AB KARL HEDIN
AB KARL HEDIN is a family-owned sawmill and trading group in
Central Sweden and Estonia, with forestry raw materials as its base. The
flow of timber links all our business operations units. The raw material unit
supplies our Swedish sawmills with timber and the sawmills supply the
packaging factories and planing mills with sawn timber. The planing mills
supply our own builder merchants with construction, impregnated and
primed timber.
The company was founded at the beginning of the 1900s and has, today,
close to 725 employees and a turnover of approx. SEK 2.4 billion. Total
production is approx 660 000m3, of which 150 000m3 are planed and
processed wood products and approx. 55 000m3 are packaging products.
AB Karl Hedin has a chain of builder merchants with outlets in 27 towns in
Dalarna, Härjedalen, Hälsingland, Södermanland, Värmland, Västmanland
and the Örebro region. AB Karl Hedin has also been involved in sawmill
production in the Baltic States since the middle of the 90s.
For us at AB Karl Hedin the forest is not just a place for relaxation and
recreation, but a place where fine houses, garages, skirting board and
architrave grow.

Products
Roof Trusses
The roof truss factory in Rättvik manufactures and sells approx. 5 000 roof
trusses annually. There are a number of standard designs, however, specially
designed roof trusses are made to order.
Stable Litter
AB Karl Hedin stable litter is a clean and dust-free wood shavings product.
A product we collect at our planing mill in Västanfors and pack in bales.
Construction Timber
The most common dimensions of construction timber, joists of varying
qualities, tongue and groove, etc., are all planed by AB Karl Hedin. When
it comes to carcassing we have complemented the usual sorted and stressgraded carcassing grades with a spruce carcassing which is of a high quality
with respect to warping as well as other aspects. All the carcassing timber is
stocked in long lengths.
Impregnated timber
The impregnated assortment includes a large number of dimensions of
decking boards and both are planed and sawn timber. All the products are
pressure treated with an impregnating solution which does not contain
chrome or arsenic. For environmental reasons, since 2003 we have limited
our pressure treatment to AB class and A class for special orders.
Internal and external panelling
We stock a wide range of internal and external panelling for the Swedish
building market. This panelling is manufactured in accordance with Swedish standards. See all the profiles available under Kabenning Planing Mill.

Precision sawn products
An increasing percentage of our carcassing timber and external panelling
production is precision sawn in accordance with the customer’s wishes.
Priming
At the planing mill in Karbenning there is a priming line for the painting
of external panelling. We work together with our paint supplier to keep up
to date regarding the development of paint, etc. We prime our timber with
a linseed oil alkyd which has very good penetration and coverage properties
and is also compatible with most types of top coat. We are further developing
the production of external panelling in order to reach the best possible
results for this ready-painted product.
Components
At the planning mill in Krylbo we produce planed and precision sawn
components for the manufacture of prefabricated houses, furniture and
internal joinery products.

Raw material
Almost a century ago our first sawmill opened. Then the goal was already to
get as much value as possible out of the timber. And perhaps that is exactly
why the forest owners always return to us.
Over the years we have accumulated extensive experience. Most of us have
worked in the forest sector for a long time, and therefore possess knowledge
that stretches back generations. Our strength lies in our ability to combine old
forestry knowledge with the new as well as our commitment and effectiveness.
Today, AB Karl Hedin supplies the whole chain with raw material. This can
be done through the company’s own raw material organisation, via its own
log buyers. This helps us meet the needs of our industries, but also benefits
the individual forest owners through more special lines that provide a better
profit within forestry.

Sawmill
For AB Karl Hedin sawmills it is vitally important to be the local alternative
for forest owners in our immediate vicinity. Through our three sawmills,
Karbenning, Krylbo and Säter, we have the means to process the whole of
tree handling, for both small and large diameter logs. In Säter we process
large pine logs of the highest quality; in Karbenning we process both standard pine timber as well as spruce for construction timber; and in Krylbo
we process pine and spruce blocks in smaller dimensions (3 metres) which
are also used for construction timber. As a result of our wide product range,
we can maximise the timber yield and thus increase forest owners’ returns
compared to harvesting the timber for pulp production.
All of the sawmills dry their own timber in modern chamber and travelling
dryers. Distribution is carried out by lorry and container train, direct to the
customer or port for further transportation by boat.
AB Karl Hedin sawmills produce a total of approx 660 000m3 sawn wood
products and employ around 300 people.
AB Karl Hedin is one of Sweden’s largest privately owned sawmill groups,
with three sawmills in the Bergslags region, Säter, Karbenning and
Krylbo Sawmill, and one in southeast Estonia, Toftan Sawmill.
The Säter Sawmill processes high quality pine timber. The production of
the sawmill amounts to approx. 47 000m3 of sawn wood products produced
from 285 000 logs. The mill produces high quality joinery and panel timber.
The main market for these products is Scandinavia; however, some are
exported to England and the Middle East.

Sawmill, continuation
Karbenning Sawmill, which is situated just outside of Norberg, processes
both spruce and pine timber in lengths of 4.3m and 5.5m and diameters
from 17 to 40cm. The processed volume amounts to 220 000m3 of sawn
products processed from approx 1.6 million logs. The products are used in
glulam timber and construction timber. Karbenning’s main market is the
Swedish building industry. Other important markets are Japan, Europe and
North Africa.
Krylbo Sawmill is a small diameter sawmill which processes both pine and
spruce timber solely in the length of 3.05m, the so called “Krylbo blocks”
(Krylbokubb). The processed volume amounts to 205 000m3 of sawn
products produced from approx 6 million logs. The manufactured products
are glulam, construction timber as well as packaging timber. Krylbo’s main
market is Japan.
Toftan Sawmill in Estonia specialises in pine timber. Toftan Mill
processes all lengths and pine up to 40cm in diameter, as well as spruce
timber. Production totals 190 000m3 wood products produced from 1.45
million logs. The products produced include joinery timber, glue jointed
goods and construction products for the domestic and export markets.

Packaging Factories
AB Karl Hedin is one of Sweden’s largest manufacturers
of specialist wood packaging.
We produce packaging at five plants in Central Sweden: Krylbo, Årsunda,
Rättvik, Jularbo and Skultuna.
Our customers place tough demands on our service, lead times, quality,
prompt deliveries and production capacity. Our prompt delivery service
is enhanced by the fact that we are a part of a sawmill group with planing
mills that guarantee our supply of timber.
Our main emphases are on pallets for the forestry industry, both with or
without plastic covers, and pallets and boxes for the steel and manufacturing
industries – an area where we also have the capacity to produce large and
heavy packaging.
Today we have several capable designers, however, we will be strengthening
our sales organisation with more design competence and drawing capacity.
We can also offer our customers an IT connection for ordering and or
invoicing.
The Krylbo Packaging factory is the oldest and largest factory within the
AB Karl Hedin group of companies. The focus at Krylbo is on pallets and
boxes with furnishings. These are sold mainly to the steel industry but also
to other sectors of Swedish industry. The Krylbo factory is the Swedish
market leader for really large and heavy packaging constructions in wood
packaging.
At our Årsunda factory there is a sheet plant for the manufacture of
corrugated packaging, mainly in thicker qualities in shorter series (<500
ex). The facility is oriented towards combination packaging (e.g., wood +
plywood) and customers who want holistic solutions by purchasing all of
their packaging from one supplier.
The Rättvik packaging factory produces made-to-measure roof trusses in
accordance with our customers’ wishes, and also pallets in shorter series,
where the forestry and pulp industries are the main customers.
We manufacture: W-truss, frame work truss, scissor truss and pen truss,
as well as specialised roofing. The only thing the customer needs to do is
supply roof dimensions and preferably a sketch of the roof trusses. Supplied
with these details, our experienced engineers can produce both calculations
and drawings.

Packaging Factories,

The Jularbo packaging factory only produces pallets, in shorter series, where
the forestry and pulp industries are the main customers.
Jularbo manufactures a patented special pallet with a layer of plastic between
the underframe and the decking. We are very proud of this pallet at AB Karl
Hedin Packaging and the fact that our customers greatly appreciate it.
The Skultuna packaging factory produces packaging made of wood, cardboard, plywood and different types of laminate. Two of the products
Skultuna produces are barrier bags and Ply boxes. The barrier bags are a
product made of laminated plastics, either alone or in combination with
aluminium. Skultuna packing factory uses VCI-based material, a material
that provides protection against corrosion. This forms a good barrier that
provides the protection that the product needs to reach the customer in the
same condition as when it left the factory.
The Plybox product is a box made of plywood. Plybox comes folded for easy
mounting in packing and shipping of products. Plybox is available in different
styles, from composite beams to movable sides or ends, with a thickness of six
or eight millimetres. The boxes could also be delivered with different types of
locking systems.

Planing Mills
AB Karl Hedin has two planing mills, Karbenning planning mill and Krylbo
planning mill. The timber that is found at our builders’ merchants comes
chiefly from Karbenning Planing Mill and the raw materials from one of our
sawmills: Krylbo, Karbenning, Säter’s Steam Sawmill or Toftan in Estonia
Karbenning planning mill produces building materials mainly for the
Swedish market as well as a smaller quantity for export. In addition, prefabricated house construction kits are supplied to the Swedish market. There
is even a line for priming the outer panelling.
One of the many quality products produced at the Karbenning Planing
Mill is Hedin carcassing (Hedinregel). It is a cut-to-length product made
from quality raw materials. It is available in dimensions from 45x45mm up
to 45x220mm and in lengths of 3.0/4.0/4.8 and 5.4m. It is a product that
is much appreciated by our builder merchants’ customers because of its
quality, but also due to its fixed lengths, which makes it easier to work out
material usage.
The Krylbo Planing Mill is a small but flexible planing mill, where it is
possible to cut the planed timber to length on the line. This facility is in
great demand and much appreciated by our customers. It is principally
prefabricated house manufacturers and glulam factories that take advantage
of this facility.

Bergslags Panel,
Karbenning
Bergslags panel is an outer panel that is first basic primed and then primed
one more time. It gives you time to do things other than painting. The
basic work is done in a closed environment, to prevent spores and other
contaminants from entering. It gives you a painted facade that is optimised
for durability. The Bergslags panel saves you time and effort both in the set
time, and for many years to come.
In 2004 the priming line at the mill was modernised and since then demand
for Hedin primed (Hedingrund) has increased sharply. The development of
ready-primed timber has progressed during recent years. Paint and application
techniques have improved continuously and the benefits have not gone
unnoticed by our customers.

Stable Litter,
Västanfors
AB Karl Hedin stable litter consists of compressed bales of dust-free pure
wood shavings. The raw materials are shavings from spruce or pine from our
planers.
Sold in 25kg bales, 15 bales per pallet.

AB Karl Hedin Industrial and Building Trade is spread over 27 locations in
central Sweden (see map). There are a total of 325 employees and we have a
turnover of approximately 1.4 billion.
Each store is adapted to local conditions prevailing in each area. This
applies to both range and unique customer solutions. Common to all stores
is the high quality and long-term view you can see when you look at our
products. The timber you buy often comes from our own forests, our own
sawmill and our own processing plant.
