A Second Decade of Service
lifeStyle providence APRIL EDITION | 2010 T H E 1 9 7 0 s A Second Decade of Service Celebrating our 50th anniversary of ministry this year has given us the opportunity to leaf through our archives, poring over sepia-toned photographs and purpled mimeograph pages. What comes to light, over and over again, is a spirit of adventure and problem-solving. That spirit helped launch this ministry in the first place, as described in Issue 1 of this special newsletter series, which focused on our first decade of ministry, the 1960s. (If you did not receive that issue, you can view it Mrs. Birdie Snyder, RN, was a beloved member of the nursing staff at Providence of Palos Heights during the 1970s. During her tenure, the facility nearly doubled in capacity, from 100 patients served to 196. online at www.providencememories.com.) In the early 1970s, America was rocked by the oil embargo of 1973. Our country’s demand for energy was swelling, and international pressures limited supplies. Long lines and rationing caused hardships and a shift in the way our nation thought about energy and oil. During this same decade, Providence also recognized a shortage — a shortage of room to care for all the seniors who needed the services we could provide. To address these expanding needs, we chose to expand rather than limit our vision. The 1970s marked not only an expansion continue Celebrating 50 Years of Ministry The timeline running throughout this newsletter highlights events from our second decade of ministry, the 1970s. In fact, we’re devoting each newsletter this year to a single decade, so look for the 1980s in the next issue! Throughout this anniversary year, we’re trying to create a sense of community and celebration. Will you join us by sharing your ministry memories? Visit “Rest Haven Memories” on Facebook, and you’ll be able to share your stories, comment on photos, or even add your own images and recollections. More than 1,000 people gathered to support this ministry at the tenth-anniversary Torchlight. We broke ground in 1971 for a larger Holland Home retirement community. We broke ground again in 1975 to open Rest Haven South in South Holland, Illinois. Both of these new enterprises were completely full — with a waiting list — from the day they opened. In fact, there was also a waiting list of people who wanted to work at Rest Haven or Holland Home, indicating the earnest interest in personal involvement with this kind of ministry. Archived copies of the Rest Haven News from the 1970s include countless stories of people giving Even today, we see that same responsiveness among God’s people, that same passion for a compelling vision, that same giving from grateful hearts. generously — sometimes because they had caught the vision of what this new ministry could be, other times because they had personally experienced care for a family In so many ways, the ministry of member and wanted Rest Haven has always been a community effort. As you view the timeline of images and captions throughout this newsletter, praise God for His providence. He has shown Himself faithful throughout our history, raising up new people, new ideas, new technologies, new opportunities, and new resources all along the way — always at just the right time, in just the right way. And if you sense Him raising you up to help meet today’s needs, you’ll find a giving envelope included with this mailing! = 1971 Church and community members gather for the groundbreaking for the new Holland Home in South Holland, Illinois, which would double the number of people to whom we could offer retirement living. 1972 Throughout the second decade of ministry, the Women’s Auxiliaries continued to host luncheons and raise funds. (Right: original hand-made program from a 1972 luncheon.) ....celebrating fifty l i f e S t y l e A History of Working Together In a 1970 issue of the Rest Haven News, Administrator Rich Mulder wrote, “During this past decade, our Rest Haven Rich Mulder reviews early Home, with a small plans for the new Holland Home to be constructed in beginning of 50 beds, South Holland, Illinois. has quadrupled and still carries a waiting list. Our Holland Home (in Roseland), with a capacity of 130 beds also carries a waiting list. We are standing right in the middle of an exploding senior citizen population. Is there something that we as a church should be doing about it? Do we have a responsibility? Do we have the resources? If we have the resources, can we get hold of them, funnel them, direct them?” He continued by answering the question, “Your combined Rest Haven and Holland Home Board say, ‘Yes.’ Therefore, preliminaries are now being drawn for a six-story unit with a capacity of 300 beds.” But perhaps most interesting is the closing paragraph of Mr. Mulder’s article: “This is another herculean task, and we need you. In Proverbs we read, ‘In the multitude of counselors there is wisdom.’ Will you share with us your comments, your prayers, your enthusiasm?” Mr. Mulder’s 1970 article captures the spirit that has always been part of our ministry culture. Recognizing a need, we set about meeting it — in community with fellow Christians, and in harmony with God’s leading. The response at that time was dramatic. Our archives reveal generous gifts of cash, checks, bequests, and land, as well as enthusiastic participation in bake sales, Fall Festivals, and Torchlight dinners. In a January 1972 newsletter, Mr. Mulder reported, “Because of your continued faithfulness and warm generosity, hope is perpetuated. Gifts received through Wills, Memorials, Churches, Auxiliary, continue 1970s Postcard for Rest Haven Central shows the efficient nursing staff and modern decor of a facility “sponsored by the Christian Reformed and Reformed Churches of Chicagoland.” y e a r s o f m i n i s t r y. . . . p r o v i d e n c e A History of Working Together, continued Torchlight, and general mailings have made it possible for us to continue with needed expansion and meet our debt retirement schedule.” By early 1973, the new Holland Home was not only constructed, it was full. Today this ministry we share continues to rely on that spirit of harmony and community. And we continue to believe that the response will be no less dramatic. Because we know that the Providence family is committed to providing Christian care for generations to come. When your parents need help today (or tomorrow), Providence will be there. And when your children need to provide care for you, we want to make sure Providence is there then too. So we continue to offer the same variety of convenient partnership options, and we continue to welcome any other creative gifts the Providence family comes up with! 1972 Holland Home construction begins. Consider these forms of giving, which can bless both giver and receiver, now and in the future: = Simple bequests: designate a gift in your will and bless others for years to come = Charitable trusts: choose a charitable, nonprofit ministry as a beneficiary = Gift annuities: enter an annuity agreement with Provi- dence, and a fixed annuity will be paid to you, or whomever you choose, each year for as long as you live. = Major designated gifts: cash, real estate, stocks, insurance, 401(k), and securities can all be a blessing to people who need your help Fifty years ago, churches and Christians who joined the cause did not realize their financial contributions would ignite five decades of innovative service. And it’s just as hard to predict what your contributions today might achieve. But the future of this ministry begins today, and now is a new opportunity to step into the story of Providence. Rich Mulder, who toured existing nursing homes in the 1950s, responded by saying, “Our people deserve better than this!” Out of that vision, a ministry was born, the first licensed Christian nursing home in the Chicago area. That unwillingness to settle for “good enough,” that commitment to excellence and innovation, that Godly belief that “people deserve better” — all continue to drive our ministry decisions. And fueled by the prayers and partnership of fellow Christians who share this passion for meeting our world’s needs in the name of a compassionate Christ, we continue to see possibilities and turn them into reality. AFFORDABLE CARE ON A BEAUTIFUL CAMPUS Village Woods Supportive Living Our visionary solution to the problem of an aging building includes not only a new building in the same location, but also a Supportive Living license that will allow us to provide care at rates affordable to our population. Constructing this new building specifically to meet care needs, will be a better stewardship decision than trying to renovate the existing building, and it will continue to be a centerpiece for the Crete campus. PROPOSED BUILDING QUALITY CHRISTIAN CARE IN A RADICAL NEW SETTING Victorian Village “Small House” Our innovative solution to the problem of meeting skilled care needs in Homer Glen, Illinois, is to develop a group of cottages providing 30 private rooms for rehab, and 2 groups of 10 private rooms for skilled care and memory/dementia support. Providence Life Services has received a license for a certificate of need, and we can use it to provide one of the first “Small Houses” in Illinois. We have 12 months to get the funding and begin construction before our certificate expires. continue 1972 The Holland Home coffee shop becomes a social hot spot. 1972 Left: Landscape teams plant new trees. For additional peace of mind, Life Care at Park Place will give residents access to a full continuum of on-site care, if it’s ever needed. If you are ready to begin planning for your active retirement, it is not too early to reserve space at Park Place of Elmhurst. Visit www.parkplaceelmhurst.com for more information about this exciting new Providence option, or call (630) 333-4343. The need today is greater than ever before. In 1960, when we opened our first Christian nursing home in the area, the concept was new, and people didn’t know what to expect. But after they saw the possibilities and experienced the difference, they would never be satisfied with anything less. Rest Haven had not only met the existing need, but had created a whole new standard of expectation! Today, people still want quality, Christian care. And since we are living longer, more of us are taking advantage of that care, for greater lengths of time — often to the point where savings are depleted. Each year the ministry of Providence Life Services provides significant assistance to residents whose resources have run out. Today’s economic challenges are particularly severe — not only have funds diminished in value, but also this age group has less time to recover their investment loss. continue 1973 The newly completed Holland Home provided 311 retirement apartments. ....celebrating fifty years of ministry.... provi denc e The Heart of Our Mission, continued This ministry we share is built on a solid history of Christian faith in action. The Providence family is made up of people with a variety of resources and a variety of needs. As we have throughout our ministry history, we continue to communicate with the greater Providence family, giving people opportunities to match needs with resources. We offer a variety of giving opportunities. In particular, planned gifts — gifts from estates, bequests, or gift annuities — not only assist us in caring for residents, but also provide a foundation of funding to maintain our campuses, provide educational growth for our staff, and allow us to continually research and implement new programs and care models for our residents. Last year, this ministry gave away nearly $7,000,000 in care that will not be reimbursed under Illinois’ Medicaid reimbursement rate. This trend has been steadily increasing and is now unsustainable. Will you give a gift today to ensure our current l i f e St y le New Faces, Same Hearts Kaci Anderson doesn’t know much about the original Holland Home that started in 1914. And she wasn’t even born yet when the Holland Home opened its new, six-story building in South Holland, Illinois, in 1973. She’s a newer member of the Providence family, but she embodies the same spirit of caring that has characterized this mission throughout our history. Kaci is a Dietary Aide and Nursing Aide at today’s Holland Home. She’s been there three years, and she loves her job. “I like to do extra for them,” she says about the people she serves each day. “When they’re feeling down, I like to help them see the brighter side of life. When they need help, I like to be there for them.” She recalls a simple act in the dining room: a resident was struggling to open the tiny package of creamer, so continue residents can continue to receive Christian care? = 1975 Groundbreaking for Rest Haven South in South Holland, Illinois. Sometimes that’s all it takes.” But Kaci’s supervisors and co-workers know that her acts of kindness are not limited to “the small things.” They cite examples of time spent after hours or on days off, visiting Holland Home residents who are receiving rehab at the neighboring Providence Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. “I don’t have any statistical data to prove it, but I like to think that her visits improve their recovery rates!” says Community Manager Deana Wilson, “I do know the residents appreciate it.” Holland Home has always been blessed with good people who love serving. Kaci doesn’t think her attitude or performance is anything special. She feels like she gets as much joy out of each interaction as she gives. Her coworkers, though, wanted her to know how much they appreciate her. Last year Kaci was nominated to attend the annual Hallmark of Caring, which celebrates the best of the best employees at each Providence location. The year was 1975, and Board Chairman Peter Vanderploeg explained, “The extensive waiting lists at Rest Haven and the Holland Home cannot be ignored. These lists represent urgent needs, human needs, people who have been created in the image of God, our fathers and mothers, and they deserve our maximum respect and dignity.” Rest Haven South grand opening, 1976. Rest Haven South architectural rendering, 1974. The location is the same, and the caring spirit is the same, but our commitment to quality demands that we continually offer new services to make sure we are able to meet new needs. For example, Providence of South Holland recently added the following services: = Nurse Practitioner making regular visits to our site, in addition to visits from residents’ physicians. Two years later, Rest Haven South opened its doors to meet those urgent, human needs with quality, Christian care. = Physiatrist seeing patients at our location three Today, we continue to meet needs from that same location under the name Providence Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center. This ministry was started 50 years ago in response to needs that no one else was meeting. That same responsiveness guides our ministry decisions today. And with each new form of care we add, the caring spirit behind it remains the same. = days each week specifically about their therapy progress. = Wound Care Physician working as a member of our wound care team, so we can offer more aggressive treatment options. 1978 The Women’s Auxiliary surprises Rich Mulder by re-naming the Rest Haven chapel Mulder Chapel in honor of his 20 years of passionate leadership.
