There is always a choice about the way you do your work, even if there is not a choice about the work itself. HOW DO YOU CHANGE YOUR ATTITUDE? Change your viewpoint Be a source of positive news Don’t let it rain on your parade Associate with POSITIVE People Awareness Check tone of voice Mirror to see face (are you smiling?) Feedback from co-worker or customer Become aware of tense muscles DECIDE TO CHANGE What difference would it make? CREATING POSITIVE MORALE Proper/positive feedback Keeping co-workers informed of events, plans, progress, etc. Showing appreciation every day Smiling That attitude thing CELEBRATE YOUR SUCCESSES Talk about the good things going on in your department. Talk about success with a difficult situation. Don’t dwell on the difficulty. (Remember that attitude thing!) ETHICS Ethics is the basic, moral ground rules by which we live our lives. Good ethics is learning what is right and Wrong and then doing the right thing. Work ethics is understanding what is right or wrong in the workplace and then doing what is right. A. COMMITMENT B. HONESTY AND INTEGRITY C. ATTENDANCE D. PUNCTUALITY E. DEPENDABILITY F. RESPONSIBILITY COMMITMENT Strong job commitment makes work far more satisfying. It’s therapeutic, too, an excellent antidote for stress. It also empowers you, bringing out your very best potential, and making you a more valuable employee. HONESTY AND INTEGRITY “When you have integrity, you have nothing to Fear because you have nothing to hide.” Zig Ziglar Three basic guidelines to working with integrity: Do what’s right. That means be on time, be polite, and be honest. Do your best. Mediocrity is unacceptable when you are capable of doing better. Treat others as they want to be treated. Practice love and understanding. Identify five benefits of honesty in the workplace. Basic rules of attendance: • Arrive on time-- a little early if possible • Return from lunch and break a few minutes early • Stay at work until your scheduled work day ends • Arrange ahead of time for absences, or contact your supervisor as soon as possible • Don’t have someone else call in for you Acceptable Reasons to Miss Work You are dead Someone in your immediate family dies Legal issues—jury duty, active reserves, jail You are in the hospital PUNCTUALITY What happens when you are not on time? DEPENDABILITY What if your rent or house payment amount changed every month? What if your babysitter was sometimes there and sometimes not? What if your newspaper was delivered on a random basis—whenever the delivery person felt like bringing it by the house? What if the grocery store sometimes had bread and sometimes didn’t?
