As in the past, it was a huge success with around 100 jumpers raising over $9,300 for the American Heart Association. All the kids worked very hard during their two hours of jumping rope, and their efforts earned $600 worth of physical education equipment for our schools. Not only did everyone get exercise and help maintain a strong heart, but they also helped the American Heart Association with funding for future research. Physical Education teachers, Mrs. Cleveland and Mr. Crawford, host this annual event to promote physical fitness and wellness in the school and at home. Bump-Set-Spike-Score! Coaches Hepler and Sevison were very excited about the fantastic turnout for Girls' Intramural Volleyball this year! Sixty fourth and fifth grade girls participated after school for four weeks during the month of March. The main focus of each practice was teaching basic passing, setting, and serving skills. The girls also scrimmaged against each other. This year’s county-wide Math-A-Rama competition was held Friday, March 11, at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac. Forty students were chosen to represent Edwardsburg Intermediate School at this day full of mathematical challenges. While there, students participated in activities involving problem solving, calculators, estimation, geometry, and a scavenger hunt. Mrs. Lisa Jacobson and Mrs. Jessica Harley accompanied the children on their trip and also instructed some of the day's events. Many parents also volunteered their time to chaperone this mathematical day of fun. Participants are pictured and listed below: Boys' Intramural Basketball The Boys' Intramural Basketball program was a great success this winter with 65 fourth and fifth graders participating. Mr. Jason Cook and Mr. Brian Schaible taught the basics of shooting, passing, and dribbling, along with providing game experience to prepare these future Eddies! Students investigated a question or problem and were evaluated on each of the following: the scientific method process, creative effort, level of completion, and their displays. Participants were able to earn a first, second, or third place ribbon, in conjunction with a participation certificate. There were a variety of project topics ranging from “Which Microwave Popcorn Pops Fastest,” “How Much Iron is in Cereal,” and “Which Color Crayon Melts the Fastest?” ~ ATTENTION 4TH GRADERS ~ Are you interested in being a part of the 5th grade band next year? Then mark your calendars for the following important dates: May 19: 4th Grade Instrument Fittings @ Intermediate Representatives from Quinlan & Fabish will have 4th grade students test various instruments to determine the one(s) with which they are best suited. Fittings will take place during the school day. Shorts, skirts, long shirts, and dresses may be worn over leggings as long as they are of appropriate length; leggings may not be worn alone. Field Day Volunteers Needed We are in need of volunteers for this year’s Field Day activities that will be held on Monday, June 6, 2016. (The rain date will be Wednesday, June 8.) If you are available to help, please call the office and leave a message for Mr. Crawford. He will contact you closer to the event with more information. Do you have extra sports balls at home that your kids aren’t using? If so, Edwardsburg Intermediate School would appreciate donations of gently used basketballs, footballs, rubber playground balls, and soccer balls for our students to play with during recess. Transportation Information Just a reminder that students must ride their assigned bus to and from school and may not switch routes unless parents have made prior arrangements with the Edwardsburg Schools Transportation Department. Temporary bus changes will only be approved for emergency situations. If a need arises for you to have your child picked up or dropped off at a different stop than normal, please call either 663-1041 or 663-2900. Three Reasons Attendance is Still Important Summer vacation is on the horizon. But it’s not here yet. Here are three reasons to make sure your child comes to school on time every day: Learning hasn’t stopped. Teachers are still planning lessons and teaching new content. Kids who aren’t in school won’t learn this information. Students who miss just 10% of the school year in the early grades are still behind their peers when they reach high school. Teachers often plan group projects for the end of the year. These projects help students learn cooperation, problem solving and responsibility. These are skills they’ll eventually need in the workplace. If your child isn’t in class, she won’t benefit from these lessons. Regular attendance teaches kids to be dependable—which is an important quality for everyone to develop. Fabulous Fun on Wheels Mrs. Brandt, Mrs. Mumma, and Mrs. White want to thank the 145 Intermediate students who joined them for this year’s Rollerskating Club. They enjoyed five fantastic Tuesday afternoons of skating, games, and their favorite - the food! Students were not only able to rollerskate and rollerblade, but they also had an opportunity to play 4-corners, limbo, air hockey, and plenty of video games. Thank you to the staff at the skating rink who, as always, were very accommodating to our students! The Skate-A-Rama owners were complimentary of our kids’ good manners and excellent behavior. Thank you for making EIS proud! The Intermediate School Ambassadors organized a kindness project. During the second semester, students are invited to notice acts of kindness performed by fellow students. They have been asked to write a brief description of the act of kindness witnessed including the person’s name that performed the act. The Ambassadors are then displaying these descriptions of respectful acts on the “Kindness/Respect wall.” The students are encouraged to be aware of acts of kindness throughout the day. The project will continue through May. KINDNESS PROJECT Linda Kozlowski, Behavioral Services Coordinator, can be found in the Counselor Corner at the Intermediate School and can be reached by calling 663-1063, extension 4331.
