SCIENCE OLYMPIAD
This year’s county-wide Math-A-Rama
competition was held Thursday, March 8, at Southwestern
Michigan College in Dowagiac. Twenty fourth and 20 fifth
grade students were chosen to represent Edwardsburg
Intermediate School at this day full of mathematical
challenges. The 40 students participated in activities
involving problem solving, calculators, estimation,
geometry, and a scavenger hunt. Mrs. Lisa Jacobson and
Mrs. Martha Lange accompanied the children on their trip
and also instructed some of the day's events. Many parents
volunteered their time to chaperone this mathematical day
of fun. Participants are pictured and listed below:
On Tuesday, March 6, the 32 Intermediate
students listed below traveled to Southwestern
Michigan College in Dowagiac for the annual
county-wide Science Olympiad. Students
practiced for this day and were well prepared for
the events. Some events included Rollercoasters,
Electricity, Electromagnets, and Air Junk. They
also were able to see a presentation about animals
given by staff members from the Surret Nature
Center.
Students were awarded 1st - 5th place ribbons
and a certificate of recognition for participating
in the Science Olympiad competition. Special
thanks to Mrs. Kelly Sutton and Mrs. Cindy
Vernon for sponsoring the Science Olympiad.

Fifth graders from Mrs. Lange and Mr. Schaible’s
classes presented a wax museum of their favorite
historical events on Tuesday, March 27. The students
researched their event and dressed to fit the part,
complete with props. Sitting still and silent, they waited
for a visitor to pass by and push their “button.” This
prompted them to begin reciting a 30-second speech
about their historical event. Students put many hours
of hard work into this, making it a huge success!
On Saturday, March 3, 1st - 5th graders from Edwardsburg Schools held their 21st annual American
Heart Association "Jump Rope For Heart" Jump-A-Thon. As in the past, it was a huge success with
around 100 jumpers raising over $6,800 for the American Heart Association. All the kids worked very
hard during their two hours of jumping rope, and their efforts earned $600 worth of physical education
equipment for our schools. Not only did everyone who participated get exercise and help maintain a strong
heart, but they also helped the American Heart Association with funding for future research. Many thanks
to the participants and the volunteers who helped make this year's Jump-A-Thon another success, as well as
to Mrs. Breslin and Mrs. Kozlowski for helping with the health fair. Mrs. Cleveland and Mr. Crawford will
continue to host this annual event to promote physical fitness and wellness in the school and at home.

Coaches Harroff and Sevison were
very excited about the fantastic turnout
for Girls' Intramural Volleyball this year! Seventy
fourth and fifth grade girls participated after school
for four weeks during the month of March. The main
focus of each practice was teaching basic passing,
setting, and serving skills. The girls also scrimmaged
against each other.
Boys' Intramural Basketball
The Boys' Intramural Basketball program was
a great success this winter with 48 fourth and
fifth graders participating. Mrs. Marcia Harroff
and Mr. Jim Cebra taught the basics of shooting,
passing, and dribbling, along with providing
game experience to prepare these future Eddies!
Intramural Wrestling
Thank you to Coaches Jim Cebra and
Pat Disher for coaching the 18 fourth
and fifth grade boys who participated in
this year's Intramural Wrestling season.

SCIENCE FAIR
About 45 fourth and fifth graders participated in this
year’s science fair held at Edwardsburg Intermediate on
February 23.
Students investigated a question or problem and
were evaluated on the following: the scientific method
process, creative effort, level of completion, and their
displays. Participants were able to earn a first, second,
or third place ribbon, in conjunction with a participation
certificate.
There were a variety of project topics ranging from
“The Root Beer Standoff,” “Does Camouflage Affect
Animal Survival,” “Which Brand of Popcorn Pops the
Most,” and “Does Caffeine Make Plants Grow Better?”
THANK YOU!
Your efforts in collecting
General Mills Boxtops for
Education paid off!
Edwardsburg Intermediate
earned $1,310.50 this year!
Do you have extra sports balls at home that your kids aren’t using?
If so, Edwardsburg Intermediate School would accept donations of
gently used basketballs, footballs, rubber playground balls, and
soccer balls for our students to play with during recess.
Fabulous Fun on Wheels
Mrs. Jacobson, Mrs. Watts,
and Mrs. White would like to
thank the 125 Intermediate
students who joined them in
this year’s Rollerskating Club
as they enjoyed five fantastic
Tuesday afternoons of skating,
games, and their favorite - the
food! The owners at Skate-ARama in Niles complimented
our kids on their good manners
and excellent behavior.
Students participating in this
club found it was a lot more
than just skating and eating.
Not only were they able to
rollerskate and rollerblade, but
they also had an opportunity
to play 4-corners, limbo, air
hockey, and plenty of video
games. Thank you to the staff
at Skate-A-Rama who was
very accommodating to our
students!
Our annual Ping Pong Tournament was held at lunch throughout the
month of February. Winners from each lunch period are pictured below.

ALL ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL
Jennifer Ervin and seventh grade Student Climate Committee members Elizabeth Neuerberg,
Sam Beck, Jacob Campbell, Jacob Kanaby, Lucas Weise, Ryan Zakrewski, Jena Berlin, Kaity
Kendall, Shania Ahmed, Vivian McClellan, Katie Wimberly, Keller Mecklenberg, Clay Sidenbender,
and Joelle Eaves facilitated a presentation all about middle school. Fifth grade students enjoyed the
presentation, and an informal poll of a few fifth graders would indicate that the presentation helped
reduce their stress level related to the transition to middle school next year.
BRUSH UP ON RESPECT AND ACT
Linda Kozlowski, Behavioral Services Coordinator, met with fourth grade students to facilitate a
“Brush Up on Respect” activity that visually demonstrated the power of words and that what comes
out of our mouth matters.
In addition students practiced “ACT,” a three step strategy to use when something is brothering them:
Acknowledge to yourself how you are feeling.
Calm down so you can think calmly about what you want to do.
Talk with the person about how you feel and what you want (using an I-message).
There are green posters around school to remind students to use ACT along with their social
responsibility skills.
ASSET BUILDING BLOCK #35 ~ Share this building block with your child!
Resistance Skills: Youth can resist negative peer pressure and avoid dangerous situations.
LISTEN TO YOUR STUDENT
Brainstorm and practice possible assertive statements that can help your youth combat negative
peer pressure. Sometimes it takes adult guidance to help with such a big plan, but the power of
the peer group for positive change is a major force. Remember, if youth stand up for what they
know is right, they’ll never regret it. The effects of negative peer pressure can be prevented by
teaching our youth to be confident and comfortable with who they are. (Uttara 2011.)
