on Monday, June 6, as they
anxiously awaited the start of
Field Day events.
Students moved from station to

Students also planted
several evergreen seedlings
along the school property
line that afternoon.
Mother Nature cooperated and
provided a extremely warm, but beautiful
afternoon. Upon conclusion of the day’s
activities the students were
treated to popsicles to help
them cool off.
Great job, once again, to Mr. Crawford
for organizing this year’s Field Day, and
to all the parents and staff members who
helped make this day a great success.
Special thanks to Mrs. Lori Allen,
Ms. Linda Bradley, Mrs. Kelly Bronkema,
Mrs. Paula Brown, Mrs. Julia Diaco,
Mr. Scott Gipson, Miss Lindsay Harroff,
Ms. Lisa Kissell, Mrs. Tonya Krah,
Mrs. Julie Nunan, and Mrs. Shelley
Wimberley who ran the individual events.

Ambassadors sponsored “Be a Friend” week in May. Linda Kozlowski taught a Social
Responsibility Skills lesson for fourth graders entitled “Brush Up on Respect”, the Middle
School Student Climate Committee facilitated a Middle School transition lesson for fifth
graders, and the student ambassadors presented skits highlighting peer mediation and the use
of positive bystander skills. The highlight of the week was a “Mix It Up” lunch. Students were
challenged to step out of their comfort zones and sit with someone new.
Ambassadors enjoyed an appreciation breakfast on June 1. During the school year, these
school leaders welcomed new students to the Intermediate School and enjoyed opportunities
to participate in their school community as role models and asset builders. The Intermediate
School community appreciates the work of these school community leaders.
Linda Kozlowski can be reached at 663-1063, extension 4331.
Asset Building Block #14: Positive Adult Role Models
Affirmations for people who want to be a positive role model in the lives of young people:
 I will model the kind of behavior that I expect from young people.
 I will work toward being a young person’s best role model.
 I will keep my promises to young people.
 I will share stories about successful people with young people.
 I will model the importance of reading by making time to read the newspaper,
magazines, books, or other materials and will encourage young people to read with me.
 I will teach young people to be honest, caring, and responsible by being honest, caring,
and responsible myself.
 I will model integrity by standing up for what I believe in - even when it’s not the popular
thing to do.
 I will teach young people to respect all cultures by making an effort to get to know people
from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
 I will have high expectations of myself and will continue to work to improve my personal
and professional life.
Remember: young people will usually do what they see us doing
and not necessarily what we ask them to do.

Congratulations to fourth graders, Brooke Allen and
Cayla Stout whose drawings were chosen as winners
of the Cass County Courthouse book contest. While
Brooke s drawing illustrated a section inside the book,
Cayla s picture was chosen for the cover. The girls were
recognized during an award ceremony at the old Cass
County Courthouse building in April. Thank you to
Ms. Velthouse for submitting their entries in the contest.
Chey Wilfert Named
Edwardsburg’s Recognized Young Author
at SMC’s Young Authors’ Day
Chey Wilfert, 5th grade student in Mrs. Deb Williams’ multiage class, was honored for
her winning book at Young Writers’ Day at Southwestern Michigan College on May 17.
Chey wrote and illustrated her book, Night of Mist, in Mrs. Stock’s
writing enrichment class. Fifty-four Intermediate students in
Mrs. Stock’s enrichment classes participated in Young Writers’ Day.
Students enjoyed seeing their books on display along with student
books from Dowagiac, Cassopolis, and Marcellus. Highlights of the
day were presentations by author Margaret Willey, author/illustrator
Amy Young, and the Magic Carpet Theater who dramatized popular
picture books with audience participation. Chey’s book (and the
winning books from Cassopolis, Dowagiac, and Marcellus) was read
aloud by the Magic Carpet Theater actors with audience interaction
during the final presentation of the day.
