The Arc of Monmouth is a non-profit agency serving persons with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families since 1949 .
President’s Message
Roger Trendowski
It is with pride that I write my final President’s message
for The Turning Point. At our annual meeting on June 24
(which I hope you will attend), I conclude my two year
term as board president. Throughout my tenure, the recurring theme of this column has been “getting involved”,
and this final issue will be no different.
Many family and community members begin to get involved
as volunteers – whether it’s helping around the office (tech
work, mailings, etc…), helping to run a recreation program, or volunteering at a fundraiser like the annual Walk,
Golf Classic or Winter Glow Ball. Casual volunteers often
become active committee members of these events, taking an active role in budgets and planning. Our special
events would not be possible without the support of these
committees.
The opportunity to make a difference doesn’t stop there.
The Board of Directors is always looking for new applicants
who can bring a degree of expertise and experience, and
new board members are added at each year’s annual meeting. The Board of Directors provides insight and guidance
for major decisions at The Arc, and serves as the agency’s
fiscal steward.
Self Advocates Have
a Voice in Trenton
The New Jersey Self Advocacy Group (SAG) invited WOC
members to represent Monmouth County at the April 10
Budget Hearings in Trenton.
l to r: Maria Buckland, Eric
Krezel, Julie Trachenberg
and Mary Jane Torrez.
Recreation in California!
More details and photographs about their spectacular adventure can

Thank you for Stepping Up!
Nearly 600 attended the
April 12 Step Up for The
Arc Walk & 5k, helping to raise over $55,000. Thank you
to everyone who helped to make this event a success!
An active board is crucial to any non for profit, and I am
honored to have served as president for the past two years.
I will remain on the board and several committees at The
Arc and look forward to seeing you at future events.

I am very pleased to report that the Sandy-related repairs at the Work Opportunity Center are finally complete. The entire building was reopened in May
2014, allowing individuals and staff to access all work areas for the first time
since the storm hit in October 2012. The damage from the storm was extensive, and the road back slow, but now the center is better than ever. We are
tremendously grateful to all of the many persons and groups that contributed
funds to help in the recovery.
In more good news, our new residential program, Wayside Oaks, is now open.
Serving 16 persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in
their own apartments, this beautiful new building also provides affordable
housing for others, aged 55 and older. It is a wonderful home for The Arc residents, some of whom had lived for many years in large state institutions. We
look forward to providing all of The Arc’s Wayside Oaks residents a chance to
enjoy many of the activities that Monmouth County has to offer.
Algonquin Arts Theater in Manasquan welcomed guests of The Arc of Monmouth
and the New Jersey Coalition for Inclusive Education (NJCIE) on April 27 to
view two films. NJCIE premiered a film providing information on the transition from high school to adult life. The Arc of Monmouth showed a film made
by our Achievement Zone students and staff with funds from the N.J. Council
on Developmental Disabilities, and in collaboration with Ronan & Ronan Productions. The short film, called “Believe and You Can Achieve”, encourages
individuals with I/DD to seek jobs. If you want to view the film, you can find
it via our website (www.arcofmonmouth.org), or by searching for “The Arc of
Monmouth” on YouTube. I am certain you will find the individuals who are the
focus of the film inspiring.
The 65th Anniversary of The Arc of Monmouth will be celebrated at a dinner
dance at the Sheraton Eatontown on the evening of October 17. I hope you
will be able to join us for this celebration of 65 years of achievement by persons with I/DD with the support of their families and The Arc.
Board Spotlight: Tiffanie Eagan Salerno
In 2013, The Arc of Monmouth was pleased to welcome Tiffanie Eagan Salerno to its board. Raised in Monmouth County,
Tiffanie now resides in Atlantic Highlands with her husband,
Michael.
Tiffanie holds degrees from Fordham University and Widener
University’s School of Law. Licensed to practice law in New
Jersey and New York, her career began with NYC law firms, representing hedge
funds in their purchase of distressed commercial properties. In 2005, she moved
back to Monmouth County and founded her own Red Bank-based law firm, Eagan
& Associates, LLC, which specializes in residential and commercial real estate
transactions.
“I first learned of The Arc when they honored a very close friend of mine,” she
comments. “I was amazed at the wealth of services they provide and wanted to
help in any way that I could. I started out working with the Tuesday Group which
plans the annual Winter Glow Ball. When I was offered the opportunity to join
The Arc’s Board of Directors, I was honored to serve such an extraordinary charity that affords so many individuals the opportunity to live life to their fullest
potential and enjoy all that life has to offer.”
Tiffanie comes to the board with passion, expertise and warmth, and we are very
grateful to welcome her to this position.

DEVELOPMENT UPDATES
Gorgeous weather. Great food. Games, activities and of course, running and walking! These
elements helped to make this the most successful
Step Up for The Arc Walk & 5k in its 16 year history.
Over 500 runners, walkers and volunteers attended the event, which began and ended at Asbury
Park’s legendary Stone Pony. Due to a great team
of volunteers, registration lines were always short, and the entire day ran like clockwork.
So many new registrants showed up that we ran out of t-shirts! We’ve got plans to resolve
this next year, and ideas on how to make this event filled with even more excitement!
Activities included a 4-D video game trailer, a Microsoft/X-Box
Tent, carnival games and unlimited free pinball at the Silver
Ball Arcade. DJ Nicky kept the air filled
with music outdoors, while the WTF Band
rocked the Stone Pony’s inside stage with
some classic rock covers. The Arc was
very proud to feature this band, as guitarist Vance Zalepka has been very involved
with The Arc for many years. In fact,
you can see Vance, his wife Lauren and
daughter Dani on the cover of our 2013
Annual Report!
In the months leading up to April 12,
many participants took their involvement to the highest level
by starting online fundraising pages. We thank everyone who
took the initiative to fundraise on our behalf! Through online fundraising, sponsorships and
the sale of yellow pennants, this event raised over $55,000 for people with intellectual and
developmental disabilities. Best of all, because expenses are kept extremely low, nearly
every dollar goes straight to support the programs and people who need it most.

Wine Tasting
On Thursday, May 15, a new wine tasting
event was held at the breathtaking “Chateau
de Palmeri” – a private estate on the Navesink
River.
Over 150 guests sampled wines from 90+
Cellars, a new label that offers highly rated
wines at a fraction of its original cost. Caterer Pat Conte presented lavish stations and
passed hors d’oeuvres, which served as a perfect pairing with the wines.

News from the Work Opportunity Center (WOC)
Long Branch History Depicted Through the Talents of Individuals with I/DD
by Elaine Richardson, Marketing and Sales Manager
In April, artists from WOC displayed their work at the Long
Branch Public Library, in an exhibit entitled “How I See Long
Branch”.
Leading up to the event, staff and volunteers drove WOC’s talented individuals to various historic sites in Long Branch and
helped them to research landmarks in the library’s Local History Room. In total, 20 artists created 30 pieces for the exhibit.
“WOC, which primarily provides contract labor at its Long Branch workshop, has been so grateful to foster the creative
sides of the individuals we serve,” explains Linda Porter, Director of Vocational Services at The Arc of Monmouth. “Not
only are these pieces visually stimulating, but individuals have been earning money by selling their artwork and crafts.”
The artwork is now on display at WOC and available for purchase. To arrange a
viewing, please contact (732) 229-4414.
Special thanks to the Investor’s Bank Foundation and the Monmouth County Arts
Council - the funders who made WOC’s art initiative possible.
WOC Artist Selected for Rain Barrel Project
by Heather Warner, Vocational Counselor
A rain barrel is a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof - water
that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams.
The water is stored in the barrel and used at a later time for activities such as
watering the garden or washing cars.
The New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium recently held a contest designed to teach
people about the advantages of recycling water. Artists throughout New Jersey
submitted samples of how they might decorate a rain barrel, which would then
be seen by summer tourists. Following the moving exhibit, the barrels will be
auctioned off in the autumn.
Dennis Plummer, a talented WOC trainee,
was one of the 10 artists chosen to take
part in the project. Beaming with pride,
he got right to work by informing the WOC
staff of the specific paints he needed in order to bring the plain black barrel to life. Production Coach Cathy Catalano was
of great assistance in making sure Dennis had what he needed.
Dennis chose “Asbury Park” as his theme, and the barrel consists of Asbury’s famous Tillie on one side, and a huge sunshine on the other. Many familiar words
relating to Asbury Park were posted all around the barrel in Dennis’ signature
lettering.
Stay tuned and log on to www.njtoptenbeaches.org for more details about
what’s to come. Next time it rains, think about how much water you could be
collecting in a rain barrel.
Does your company need contract labor? WOC can assist you with a wide variety of production
needs, from assembly, packaging, re-work, mailing and more at competitive prices. Contact Elaine
Richardson, Marketing and Sales Manager at (732) 229-4414 or [email protected].

Freehold Employment Services in New Location
by Thea Strong, Director of Employment Services
In advance of a more permanent move within Freehold Raceway Mall, the Department of Employment Services, the Drop off Center and the Red Horse Art
Gallery are now located in a temporary space near Macy’s Second Floor.
Team spirit was evident as the mall’s back hallways bustled with rolling carts
full of desks, files, supplies and artwork. Thank you to the many staff members for their help, and to participants and their families for adapting to the
changes presented by this move.
In approximately four months, Employment Services will make its final move
within the mall’s “Macy’s Wing”, to a larger space shared with other non-profit
organizations (including Meridian Health and the United Way of Monmouth
County).
We thank everyone who helped with this relocation and are looking forward to
the partnerships that our next move will offer.
Staff and participants of the Drop off
Center, who helped to furnish their
new location and successfully learned
how to find us in the “Macy’s Wing”.
Residential Licensing
by Dawn Delaney, Director of Residential Services
The Residential Department’s State Licensing Inspection is in full swing! As of the time of this writing, nine programs
out of thirteen have been inspected and the results have been very positive. The remaining programs are also expected to pass their inspections within the next month. Four different inspectors have conducted site visits, and all
have been complimentary of our homes and staff.
It is evident that the residential staff is very caring and conscientious, and work very hard throughout the year to
maintain our programs. Thank you to everyone who helps to improve the lives of the residents and continues to keep
The Arc of Monmouth a terrific place to work and live!
Recreation
by Cindy Wiegers, Director of Recreation
The Recreation Department got away from a rainy spring by spending 10 days in sunny Southern California. Tours included Disneyland, Hollywood Boulevard, a Pirate Adventure Dinner and poolside
relaxation at some fabulous rental homes. A chance to cheer on
the Yankees at the Anaheim Angels’ new stadium made this trip
very special.
To get involved in future trips and other recreation activities,
call (732) 493-0225 or email [email protected].

Algonquin Arts Theatre Partners with The Arc for Red Carpet Film Premiere
by Sarah Logan, Director of Individual and Family Supports
Over 100 guests attended
the red carpet premiere
of “Believe and You Can
Achieve”, The Arc of Monmouth’s new film about
the importance of employment for people with
developmental disabilities. The film is the result of a year-long project
by The Arc’s Achievement
Zone, and was funded
through a grant from the NJ Council on Developmental Disabilities and support from The Arc of NJ.
The event also included a brief film from the NJ Coalition for Inclusive Education, which helped to give a complete picture of the transition to adult life for
young people with developmental disabilities.
“We wanted to give the film’s stars and crew a memorable experience”, says
Candice Layton, Director of The Achievement Zone. “Our vision was a Hollywood-style premiere, complete with red carpet, paparazzi and flowers for each
participant. The Algonquin Theatre helped
to make this a reality by donating
their beautiful theatre and making sure the entire event ran like
clockwork.”
The Arc thanks The Algonquin Theatre and everyone involved in this
event and the creation of the film.
The complete film is now available for viewing at
www.arcofmonmouth.org.
Adult Services
The Arc’s Achievement Centers are working hard to develop self-sustaining enterprises that
benefit the programs and the individuals they serve. One new project is the Eatontown
Craft Boutique, which is gaining popularity for its hand painted glassware, tea sets, vases
and pillows. The work created by program participants is truly beautiful – in fact, one set
of martini glasses sold for over $100 at the
last Winter Glow Ball!
Proceeds from the sale of these items are
evenly split between the participant who
created the sold piece and a special replenishment fund – so that additional supplies
can be purchased to create more of these
beautiful pieces.
Shopping can be done at the Centers at Eatontown (20 Meridian Road)
8:30-3:30, but it is recommended that you call ahead – (732) 389-2525. A
limited selection of items is also for sale at The Arc Center
(1158 Wayside Road, Tinton Falls).

Holmdel Siblings Advocate During Autism Awareness Month
by Brett Colby, Director of Development
April was Autism Awareness Month, and one 7th grader and her brother marked the occasion in a very special way.
Catherine Vucetic, 13, is a student at the Ranney School in Tinton Falls.
Catherine is fast becoming a vocal advocate for her brother, Alex, 22.
In April of 2013, Catherine commemorated Autism Awareness Month with
a presentation about Alex to her 6th grade class. The goal of her speech
was to show students that Alex is no different than them, and the response
from students and teachers was tremendous.
This year, the school invited Catherine to make a similar presentation about Autism to the entire
middle school, grades 6-8.
Catherine and Alex care a great deal for one another. They trade glances
and smirks in that special way unique to siblings, which shows that they
understand each other without having to speak. Their hobbies even mirror one another – they both love to swim, and both play instruments – Alex
drums, Catherine double bass.
Alex is an excellent golfer, and plays on The Arc of Monmouth’s Recreation golf team. His game was so impressive,
in fact, that he was invited to play at The Arc’s 2013 Golf Classic at Deal Golf and Country Club. On June 16, 2014,
Alex and his parents will return to Deal for this year’s Golf Classic www.arcofmonmouth.org/golf.
The siblings live in Holmdel with their supportive parents, who encourage their love of theatre, music and electronics – the latter probably fostered by their father, whom they describe as a tech-guru. When Catherine has trouble
with her iPod, Alex helps her, and when Alex runs into computer difficulty, he turns to Catherine for guidance.
“Don’t be quick to judge – be welcoming and kind” Catherine advises when meeting someone with autism. “Treat
people with autism like you would treat anyone – because they are no different than the rest of us.”
The Arc of Monmouth applauds Catherine and Alex for being themselves – and helping to raise awareness during
this important month.
Congratulations to our
Recent College Graduates!
Health Services: Nurses Day
by Kristin Creed, Director of Health Services
While Nurses Day is officially celebrated on May 7, the nurses of
The Arc’s Health Services deserve to be celebrated every day of
the year. Their dedication to providing the best, most comprehensive and coordinated health care to every individual served
by the department drives the quality work that they do every
day.
On Wednesday, May 21, 2014, the Keep Achieving
(Kach) at Brookdale program graduated their second class. Samantha K., Thomas O., Gregory R.,
Christopher S., Zachary S., Jared W. and Tyshon W.
all completed their three years, and will be moving
on to many exciting new ventures. Thomas led the
audience in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Samantha and Christopher sang the National Anthem
and both Zachary and Tyshon delivered very moving speeches. We are thrilled with the success of
this program, and looking forward to some exciting
changes in the next academic year.
The duties that they perform in the public eye are only a fraction
of the tasks that they get done on any given work day. Our nursing staff ensures that everyone’s healthcare needs are well taken
care of, whether greeting
a patient with warmth and
compassion, making sure
that their medication is in
order, or keeping prescriptions in accordance with
state standards.
