As I sit in my office and look outside to green grass and bright sunshine with temperatures in the 50’s, I ask myself is winter over? The school year is simply flying past us as we continue our goal of meeting the needs of our students’ by providing them with a variety of experiences. February marks the beginning of planning for next year’s middle school schedules. If your child is currently a sixth or seventh grade student, course selection sheets will be coming out very soon. If you have any questions about the course selection form or course description guide, please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Hillman (A-L) or Mrs. Bobinski (M-Z). I am very proud of our Power of the Pen and Science Olympiad competitors at Chardon Middle School. Both groups have been very successful of late in local competitions. Our CMS eighth grade Power of the Pen team was second overall last week at the district tournament held at Andrews Osborne Academy. Our Science Olympiad was eighth out of fifty-two teams in their recent event at Solon Middle School. I encourage you to continue to check out the Chardon Schools webpage and the Chardon Weebly to find out about all of the events and activities happening at Chardon Middle School. It is updated regularly to keep you informed. If there is something your son/daughter is involved in (in or outside of school) that deserves recognition, please share your good news with us. It is our desire that the second half of the school year be excellent for all. If you need to meet with a school counselor, assistant principal, or myself, please do not hesitate to contact us. We suggest that parents call first to schedule appointments before coming in so that you will not experience any delays. In the meantime, here’s wishing our Hilltopper families a happy, healthy, and productive New Year! Stay warm, the sound of birds chirping will be here before you know it! Please be sure to follow me on twitter at @ChardonMiddle for the most up to date information at CMS. I am starting an initiative to reach 1K followers by the end of the school year, please consider being 1 of the 1K. I am very proud of all that CMS has to offer our students. If you should have any questions, comments or suggestions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Important upcoming dates: February 10 - 8th/9th Transition Parent Presentation … LGIR … 6-8 pm February 15 - NO SCHOOL … Presidents Day Go Hilltoppers! Douglas Higham, Principal A Message from the Assistant Principal: Parents, please take a moment each morning to observe the clothing choices your child is making. Be sure that your child is dressing warmly for the weather and wearing layers as the building climate can change throughout the course of the day. Please make sure your child is in compliance with the student dress expectations, which can be found on our CMS website (scroll to the bottom of the page) or in the student handbook. This is a reminder that students are to begin entering the building at 7:05am. There has been a change to the morning routine here at CMS. Announcements are now played at approximately 7:27am. The tardy bell is still 7:30am. Students receive detentions at approximately 4 and 8 tardies. After school detentions are from 2:33-4:00pm. At 12 tardies students typically receive a Saturday School. In order to stay current with your child’s progress in class, do not forget to check Infinite Campus at least weekly, if not more often. This will give you an idea of how well your child is performing in class. Keep in mind that some assignments/tests take more time to grade than others, so grades may not be posted immediately from these more lengthy assignments. If you haven’t already, Please fill out online forms here to complete your student’s school records. Cell phones are to be put on SILENT (NOT VIBRATE). If a student is seen using the cell phone in class without a teacher’s permission it may be taken and sent to the office for a parent to pick up. Students are subject to disciplinary consequences for misuse of electronics (cell phone, Chromebook, iPod). Student Principal Advisory Council presented the “Say Something” Sandy Hook Initiative to all grades this past week. The message is to SEE warning signs, ACT immediately, and SAY something to an adult. I trusted my new friend, Not thinking about how this could end. He was someone I didn’t know, He said, “We met a long time ago.” I’m so embarrassed to admit That I fell for his trick. That night, he was outside in a van, To take me to kick the can. I knew better than to go, So I quickly said, “NO!” I’m scared to think about that night, Nothing’s ever given me such a fright. Please stay safe online, For your own safety and for mine. You wouldn’t talk to a stranger on the street, So don’t talk to one behind a screen. This career-focus is encouraged to help students find their interests, strengths, and goals for themselves with planning on how they will need to reach those future goals. Scheduling information will become available to each grade level at the end of the month, focusing on one grade level at a time. Assistance with transitions into high school and from the elementary schools is being organized and will be supported by our counseling departments. CMS counselors continue to look for local companies and professionals willing to assist in career-related activities and presentations for our students.
