And, the Wichita, Kansas native and his assistants have gone about assembling a squad that should make good on that promise. The 6-7 Carter contributed 8.1 points and 5.3 rebounds each outing last season, but must show a more aggressive presence on both offense and defense this year for the Bulldogs. A Charleston native, Carter is also capable of stepping out and knocking down the 12-15 foot jumper. The Bulldogs, who preseason prognosticators have picked to finish somewhere between seventh and ninth in the 11team Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, will be without their top two scorers from last season’s 13-17 team, however, a solid remaining nucleus will be bolstered by a talented group of newcomers, including three players who sat out the 2006-07 campaign. Baker, a 6-2 leaper and former walk-on, earned a scholarship this season. The Rowland, NC native has been one of the team’s top defenders during his career and is expected to continue that role this season, while providing more scoring punch from the perimeter. Overall, opponents should expect to face a Bulldog front court that will have a lot more depth and a backcourt that will have increased scoring punch. SC State returns three starters, led by senior point guard Derrick Davis. Other starters back are junior forward Julius Carter and guard Robert Baker, a senior. This trio is joined by four other letter winners to give the Bulldogs a solid core of returnees. They are swing player Jason Flagler, a sophomore, junior forward Chris Miller-Williams, sophomore guard Thomas Bookman, and center Dale Carn, a sophomore. Heading a talented group of newcomers are three players who sat out the 2007-08 campaign – junior guard-forward Everett Spencer, junior forward David Cobb, and junior point guard Jessie Burton. Also on this year’s roster will be guards Carrio Bennett and Westley Telfare, both true freshmen, and forward-center Jason Johnson, a junior college transfer. Davis, 6-0, was third on the team in scoring last season with 10.5 points per game and also the leader in assists with 3.2 per outing. The Washington, DC native has played at the point most of his career, but may be used at the shooting guard some this season. Most of all, the veteran guard will be looked to for leadership. 2007-2008 South Carolina University Men’s Basketball.....Page 6 Flagler, a 6-4 swing player, started 14 games last season. The Woodbridge VA native averaged 7.3 points and tied for the lead in South Carolina State University Men’s Basketball Bulldog Outlook - 2007-08: The Carter Era Begins rebounding with 5.6 per game on his way to earning a spot on the All-MEAC Rookie Team. He is an intense rebounder and, like Baker, should provide perimeter scoring for Carter’s team. Miller-Williams, a 6-6 Stone Mountain, GA native, may be the team’s best low block player. Possessing a wide body that is hard to get around, he demonstrated last year that he could score inside and also be a factor on the glass, putting up 5.0 points per game, while pulling down 3.1 rebounds in a reserve role. as well as t he team’ s overall speed and quickness. Scoring, especially on the perimeter, should be bolstered by Spencer, Burton and Bennett among the newcomers. Telfare could also provide a scoring boost, while both Johnson and Cobb are expected to be factors on the boards. The 6-6 Spencer, who transferred from Wright State, possesses a good, medium-range jumper and should be able to provide scoring from the wing as well as inside. The Columbus, OH native will also be looked to for leadership. Burton, 5-11 of Minneapolis, should battle for the starting duties at point guard. He has exhibited solid floor leadership and patience on offense. He can also score from the perimeter, underscoring Carter’s assessment that this team should shoot the ball well. Both guard Thomas Bookman and center Dale Carn will be asked to play more of a role for the Bulldogs last season. The 6-1 Bookman of Columbia, SC averaged just over ten minutes playing time in 24 contests last season, contributing 2.4 points per game. He is expected to help out at the point guard position. Meanwhile, Carn, 6-10, saw action in 16 games, averaging just over three minutes each outing. He will need to develop quickly to help out inside, especially on the board and as a shotblocker. The Bulldogs will also look to Bennett and Telfare, two true freshmen who are solid additions to the backcourt. Bennett, a late signee by SC State, was the Palmetto State’s 3-A Player of the Year as a senior when he averaged 28 points per game. An excellent onthe-ball defender, the 6-2 guard can also penetrate well, creating Carter, in assessing his team, said he expected the Bulldogs to be a good shooting team and also have a chance to be a solid rebounding squad, however, he expressed some concern about the latter, 2007-2008 South Carolina University Men’s Basketball.....Page 7 South Carolina State University Men’s Basketball Bulldog Outlook - 2007-08: The Carter Era Begins scoring opportunities inside for his teammates. A Piedmont, SC native, he has the potential for a bright future at SC State and in the MEAC. Telfare, of Lawrenceville, GA, stands 6-4 and gives the team a big guard who can provide scoring from the wing and rebounding from the backcourt. It’s hard for Carter to hide his excitement when he talks about 6-7 Bronx, NY native Jason Johnson, the prized junior college prospect Sullivan County Community College. And, Carter and his squad are faced with a very ambitious 2007-08 schedule, which includes stops at perennial ACC powers North Carolina and North Carolina State, South Carolina of the potent SEC among the non-conference opponents. The Bulldogs, who face an improving MEAC that has gotten better from top to bottom, will also take on Old Dominion and Jacksonville in non-conference games, and play in two major tournaments, one in Las Vegas where they open against Iona, and another in Charleston. The national JC Region XV Player of the Year, Johnson is expected to make an immediate impact inside for SC State with his rebounding and scoring. He averaged 21.7 points and led Division III in rebounds with 14.5 per game while leading his undefeated team to a national championship. “It’s obvious that we have our work cut out for us,” Carter said. “We have little margin for error, and that’s why it is so important that we get off to a good start and avoid injuries. “I’m excited about being here and about South Carolina State basketball. We came here to build a winning program and to make the university and its supporters happy. I want to build a program that will be in the NCAA tournament on a consistent basis.” He will get help, of course, from another New York native – 6-7 David Cobb of Brooklyn. Cobb has the ability to score around the basket, and is a solid rebounder and shotblocker. This talented inside duo will team with Miller-Williams and Carter to give the Bulldogs a strong rotation in the front court. So, all-and-all, the Bulldogs appear ready to improve on last year’s showing, however, the host of new faces will have to mesh with the holdovers quickly. 2007-2008 South Carolina University Men’s Basketball.....Page 8 South Carolina State University 2007-08 Men’s Basketball Numereial Roster No. 1 2 3 4 5 11 15 22 23 24 25 30 32 Name Jason Johnson Jessie Burton Derrick Davis Robert Baker Thomas Bookman David Cobb Jason Flagler Carrio Bennett Everett Spencer Westley Telfare Julius Carter Dale Carn Chris Miller-Williams POS F/C G G G G F G/F G G/F G F/C F/C C Ht. 6-7 5-11 6-0 6-2 6-0 6-7 6-4 6-1 6-6 6-4 6-8 6-10 6-6 Wt. 220 170 190 190 170 215 185 155 205 190 255 185 265 Cl. Carter comes to SC State after spending one season as an assistant coach at Florida State University. Carter, the alltime winningest head coach in University of TexasSan Antonio basketball, joined the Seminoles after winning 160 games and leading the Tim Carter Roadrunners into the Head Coach, First Season NCAA Tournament twice during his 11year tenure at UTSA. He is nationally recognized as an outstanding evaluator of talent and an outstanding bench coach who has coached in the Big Ten at Northwestern, the Big Eight at Oklahoma State and the Southwestern Conference at Houston. Carter, 51, was named the Southland Conference (SLC) Coach of the Year in 1999 when he led UTSA to an 18-11 record and to only the second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history. He led the Roadrunners to the NCAA Tournament in both 1999 and 2004 to mark two of the three postseason tournament appearances in school history. In those same years, Carter led UTSA to the Southland Conference Tournament championship - the first two conference championships in men’s basketball in school history. The Roadrunners had the highest winning percentage in the SLC during 10 of his 11 seasons at UTSA. In 11 years (1996-2006) as the head coach at UTSA, Carter compiled a 160-152 record. Including one season as the head coach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha (1995) he has a record of 171-168. Carter has the distinction of having the third most total wins in Southland Conference history. In 26 seasons on the collegiate level as a head, assistant and graduate assistant coach, Carter has helped lead five different schools into the postseason including Oklahoma (1983 NCAA), Houston (1987 NCAA), Oklahoma State (1989 and 1990 NIT), Northwestern (1994 NIT) and UTSA (1999 and 2004 NCAA). During his tenure at UTSA, Carter recruited and coached some of the top players in school history. He coached five of the six Roadrunner players who have earned Southland Conference First-Team honors, including Devin Brown — the only threetime SLC First-Team selection in school history. Brown is still one of only 17 players in SLC history to have earned AllConference honors three or more times. Two of the most noted players in NBA history - Joe Dumars (Detroit Pistons) of McNeese State (four-time All-SLC honoree) and Karl Malone (Utah Jazz) of Louisiana Tech (three-time All-SLC honoree). Carter also recruited and coached Steve Meyer (1999) and Leroy Hurd (2004) - the Most Valuable Players of the Roadrunners two most recent conference championship teams. Carter helped in the development of Hurd who was named the 2004 Southland Conference Player of the Year (as he led the conference in scoring with a 19.4 points per game). Hurd also averaged 8.0 rebounds in leading UTSA to the conference regular season and tournament championships and into the NCAA tournament. Hurd led the SLC in scoring as both a junior and senior and as an All-District 9 First-Team selection by the NABC in 2004. Carter began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of Oklahoma from 1982-83 and was an assistant coach at Midwestern State University from 1984-86. He helped lead Houston to the NCAA Tournament in 1987 and then joined Leonard Hamilton’s staff at Oklahoma State from 1987-90. While at Oklahoma State, Hamilton and Carter teamed up to lead the Cowboys to the NIT in 1989 and 1990 - the first time the program had played in the postseason since the 1953 and 1954 seasons. Carter earned an associate’s degree from Tim & Sheila Carter Hutchinson (KS.) Community College in 1976, his bachelor’s degree in education from Kansas in 1979 and a master’s in education from Oklahoma in 1984. Carter and his wife, Sheila, have two daughters, Kiara and Kortney, and a son, Wynton. 2007-2008 South Carolina University Men’s Basketball.....Page 19 South Carolina State University Men’s Basketball Asst. Located in the Towne Center in Virginia Beach, VA, the MEAC is made up of 11 outstanding, historically black institutions across the Atlantic Dr. Dennis E. Thomas Coastline: Bethune-Cookman College, Dr. Dennis E. Thomas Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University and South Carolina State University. The MEAC has enjoyed great success over the years in athletics. Currently, the league has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men’s basketball (since 1981), women’s basketball (since 1982) , IAA football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women’s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994). HISTORY In 1969, a group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, NC to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference based along the Atlantic coastline. A number of representatives from different institutions joined the steering committee in a two-day discussion about the new conference. Seven of these institutions agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference: Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland-Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University. The MEAC headquarters remained in Durham, N.C. until 1981, moving to Greensboro March 26, 1982. In August 2005, the MEAC relocated to its current location in Virginia Beach, VA. The league was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in Football in 1971. In 1978, the MEAC selected its first full-time commissioner, Kenneth A. Free and the following year, expanded to nine schools with the admissions of two Florida schools: BethuneCookman College and Florida A&M University. The MEAC operated with nine schools until 1985 when Coppin State College was admitted. The final expansion occurred in the 90’s with the inclusion of Hampton University in 1995 and Norfolk State University in 1997. On June 8,1980, the MEAC was classified Division One by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the following month, received an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship.
