2007 SEASON OUTLOOK
Patriots Look to avoid bullseye and return to Series
After earning NCAA Division II national tournament invitations three of the past four
seasons and making the program’s first
trip to the NCAA Division II College World
Series following a record-setting season
in 2006, the Francis Marion University
baseball team is looking to stay at the
level of regional contender and World Series partcipant.
This year’s Patriot squad is ranked 6th in
the preseason 2007 Collegiate Baseball
Magazine NCAA Division II Top 40 poll.
Dating back to the 2005 season, the Patriots have appeared in 34 consecutive national polls.
senior catcher Michael Ward (.296 average, 6 HRs, 41 RBIs), senior first
baseman Andy Howes (.250, 2 HRs, 23
RBIs), senior outfielders Nick Stewart
(.378, 6 HRs, 51 RBIs) and Derek
Kennamer (.327, 33-39 SBs), junior outfielder Justin Greene (.351, 7 3Bs, 28
RBIs), and sophomore third baseman
Taylor Norfleet (.322, 2 HRs, 53 RBIs),
who was named the Peach Belt Freshman of the Year. Sophomore designated
hitter Jared Barkdoll (.272, 1 HR, 30
RBIs), who spelled Ward behind the plate,
Despite last year’s season, for the second year in a row, Francis Marion was
tabbed to finish second in the battle for
the Peach Belt Conference 2007 baseball
title, according to the annual preseason
poll by the conference’s coaches. That
second-place selection equals 2006’s selection as the highest ever for the Patriots
since the PBC was formed.
Seventh-year FMU head coach Art
Inabinet welcomes back 18 of 26 lettermen
from last year’s 41-18 squad that finished
second during the Peach Belt Conference
regular season, and then went on the road
to win the South Atlantic Regional and
advance to the College World Series in
Montgomery, Ala. The Patriots ended the
2006 season ranked 6th nationally, while
setting a school record for wins. Ten of
the losses were to nationally ranked opponents, five of which were by one run.
Seven of 10 pitchers return from last year’s
staff that registered the nation’s seventhbest ERA (2.96), and the program’s lowest since 1979. Returnees include junior
right-hander Dylan Owen (12-3 record,
2.30 ERA), a first-team All-American in
2006; junior righty Dusty Floyd (6-0, 2.09);
junior lefty Brandon White (6-1, 3.72); and
junior lefty Michael Williams (1-5, 3 saves,
2.72). Owen and White form one of the
most formidable duos in Division II. Owen
ranked third in the country last year in total strikeouts with a school-record 126,
while White ranked 16th nationally in
strikeouts per nine innings (10.2). Floyd
owns a perfect 10-0 career mark in two
seasons.
on Feb. 3 with a home doubleheader
against Belmont Abbey College. FMU
was 23-7 at home last season and is 9321-1 in its last 115 home games. Inabinet
enters his seventh year at FMU and is
184-125-1 with the Patriots.
The 2007 PBC Baseball Tournament will
be played May 10-13 at Cleveland S.
Harley Park in Spartanburg. This year’s
PBC slate includes newcomer Georgia
Southwestern State University.

FMU BASEBALL HEAD COACH
HEAD COACH Art Inabinet
coach Gerald Griffin as the second head coach in
the program’s history.
In 2004, Inabinet guided the Patriots to a 29-17 record
and a fifth-place finish in the PBC. Francis Marion
won 10 of its final 11 contests and spent six weeks
in the Top 30 poll, including one week at No. 7. The
team’s ERA of 3.47 led the PBC and ranked 11th
nationally.
Art Inabinet, 41, is preparing for his seventh season as
head coach for the Francis
Marion University baseball
program and his ninth year
at the university. He owns a
184-125-1 coaching mark at
FMU, and a career coaching
record of 268-179-1 in nine
seasons as a head coach at the four-year collegiate level.
In 2003, he directed FMU to a 30-20 mark, a No. 18
national ranking, and a third-place finish at the NCAA’s
South Atlantic Regional. Picked to finish eighth in
the PBC preseason coaches’ poll, the Patriots placed
third with an 18-10 mark, only one-half game away
from winning the program’s first-ever conference title.
Last spring, Inabinet directed the Patriots to a programbest 41-18 record, a No. 6 national ranking, and the
program’s first-ever trip to the Division II College World
Series (the program’s fourth NCAA post-season invitation, and third in four years). FMU was ranked as high as
third in the Top 30 poll, and spent seven weeks in the Top
10. FMU’s team ERA of 2.96 was the lowest since 1979
and ranked seventh nationally. Following the season, he
was selected the ABCA/Diamond Sports Company
Coach of the Year for the NCAA Division II South Atlantic
Region, and was honored at the 2007 ABCA National Convention in Orlando, Fla.
In Inabinet’s previous two seasons at the helm of the
Patriots, FMU posted records of 24-27 in 2001 and
26-27 in 2002.
Prior to joining the FMU staff in 1999, he served as
head coach at North Greenville College for six seasons, recording a 155-122 mark (84-54 as a fouryear institution). He guided the Mounties program
from junior college status to a four-year program in
1996. After making that transition, North Greenville
was 14-21 in 1996, 34-17 in 1997, and 36-16 in 1998,
including a pair of second-place finishes in the MidSouth Conference his last two years. In 1995,
Inabinet was named the Louisville Slugger “Coach
of the Year” for the NJCAA Region X, as the Mounties
posted a 31-22 record and won the region title.
In 2005, he guided FMU to a 34-16-1 record, a No. 14
national ranking, and an NCAA bid. He captured his 200th
career win. FMU’s team ERA of 3.11 was the lowest for
a Patriot staff in 25 years and ranked eighth in NCAA II.
The squad placed third in the Peach Belt Conference,
equaling the program’s highest finish ever (until 2006).
Inabinet earned both the B.S. degree in history and
the M.A.T. degree in secondary education (social
sciences) from Winthrop University. As an undergraduate student, he was a four-year letterman on
the Eagle baseball team. Following his playing career, he served as a graduate assistant coach at
Winthrop from 1989 to 1991. He also
was the head baseball coach at The
Catawba School for one year (1992).
The St. Matthews, S.C., native served as a Patriot assistant for two seasons (1999-2000) - during which time
FMU was 37-48 - before succeeding long-time head

% Peach Belt Conference Tournament in Aiken, SC
& NCAA II College World Series in Montgomery, AL
FMU’S CLIFFORD S. CORMELL FIELD
Named in honor of Florence businessman Clifford S.
Cormell, Cormell Field was offically dedicated on March
5, 1974. Cormell was instrumental in helping establish
Francis Marion University, and early on he served as cochairman of the Patriots Brigade (now known as the
Swamp Fox Club). When opened, the field was one of
only a handful of collegiate facilities with an astroturf
infield. The astroturf was replaced by natual grass in the
1990’s. The dimensions of the field are 320 to right and left
fields, 365 to the power alleys, and 400 to center field.
Seating accomodates 400 spectators with standing room
for up to 1,000. FMU lost that first game in 1974, 5-3 to the
University of South Carolina before a standing room-only
crowd. Entering the 2007 campaign, Francis Marion was
93-21-1 in its last 115 home games.
PBC
Francis Marion University is a member of the 12-school NCAA Division II Peach Belt
Conference (formerly the Peach Belt Athletic Conference). Other PBC members include
Armstrong Atlantic State University (in Savannah, Ga.), Augusta State University (Augusta,
Ga.), Clayton State University (Morrow, Ga.), Columbus State University (Columbus, Ga.),

University (Dahlonega, Ga.), UNC Pembroke, USC Aiken, and USC Upstate (Spartanburg,
S.C.). Formed in December 1989 and headquartered in Augusta, Ga., the PBC conducts
championships in 12 sports, six for men and six for women. Of the 12 members, only Clayton
State does not sponsor baseball. The Peach Belt Conference post-season baseball
tournament will be held at Cleveland S. Harley Park in Spartanburg, S.C., May 10-13.
