CELEBRATE! What a grand Opening Day and 40th anniversary celebration we had on May
11. Thanks to all who joined in the festivities at the marina, the boat christenings, the
parade and the party at the Wreck Room. A special thanks to our Port Captain Wade
Crouch, who provided us with an exceptionally well-planned and coordinated event.
I want to express my appreciation to all of our volunteers who helped organize and stage
this year’s Opening Day. Planning an occasion for 150 people is no small undertaking but,
once again, our club has demonstrated exceptional planning and coordination skills to
throw a great party. THANKS!
Sue and I also want to express our thanks to Randy and Sandy Verrue, their son and daughter-in-law, Scott
and Diana and granddaughters Jacqui and Dani for their hospitality aboard Alexandra during the parade.
As you know, PLYC also conducted our first Open House of the year in conjunction with Opening Day. We
hosted a number of guests interested in membership in PLYC and received two new member applications
from couples who attended.
Sue and I also want to thank Harold and Sheila Brunstad for hosting the Past Commodores’ Breakfast at
their home on the morning of Opening Day. It was an honor to join Brad and Judy Newell, Bill Whitney, Jim
Brannaman, Peter and Jeanne Joseph, Roy and Jean Kraft, Kevin and Sue Ryan, David and Linda Aho and
Peggy and Gale Kulm. We are grateful for the contributions and leadership provided by these past commodores of our club.
Sue and I were honored to represent our club at Seattle Yacht Club’s Opening Day on May 4. We were fortunate to attend with David and Linda Aho (representing the US Coast Guard Auxiliary), who knew their
way around this big event. We watched the college hull racing team competitions and the boat parade
from Big Sky, an 87-foot Tolleycraft. Our thanks to SYC for inviting us to participate in their Opening Day.
They are wonderful hosts.
While our Opening Day festivities took much of our focus this month, I want to turn the page back to late
April and express our sincere appreciation to Rear Commodore Steve Hall and Kathy Kubesh, along with

their planning committee, for a superb Training Day on April 27. This year’s event was attended by over 80
folks who enjoyed an informative series of topics that will improve our knowledge and safety on the water.
Please consider volunteering for an available bartender, host or supervisor shift at the Wreck Room. The
summer months can be more challenging to staff with busy schedules and increased traffic at the Wreck
Room. We sincerely appreciate the willingness of our volunteers to help staff our facility so that we can
provide the kind of hospitality that we’re known for. Besides that, it’s lots of fun!
Make sure to stay up-to-date on all of the summer events which will be communicated via e-mail and on
the Web site. Registration for the June BBQ is open through June 3. The South Sound Shenanigans cruise
will be away from June 10-18. Our sailors have the Tala Point race and Jack & Jill race/cruise planned. Our
Women’s Group has a luncheon planned for June 27.
As you head out on the water for the summer boating season, please be safe and practice good seamanship.

The PLYC annual Training Day was held on April 27 with 82 members and guests in attendance. This year’s theme was “Cruising the Pacific Northwest.” The event began with a
smooth registration of attendees where all received a bag of boating related goodies, an
offering of coffee and a light breakfast, and a picturesque slide show of our beautiful PNW
cruising area which helped start the morning conversations until the formal start of the
presentations. With the help of our well-informed presenters, attendees survived the
‘cruise from hell’ and enjoyed an educational water safety demo all before lunch. After a
fill of soup, sandwiches, chips, and cookies while enjoying more pictures of the great PNW
attendees learned about all aspects of cruising from planning trips, charts, pre-departure
engine checks, docking, knot tying, and radio communications. This event was well received and could not
have happened without our presenters.
I would like to extend a very special thanks to all presenters who donated their time and talent so that our
club members and guests could learn more about safely cruising the beautiful PNW. The experiences and
knowledge of our PLYC member presenters including Peter Joseph, Kevin Ryan, David Aho, Joe Langjahr,
Peter Okonski and Terry Allen was augmented by our friends at the Northwest Maritime Center, Carolyn
“Ace” Spragg and Bill Dengler. Our keynote speaker, Jay Albrecht, from the National Weather Service office in Seattle, travelled that day to our area to make presentations in both Port Townsend and at our
Training Day at the Beach Club.
A special thanks to our resident sommelier, Wally Cathcart, and his ‘pouring staff’ for their assistance with
the wine portion of the Chart Challenge/Wine Tasting in the Harbormaster, which was a great way to end
our Training Day. Gift basket awards went to two members and one guest, Daniel Land - expert, Wayne
Houston - intermediate, and Billie Land - beginner. Prizes were presented by Chart Challenge creators/
judges, Kevin Ryan and David Aho.
Events such as Training Day are successful only because of the work of many people who work behind the
scenes to help plan, organize, decorate, set-up/take down, and make sure all the details are managed.
The list of those club members who helped make the 2013 Training Day successful is very long indeed. Lastly, recognition of the many sponsors who so graciously contributed service certificates and merchandise to
PLYC is also appropriate. Our thanks to:
Kori Ward, Port Ludlow Marina – canvas/aluminum tote
Goldstar Marine-service certificate
Port Townsend Honda-service certificate
SeaMarine-canvas tote bag filled with goodies
West Marine-marine binoculars
(Continued on page 3)
2
Port Ludlow Associates-hotel stay/golf certificate
Karen Best Homes-beer gift basket
A special thanks to John Weaver who donated 25 dozen roses! Some were sold and the remaining bouquets
were given away as door prizes. What an unexpected surprise gift from John!

Fleet Captain’s Column
by Olav Pedersen
Are you ready for Summer Solstice? That will be on June 21 with sunrise just after 5 a.m.
and sunset just after 9 p.m. If that’s the longest day, the June cruise from the 10th
through the 18th, should delight all boaters. Around 15 boats have already signed up for
this cruise and the marinas have established limits to the number of boats they can accommodate, so please contact Sheila Brunstad for further details on the “South Sound
Shenanigans” cruise and join us for what should be a wonderful adventure down south.
Please check out the PLYC Web site for more details and instructions.
May has been a busy month. Opening Day was a big success. The club entertained around
150 people, but I understand that future fleet captains will be requested to refrain from
dancing while hoisting the PLYC burgee. Thank goodness no one took any photos or videos. Denial is a great place to live!
Wade Crouch did a great job coordinating the Opening Day activities. As fleet captain, my responsibility
was to organize the boat parade, which I am pleased to say, proceeded without a hitch. The day was beautiful and the winds were relatively calm during the event. I would like to thank all participants – Blue Loon,
@Ease, Four Cs, the two Andiamos, Alley Cat, Trilogy, Queen B, Flying J, Duchess, Pau Hana, Dream Weaver, White Cap, Harmony and Gypsy – for participating and making the parade a safe and fun event for all.
Also, many thanks Randy and Sandra Verrue for providing Alexandra for the commodore and bagpiper to
address the parade. And let’s not forget the rest of the gang at the marina for pitching it to assist when
requested. Thanks Kori!
The month of May also included a short cruise to Kingston and Bremerton. Please read on for the highlights
of that trip.
Don’t forget to visit the Cruise Schedule section of our website at www.plyc.us on a regular basis and
check for updates.
Wreck Room Highlights
by Peggy Kulm, WR Events & Scheduling Coordinator
May was a terrific month with appetizers every Friday with the help of Judy Newell and
Jamie Bima. Build Your Own Sandwich was very popular and Opening Day amazed us all
with the biggest attendance yet, 160 members and guests, at the WR BBQ. Our first
“summer” Grillin’ on the Deck, and our May Birthday celebration was also well attended.
See the photos from many of these events in this edition.
June is bringing even more fun. Visiting yacht clubs and rendezvous will be in the marina
every weekend. Friday appetizers continue with special brisket sandwiches and chips by
Larry and Bugsy Carter on June 28. The much anticipated Salmon Bake and Honolulu BBQ
takes place on Saturday, June 8, courtesy of Teresa Forrest and her crew; the details are
in this issue. The May grill night was so popular that our commodore will be grill master for the membership on Saturday, June 22. Look for emails in June with more details.
As usual, I end with a request for volunteers. Our all-volunteer staff have made it possible to open the WR
every Friday and Saturday as well as for special events. Please consider volunteering your time this summer. It truly is fun and rewarding to be able to spend time with so many members as they stop by to visit.
Also, I could use some help with appetizers on Friday nights.
Please consider offering to prepare one for a Friday during
the summer. It need not be anything elaborate!
Pictured here are the PLYC birthday celebrants
for May, joined by guests from the Rob Rothe
rendezvous visiting the marina.

Sail Captain’s Column
by John Neesz
On May 4 Gypsy skippered by Jack Armes and Nor’wester by yours truly enjoyed spectacular sailing with clear skies, warm air and winds of 15 to 21 knots. The N and NW winds
made for fast reaching and running to Scatchet Head and a little beating followed by fast
close genoa reaching back. The tidal current followed us for most of the race helping
make this one of the fastest Scatchet Head races in years. The win went to Nor’wester.
Unfortunately our May 25 handicap race was abandoned for lack of wind and participants.
We are looking forward to our next fully crewed handicap race on June 15.
All of PLYC’s sailing couples are invited to our Jack & Jill Race-Cruise to Kingston on June
29 and return on June 30. We are planning a barbeque and potluck dinner in Kingston. Call me at 437-9605
to enter and choose your salad, side dish, or dessert assignment. Call the Port of Kingston at 360-297-3545
to reserve your slip.
As of May 23 our Etchells fleet of six active boats has enjoyed good to great sailing winds throughout the
month and completed three of the four Spring Series race days. The perennially winning keta team of Dan
Darrow, Dick Schneider, and Hank West had an untouchable lead in the series having won all seven completed races. Bananas, skippered by Ron Campo and Gringo skippered by Gary Rossow were separated by
only a point in the battle for second place with one day’s racing on May 30 remaining. We look forward to
the June-July Summer Series.

First of all, a huge thank you to everyone who attended a great opening day. The weather cooperated and we had a fun time. I especially want to thank Deanne Pederson and
Karen Hashagen for all their work to make the day such a success. And to all our other
volunteers – too many to list – thank you all so very much.
Now on to the next project at hand - the Watch Captain Program!
What is the Watch Captain Program? Through the summer months, Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, PLYC has traditionally provided a personal greeting to boating
visitors using our reciprocal moorage area on “A” dock. Each visiting boater is presented
with a packet of information about our community and club. This personal welcome is
done by PLYC volunteers. The visitors love this and PLYC receives letters every year from our visitors extending their thanks for making them feel so welcome. PLYC Watch Captain Program volunteers from past
years tell stories of making new friends, meeting very interesting people, and receiving invitations for
cocktails and even a steak dinner!
The Watch Captain Program need volunteers. For one week during the summer, any week you choose,
you will check with the marina staff every day, between 4 and 5 p.m., to see if there is a boat using the
reciprocal moorage. If there is, you will need to go to the marina store/office and pick up a prepared packet and deliver it to the boater moored in the reciprocal moorage. Since boaters are allowed two consecutive nights in the reciprocal, it is likely that some days of your week’s commitment will not require a trip
to the marina but the daily call to check for new boaters is important.
To volunteer, please call or email me: Wade Crouch, Port Captain, at 406-231-3956 or [email protected] .

The May Kitsap Kwik Kruise
by Jamie Bima
Six boats made an easy transit to Kingston enjoying one of our rare days of sunshine. The crews aboard
Alley Cat, Trilogy and XTSea risked sun burn before Pau Hana and Inspiration made it to the dock. After a
relaxing afternoon, cruisers and land cruisers Whipple and Luce, took over most of the bar area at the
Alehouse Restaurant for dinner. Bremerton marina provided our cruisers with very nice facilities and a
short walk to happy hour at Anthony’s on Friday. Later, we all managed to gather on Inspiration for after
dinner libations, chocolates and a fabulous cake created by Janet Barnes. She claimed to have
“practiced” on our group in anticipation of making the cake “for real” for another event. No problem!
The weather turned unpleasant on Saturday morning so after checking with the marina folks, we all decided to stay pleasantly tucked into Bremerton and take the foot ferry over to Port Orchard. Some of the
group watched the parade, others visited the farmer’s market, and most of us gathered for lunch at
Amy’s By the Sea in lieu of having dinner there. Dinner was a casual event split between hot dogs on Pau
Hana and pulled pork sliders on Inspiration. Sunday morning breakfast on the dock beside Pau Hana actually had some sunshine in addition to the toasted bagels, fruit, and the usual beverages.
The cruise may have been “Kwik,” but there was general agreement that it was a very pleasant and relaxing time.
New Members – Welcome Aboard!
Richard and Laura Lovas, a retired physician and R.N., relocated from Orlando, Florida. They’re currently renting a condo here and are looking for a home to buy in the area.
Richard and Laura’s main boating has been fishing near to shore, and in inlets, rivers, lakes and the Great
Lakes. They plan to enjoy the active lifestyle, natural beauty, and fishing the Northwest has to offer. They
have a Ranger/Bay Ranger 2180 power boat.
The Lovases have also found the people in Port Ludlow to be incredibly friendly and helpful. No surprise
there!
The Lovases were sponsored for membership by Buddy Hills and Brett Oemichen.
Doug and Cher Sharp still own a home in Aptos, CA in Santa Cruz County and recently purchased a home
in Paradise Bay where they intend to live for most of the year. Doug is a retired American Airlines pilot,
and Cher retired from teaching.
The Sharps have owned boats for over 35 years. They’ve taken extensive boating and navigation courses,
international navigation skills for aviation, and have 20 plus years of ocean fishing in Monterey Bay. They
currently own a 20-foot aluminum fishing boat, Felled Ox.
Doug and Cher have had a long-term interest in retiring in Washington, and love the natural beauty, wildlife, and marina environment the area has to offer.
The Sharps were sponsored for membership by Brett Oemichen and Judy Perrotta.
Ron Thomas and Kay Brownwood live in Windsor, CO, have a fifth-wheel in Palm Springs and a new home
in Teal Lake Village where they plan to spend five months or more a year. They have a son and his family
(two grandchildren) in Sequim and look forward to seeing them more often.
Ron and Kay’s boat, Andiamo, a 32-foot Bayliner, is moored in Port Ludlow Marina. Ron has 20 years’ experience boating in the ocean off the coast of Oregon and in Alaska. He’s also boated in lakes in Colorado
and Wyoming and crabbed and fished as well. Kay is a lifetime member of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club
experienced in sailing and racing off the coast there.
Ron and Kay were sponsored for membership by Marilynne Gates and Diane Wilcox.
Welcome aboard!

Yacht Club Women’s Group Spring Luncheon Event
by Beth Weaver
On April 29, a beautiful Monday, our Yacht Club Women’s Group enjoyed a day in Poulsbo. Ten of us tested
our creative talents at the Dancing Brush painting our choice of ceramic pieces. These works of art were
picked up the following week by Event Chair Kathleen Taylor, and delivered to the creators on Opening
Day.
While the pottery painting was going on, others of our group shopped the many fun and interesting stores
along the main street. At 12:30, 26 of us met for lunch at Sogno Di Vino, an Italian restaurant just down
the street from Dancing Brush. We enjoyed our choice of three delicious entrees and tiramisu for dessert.
Kudos to Kathleen and her committee: Judy Perotta, MollyTulley, Sue Oemichen, Sherry Robinson,
and Beth Crouch for this fun event.
Watch for notices about our summer event planned for the end of June.
