Celebrate Father's Day with Gypsy Jazz Masters from the Motor City!
Featuring: Even Perri-lead guitar, Julien Labro-accordion, Ivan Pena, rhythm
guitar, and Jordan Schug-acoustic bass.
The Hot Club of Detroit is one of the world’s leading jazz ensembles specializing in the
Gypsy jazz sound made famous by guitarist Django Reinhardt. HCOD was formed in 2001
by Reinhardt disciple and virtuoso guitarist Evan Perri. The group quickly became a
favorite in area clubs and signed with Mack Avenue Records, releasing the self-titled “Hot
Club of Detroit” in 2006 to much acclaim, following it with “Night Town” in 2008, “It's
About That Time” in 2010, and “Junction” in 2012.
Evan Perri (lead guitar)
Although he claims to have no Gypsy blood in him, Hot Club founder Evan Perri spent
nearly six years roaming the campuses of five different colleges in search of the right
music program: Berkelee College of Music, Musictech College in Minneapolis, Western
Michigan, before settling in at Wayne State University in Detroit. He is the son of a jazz
guitarist, but Evan did not pick up a guitar until age 16. However, while still a fan of
greats like Joe Pass, Pat Martino, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, he vividly
remembers hearing Django for the first time and thinking, "This is it. This is what I've
been looking for." The HCOD was born out of his desire to recreate the sound he describes
as "Parisian Café 1936, but with better sound equipment" in Detroit.
Julien Labro (accordion)
Julien Labro is renowned as one of today’s foremost accordion and bandoneón players,
whom critics have deemed to be “a triple threat: brilliant technician, poetic melodist and
cunning arranger,” an “A-list star.” Picking up the accordion at the age of 9, French-born
Labro graduated from the Marseille Conservatory of Music and has won numerous
international competitions.
From early on, Labro was influenced by traditional folk music and the lyrical qualities of
the French chanson; and inspired by the freedom and creativity of jazz.
Labro has been enlisted as a composer and arranger for several professional ensembles.
As a soloist, he has appeared with numerous orchestras internationally, including the
Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, the Lebanese Philharmonic
Orchestra, the Royal Oman Orchestra, and many more. Touring and collaborating with
artists such as saxophonists Miguel Zenón, and James Carter, Lebanese oud master
Marcel Khalife, as well as Grammy award winners Cassandra Wilson, João Donato,
Fernando Otero, and Jason Vieaux, Labro has performed to critical acclaim throughout the
world.
Ivan Peña (rhythm guitar)
Ivan Peña was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma to a family from Peru. He began singing religious
and classical music in the Tulsa Boys Choir at age seven. He picked up the guitar in
Booker T. Washington’s high school jazz band. Since then he has forged a career as a jazz
guitarist performing around the United States and Europe.
Jordan Schug (bass)
Originally from Southeast Michigan, Jordan Schug studied music at the Univ of North
Texas, studying under Lynn Seaton. He then returned to Michigan and has been continuing
his music career there ever since. Aside from playing the double bass Jordan is also a jazz
cello player. He has shared the stage with many world class musicians, including Richie
Cole, John Clayton, Gerald Clayton, James Carter, Jon Hendricks, Cyrille Aimee. He
received his master degree from the University of Michigan School of Music in 2014.

Quartet featuring:
Joyce Moreno-guitar & vocals, Tutty Moreno-drums & percussion, Rodolfo
Stroeter-acoustic & electric bass, & Helio Alves-piano.
With special guest opening act vocalist, & guitarist, Moises Borges.
“…One of the best singers of all times!… As if it weren’t enough, Joyce is a great
composer and plays ace guitar! What an amazing woman!”
Antonio Carlos Jobim, 1987.
“Joyce is a Brazilian treasure”
DownBeat magazine, 2010.
"Her musical capacity surprised me when, years later, she reemerged playing
guitar like the best (in the land of João Gilberto, Dori [Caymmi], [Gilberto] Gil, and
João Bosco, this is not a bagatelle), her singing precisely tuned, writing songs with
original harmonic and melodic imagination."
Caetano Veloso - 2011
Born in Rio de Janeiro, the singer, composer, arranger and instrumentalist JOYCE
MORENO has in her portfolio 400 recordings of songs she has authored,
interpreted by the greatest names in Brazilian popular music: Elis Regina, Gal
Costa, Maria Bethânia, Milton Nascimento, Ney Matogrosso, Edu Lobo, Emilio
Santiago, Boca Livre, Nana Caymmi, Zizi Possi, Elizeth Cardoso, Simone, Leny
Andrade, Mônica Salmaso, and many others. Beyond Brazil, Joyce’s work has been
recorded by Annie Lennox, Wallace Roney, Omara Portuondo, Black Eyed Peas,
David Sanchez, Jon Lucien, Claus Ogerman, Gerry Mulligan, Till Brönner, and Flora
Purim, to name a few. Joyce’s compositions have been featured in film soundtracks
(e.g., The Player by Robert Altman and Legally Blonde by Robert Luketic),
animations (the Japanese anime Wolf’s Rain, in partnership with composer Yoko
Kanno), TV programs, and theatrical productions. Since the beginning of her
career, Joyce’s registered trademark has been the first-person feminine voice,
which she pioneered; she was the first Brazilian songwriter to express herself in
this form, opening the way for countless other artists who followed.
Joyce received four nominations for the Latin Grammy. To date, she has released
33 personal CDs and two DVDs, in addition to numerous compilations and guest
appearances. Currently, her work takes her all over the world; she makes annual
tours and records new albums in various countries, never losing her feminine
Brazilian identity. Each year she performs on the Japanese Blue Note circuit and
tours jazz festivals and other venues in Europe and North America.
This is an extremely unique opportunity to see and hear one of the
legends of Brazilian jazz. Don't miss this concert!

World Class Bluesmen orbits in to Nighttown with his Swinging
and Soulful 8 Piece Band with Full Horn Section!
Travis Haddix began playing the piano at the age of seven in his home town of
Walnut, Mississippi, located thirty miles south of Memphis, Tennessee. The turning
point in his musical learning experience came when he was eight, when the
legendary B.B. King came to Memphis and began playing daily at the studios of
WDIA. Travis was awed by King;s guitar virtuosity and he hung around the radio
station every day to learn all he could. Soon, Travis' piano playing fell by the
wayside and was replaced by the guitar, which he plays on stage and in the studio.
Years later, the Haddix family moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin where Travis, now a
budding star, continued to refine his craft by singing and playing throughout the
North. The original "Moonchild", he earned the nickname from his beaming
presence on stage and his always broad smile and energetic, sexy performances,
In 1959, Travis moved to Cleveland, Ohio where he joined the D.L. Rocco Band and
achieved regional notoriety that led to a prominent spot with the Little Johnnie
Taylor group. Travis also contributed material to five albums by Artie "Bluesboy"
White. His material is also covered by Artie “blues boy” White, Dickie Williams,
Jimmy Dawkins, Michael Burks, Charles Wilson, the late Son Seals, and Lee Shot
Jimmy Dawkins, Michael Burks, Charles Wilson, the late Son Seals, and Lee Shot
Williams.
Haddix has received rave reviews in Living Blues Magazine, Blues Revue, Real
Blues, Big City, Jefferson and Audience Magazine, and he has toured Europe since
1992. His style evokes the sounds of the great Stax-Volt days, when the likes of
Sam & Dave ruled the urban blues roost. His fifth release on Ichiban Records is A
Big Ole Goodun', featuring the Travis Haddix band (together since 1988). He
proves, once again, that he is a fixture in the modern blues industry with songs like.
"Make Me Say Please" , "From Bad to Worse", and the made-for-jukebox single, "
(She Called Me) Knucklehead".
Travis received 4 awards in 1999. Best Male Blues Artist, Best New Blues Artist,
Best Blues Entertainer and Contemporary Blues Artist Of The Year. In 1989 he
founded Haddix publishing Company and Wann-Sonn Records, and recorded ten
CDs under his own label. in 2007 travis won the Gay Rose Production Keeping the
Blues Alive Award.
Next time you have a chance, check out the movie April's Fool which features
Travis' hit song, Everything Is Everything.
In 2007, Travis' single, "Dick for Dinner" from "Mean Ole Yesterday" was nominated
Best Blues Song by the Blues Critic Awards 2007 Readers Poll-Comtemporary
Blues. Travis was in great company; the prize was awarded to Omar Kent Dykes &

Dynamic straight ahead jazz when NYC guitarist and Cleveland Native returns
for hometown gig.
“one of the finest straight-ahead jazz guitarists on the current NYC jazz scene.”
- Robert Silverstein, MWE3.com
From his fresh interpretations of jazz standards, to his lyrically evocative originals,
Brooklyn-based guitarist Rick Stone is an artist with a clear musical vision. His
fluid, full-bodied sound pays homage to the great jazz masters of the past while
maintaining a personal style with a contemporary edge.
Rick is a respected teacher at Jazzmobile, BCM, Hofstra and other. His trio
performs regularly at the Garage, the Bar Next Door and other NYC venues. In
2010 and 2011 he toured Italy extensively as a guest artist and clinician.
Rick’s latest CD Fractals (2011) features his working trio with bassist Marco
Panascia and drummer Tom Pollard. Says Tim Fischer in Just Jazz Guitar “Stone
comes across as a solid bebop guitarist, updating his harmonic and melodic
language to include the developments of the younger generation of New York
guitarists. Odd-time modifications to standards, wide-interval exercises, and exotic
modal intros are just a few of the more modern devices Stone explores throughout
the album.”
Rick Stone began playing guitar at age nine in his hometown of Cleveland. He
developed an early affinity for the blues, but it was in the mid-seventies that his
passion for jazz was sparked after hearing a live performance of saxophonist
Sonny Stitt. His musical quest led him to Berklee College of Music and then on to
New York where he found a fertile and stimulating environment in Barry Harris’
Jazz Cultural Theatre. While studying with the legendary pianist, Rick honed his
craft sitting in alongside veteran players like Tommy Flanagan, Lionel Hampton,
Clarence “C” Sharpe, and Junior Cook. Then, under the tutelage of jazz masters
Jimmy Heath, Ted Dunbar, Donald Byrd, Tony Purrone and Hal Galper, he earned
his M.A. at Queens College.
Soon Rick was developing a reputation in his own right, leading all-star groups with
musicians like Kenny Barron, Eric Alexander, Vernel Fournier, Richard Wyands,
Ralph Lalama, Dennis Irwin and Billy Hart in performances at Carnegie Hall’s Weill
Recital Hall, The Smithsonian Institution, The Blue Note and Birdland. His
recordings Blues For Nobody, Far East and Samba de Novembro have achieved
wide critical acclaim.

Chuck Loeb
Grammy nominated guitarist, composer, and producer, Chuck Loeb has had a
musical career that spans over four decades, and he is proud to be known as a
“renaissance man” in the music world. Over the four decades in his illustrious
career, Loeb has played and toured with a long list of jazz, pop, rock, and classical
greats: Fourplay, Hubert Laws, Chico Hamilton, Freddie Hubbard, Ray Barretto,
Gary Burton, Wayne Shorter and the aforementioned Stan Getz among many
others.
Harvey Mason
“Harvey Mason is probably the most recorded and most influential drummer
/percussionist in this genre.” proclaims Nathan East. ” I first became aware of him
in the days of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters and he had a patented beat that
every drummer learned. Harvey’s innovative, creative and a very musical
drummer. So, what you get with Harvey is very special.”
Tony Monaco

while playing arguably some of the hottest B-3 around. Mentored by the legendary

STANLEY JORDAN

Mack Avenue recording artist and Virtuoso Solo Guitarist back at Nighttown for
a great Friday night!
In a career that took flight with immediate commercial success and critical
acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic
musical persona of openness, imagination, versatility and maverick daring. Be it
bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through poprock hits, to blazing straight ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational
works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on
breathless journeys into the unexpected.
Key to Jordan’s fast-track acclaim was his mastery of a special technique on the
guitar’s fretboard. Instead of conventional strumming and picking, Jordan's
innovative "touch technique" is an advanced form of two-handed tapping. While a
handful of other players were using similar techniques, Stanley’s fluid, multilayered textures and sheer virtuosity raised the bar for excellence.
But his technique, though impressive, is always a means to a musical end. His
music is imbued with a warmth and sensitivity that has captured the imagination of
listeners worldwide. A classically trained pianist before playing guitar, Jordan
wanted greater freedom in voicing chords on his guitar, so he applied piano
principles to do so. Jordan's touch technique allows the guitarist to play melody
and chords simultaneously with an unprecedented level of independence. It also
allows Jordan to play simultaneously on two different guitars, or even on guitar and
piano. He says that “I think of it as a single instrument, but one with a wide range of
tonal colors—that’s why I do it.”
To date Jordan has performed in over 60 countries on 6 continents. He has
performed at many festivals, including the Kool Jazz Festival, the Concord Jazz
Festival, and the Montreaux International Jazz Festival. During the 1980s he
collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including performances with Art Blakey
and Richie Cole and recordings with Stanley Clarke and Kenny Rogers. T
Jordan has received four Grammy nominations. His most recent album "Friends"
was nominated for an NAACP Image Award.
Jordan came to prominence with the release of his 1985 album Magic Touch, a
revolutionary project that placed him at the forefront of re-launching legendary
Blue Note Records into a contemporary entity in jazz and beyond, as also
established the then-twenty-something Jordan as among the most distinctive and
refreshing new voices of the electric guitar.
In 2007 Jordan signed with Mack Avenue Records and released State of Nature in
2008 and Friends in 2011. For Friends, he invited musical guests including
guitarists Bucky Pizzarelli, Mike Stern, Russell Malone and Charlie Hunter; violinist
Regina Carter; saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Ronnie Laws; trumpeter Nicholas
Payton; bassists Christian McBride and Charnett Moffett; and drummer Kenwood
Dennard.
Jordan has maintained an extensive and consistent international touring schedule.
In between tour stops he is now at work on his next highly anticipated album from
Mack Avenue Records, for release next year.

Vocalist & Seven String Guitarist brings his World Class Quartet back to
Nighttown!
Featuring: John Pizzarelli-vocals and guitar, Martin Pizzarelli-acoustic bass,
Konrad Paszkudzki-piano, & Kevin Kanner-drums.
John Pizzarelli has cultivated a winning career by singing classic standards and
late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like
Nat "King" Cole and Frank Sinatra, and the songs of writers like Sammy Cahn and
Jimmy Van Heusen as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime revivalists of the
great American songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant
guitar playing.
Born on April 6, 1960, in Paterson, New Jersey, Pizzarelli has been playing guitar
since age six, following in the tradition of his father, guitar legend Bucky Pizzarelli.
Hanging out with his father, John was exposed to all the great jazz music of the era,
from Erroll Garner and Les Paul to Django Reinhardt. At 20, he began playing with
his father, then went out on his own. Since 1992, the John Pizzarelli Trio has toured
extensively. In 1993, they received the honor of opening tour dates for Frank
Sinatra and joined in the celebration for Sinatra's 80th birthday at Carnegie Hall.
John Pizzarelli's voice has continued to develop with time, displaying both charm
and humor. He has recorded as a leader for Chesky, Stash, Novus and RCA, and in
1997 appeared in Dream, a Broadway production of Johnny Mercer songs.
Along the way, Pizzarelli has earned rave reviews. "The John Pizzarelli Trio has
never been tighter, and Pizzarelli himself has never been looser," the Village Voice
said of a 1998 New York show. "We can say we're as lucky to listen to (Pizzarelli) as
Nat Cole fans were in the years before he became a legend." Pizzarelli was also
named "Jazz Vocalist of the Year" by Swing Journal in their 1999 Readers Poll.
Telarc records of Cleveland signed Pizzarelli at the end of 1999 and has had twelve
highly acclaimed and successful albums on the label to date.
Double ExposurePizzarelli’s latest album, Double Exposure, focuses on two distinct
styles to make a single fine recording. Set for release on May 15, 2012, Double
Exposure is a collection of tunes by some of the great pop songwriters of his own
generation that are framed squarely within traditional jazz arrangements.
Pizzarelli appears on several tracks on Paul McCartney’s 2012 album, Kisses on the
Bottom. He performed with Sir Paul at an iTunes concert at Capitol RecordsJohn
Pizzarelli2 Studios and the two also performed together at the GRAMMY® Awards
in Los Angeles.
In addition to being a bandleader and solo performer, John has been a special
guest on recordings for major pop names such as James Taylor, Natalie Cole,
Kristin Chenoweth, Tom Wopat, Rickie Lee Jones and Dave Von Ronk, as well as
leading jazz artists like Rosemary Clooney, Ruby Braff, Johnny Frigo, Buddy
DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, Bucky Pizzarelli. He was featured opposite
DeFranco, Harry Allen and, of course, Bucky Pizzarelli. He was featured opposite
Donna Summer, Jon Secada and Roberta Flack on the GRAMMY® Award-winning
CD, Songs From The Neighborhood: The Music of Mr. Rogers in 2005.
