Depending on your age, there would be a range of answers from a fireman, an astronaut, a teacher, to president. As we grew older, we considered our dreams from a different point of reference. In order to reach those dreams we had to work hard and dare to dream. But for many in our community, the act of dreaming is simply not a possibility. For far too many people, the act of survival is the biggest dream of all. Having the opportunity to dream is essential. A dream lets you imagine what could be possible. A dream also gives you a sense of hope. At the Action Center, our mission is to provide an immediate response to basic human needs and promote pathways to self sufficiency. Each day, we put our best foot forward to meet that first half so that many can find their way toward the second half of the mission statement. In so doing, we work to make dreams happen. In the past year, the Action Center, itself, has dared to dream as well. We have boldly set out to expand our physical plant so that we can provide the best service possible for the thousands in our county who reach out to us for assistance every year. We are moving in this direction in recognition of the sluggish recovery from great recession of 2008. Some five years later, many neighbors continue to struggle to regain a solid foothold towards self sufficiency. The fact-of-the-matter is, the tremendous number of clients coming for assistance simply overwhelmed our existing facilities. This trend required us to re-think the most effective ways to provide service; thus, our dream of expansion. We needed to create a means to serve the long-term goals while still providing a solid response to the basic needs. Once this project is completed, we will be more effective at meeting both ends of our mission statement. That The fact-of-the-matter is, the tremendous number of clients coming for assistance simply overwhelmed our existing facilities. This trend required us to re-think the most effective ways to provide service; thus, our dream of expansion. is because we will have the needed space to offer the best case management care for individuals and families seeking a hand–up to emerge from trying circumstances. We will continue our efforts through the next fiscal year to raise the funds needed to execute our dream so that our neighbors will have the opportunity to experience theirs. Our efforts, combined with that from clients will lead to amazing outcomes. Let’s all dare to dream together! Mag Strittmatter Executive Director Roger Mattson Board President Program Areas Wherever clients are on the continuum of need, whether they have experienced a temporary setback or have never been able to “make it” on their own, the Action Center can help. A dedicated staff and volunteer program services team offers clients a hand up by meeting, not only, their immediate needs like food, shelter and clothing but also by connecting clients to the resources and tools that will help them find their pathway to self-sufficiency. Through Intervention, Prevention and Connection services, the Action Center gives help, provides hope and builds dignity while breaking the cycle of poverty. Intervention A household in crisis requires the most basic of needs to be met first, before planning for a sustainable future. Each day, an average of 160 households access the food pantry and clothing bank, along with other services like bus passes, personal care items and the 22-bed homeless shelter. Intervention services stabilize families and individuals while they work with case managers to create a longer-term self-sufficiency plan. Prevention Other client households can ward off a crisis before it begins, or re-gain stability with short-term or seasonal help from prevention services. For some, short-term assistance might be a five-day supply of food, help to pay a rent or utility bill, household items or even tenant/landlord counseling. Many times, prevention means covering extra costs that are incurred at specific times of the year. The Action Center’s seasonal programs like School Supply Distribution, Thanksgiving Food Distribution and Santa Shop all help to reduce the strain on fragile finances. Connection After immediate needs are met, the Action Center promotes pathways to self-sufficiency most effectively by connecting clients to resources and other programs in the community that offer the tools to break the cycle of poverty. Connections and referrals help clients improve their education, health care opportunities, housing and employability. Key Community Partners: •Estes Street Community Clinic •Red Rocks Community College •Jefferson County Human Services •Metro Community Provider Network •Exempla Lutheran Medical Center •Volunteers of America. 6,839 Thanksgiving meals 5,955 nights of shelter 5,077 bags of school supplies 28,000 people served 4,068 kids received toys $412,973 in utility assistance 177,435 articles of clothing 53,490 five-day supplies of food 833,660 total meals from all food distribution Client Services Beyond basic human needs, lies the journey toward self-sufficient living. Fiscal year 2013 was a year of program planning and development to better support our clients in their pathway to self-sufficiency. Best practices learned from intensive case management in the shelter program formed the building blocks of a plan for a system-wide Self Sufficiency Pathways Program. The first step in the formalization of this program was the implementation of the Shelter Aftercare Program - an opportunity for shelter clients to participate in further case management after exiting the shelter. Special classes and educational workshops provide financial education and computer skill-building to assist clients in getting their lives back on track. The staff realized that success in one program area could benefit the Age entire service platform, and as a result, a twoOn average, tiered case-management model was developed the Action Center 51-99 to complement existing walk-in services. As fiscal served 147 households year 2014 began, so did the pilot version of the every day. Age Pathways Program. Efficiency and effectiveness Age 18 & Under are keys to measuring this agency’s success. Children 31-50 Dreaming big is also part of the equation. Our under the age of 18 mission is to “provide an immediate response to is the largest population basic human needs and promote pathways to served at the Action Center. Age self-sufficiency.” To dream big, we have to really look at how we are providing service to both ends 19-30 of the mission statement. In doing so, we will better serve so many of our neighbors in this county. More to come! 13% 42% 26% 19% The Action Center offers the single-most comprehensive range of services to struggling residents of Jefferson County and the homeless. We meet the immediate needs for our clients, treating them with respect and dignity. Then we provide clients with the resources needed to develop pathways to self-sufficiency, breaking the cycle of poverty. Dare to Dream Executive Director, Mag Strittmatter reflects on dreaming big...”If there is something that can be said about the Action Center over the years, it’s the willingness to dream big. That is exactly what the Action Center has done since 1968. When a need was identified, there was no hesitation in tackling the issue. After all, what began as an organization of volunteers bound by a mission to meet basic needs would not be denied; regardless of how daunting the challenge may have seemed. With this kind of tradition juxtaposed to today’s needs of the community, the services of the Action Center have never been more in demand. Once again, the call to dream big continues.” Food Rescue One of the Action Center’s biggest accomplishments last year was the formalization of the Food Rescue Co-Op. This includes retail food stores, manufacturers, distributors, storage warehouses, and trucking companies. We have established valuable alliances and partnerships with community partners like Whole Foods Markets and King Soopers to name a few. In particular, Whole Foods Market provided more than $100,000 worth of food to the Action Center in 2011. The Action Center continues to forge relationships with existing and new food distributors. The USDA estimates that supermarkets toss out $15 billion worth of unsold fruits and vegetables every year. The Food Rescue initiative provides the highest quality food to individuals in need. This compliments our use of the USDA “Choose My Plate” food distribution format which includes fruits, grains, vegetables, protein and dairy items. Fresh fruits, vegetables and other perishable items provide vital nutrients deemed necessary for optimal health. Where Action Matters Breakfast The 10th annual Where Action Matters Breakfast was held on May 8, 2013. With 400 people in attendance, the event raised $375,000 to fund the Action Center’s programs. Special thanks to our dynamic client speakers, Jackie Carson Garcia and Angelina Archuleta for sharing their stories of how the Action Center supported their families in their time of need. Thank you to sponsors including: FirstBank, Ortho Colorado Hospital, LifeSource Health Partners and Thrivent Financial. School Supply Distribution The Action Center kicked off its season of prevention programs with the School Supply Distribution on August 6th 2012. Volunteers worked tirelessly for nearly two months, ensuring that all of the bags would be packed and ready for clients. Supplies were dropped off every day on the dock and donors contributed to an online drive that was a partnership with the Foundation for Excellence in Learning and Education. The online donation drive matched dollar for dollar and raised more than $12,000! In 2011, there was a 33 percent increase in clients at the School Supply Distribution. That number held strong in 2012. By the week’s end, more than 5,100 children received muchneeded school supplies. Donors and volunteers made it possible for the Action Center to continuously rise to the occasion and serve the ever growing need in the community. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the School Supply Distribution. Your dedication allowed low-income children to begin the school year with the tools for success in learning! “We would not have been able to serve families in need with school supplies and Thanksgiving food without the support from Jeffco Public Schools, a generous donor community, amazing volunteers and dedicated staff.” - Barbara Penning, Director of Volunteer Programs and In-Kind Donations Thanksgiving Food Distribution The Thanksgiving Food program eases the strain on fragile finances and prevents families from falling further into a crisis. In 2012, more than 2,100 households were served. In total, 6,800 individuals were able to enjoy a holiday meal! Extraordinary efforts were made by volunteers and staff to pre-pack the food boxes. More than 300 volunteers distributed on November 18, 2012. Special thanks to Ameristar Casino for sponsoring Thanksgiving Distribution with a $10,000 donation. Client Story Santa Shop Santa Shop brought holiday joy to more than 4,083 children in 2012. The holiday season can really put pressure on family budgets, especially when it comes to providing a special experience for children. When a parent is having a hard time putting food on the table or keeping the lights on, providing toys can seem impossible. This seasonal prevention program helped struggling parents to bridge the financial gap at this time of year when many could not provide for the increased expenditure of the holidays without putting their housing and stability in jeopardy. “I have a little girl and my husband is out of state working. We don’t have much, so I greatly appreciate your help in providing her with a gift. Bless you all for your compassion, patience and generosity.“ At this time next year, the Action Center will not only have fed, clothed and sheltered another 28,000 individuals with walk-in services. This time next year, thanks to our new Pathways Program, families who were homeless will be self-sufficient. Neighbors who thought their situation was hopeless will be back on their feet again. Kendra is a client whose life has changed, and will continue to change, thanks to the Action Center. Kendra’s case manager Diane remembers the first day she came for help: “Kendra first came to the Action Center after she escaped a violent relationship. She’s a high-school drop out, but she’s always worked hard and provided for her two-year-old daughter. I could see she was smart, but I could also sense that white-knuckle strength of complete desperation. She was desperate to put food on the table, desperate to provide for her daughter and desperate to just feel safe again. “I remember her saying, ‘I just want someone to hear me and not judge me.’” Diane heard Kendra. She met her immediate needs for food, clothing and personal care items. But Diane didn’t stop there. Through a new appointment-based program we call the Self-Sufficiency Pathways Program, Kendra has begun meeting regularly with Diane instead of just dropping in when she’s desperate. Through the structure of her Pathways meetings, Kendra can access the tools to move beyond the basics. With Diane’s support she has stabilized her housing and childcare and she is getting help to deal with the emotional trauma of the violence she suffered. What Kendra is most excited about in her future is the possibility of going back to school to finally earn a degree and provide a more stable future for “her little angel”. With the help of our liaison at Red Rocks Community College, she hopes to pass her GED in December and enroll in college classes in January! Today, Diane says still sees great strength in Kendra, “but now it is based on her accomplishments, not on necessity, not on fear.” 2012 Annual Meeting Highlights Community Partner of the Year - Elephant Talk Elephant Talk founders Randy Harris and Sandy Sommers spent more than two decades analyzing industry process and supply chains. But seeing the growing issues of hunger in our community they decided to apply their professional knowledge to a new venture – and Elephant Talk was born. They began to coordinate and deliver hundreds of tons of food each month. The food came from grocers, restaurants, farms and ranches and was delivered to food pantries like the Action Center several times a week. Because of their vision and effectiveness, Elephant Talk delivered fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy in addition to other staples, making the five-day supply of food we provide our neighbors even more plentiful and nutritious. Foundation of the Year - Domanica Foundation Created in 1994, the Domanica Family Foundation is a private family foundation mostly serving New Mexico, but for the past several years the trustees have expanded their geographic area to invest more in Denver agencies like the Action Center. Taking a personal approach, Domanica trustees visited the Action Center in person and decided to double their giving after experiencing the compassion of our mission and the efficiency with which it is delivered. Domanica is committed to supporting direct social services targeting hunger, homelessness and healthcare for the under-insured or uninsured. The Business of the Year - Whole Foods Market (Belmar and West Colfax) In 2012, The Belmar and West Colfax Whole Foods Markets continued to go above and beyond in support of our neighbors in need, abiding by their company core value of “Caring For Communities.” Whether through “Grab and Give” promotions, 5% days, or the mountain of food they donated to the food pantry each and every week, both of these generous teams became enthusiastic ambassadors for the Action Center and our mission. In the spirit of partnership, “It’s a given that each store donates food to area food banks and shelters,” says Whole Foods. Volunteers of the Year Mike Allen, Linda Behrens, Kathy Doyle, Glenda Emrie, Chris and Fred Essig, Marcia Hughes and James Terrell, Linda Kaiser, Steve Longsdorf, Lisa Markley, Mike Lupomech and Tom Watkins. Congratulations and thank you to these outstanding volunteers for their dedication to the Action Center! Employees of the Year Dan Marks and George Zimmerhackel Dan Marks, IT Manger has more than 20 years of experience in software support, diagnostics, maintenance and hardware integration. He works hard to keep the Action Center on the cutting edge of useful technology, so we can serve our clients better. George Zimmerhackel, In-Kind Donations Driver/ Dock Coordinator has diverse experience that allows him to relate compassionately to donors, vendors, volunteers and clients. He not only gets the job done every day, he sees past his tasks to connect with people, finding new and better ways for the Action Center to serve our most vulnerable neighbors. Online Giving Since its inception in 2010, Colorado Gives Day has offered donors an opportunity to easily make contributions that have an enormous impact throughout our state. This Community First Foundation initiative helps donors to maximize their holiday giving through an incentive fund from corporate partner, First Bank. On December 4, 2012, the Action Center received more than $165,000 in online donations through CO Gives Day. For a third year, New West Physicians led the way with a generous donation of $50,000 and the number of online donors continued to grow. Volunteer Programs This past year was another year of change and growth for our Volunteer Program. The food pantry was completely remodeled to mirror the USDA’s “My Plate,” which illustrates the five food groups that are the building blocks for a healthy diet using a familiar image. The My Plate system and new layout created a more efficient process for filling food orders, improved storage and consistent food rotation. Volunteers played an integral role in the design and flow. Many signed up to help with construction and reorganization of the space. Hundreds of new volunteers joined the Action Center last year through weekly, monthly and weekend shifts. Hundreds more volunteered for our five major events - School Supply and Thanksgiving Food Distributions, Santa Shop and the Spring and Fall Beautiful Junk Sales. Action Center volunteers reached an incredible milestone last year. More than 100,000 hours of time were donated from a corps of 5,700 volunteers! In the late 60’s there were only 93 volunteers and not a single paid staff person. Today, it’s just an average event day when more than 400 volunteers show up to hand out Thanksgiving Food! The origins of the Action Center lie whole-heartedly with volunteers who dared to dream. They dreamt that they could help all of their neighbors make ends meet. Their dreams were big enough to accomplish things like purchasing an old army barracks with Betty Crocker Coupons, cutting the building in half, and transporting it to Lakewood from Lowry Air Force Base. Today, volunteers continue to play a major part in making the Action Center’s dreams come true.
