wonderful Norway
The “Norway Cruise Manual” gives a survey of Norwegian harbours
providing excellent services to the cruise market. This presentation is
edited in a geographical sequence: It starts in the North - and finishes
in the South.
The presentation of each port gives concise information about the most
important attractions, “day” and “halfday” excursions, and useful, practical
information about harbour conditions. The amount of information is limited
due to space. On request, more detailed information may be obtained from
Cruise Norway or from the individual ports.
The “Norway Cruise Manual” is the only comprehensive overview of
Norwegian harbours and the cooperating companies that have the
international cruise market as their field of activity. The individual port
authorities / companies are responsible for the information which
appears in this presentation.
An Early Warning System (EWS) for Norwegian ports was introduced in 2004

4. Attractive none nature based attractions
Beside the genuine nature based attractions,
Norway has many attractions to show visitors,
especially in the field of famous composers,
painters, polar expeditions as well as traditional
art. New and modern attractions are being developed and new niche products are developed to
meet the needs of younger cruise passengers.
2. The unique variety of itineraries
Along the 1.300 nautical miles coastline the possibility to create interesting itineraries is immense.
As per today cruise ships call on more than 30 different Norwegian ports annually. The most popular areas are the Fjords, North Cape, Spitsbergen,
coastal cruises including the Lofoten Isles and
all the way south to Oslo. Together with the other
Scandinavian capitals Oslo is often included in
the Baltic Cruise Itineraries.

1. Cruising Norwegian water and fjords
The Norwegian coastline includes more than
67.000 islands enabling cruise ships to sail in
sheltered waters. The longest fjord reaches 200
kilometers inland with smaller inlets, as in other
fjords, providing breathtaking scenic views including remote farms and villages that are still populated. Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord were in
2006 rated as the best cared for Unesco World
Heritage Site.
3. Attractive nature based attractions
Cruising is probably the best way to see Norway.
In the many ports along the coastline it is possible to arrange a great variety of shore excursions.
The percentage of cruise passengers participating
on shore excursions in Norway is very high compared to other destinations. The overland tours
secures the passengers the ultimate experience of sailing combined with excursion by
rail, bus and boat - experiencing the dramatic
changes in the scenery.
North Cape
5. Norway - a safe destination
Norway is - at least until today - situated in a calm
corner of the world. Many tourists look upon
Norway as a safe tourist destination.
The Norwegian system of pilot service and
the national Coast Guard is internationally
recognized. The public health care is well organised. The implementation of the ISPS security
code has been successful.
6. The cultural heritage
The Vikings are well known, and Norway has a long
history. The oldest towns have a history stretching
back more than 1000 years. Norway has a lot to
offer in terms of cultural heritage like the famous
Stave Churches, many museums, well preserved
wooden buildings and the many picturesque villages by the fjords and in the mountains.
7. The cruise history
The first commercial cruise to Norway took
place in 1882 as P&O`s “St. Sunniva” visited
the Norwegian fjords and North-Cape and since
then Norway has been a popular destination for
all the major cruise lines.
8. Norway and the Norwegians
Norway is a modern Western European democratic
country with a long history. The Norwegians are
friendly and well educated and most Norwegians
speak foreign languages. The 4,7 mill. Norwegians
are proud of their country, their history and like to
show the tourists the magnificent nature and the
Norwegian lifestyle. Norway is 323 758 square
kilometres and in average each square kilometre
has 14 inhabitants.
Additionally many National Parks have been
established since the early sixties.
9. Mild climate due to the Gulf Stream
The Gulf Stream warms the Norwegian coast and
ensures a mild climate even this far north, and
the Midnight Sun can be experienced north of the
Artic Circle. Even south of the Artic Circle the passengers can enjoy the magnificent and genuine
nature in daylight - 20 hours per day.
10. Shopping - well organised VAT refund
Norway might have an image of being an expensive country, but the well organised tax-free shopping for tourists keeps the prices down. VAT
refund is offered at most Norwegian ports. Typical
Norwegian items like knitwear, fur products and
local craftworks are popular to bring home. All
kind of international well known trade marks are
sold in Norway as well, and you might do a bargain buying high profiled items.

The location of Drammen is remarkable, located at the innermost end of Drammen Fjord. Drammen is one of the larger
cities in Norway. The City of Drammen has long traditions as a meeting place and commercial centre for a very rich and
important region of Norway. The city grew up on the trade of timber and wood products, as well as shipment of silver
from the rich silver mines at Kongsberg, the neighbouring city inland. Drammen’s wide range of attractions appeals
to both domestic and foreign visitors and it is also a perfect gateway to the many attractions of eastern Norway, the
cultural and economic centre of gravity of Norway.

The Kristiansand Cannon Museum (The Vara

The Vara Battery played an important part in
the artillery installations constructed by the
Germans after their occupation of Norway in the
spring of 1940. Similar installations were built
in Hanstholm, Denmark. Armaments in both
countries included four 38 cm guns. Together
these guns covered most of the distance across
the Skagerrak, and thus efficiently kept allied
ships out of danish and norwegian waters.

By establishing the cruise organization Small City Cruises, our goal is to attract parts of the ever expanding cruise traffic
frequenting Norwegian waters. The ports includied in this new marketing concept are the cities of Mandal - Farsund and
Flekkefjord. Common for all are the natural geographical positions close to or along the shipping routes, geographical
distances to the next major destination along the coast and an abundance of new, exiting and authentic experiences for
expectant passengers. And last, but not least – the desire of the local population to act as hosts to our guests
Our target group is defined towards cruise ships sized up to approximately 1500 pax. Larger ships will be possible,
depending on port of call. By the following suggestions we will bring you into a new - partly undiscovered - and safe

The Lysefjord and The Pulpit Rock
The region has long claimed to be the cradle of the Vikings and it is also here that the great Norwegian
fjords begin. In the east, the landscape varies between fjords and steep mountains, like the Lysefjord

the south is Jaeren, a flat open landscape with long white sandy beaches. Cruise ships dock in the middle
of the oldest part of the town at Gamle Stavanger, just a ten-minute walk away from the town’s lovely
market place and the charming city centre with its pedestrianised cobbled streets.

Hopperstad Stave Church was built around 1130.
The church has been altered and extended over
the years, but the original building is still more
or less intact. When the new church in Vik was
built in 1875 it was decided that the old church
at Hopperstad, which was at that time in very
poor condition, should be torn down. However,
thanks to the effort of the architect Peter Blix,
it was saved. He was also responsible for its
later restoration to its former glory. With a
firm hand on the tiller, he decided that all the
extensions and changes would be removed
so the Hopperstad Stave Church could be
seen as it was in the Middle Ages.

- The ultimate
cruise destination
Flåm Cruise Port is one of four harbours who welcome ships to Aurland Harbour Authority. Flåm with its 400 inhabitants
is nestling securely in the innermost part of the famous Sognefjord, and with its good communications you can reach Flåm
by car, train, boat or by bus. Large cruiseships squeezing through narrow fjord arms surrounded by snow-capped peaks and
waterfalls cascading down the mountainside are a beautiful but usual sight. The Sognefjord with its many fjord arms has
been a highlight and main attraction for cruise tourists along the Norwegian coast for many decades. The Næryfjord is the
most spectacular fjord arm of the Sognefjord and is listed on UNESCOs World Heritage List.

Gateway to the glaciers
Peaceful Olden lies at the end of the southernmost of the three short branches at the inner end of the Nordfjord. From
there the lovely valley, Oldedalen, strikes due south for some 20 kilometres between slopes rising sharply to more
than 1700 m. to the edge of the Jostedal Glacier. Olden is the key to a journey up to the frozen cascade of the million
years old Briksdal Glacier, which is the best-known of the Jostedal Glacier's many icy arms. The turbulent river, which
feeds the beautiful Olden Lake, forms magnificent falls that you can see on your ride up to the stunning glacier. Cruise
Destination Olden - Nordfjord is a part of Port of Nordfjord which also consists of Måløy, Selje, Nordfjordeid and

Geirangerfjord – rated as the best cared for Unesco World Heritage Site by National Geographic Traveler november
2006. Quote: "To float into the Geirangerfjord is an astonishingly complete natural experience—steep, lush and rocky
canyon walls, endless waterfalls, a snow-capped backdrop and inconceivably deep, emerald green water. There are a
wealth of farms, now largely abandoned (Skagefla, Knivsfla and Blomberg) along Geirangerfjord’s banks, one of which is
only accessed by climbing a flimsy rope ladder which spans hundreds of meters from the water, along the cliff face, to
the farm plateau." The scenery is the main attraction of the area, and can best be seen on an excursion:

Ålesund –
the Art Nouveau town by the sea
34
Ålesund has a beautiful setting across several islands stretching out into the sea, and is situated at the very
entrance of the UNESCO world heritage site, the Geirangerfjord. Above all Ålesund is internationally renowned for
its unique architecture in the Art Nouveau style. The town was devastated by fire a winter’s night in 1904, laying 850
houses in ashes and leaving 10.000 people homeless. The new Ålesund ”rose from the ashes” in the continental turn-ofthe-century style with a myriad of turrets, spires and medieval ornaments. The town mountain Aksla offers breathtaking
views of the town, islands and fjords and the town has a unique appeal to travellers and tourists, providing a wide range
of sights and activities. The cruise terminal is located in the very centre of the town where cruise passengers can explore
and experience the enchanting atmosphere of the Art Nouveau town.

Narvik lies on a headland between two fjords, the Beisfjord and Rombaksfjord, at the foot of Fagernesfjellet, which
is over 1200 meter high. Narvik was originally called Victoriahavn and much of Narviks history is owed to the large
iron –ore mines at Kiruna in Swedish Lappland. The need for access to an ice-free harbour to export the ore led to the
construction of the Ofoten Railway and so to the development of the modern town of Narvik.
Fargernesfjellet - a mountain with a famous

hugs the steep rock face, and it is incredible to
think that it was even possible to build a railway
here, let alone practically by hand.

Eight Wonder of the World”, the Ofoten Railway
has latitude of 68˚N. When it was built at the
turn of the century, it was the northernmost,
coldest and harshest railway construction project the world had ever seen. Metre by metre, the
line of route was carved out of the hillsides.

and the fight for the iron ore ended with the
city being razed to the ground and with 5 years
of German occupation. Through exhibitions
of pictures and equipment from World War II,
the museum focuses on these fateful years for
Narvik and the Ofoten region.
Narvik Cruise Port
Traditionally, the people of Ofoten made a living
from a combination of fishing and agriculture.
A new era arrived with the construction of the
Ofotenbanen Railway towards the end of the
19th century. In order to mine iron ore in the
Kiruna area, a railway was needed to carry the
ore to an ice-free port for shipment to Europe
and other parts of the world. In 1902 the railway
was finally completed together with the new city
of Narvik.

From Svolvær
Lofoten is an Arctic island archipelago, and has been a cruise ship destination since 1984. The last 4 years have seen an average of 70 cruise calls each year. There are three cruise ports: Leknes, Svolvær and Stamsund, Thanks to the influence of the
Gulf Stream, the climate is remarkably mild for its Arctic setting. This also gives the landscape its striking variety: wildly beautiful places of marsh and rock, green fields and still lakes, dramatic mountains, and white sandy beaches by turquoise seas. The
human influence is seen in the picturesque villages and the fish-drying racks that surround them, as dried cod, or stockfish, is
still the main export. Five of the islands are connected by the main road, and you can cross all five and return in a day with ease.
Alternatively, passengers can disembark at one port and rejoin the ship at another. Various national and international publications
have named different places in Lofoten “the most beautiful beach in Norway”, “the most picturesque village in Norway”, and
“the most beautiful view in the world”.

Attractions/excursions
From Leknes
Duration: 6.5 - 8 hours
Full-day tour to Å. Heading southwest, you take
the undersea tunnel to the island of Flakstad.
Following the outer coast, you pass the
charming 18th century Flakstad Church, and
the curving white sand beach of Ramberg.
The mountains become more dramatic the
further south you go, until you reach the jagged
black granite of Moskenes Island. At Reine is the
spectacular fjord view, voted by Time magazine
the most beautiful view in the world. In Å you find
the Fishing Village Museum and the Stockfish
Museum. The return journey offers a striking new
vista with each curve of the road.
Flakstad, Nusfjord, and Sund
Duration: 3,5 hours
The tunnel under the Nappstraum takes you to
Flakstad Island. The little red-painted Flakstad
Church of 1780 is the second oldest in Lofoten, and
the artwork inside is even older. At the Fisheries
Museum in Sund you can see the blacksmith
creating his well-known cormorants, using techniques from the beginning of the 20th century. You
will also find boats, engines and other artefacts
from Lofoten’s fishing history. On the return journey, experience the picturesque village of Nusfjord,
one of three places selected for the European
Architectural Heritage Year in 1975. This idyllic setting
is your last stop before returning to your ship.
Duration: 7 hours
Full-day tour. Towering above Svolvær is The
Goat, a 569 metre (1864 feet) high “horned”
column of rock jutting from the mountainside.
The tour passes the Vågan Church, the largest
wooden church north of Trondheim. Crossing
three islands of ever-changing but always beautiful scenery, the first stop is the Lofotr Viking
Museum. Surrounded by farmland, this living
museum is contained within a reconstruction
of the biggest Viking longhouse found anywhere
in Scandinavia. The return journey stops at the
village of Henningsvær, where a converted fish
landing stage houses Galleri Lofotens Hus. Here
you can see not only works by North Norwegian
artists past and present, but also “Magic Island
Kingdom”. This multi-media presentation shows
Lofoten and its people through the seasons in a
moving marriage of image and sound. Svolvær
harbour is now only 25 minutes away.
Half Day Tour
Ballstad, Buksnes Church, and Borg
Duration: 3 hours
The fishing village of Ballstad is spread along
both sides of the harbour. There are many traditional fishermen’s cottages standing on stilts
at the water’s edge, as well as the largest mural
in Northern Europe across three walls of the
shipyard. The 1905 church of Buksnes is in the
so-called “dragon style”. Its interior is filled with
light, and decorated with motifs from Norway’s
Viking past. Passing the municipal centre of
Leknes, you head through fields and farmlands
nestled at the feet of mountains to the Lofotr
Viking Museum at Borg. This hilltop site is a living museum contained within a reconstruction

Duration: 4 hours
Beginning practically at the foot of The Svolvær
Goat, a 569 metre (1864 feet) high “horned” column of stone jutting from the mountainside, the
tour passes the Vågan Church, the largest wooden
church north of Trondheim. Nyvågar is home to
the Lofot Aquarium, a fascinating display of Arctic
marine life. If it’s mealtime, you can see the otters

Stamsund is a typical fishing village, but also

- Culture, history and
coastal adventures
Harstad is the culture capital of north Norway. With its population of 23,000, it is situated on the largest island in
Norway, Hinnøya, in one of the most beautiful coastal areas with skerries and islands. Commercial and shipping industries are economically important, and the borough is also a base for the oil industry of the north. Harstad is a communication centre in a densely populated region with Lofoten to the west, Narvik to the east, Tromsø to the north and Bodø
to the south. Harstad never sleeps when lit up in the sunshine of midsummer nights. During summer, the town is teeming with people along the quayside. Around midsummer eve, with the Festival of Northern Norway, there is music in the
streets, in the square, in pubs, in the concert hall and churches. Leisure time activities are many and varied, and boating
is a favourite past time. The new marina can harbour 25-30 boats. Central to the harbour is also one of the country’s biggest and most modern concert halls, with up to 1000 seats.

Tromsø – The Gateway to the Arctic
Well above the Arctic circle, in the land of the Midnight Sun, midway between the Lofoten Islands and the North Cape,
a convenient sailing away from Spitsbergen and Murmansk, between islands, fjords and mountains, you find Tromsø
– The capital of the north.
48
Early visitors to Tromsø were surprised to find culture, language skills and the latest fashions in Tromsø, and dubbed
the city the Paris of the North. Arctic and Antarctic explorers started of from Tromsø, earning the city the nickname the
Gateway to the Arctic. Today, Tromsø is a university city with 64 000 inhabitants, a compact colourful city centre of
historic wooden houses, a blossoming cultural life, some very attractive sights and attractions, unique shopping possibilities, a
lively café scene and a half-mad nightlife. The wild mountains, the lush fjord shores and the weather-beaten islands are
within easy reach, at the city doorstep. The inhabitants are known for their high education, cultural interests, sense of
humour and loud, un-Scandinavian talkativeness. A tourist destination for more than 100 years and repeatedly a host for
important international congresses and events, Tromsø caters for visitors with ease, professionalism and a healthy dose
of common sense.

Honningsvåg Port is the gateway to the North Cape. It is the largest cruise port in Northern Norway with about 100
cruise calls during the summer season every year. The port can accommodate four cruise vessels at the same time,
close to the town centre. Honningsvåg boasts an extraordinary deep-water harbour where even the largest cruise vessels
such as the Splendour of the Seas and Rotterdam can tie up right next to the fishing harbour. Vessels can enter or leave
by day or night without difficulty. Due to its important location and good infrastructure, Honningsvåg is a major port in
northern Norway.

Attractions/excursions
There are plenty of sports and cultural events in
Longyearbyen. A sports hall with a swimming
pool is a popular focal point for many of the
sports activities. Lectures and talks on various
topics are regularly organised, often at the university. Many famous musicians and artists visit
Svalbard during the year and there are many
exhibitions, concerts and other special events,
particularly during the weekends.
Arctic Boat Trips
The archipelago, formed several million years
ago, has a unique environment with high, snowcovered mountains - 60% covered by glaciersspectacular rock formations and low growing
colourful flora.
There are great many different species of animal
life. Seals, walruss, polarbear and whales have
their habitat all along the coast.
Longyearbyen is the seat of local government and
Longyearbyen is the starting point for a number
of various boat trips. Day trips to the Russian
community Barentsburg are popular, or come
along on an evening excursion to Sassenfjorden,
past the mighty Tempel mountain where many
bird species live and thrive. These trips take
you to impressive glaciers, like the Tunabreen
glacier, with its enormous glacier front.

inhabitants has developed from being a typical
mining community into a community with a
number of businesses and industries and a wide
range of cultural activities and opportunities. In
general, the population of Longyearbyen is rather
young, with many small children.
Leisure and cultural activities abound. Since
there are no roads between the settlement
areas on Svalbard, snowmobiles and boats are
a common means of transportation. Locals are
very fond of outdoor activities, as well as taking
weekend trips to cabins and huts.

Svalbard Museum
The museum is located in the Gateway to
Svalbard (Svalbardporten). The exhibition presents fragments of Svalbard's 400 years history
and describes factors that help support life and
the activities taking place here, which together
reveal the close relationship between sea and
land, nature and culture history. At the museum,
you can get an insight into everything from
the discovery of Svalbard, 17th century whaling
history, expeditions, winter trapping techniques,
flora, fauna, and geology and mining history.
In connection with the relocation, many objects
are transported back to Svalbard to be included
in the museum expositions.
There are several activities available for visiters
to Svalbard all year round, but many activities
are only available during certain seasons. In
Longyearbyen you will find activites like: Arctic
Sea Rafting, barbecue, boat trips, fossil hunting,
glacier crossing, hikes, mining tours, rubber boat
tours, sightseeing, horse-back riding trips, kayaking, dog-team sled trips, snowmobile trips etc.
Accommodation and meals
There is a wide range of accommodation alternatives available in Longyearbyen, everything
from small, cosy guesthouses to full-service,
high quality hotels. During certain periods there
is a great demand for accommodation, so we
recommend that you make reservations well
in advance of your trip. Cafes, pubs and excellent restaurants offer everything from simple
and inexpensive to the most exquisite menus,
including many Arctic specialities.
