The 16,000 square foot site is peppered with large indigenous fir and cedar trees. The owners desire was for a melding of Asian influenced Northwest, with the craftsmanship and details of the houses by Charles and Henry Greene. The construction is a hybrid of conventional wood and timber framing. The trusses bear on peeled Port Orford cedar pole columns, which either set on the T&G Madrona flooring or were site shaped to rest on a river boulder. Fireplaces and exterior trellis bases are also clad in rock, which is a blend of river rock and tumbled sandstone cobbles. Vertical grain fir was used for windows, trim and cabinetry including custom display cabinetry for the owners’ collection of Northwest Indian artifacts. The exterior of the house is clad in cedar shingles and cedar trim. These contrast with the natural fir color of the 6x6 fir roof purlins exposed at the eaves. Copper caps the ends of the brackets supporting the gable ends. S e m i ah m o o B a y This beautiful 3,200 square foot home has a detached timber framed carport. It sits on a one-and-a-half acre waterfront lot on Semiahmoo Bay. This home has conventional two-by-six wall framing with exposed heavy timber structure and a Structural Insulated Panel (SIP) roof. The existing character of mature northwest forest and sunset views across Semiahmoo Bay was the client’s main attraction to the site. The site was carefully surveyed and mapped to locate existing firs and cedars. The house, carport, and driveway were carefully located to preserve as many of these trees as possible. Important spaces to the homeowners include the open kitchen/living room space with a cozy inglenook dining area, a central home office for both the owners, and the outdoor room which features a retractable “Nanawall,” wood stove, and a bar that opens up to the outdoor deck and views beyond. This is a comfortable and handsome building that seems perfectly at home in its classic northwest landscape.
