime of work. Participants access stimulating, therapeutic and fun activities that help promote their overall health and wellbeing. 3 3 Handi-Crafters Adds Independent Living Solutions to our Service Continuum Handi-Crafters took an exciting strategic step this year to enhance our mission of empowering people with disabilities to live independent, productive and fulfilling lives. Residential Living Options (RLO), a non-profit providing independent housing counseling, education and advocacy for people with disabilities merged into Handi-Crafters, becoming the Independent Living Solutions program. There is a great deal of interdependence between employment, housing and other basic needs that cannot be overstated. By consolidating supportive services for people with disabilities under one roof we are creating greater Housing Counselor, Nova Adams, works with Patricia to navigate The Benefits Bank, an innovative web-based portal, that cuts through the complexity of the benefits system connecting individuals to benefits they need. Through this collective service continuum individuals with disabilities and their families are accessing a diverse set of resources and services that will help guide and support them throughout the course of their lives. efficiencies and opportunities to enhance the lives of those in need in our community. Crafters is the only organization in Chester County offering this service directly to people with disabilities. “We saw this as a chance to provide more services to those we work with, as well as an opportunity to reach out to more individuals in need,” states HandiCrafters’ Executive Director, Amy Rice. “Plus streamlining services such as housing and employment just makes a lot of sense, especially in this day and age.” This means when an individual comes to HandiCrafters they are accessing a comprehensive assessment process that evaluates their diverse needs, their ability to live independently and their employment potential. We then work with each individual to help them accomplish their goals and realize that potential. ILS brings its expertise in counseling and advocacy, home modifications, roommate support and service coordination guiding hundreds of individuals and their families towards a more stable, safe and independent life. Independent Living Solutions Services & Supports “This has been a great opportunity to grow our program to meet the needs we see out there for our service, remarks Catherine Friedman, Director of ILS. • Housing Action Plans (HAP) • Home Modification • Regional Housing Coordination Through this collective service continuum individuals with disabilities and their families are accessing a diverse set of resources and services that will help guide and support them throughout the course of their lives. Employees produce over 3,600 tubes a day which are then sold on QVC. This past year Handi-Crafters began partnering with On Air Direct to package products sold on QVC. The Test Tube product series is a collection of some of the most in-demand beauty products on the market. Handi-Crafters has packaged four different Test Tube lines featuring 8-10 beauty products in each tube. We have produced over 220,000 tubes meeting On Air Direct’s volume requirement of over 3,600 Test Tubes per day. “Doing business “We have built a relationship based upon communication, trust, and customer service. Handi-Crafters’ participation in the Test Tube project has been invaluable.” with Handi-Crafters is a terrific experience” says Vince Guldin, Operations and Warehousing Manager for On Air Direct. “We have built a relationship based upon communication, trust, and customer service. Their participation in the Test Tube project has been invaluable. The quarterly Test Tube sales have exceeded expectations and the kits sell out with regularity. I look forward to incorporating Handi-Crafters in other projects in the future.” This past fiscal year Handi-Crafters has worked with 51 customers to help get products to market. In addition to major contracts with such distinguished companies as Summit Container, SC Johnson and CTDI, we’ve continued to expand our partnerships and take on new opportunities. This includes work with Echo Data, a Coatesville-based fulfillment center, to package products that Echo Data delivers to customers, such as packaging 14 different products for Quirky, an innovative product development company and repackaging homemade soda making products for Sodastream. We have partnered with jewelry artisans like Lenora Dame and Maximal Art to assemble and package jewelry sold in Anthropologie stores and high-end boutique shops. We have collaborated with non-profits and local governments such as Operation Warm, packaging nearly 40,000 coats for children in need, assembling Caln Township’s quarterly newsletter and packaging educational tote bags for Health Partners who supplied the bags to children in the Philadelphia school district. Unemployed and collecting Social Security Insurance (SSI) as a result of his disability, David had no desire to work. That’s when David came to Handi-Crafters at the encouragement of his outside case manager. David started out two days a week as he slowly transitioned back into a work mentality and routine. David has come a long way in his recovery process since that time. Today he works five days a week. This past winter he was promoted to a position on our warehouse team with added responsibilities and expectations. David is thriving. He was recently certified to use the Fork Lift and he is proactively preparing himself to transition back into competitive employment. “Handi-Crafters has helped me feel more confident and better about myself. I’ve come a long way!” “My goal is to work for a living,” David explains. “I want to get off social security.” David is working with Frankie Maxwell, one of our competitive employment specialists, to accomplish this goal. David’s experience working in the warehouse has encouraged him to pursue similar positions at area businesses. One company he’d like to work for requires its employees to have a high school diploma. So David, rather than being deterred, started preparing for his GED. As part of this effort Frankie connected David with a tutor that he met with regularly to help him prepare for his test. “Handi-Crafters has helped me feel more confident and better about myself,” David reflects. “I’ve come a long way!” This journey of David’s now includes his GED certificate which he achieved recently. The next stop is competitive employment, which given David’s motivation, is bound to happen. This past year David Scott was promoted to a position in the warehouse where he was trained to operate the forklift. You don’t have to be wealthy to change the world. Your planned gift to Handi-Crafters will leave your legacy and transform lives!
