President’s Message
Here we are the middle of September; my how the year has flown by. Keith and I have
rolled up many miles this year with trips for unit rallies, for unit luncheons, for family
events both happy and sad, for International Rally, and for personal and family outings.
Many of those miles have been with our Airstream behind us and I cannot think of any
better way to have travelled them.
We recently returned from the Texas State Railroad Rally in Rusk, TX. This rally turned
into a joint rally with members of the North Texas Unit. Seven members (three rigs) of the
North Texas Unit joined twenty-six members (thirteen rigs) of THLU for this great weekend. We had several first time rally attendees at this rally; the Riggio’s, the Richards’, and
the Perrin’s. It was great getting to know these new folks.
The weekend started off a bit warm but progressively got cooler as the weekend progressed. On Friday the group toured the Columbia Scientific Balloon Facility in Palestine,
TX. This NASA facility builds and launches very large balloons to lift various science
packages to as high as 128,000 feet or about 24 miles up. At that altitude about 97%+ of
the earth’s atmosphere is below the balloon and so the view of space is very clear. The
balloons are basically specialized polyethylene trash bags (trash bags that can occupy more
volume than the Louisiana Superdome) filled with helium and can lift up to 8,000 pounds
payload. The payloads are designed by various organizations from around the USA and the
world for specific studies. The balloons were routinely launched from Palestine but air
traffic control concerns limit launches from there today. Balloons are now launched from
Antarctica, from New Mexico, from Scandinavia, and other places around the world. Lifting heavy payloads by balloon is very cost competitive versus lifting that same payload by
rocket.
The ride on the Texas State Railroad on Saturday was very pleasant; temperatures were
“cool” and humidity was low. We had a great picnic at the Palestine Depot. We even had
a “drive by” by Governor Abbott and company as they rode the steam engine pulled train
in the other direction that day. Our train was pulled by an older diesel engine. It seems
that riding the Texas State Railroad has become a tradition in the first year of any new governor’s term.
There are two unit rallies remaining in my tenure as THLU President. The October Hop
On/Hop Off short caravan/Texas Country Air Rally in Quanah and the November installation rally at the Fredericksburg RV Park in, you guessed it Fredericksburg.

Our generous support of the children in the Rusk
Head Start and Pre-Kindergarten program is
greatly appreciated. We collected over one hundred toothbrushes and sixteen tubes of toothpaste. These will be used to help the children
care for their teeth once they arrive at school. We
also collected 49 packages of colorful, fun underwear as well as 15 pairs of pants, 15 shirts and 3
packages of socks. These will provide extra
clothing for when there are spills and other
“accidents”. Over fifty books were added to the
school library. There were $30 donated which
will also go toward the program.
Rusk Primary School offers a full-day Head Start program for families whose income is below the poverty
level. It also provides a full-day Pre-Kindergarten for economically disadvantaged children. There are currently forty children in the Rusk Head Start program and thirty in Pre-Kindergarten.
Head Start programs began in the summer of 1965 as part of President Lyndon Johnson's War on Poverty.
It began as a program for 3- and 4-year-olds. Head Start promotes school readiness of young children from
low-income families through agencies in their local community. In addition to education services, programs
provide children and their families with health, nutrition, social and other services. Head Start has served
more than 30 million children since 1965.
The starting point of the Hop On/Hop Off Rally has moved to NTAC in Hillsboro, TX. We were going to start
at Cedar Hill State Park but the park remains closed due to flooding damage. I need to know how many folks will
be joining the Hop On/Hop Off Caravan at NTAC on Sunday, October 18. Please let me know ASAP via email ([email protected]) if you are joining us for the caravan and where you will be joining us.
The membership dues renewal bills have been mailed. Please pay your WBCCI international dues of $65 as soon
as possible to qualify for the bonus discount which covers the unit dues of $15. Make checks payable to THLU
and mail them to Jean Beebe.
The THLU installation rally is November 5 – 8 at the Fredericksburg RV Park. Contact the park at 830-990-9582
to make your site reservation. The Christmas Rally at Buckhorn RV Park in Kerrville is the weekend of December 3 – 6. Contact the park (830-895-0007) to make your site reservation. Also, lease let know if you plan to attend these rallies so that the rally hosts can plan accordingly.
Finally, be sure to read the Region 9 news and rally information in this newsletter. The discounted registration
fees end on September 30th. I hope you will join me and Keith for the “Airstream PowWow” in Shawnee, OK.
Best Regards,
Grady Ferry

you want to send checks call me at 254-266-2214 and I will give you an address. I will continue to keep track of which Region
9 units have donated and how much we have collected. If you have questions don't hesitate to call me.
