RETAIL INTERIOR The ever-changing face of retail design is embodied in the shortlisted projects in this category. From the single outlet to the multistore big brand, design is sophisticated yet measured to present a total consumer-savvy strategy. KEY PR PRACTICE PH PHOTOGRAPHER 01– CINEMA 1 – BALMORAL CINEPLEX PR HOT CONCEPTS DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT GROUP PH STEWART ROSS Given the Balmoral’s status as one of the only original theatres left in Brisbane, the need to preserve its rich history was paramount. As such, the prime of its glamorous 1920s inception has been revisited to include a ‘Wonderland’ moment, where patrons walk through a succession of various scale doors, to reveal a giant room of opulence. 02– TONI AND GUY SALON, PORT MELBOURNE PR TRAVIS WALTON ARCHITECTURE PH DEREK SWALWELL Representing a new design direction for the iconic hairdresser, the salon features a mezzanine with a private colour salon and a concealed hair washroom below. A minimal but luxurious palette of black steel and American oak wall panelling infuses the space with a subtle blend of a historic warehouse and sleek sophistication. 03– WALKER AND JONES COFFEE TRADERS PR LUCHETTI KRELLE PH MICHAEL WEE A pint-sized hole-in-the-wall café, where space efficiency is paramount, is coddled within a steel wrapped facade that frames exposed concrete blockwork and steel bi–fold windows, which close the box-like shop of raw materials, where tiny tables hang from the wall and provide a perch to stay and enjoy the friendly hospitality and the open kitchen. 04– ALANNAH HILL EMPORIUM PR TRAVIS WALTON ARCHITECTURE PH DEREK SWALWELL A subtle layering of soft neutral tones with highlights of rich colour set against simple brass metal detailing, the entire store appears to glow from within, while an explosion of floral colour with floor–to– ceiling wallpaper works with the limed European oak timber parquetry floor to deliver a feminine retail experience of sophisticated charm. 05– BIBA EMPORIUM PR TANDEM DESIGN STUDIO PH CONCETTINA INSERRA Bringing elements of BIBA’s street smart urban aesthetic to a shopping centre environment, the full-height timber screens with super graphic graffiti tags create a series of over-scaled intimate interiors, while a suspended double-sided mirror hangs centrally in the cutting zone, creating privacy, extending the perception of space and multiplying the framed views. 06– MOVE PR IDEAWORKS PH IVY WU Appealing to the fast-growing audience of tech-savvy, cyberconnected, style–conscious youth, MOVE embraces technology as culture, which, like fashion, is constantly changing. As such, regular exclusive collaborations with local fashion designers, such as Romance Was Born, are delivered in an environment of timber and low lighting that evokes fashion cues. 07– QI MASTER REFLEXOLOGY PR PINTO TUNCER PH LYNTON CRABB Leveraging cultural authenticity through an edgy, bold, yet recognisably Chinese language, the project’s visual language is less about pastiche than it is about contemporary Chinese references and materiality, reflecting the self-assured dynamism of current Chinese society as a multilayered theatrical landscape that captivates the passer-by, while providing a completely immersive environment for the user within. 08– ADRIANO ZUMBO PATISSERIE PR ELENBERG FRASER PH PETER CLARKE Culinary luminary, Adriano Zumbo’s first Melbourne patisserie needed to be something that stood out from the pack – and that’s where Elenberg Fraser came in. The practice took experimentation to the next level with the ‘Graduate School’ – up-cycled old pieces of furniture were transformed into larger-than-life confectionary creations, while walls were made magical with vacuum-formed and metallised wall panels. 09– GREENWOOD DISPLAY SUITE PR PTW AND LAVA PH BRETT BOARDMAN Hallmarked by fluid luminosity, the project comprises an organicshaped marketing suite, with cool white surfaces and freeform furniture. Transformed by a merger of natural materials with high-tech fabrication technologies, this former 1960s Sydney Water Board lobby promotes an immediate sensory experience to entice prospective buyers and dramatically announce Greenland’s presence in Sydney. 10– WHITES DISPENSARY PR STUDIO EQUATOR PH ANNE-SOPHIE POIRIER Distinctly different within an industry that has a traditional aesthetic, Whites Dispensary features reclaimed wooden horizontal panelling that cloaks the facade, while an organic use of materials and authentic medicinal symbols support the overall design. Bespoke large-scale three–dimensional typographical forms were designed and hand-made as a central visual point for both signage and shelving. 11– SSTUDIO IA PR TEAM M8 PH JAMES DORE Based on the concept of creating a product-based experiential retail environment, a modest materials palette and simple spatial planning allows visual clarity, with synchronicity between the fitout, product and brand. Versatile and moveable joinery allows for an expedient change of merchandise, while the succinct materials palette proclaims and unifies brand identity. 12– THE WINDSOR ANNEX PR HECKER GUTHRIE PH ARMELLE HABIB Conceived by Elwood as a collaboration with The Studio of Hecker Guthrie, the project brought to life a new direction for the Elwood brand within a decidedly male milieu of detailed and honestly structured materiality that includes custom lighting by Volker Haug, furniture by Henry Wilson and fabulous rugs woven with denim. 13– AESOP EMPORIUM PR KERSTIN THOMPSON ARCHITECTS PH DEREK SWALWELL Luxuriating in the singular use of spotted gum timber, this sustainably sourced hardwood ply, creates an immersive space that is intimate and visually calm. The warm hue of the timber complements the product and the simple forms of the store are enriched through the expression of the timber’s grain. 14– MYER CENTRE FOOD COURT PR ARKHEFIELD PH DYLAN EVANS Bringing clarity to the chaotic Myer Centre Food Court, Arkhefield has celebrated the chaos, the location and the young teenage market by creating an urban landscape traversing the site. Limited to refurbishing the negative space between tenancies, the delivery supports the diverse tenancy within a new legible narrative. 15– CANNING BUTCHERS PR FIONA LYNCH PH SHARYN CAIRNS Referencing the building’s 1960s heritage, a modernist approach was taken to this purveyor of meat and seafood, resulting in strong clean lines and a minimalist feel, where texture and material create visual interest. Made from stone, timber and polished chrome, an 11-metre central island fridge provides an exceptional focal point. 24– WINE REPUBLIC PR RED DESIGN GROUP PH JAMES NEWMAN Positioned in the art grunge scene of Melbourne’s iconic Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, this new concept bottle shop is visually united by an 800-bottle lighting sculpture nicknamed the ‘Wine Cloud’, sculptural graphics and a hand-drawn shopfront illustration. Softening the whole is a diagonal zigzag pattern, using smooth and rough finish tiles. © 2014 Niche Media Pty Ltd. All rights reserved.
