03 CPT002 - 2012v1 Cycling Overview
Cycling CPT002 - Page 1 MacFinish for Cycling MacFinish A photo-finish for cycling requires more memory than for other sports (to record a very large number of competitors in the same race) as well as a higher vertical resolution (to recognize the participants by their small number plate). For this reason the MacFinish 2D 300 is a good choice, as it contains 256Mbyte of internal memory and if required up to 2Gbyte and up to 4.300 frames per second recording speed It is further an understatement to say that the MacFinish 2D versions make the hardware setup easier and faster than ever before; you place the camera with lens on a tripod, connect the battery, the Ethernet cable to your portable PC and your setup is complete. Also notice the large advantage of the overview window, which shows (a part of ) the whole race and your selection inside the (zoomed) photo window. Optionally you can use the MacFinish Ethernet with a wireless connection to your (portable) PC, by using a 2,4 GHz WIFI interface (IEEE802.11g). The MacFinish 2D series uses all the knowledge from our MacFinish II generation in combination with the latest technology in sensor development. The 2 dimensional (2D) sensor known in the digital photo and digital video market is now used to build a state of the art photo finish system. CPT002 - Page 2 TimeTrial The TimeTrial system developed by TimeTronics upon request of the Royal Belgian Cycling Federation is a user-friendly timing system for time-trial. A specific program provides an easy entry and editing of races, distance, data about competitors and starting times. Obviously the daytime at the start location (6x15cm or 6x25cm scoreboard) must be synchronized with the TimeTrial system on PC. Track Contact Scoreboards: - Attached on bridge - Placed into different directions - Name, ID, Place, Running time,.. Backup System Main System TimerBox TimerBox Printer TV-Graphics Before arrival of a participant, his starting number is entered in the program which makes that his running time and name will now appear live on the finish scoreboard and local or international TV. When crossing the finish line, an electronic impulse is generated by a track contact that is taped on the road, and conveyed to the computer program so that the exact finish time and average speed and ranking of the rider are immediately calculated and displayed. The operator can activate the track contact by means of a simple remote control switch (with push button for backup registration). In case two or more riders cross the finish line almost simultaneously, a backup registration is taken by means of the same arrival push button so that a few moments later, the starting numbers of the riders can be manually linked to the corresponding recorded times in the TimeTrial program itself. A LED scoreboard (different sizes and layouts are offered) can combine both the name of the rider and his running or finish time and ranking. The final result of each rider can be displayed on the scoreboard at any time. A handy means to portray the time to beat! An intermediate result or final result sheet can always be printed. On this print-out, the finish times, the differences with the leader and average speeds for each rider are printed in a conveniently arranged layout. Of course all data is also logged onto hard disk and can be exported at any time (during and/or after the event) to a .TXT file onto hard disk, so that it is available for you to be read with Microsoft Excel, Word or any user defined program. The TimeTrial software also provides a live data output on a PC serial line (com x port) to any professional video graphics company to generate live TV screens. CPT002 - Page 3 Track Cycling On a velodrome, most timing occurs automatically by means of taped track contacts, which give the start and/or finish signal(s) to the cycling timer box next to the PC. A total of 4 of these track contacts are installed if you want to time all 9 possible races; 200m sprint, 500m time trial, 1000m time trial, individual pursuit, team pursuit, etc… Push-buttons are also included for the timing of the team pursuit, where the third member of each team is timed each lap manually. The software on the PC, running under Windows 98, 2000 or XP, contains a race selection window and one separate window for each of the possible race types. The optional scoreboard(s) near the track and in the stadium for timing, lap counter, difference time etc. are live updated. What velodrome applications are concerned, the standard TimeTronics 4-digit scoreboards are equipped with a red and green light, to indicate the leader of the pursuit races. All timing data are continuously logged on hard disk of the PC, but also available for serial or data file export to external computer(s) for further race management, TV graphics display or press information. For some races, like the 'elimination' race, the MacFinish photo-finish system is also required and used each lap to identify the last bicycle that crossed the finish line. CPT002 - Page 4 Track Cycling The software on the PC, running under Windows XP or Vista, contains a race selection window and one separate window for each of the possible race types. The optional scoreboard (s) near the track and in the stadium for timing, lap counter, difference time etc. are live updated. As an example; one window of the software, which shows the timing of the Sprint races. Notice the LOG-rectangle in the right-bottom corner, which registers all events during the races, for later verification of any timing event or user-action. These loggings can be saved on hard disk (“Save…” button) for permanent storage. All timing results are of course available for export to different race-processing databases.
