FFAMILY

2015
CONCLUSION OF THE SYNOD OF BISHOPS
ADDRESS OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS
Dear Brothers and Sisters,
I would like first of all to thank the Lord, who has guided
our synodal process in these years by his Holy Spirit,
whose support is never lacking to the Church.
My heartfelt thanks go to Cardinal Lorenzo Baldisseri,
Secretary General of the Synod, Bishop Fabio Fabene,
its Under-Secretary, and, together with them, the
Relator, Cardinal Peter Erdõ, and the Special
Secretary, Archbishop Bruno Forte, the Delegate
Presidents, the writers, the consultors, the translators
and the singers, and all those who have worked tirelessly and with total dedication to the
Church: My deepest thanks! I would also like to thank the Commission which made the
report; some of them were up all night! I thank all of you, dear Synod Fathers, Fraternal
Delegates, Auditors and Assessors, parish priests and families, for your active and fruitful
participation. And I thank all those unnamed men and women who contributed generously
to the labours of this Synod by quietly working behind the scenes.
Be assured of my prayers, that the Lord will reward all of you with his abundant gifts of
grace! As I followed the labours of the Synod, I asked myself: What will it mean for the
Church to conclude this Synod devoted to the family?Certainly, the Synod was not about
settling all the issues having to do with the family, but rather attempting to see them in the
light of the Gospel and the Church’stradition and two-thousand-year history, bringing the
joy of hope without falling into a facile repetition of what is obvious or has already been
said.Surely it was not about finding exhaustive solutions for all the difficulties and
uncertainties which challenge and threaten the family, but rather about seeing these
difficulties and uncertainties in the light of the Faith, carefully studying them and confronting
them fearlessly, without burying our heads in the sand.
It was about urging everyone to appreciate the importance of the institution of the family
and of marriage between a man and a woman, based on unity and indissolubility, and
valuing it as the fundamental basis of society and human life.It was about listening to and
making heard the voices of the families and the Church’s pastors, who came to Rome
bearing on their shoulders the burdens and the hopes, the riches and the challenges of
families throughout the world. It was about showing the vitality of the Catholic Church, which
is not afraid to stir dulled consciences or to soil her hands with lively and frank discussions
about the family.
It was about trying to view and interpret realities, today’s realities, through God’s eyes, so
as to kindle the flame of faith and enlighten people’s hearts in times marked by
discouragement, social, economic and moral crisis, and growing pessimism. It was about

bearing witness to everyone that, for the Church, the Gospel continues to be a vital source
of eternal newness, against all those who would “indoctrinate” it in dead stones to be
hurled at others. It was also about laying closed hearts, which bare the closed hearts which
frequently hide even behind the Church’s teachings or good intentions, in order to sit in the
chair of Moses and judge, sometimes with superiority and superficiality, difficult cases and
wounded families.
It was about making clear that the Church is a Church of the poor in spirit and of sinners
seeking forgiveness, not simply of the righteous and the holy, but rather of those who are
righteous and holy precisely when they feel themselves poor sinners. It was about trying to
open up broader horizons, rising above conspiracy theories and blinkered viewpoints, so as to
defend and spread the freedom of the children of God, and to transmit the beauty of Christian
Newness, at times encrusted in a language which is archaic or simply incomprehensible. In the
course of this Synod, the different opinions which were freely expressed – and at times,
unfortunately, not in entirely well-meaning ways – certainly led to a rich and lively dialogue; they
offered a vivid image of a Church which does not simply “rubberstamp”, but draws from the
sources of her faith living waters to refresh parched hearts.
And – apart from dogmatic questions clearly defined by the Church’s Magisterium – we
have also seen that what seems normal for a bishop on one continent, is considered strange
and almost scandalous – almost! – for a bishop from another; what is considered a violation
of a right in one society is an evident and inviolable rule in another; what for some is
freedom of conscience is for others simply confusion. Cultures are in fact quite diverse,
and every general principle – as I said, dogmatic questions clearly defined by the Church’s
magisterium – every general principle needs to be inculturated, if it is to be respected and
applied.
We have seen, also by the richness of our diversity, that the same challenge is ever before
us: that of proclaiming the Gospel to the men and women of today, and defending the
family from all ideological and individualistic assaults. And without ever falling into the danger
of relativism or of demonizing others, we sought to embrace, fully and courageously, the
goodness and mercy of God who transcends our every human reckoning and desires only
that “all be saved” (cf. 1 Tm 2:4). In this way we wished to experience this Synod in the
context of the Extraordinary Year of Mercy which the Church is called to celebrated.
With blessings
Holy Father Pope Francis

COMMUNICATIONS
1.
Bishop Returns back Home: Our Bishop came back home safe from his Mission
Tour. He thanked everyone for the good wishes and the prayerful support which
helped for the success of his Mission Tour. Bishop specially thanked all the Deans
for taking care the Administrative matters of the Diocese in his absence.
2.
All Saints Day: All Saints’ Day, also known as All Hallows, Day of All the Saints,
Solemnity of All Saints is a solemnity celebrated on 1 November by the Roman
Catholic Church of Latin rite and various Protestant denominations. All Saints Day,
the day on which Catholics celebrate all the saints, known and unknown, is a
surprisingly old feast. It arose out of the Christian tradition of celebrating the martyrdom
of saints on the anniversary of their martyrdom. When martyrdoms increased during
the persecutions of the late Roman Empire, local dioceses instituted a common feast
day in order to ensure that all martyrs, known and unknown, were properly honored..
In Catholic theology; the day commemorates all those who have attained the beatific
vision in Heaven. It is a national holiday in many historically Catholic countries. In
the Catholic Church and many Anglican churches, the next day specifically
commemorates the departed faithful who have not yet been purified and reached
Heaven. Christians who celebrate All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day do so in the
fundamental belief that there is a prayerful spiritual bond between those in heaven
(the “Church triumphant”), and the living (the “Church militant”).
3.
All Souls Day: All Souls Day is a solemn feast in the Roman Catholic Church
commemorating all of those who have died and now are in Purgatory, being cleansed
of their venial sins and atoning before entering fully into Heaven. The importance of
the feast was made clear by Pope Benedict XV (1914-22), when he granted all priests
the privilege of celebrating three Masses on All Souls Day: one, for the faithful departed;
one for the priest’s intentions; and one for the intentions of the Holy Father. Only on
a handful of other very important feast days are priests allowed to celebrate more
than two Masses.
On All Souls Day, we not only remember the dead, but we apply our efforts, through
prayer, almsgiving, and the Mass, to their release from Purgatory. There are two
indulgences attached to All Souls Day, one for visiting a church and another for
visiting a cemetery. While the actions are performed by the living, the merits of the
indulgences are applicable only to the souls in Purgatory. Praying for the dead is a
Christian obligation. The Church devotes the month of November to pray for the
Holy Souls in Purgatory, and participation in the Mass of All Souls Day is a good
way to begin the month. So let us encourage all our faithful to offer their prayers and
holy masses for the departed souls of their beloved ones.

Celebration of the Year of Consecrated Life of the Religious In Nandyal Parish:
Holy Father Pope Francis has dedicated this year for the Religious consecrated
Priests and Nuns. Our beloved Bishop Rt.
Rev. Poola Anthony called all the four
deaneries of the Diocese to have
meaningful celebrations of this grace filled
event in each respective deaneries.
Hence, we the diocesan clergy of Nandyal
deanery under the guidance of Rev Fr. B.
Marreddy the Dean of Nandyal have come
together to appreciate all the men and
women religious of our deanery on 10th of
October 2015. We cordially invited all of
them on this special day to Nandyal Parish
and celebrated it with all enthusiasm. Rev. Fr. Marreddy, the dean has arranged a
resource person called Rev. Fr. Samson a priest from Cuddapah.
The day was started like this: Fathers and Sisters from all the parishes and institutions
of Nandyal deanery have gathered on this special day by 9:00am and had a cup of
coffee offered. We inaugurated the celebrations solemnly with the lighting of the
lamp by the chief guest and resource person Rev. Fr. Samson, our beloved dean
Rev. Fr. B. Marreddy, Rev. Fr. Y. Joji Reddy parish priest of Pedda Kottala, Rev. Fr.
Prasad OFM, a men religious representative and Rev. Sr. Mary Takla, a women
religious representative while singing a hymn to Holy Spirit and invoking the blessings
from God the Almighty. After which Rev. Fr. B. Marreddy the dean had addressed
the gathering and cordially invited all the fathers and sisters for this celebrations.
Followed by Rev. Fr. Samson the resource person of the day had initiated us with all
his humour to the reflections on Challenges of Religious in today’s world. He reminded
us about the dangers which come on our way as we lead our life. He enlightened us
that we all should represent a real person of Jesus Christ. We should become another
Christ. The life we lead, our words and deeds should correspond our behaviour he
said in his talk.
You walk the talk he said. There is no scope for dual role and mentality. You should
resemble Christ in your life he said. After his valuable talk we relaxed for a while and
came together to adore the Eucharistic Lord who is the source and summit of all our
Religious life. Then all of us have taken part so solemnly and devotedly in the Holy
Banquet of the Lord.Afternoon once again we were in communion with the delicious

meals served. After which we had a fun-time where Rev. Fr. A. Devadas parish
priest of Yerraguntla along with other diocesan priests conducted party games and
a humorous activities. He divided us into four groups and filled us with the team
spirit. He helped us to have an enthusiastic and energetic participation. Groups which
participated have also won prizes. All of us have enjoyed very well.
At the end of the Celebrations all the religious fathers and sisters were honored with
a memento from the Diocese and with a love gift from the deanery Diocesan clergy.
Rev. Fr. Marreddy the dean out of his way was very kind enough and lovable. He
expressed his love to all the invitees by presenting them a beautiful towel as a personal
gift to all. He was really very happy to appreciate them and make them happy. He
had made sure that this day was a memorable day for all the religious of the deanery.
We thank our beloved Bishop Rt. Rev. Poola Anthony for encouraging us to have
this special day of Celebrations of the Religious Consecrated life. At last Fr. Marreddy
had thanked all for having participated actively without fail and also to those who
have contributed to make this day a memorable. After which we had a tea-break and
dispersed to all our respective places.

Closing of Rosary Month at Lourdes Cathedral, Kurnool-2: Month of
October is a month of special grace which we all get through the intercession of Our
Lady of Rosary. Whole month we had a Marian devotion in very catholic family by
taking our Mother Mary’s Statue.
Every Catholic family welcomed her
into their family and sought for
blessing. 31 st October 2015 indeed
was a grace-filled day for the faithful
of Cathedral Parish and its
surrounding villages. In view of
concluding celebrations of Rosary
month we had a grand procession with
Our Lady of Rosary Statue from C.
Camp to Cathedral Church. With much
respect and devotion the procession
was lead towards the Cathedral
Church. It also was great witnessing to the people of Kurnool city. Keenly involvement
of the people brought more prayerful atmosphere on that blessed evening. At 6.00
pm reaching the cathedral His Lordship Anthony Poola hoisted the balloons Rosary
to the sky and presided over the festive Mass and concelebrated by number of
priests and in preaching His Excellency insisted every faithful to recite the Rosary
individually and in the family every day that Our Mother Mary the Mother of God will
accompany us in our day today life. Many not only Catholics but also people of other
denominations participated. Bishop thanked the Parish Priest Fr. Kola Vijayaraju
and Fr. Devadas S, for the meticulous arrangements. The celebration came to an
end with the festive meal served by the faithful of Parish.

1129 students form 50 parishes got educational assistance of Rs.2438500.00 through
this exercise.
Kurnool diocese has small parishes as well as big ones. So taking the number of
beneficiaries is not a criterion. Yet looking at it generally, 83students from Yemmiganur,
the highest number, took advantage of this scholarship, followed by Sunkeswari
with 76 beneficiaries. Banaganapalle and Jupad parishes had 50 students each, the
third highest.
Sunkeswari parish received the highest amount of educational support as scholarship,
Rs. 179000, followed by Yemmiganur, Rs. 160000 and Yerraguntla, Rs. 118000.
Jupad and Banaganapalle join the list of “above one lakh”, with Rs.113500 and
Rs.112000 respectively.
As our diocese emphasizes girls’ education, we may mention the four parishes from
where more than 20 girls made use of this educational assistance: Yemmiganur 29,
Sunkeswari 24, Banaganapalle 23 and Jupad 22.
Kadiri and Krishnapuram deserve mention as these parishes almost never make

use of the DESK services. This time both of them had one beneficiary each and both
were girl students. 12 of 17 participants from P Yaleru and 12 of 18 from Kodumur
were girls. Koilakuntla had a total of 11 students, and 8 of them were of the fairer
sex. Polur and Co-Cathedral had better ratio of girls, 15 girls : 8 boys and 7 girls : 3
boys respectively.

The Prolonged Process of Scholarships: The process of scholarship started in
May. The very first line in all scholarship application forms mentions the date by
which the application should reach DESK office. Bishop Johannes Scholarship says
by July 31 and Diocesan Degree Scholarship application by August 10. Yet DESK
was very lenient, was sending messages to Parish Priests and accepted applications
up to October 8. Then we informed the applicants the position of their applications
with a copy to the Parish Priests and asked them to rectify if their application is
defective. With prior information we went to almost all the parishes with the applications
and requested the students or anybody of theirs to come to any parish of their choice
and do the needful. This way DESK wanted to save the money and time of our poor
people.
Again we sent a final list to the Parish Priests giving time to make good the application
of those who have not responded. Yet some students woke up only on the scholarship
faith formation program day! DESK is sorry for those who did not respond and for
those who kept the application at home and gave us during the rectification drive.
How nice it would be if all respond immediately and avail the services our good
Bishop is placing at our disposal!

PURE WATER IS THE BASE FOR GOOD HEALTH: Gudur Mandal Mudumala

KURNOOL VANI - NOVEMBER 2015
15
October 2015 KDSSS conducted an awareness camp on water. Speaking to the
villagers gathered Fr. KD Joseph explained that drinking contaminated water
(collection of water in the ponds) is the number one cause of illness especially like
cholera and typhoid. It is highly recommendable that you ensure you are drinking
only pure water. During monsoons, the chances of contracting these diseases are
higher as water gets contaminated due to water logging, unsanitary conditions,
open sewage etc. Eating or drinking unhygienic food and water can transmit the
virus easily into your system in turn making you sick. The very first thing to keep in
mind is to drink water that is boiled and filtered. Do not drink tap water as it is not
safe for drinking. When one go out, carry water from home instead of drinking outside
water as you do not know if it is pure or not. If someone is ill, do not drink water from
his bottle or glass or let him drink it from yours as it will spread the infection. People
should not think that draining water through a cloth piece makes it safe for drinking.
Of course this removes some impurities from it, but it does not make it completely
safe for drinking.
There could still be bacteria, viruses and other toxic substances present in it. To
make sure water is fit for drinking; boil the water after filtering it through the cloth.
Once the water starts boiling, keep it boiling for a 1-2 minutes and then let it cool*.
This kills germs present in water and makes it safe for drinking. Store it in a container
and keep it covered.Bore well water is safe to drink than the water in the ponds
stagnant.
Mr. Dhanamaih explained to the group then the activities KDSSS do for community
drinking water programme. As part of KDSSS’ Community Drinking Water Programme
we will be happy to help the communities with bore wells for the community drinking
water purpose only.

noted during these 2 year span of time. We need to overcome these challenges
through strategic planning, and development of system in the Organization said Mrs.
Roopali (CRS). Fr. Anthaiah APTS Forum Director suggested that at least once a
year the GB members should come together for planning though it is not easy, but
not impossible. Mr. Kumar (CARITAS INDIA) said that KDSSS must have a strategy
and planning for the resource mobilization and the responsibilities to be entrusted to
the staff and GB members. We also need to concentrate on resource mobilization
both local and abroad. After the participants’ discussion, Mrs. Roopali presented
the results of Catholic University study and Sense maker study. Both the studies

health awareness camp was held in Kalamandalapadu village on 21st October. The
villagers were happy to welcome the staff of KDSSS for the awareness camp. Mr.
Mohan Das Programme Officer led the sessions and took the orientation class on

amount of care must be taken to be healthy. One is to be hygiene, personal hygiene
and hygiene of the surroundings are very important. Drink safe water, eat clean
food, and wear clean and tidy clothes. Practice certain amount of exercise. Be away
from alcohol and drugs. Not to use tobacco. Children are to be immunized fully.
Take proper medicines when fall sick. Mr. Dhanamaih explained about the TB and
its treatment.
DOT is the best treatment for TB. When one person is coughing continuously for
more than three week, he or she must do sputum test. If the test is positive take
adequate medicine and care. The treatment should be completed within the prescribed
time. One should not be negligent with the treatment. One of our lady health workers
spoke about the care of pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children up to 3
years. Pregnant women should register their names with ANMs, monthly test should
be conducted without fail and note down the weight and height details etc., in the
health cards regularly. Care is must for anyone who wants to be healthy. Villagers

REGIONAL, NATIONAL, AND GLOBAL NEWS
1.
The National Eucharistic Congress NEC: The Archdiocese of Bombay will host
the National Eucharistic Congress from November 12 – 15, 2015 at the St. Pius X
College, Archdiocesan Seminary Complex, Goregaon, in commemoration of the
Golden Jubilee of the 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in this Archdiocese
in 1964.
Based on the theme ‘The Eucharist: Nourished by Christ to Nourish Others’, which
invites all to understand that we are called to become what we consume - to be other
Christs - the 4-day program will
address the challenge of this message
in the Indian context.
One of the highlights of this Congress
will be the Statio Nationalis scheduled
for the concluding day at St Pius. The
participating dioceses will also make a
pilgrimage to the Mata Valankani
Shrine at Bhatebander, Uttan, which
will be followed by a Eucharistic
Adoration. This will give the
participants an opportunity to
experience the faith and culture of the
local community.
The Congress will be attended by the Papal Legate and 5 representatives from each
of the 167 dioceses and archdioceses, encompassing the Latin, Syro-Malankara
and Syro-Malabar rites. Each day will witness the celebration of the Eucharist under
the different rites.
His Holiness, Pope Francis’ message and blessing will be conveyed via video
recorded especially for the occasion.
The three brush strokes, in the colours of the Indian flag, come together to form the
Body of Christ, in effect representing the coming together of the Christian communities
of India. The Cross - formed by the brush strokes and the stalk/sheaf of wheat represents the Eucharist and its call to be nourishment for others.

His Eminence,
Oswald Cardinal Gracias, President of the National Eucharistic Congress,
together with His Lordship, Bishop Dominic Savio Fernandes, presided at
The Launch of The National Eucharistic Congress:
26
KURNOOL VANI - NOVEMBER 2015
an event, held on August 15, 2015, to release the logo, prayer, hymn and
website for the forthcoming National Eucharistic Congress 2015. The
occasion was attended by members of the Curia, dignitaries from among
the Catholic fraternity and also Religious from the neighbouring
Congregations. It was significant that this event took place in the same
hall, at the Archbishop’s residence, that witnessed many meetings during
the historic 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in Mumbai in
1964.
The program commenced with a prayer for guidance and help that the National
Eucharistic Congress 2015 may bear abundant fruit for the Church in India; this was
followed by the hymn, ‘Spirit of the Living God’, a reading from Scripture and
intercessions.
His Eminence, Oswald Cardinal Gracias addressed the audience, and provided an
overview of the theme and events for this Congress.
The theme – Nourished by Christ, to Nourish Others – encourages us to be filled
with the Lord through the Eucharist and to carry this nourishment to others. His
Eminence presented the different ways in which Christ, during his time on earth,
nourished the people around Him: He physically, emotionally and spiritually gave
himself to the marginalized, the poor, the needy and even the dead by strengthening,
forgiving and loving them as well as breathing into them, life.
Jesus continuously revealed the mystery of the Eucharist through His teachings
and miracles, and at the Last Supper he gave us this precious gift. We celebrate the
significance of the Eucharist in our lives, in a very special way, through the Eucharistic
Congresses. His Eminence expressed the desire to keep alive the spirit of the
International Eucharistic Congress held in 1964 and the Archdiocesan Eucharistic
Congress held in 2014, as we celebrate the National Eucharistic Congress 2015. In
this way, the fruits of the Congresses will continue to reach and benefit the faithful all
over India.
It is fitting that August 15 - Independence Day and the Feast of the Assumption of
the Blessed Virgin Mary – was chosen to launch the National Eucharistic Congress.
Independence Day is the perfect time to recollect our call to be a truly Indian Church
and the Feast of the Assumption is a powerful reminder of our devotion to the
Eucharistic Lord. As pointed out by His Eminence, Our Lady’s womb was the first
Tabernacle and we, too, are called to be like Mary – we must carry the Lord in our
hearts and share His gift of salvation with others.
His Eminence sent out this exhortation to all: appreciate the Eucharist, live the

Eucharist and share the Eucharist. It is only when we are filled with the Spirit of the
Lord through the Eucharist that we are able to serve others. All Christians are invited
to follow in the Lord’s footsteps through the
National Eucharistic Congress which will take
place during November 12 – 15, 2015. Our
action in service will have a magnanimous
effect, starting with one person nourishing his/
her family, the family in turn reaching out to the
parish, the parish helping the diocese, thus
enabling a vast transformation. The Logo, which
was designed by the Archdiocese of Bombay
Catholic Communication Centre, was
presented by Mr. Roger Pereira, Member,
National Eucharistic Congress Steering
Committee.
The music of the Hymn for the National Eucharistic Congress was composed by
Clint Cerejo; the lyrics were penned by Dominique Cerejo – who also sang the hymn
for this event - and Fr. Reuben Tellis. The Prayer was recited for the very first time,
and will now be translated into various languages and sent to parishes in the
Archdiocese and across India.
In addition to the release of the logo, the prayer and the hymn, the event also witnessed

JUBILEE OF MERCY – DESCRIPTION OF THE LOGO: The logo and the
motto together provide a fitting summary of what the Jubilee Year is all about. The
motto Merciful Like the Father (taken from the Gospel of Luke, 6:36) serves as an
invitation to follow the merciful example of the Father who asks us not to judge or
condemn but to forgive and to give love and forgiveness without measure (cfr. Lk
6:37-38). The logo – the work of Jesuit Father Marko I. Rupnik – presents a small
summa theologiae of the theme of mercy. In fact, it represents an image quite important
to the early Church: that of the Son having taken upon his shoulders the lost soul
demonstrating that it is the love of Christ that brings to completion the mystery of his
incarnation culminating in redemption. The logo has been designed in such a way so

as to express the profound way in which the Good
Shepherd touches the flesh of humanity and does so with
a love with the power to change one’s life. One particular
feature worthy of note is that while the Good Shepherd,
in his great mercy, takes humanity upon himself, his eyes
are merged with those of man. Christ sees with the eyes
of Adam, and Adam with the eyes of Christ. Every person
discovers in Christ, the new Adam, one’s own humanity
and the future that lies ahead, contemplating, in his gaze,
the love of the Father.
The scene is captured within the so called mandorla (the
shape of an almond), a figure quite important in early and
medieval iconography, for it calls to mind the two natures of Christ, divine and human.
The three concentric ovals, with colors progressively lighter as we move outward,
suggest the movement of Christ who carries humanity out of the night of sin and
death. Conversely, the depth of the darker color suggests the impenetrability of the
love of the Father who forgives all.

PROCLAIMING THE HOLY YEAR AT THE HOLY DOOR: VATICAN CITY —
Saturday evening, in front of the Holy Door in the atrium of St. Peter’s Basilica, Pope
Francis’ will give the archpriests of the major basilicas
of Rome copies of his “bull of indiction,” or formal
proclamation, of the Holy Year of Mercy. An aide will
read portions of it at the door before participants process
into St. Peter’s for evening prayer.
The Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica.
The site chosen for the brief rite was not made casually;
the door symbolizes a passage or transition into a special
year of evangelization and prayer.
Pope Francis will be back at the door Dec. 8 to formally
open it and the Year of Mercy.
Popes typically announce a jubilee every 25 years,
although extraordinary Holy Years have been proclaimed for special anniversaries — for
example, a Holy Year was celebrated in 1983 to commemorate the 1,950th anniversary
of Christ’s death and resurrection.
The Holy Door is opened to evoke the concept of forgiveness, which is the main
focus of a Holy Year.According to “Mondo Vaticano,” a mini-encyclopedia published

by the Vatican, the designation of a Holy Door may trace back to the ancient Christian
practice of public penitence when sinners were given public penances to perform
before receiving absolution. The penitents were not allowed to enter a church before
completing the penance, but they were solemnly welcomed back in when their
penance was fulfilled. Still today, Holy Year pilgrims enter the basilica through the
Holy Door as a sign of their repentance and recommitment to a life of faith.
Both the opening and closing of the Holy Door take
place with formal ceremonies to mark “the period of
time set aside for men and women to sanctify their
souls,” the book says. The ritual for opening the
Holy Door at St. Peter’s Basilica goes back to 1499
when Pope Alexander VI opened the door on
Christmas Eve to inaugurate the Holy Year 1500.
This was when the door was wooden. The bronze
door panels that stand at St. Peter’s today, made
by Vico Consorti, were consecrated and first
opened Dec. 24, 1949, by Pius XII in proclamation
of the 1950 Jubilee, a scene represented in the
bottom right panel.
For centuries, the doors were opened with a silver
hammer, not a key, “because the doors of justice
and mercy give way only to the force of prayer and penance,” the encyclopedia
says. Opening the Holy Year 2000, St. John Paul used neither a hammer, nor a key,
but strongly pushed the door open.
St. John Paul II pushes open the Holy Door on Dec. 24, 1999.
The theme of human sin and God’s mercy is illustrated in 15 of the 16 bronze panels
that make up the current door, with episodes from both the Old and New Testament,
including the Fall of Adam and Eve, the Annunciation, and the Merciful Father (and
Prodigal Son).
Between the panels on the door at St. Peter’s are little shields with the coats of arms
of all the popes that opened it during the ordinary Holy Years, the last being St. John
Paul. Pope Francis’ coat of arms will be etched onto one of the empty shields that
remain for future jubilee years after he opens and closes the door. Pope Francis will
give the “bull of indiction” also to the archpriests of the Rome basilicas of St. John
Lateran, St. Paul Outside the Walls and St. Mary Major, which also have Holy Doors
that are opened during jubilee years. The only other Holy Doors in the world are at
