events for all ages, including a grand carnival parade,
lifeboat demonstration, sandcastle competition,

flying and more!
Yarmouth Lifeboat welcomes first
female crew member
History has been made
on the RNLI's Yarmouth
Lifeboat as Vicky Tribe
has become the first
female in 91 years to join
the volunteer crew. Since
the RNLI's Yarmouth
Lifeboat Station was
first opened in 1924, many dedicated local men have
volunteered as crew saving countless lives in the seas
of the western Solent and off the back of the Wight.
But for the first time in the station's long history the
latest volunteer recruit to the Yarmouth lifeboat is
female.
Vicky Tribe, 43, works full
time as the House Manager
at the Royal Solent Yacht
Club in Yarmouth and, having
grown up on the coast and
worked abroad for many
years on luxury yachts, is
an experienced sailor with a
passion for the sea. Vicky, who
will be joining close friends
and her brother-in-law on the
crew, said: “I have enjoyed all
aspects of my training so far,
it is exciting and a privilege to
have the opportunity to crew on my local lifeboat and I
am looking forward to the challenge.”
The next demonstration with the search and rescue
helicopter will take place during Yarmouth Carnival
on Friday 21st August at 7pm.Visit

What is
Timebanking?
Timebanking is a way of
linking up the skills and needs
of the community. For every
hour you put in, you get a
one hour time credit which you can ‘spend’ by asking
for the help you need. You can also give the credits to
another person who needs help or you can save them.
Your time credits will be banked on a computer for you
to spend when you need
them. There is no regular
commitment, just get
involved when you want
to.
There is no cash involved,
only time. It is completely
free to join and anyone can
join and all are welcome.
Everyone’s time is valued
equally. The Timebank
exists to strengthen our
communities and find that
everyone has something to
offer.

Place Road Planning Appeal
Despite local feeling to the
contrary, the Planning Inspectorate
has overturned the IW Council’s
Planning Committee and
APPROVED the decision to develop
on fields between Place Road
and Tuttons Hill. With respect
to the Inspector’s decision, I’m
gutted. From my point of view as
local member, the Committee’s
decision to protect the Green
Gap separating Gurnard and
Cowes and refuse on the grounds
of settlement coalescence was
robust. To go against this, in light
of our communities who felt so
passionately about this, is a very
sad reflection of HM Government’s
Localism Agenda.

Year 6 pupils at Cowes Primary School have been
thoroughly enjoying their last few weeks before they
venture off to pastures new!
Back in school the pupils have been preparing the
traditional piece of artwork for the Year 6 leavers
gift which is presented to the school. This year each
pupil made a clay footprint engraved with a design of
their choice. Once the clay had been fired at Jubilee
Stores, the footprints were painted in one colour with
a second colour applied with a fine brush to highlight
their design.
The pupils were asked to design the final
arrangement of the footwork art and came up with
the finished piece after a collaboration of ideas. The
design is now proudly displayed at the front of the
school for all to admire.

THE JOHN HANNAM INTERVIEW
Photographs from left to right: Alan and Maureen today, Alan (left) with Bill Benton, In their wedding year of 1980, Maureen with a 1993 award.
Alan and Maureen Osborne
In today’s modern life loyalty is a virtue that has lost much of its true value. Thankfully, people like Binfield’s Alan and
Maureen Osborne are such welcome exceptions. Alan, affectionately known as Oz, has spent 67 years at the same
local football club and worked as an electrician for the SEB for 31 years. Maureen has been a member of the IW Keep
Fit Association for 35 years and has served at Farnsworth’s, the Newport newsagents, for 30 years. They’ve also been
married for 35 years, and they only met because of a freezer breakdown.
I had initially intended to write about Oz
but quickly decided to make them the
first double act to appear in this column.
They deserve nothing less.
Oz, known for his hard work, smile
and chatty nature, joined Barton Old
Boys football club in 1948 - and is still
there. They became Barton Sports and
then Whitecroft Barton. The names may
have changed slightly but at the age of
84, he’s as enthusiastic as ever. Don’t tell
Maureen - but he’s still very active in the
upkeep of the outside of the clubhouse.
“We won the Island League last
season and the gap since the last time
was 27 years. I have never thought of
going anywhere else. It was something
of a family tradition and I’ve loved my
involvement as a player, committee man,
secretary, president, linesman and odd
job man,” said Alan.
There have been highlights and none
more than when they signed local kid
Gareth Williams, who was playing for
Carisbrooke Reserves at the time. The
youngster never looked back and ended
up playing for Aston Villa in the Premier
League. The arrival of Jock Horne at
Seaclose was a master stroke and he
took the club to new heights. The day he
and Oz tempted Oscar Stretch to their
club also heralded a new era.
Barton has always been such a well
respected club with a good reputation for
the more skilful elements of the game.
“In the early days we even had blazers
with a club badge on the pocket but, to
be honest, not too many of our players
were blazer people.”
12
Oz worked for the SEB for 31 years
and he wired up almost half the homes
on Pan Estate. Then he became one
of their first refrigeration engineers.
Suddenly he took a decision that
seemed completely out of character and
it surprised so many of his friends.
“No-one had left the SEB, as it was a
job for life. I decided to get something
out of my system and went to work for
Lockhead International in Saudi Arabia
for three years. Ironically, it was in
1976 and in that year I left the Island
to work and Maureen arrived from the
mainland.”
Maureen, who was born in Southsea,
came to the Island to become a partner
in a family business to run the Sandham
Lodge Hotel in Sandown, which only
lasted a couple of years or so. Then,
eventually she went to work at Newport’s
Jubilee Nurseries.
Prior to moving to the Island Maureen
had been a once-a-week keep fitter.
When Sheila Ball offered her a job at the
nurseries it was to alter the course of
her life in more ways than one.
“Sheila introduced me to the IW Keep
Fit Assocation and I have been with
them since 1980. I still go three times
a week and love it. When I first joined
we did it all in bare feet but times have
changed. I think being with the group
has really given me a well being and
the camaraderie is so wonderful,” said
Maureen. Over the years Maureen has
won several well deserved awards for
her keep fit activities and appeared three
times at the Albert Hall. At the age of 75,
she’s a real credit to the Island club and
has a figure to envy.
Meanwhile, Alan Osborne had come
back to the Island after his Saudi years
and started his own refrigeration
business. His back legs and lower body
could regularly be seen protruding from
underneath freezers in Island shops.
A freezer breakdown at the Jubilee
Nurseries changed his life for ever. I
think it was actually a second visit that
proved the best call out of his life. He
went back to adjust a minor fault and
being of a friendly disposition gave
Sheila, the owner, a welcoming cuddle.
An assistant called Maureen shouted
out in fun: “Don’t I get one, too!”
Unbeknown to them at the time, it was
to be the first of many. His new car must
have impressed her, too.
“We both had personal problems at
the time and we thought it might help
if we went out together and talked about
them,” revealed Oz.
Then came the first date. He arranged
to take her for a drink to the Sun Inn
at Calbourne. A last minute phone call
from Oz, not of the romantic kind, asked
if she minded going via East Cowes, as
he’d had an emergency call out to Frank
James Hospital.
The year of 1980 proved so memorable
for Alan and Maureen. They were both
divorced on April 1 and got married
on April 7. It was a quiet wedding with
just two witnesses. It was the best thing
they could ever have done. Is it Mills
and Boon material? Could be. True love
created by a faulty freezer! What a story!

Venus Awards
Referred to as the Working Women’s Oscars, the Venus Awards
were formed in 2009 to recognise, reward and celebrate local
working women in business. The Venus Awards are designed to
reward women who are working hard in every area of their life.
The Venus Awards began in Dorset and are now moving into
other regions across the country, including the Isle of Wight.
Mary Burgess is regional
partner for the Venus Isle of
Wight Awards. Having won
a Venus Award herself in the
Inspirational Women category
last year, Mary wanted to take
on the role. Mary tells us more
about the Venus Awards, “What
we’re going to do is recognise
the inspirational women and
business women on the Island
and the contribution they
make. I’m from the Island;
I grew up in care, I lost my
parents and grandparents at an
early age. I built my businesses
up myself and have overcome adversity. There are lots of other
women who have also overcome adversity on the Isle of Wight
and are a success. I couldn’t be prouder to be involved.”

ISLAND STORY by Alan Stroud
. . . From rails to footpaths - How the Newport
to Freshwater Railway left its mark
These men and their train are at Freshwater Station. Actually, they are sat in the aisles of
what is currently the town’s Co-op supermarket. They are the product of that Victorian
phenomena, ‘railway madness,’ a condition that led investors to believe that all they had
to do to achieve wealth beyond their wildest dreams was to open a railway between two
points - and virtually any two points would do.
The end result was that once upon
a time there were over 60 miles of
railway lines on the Island. They went
everywhere - Cowes to Ryde, Newport
to Sandown, Newport to Freshwater
and even Brading to Bembridge.
However, of all the lines only the Ryde
to Ventnor line was ever troubled by
making a profit. The others were sorry
tales of court battles and bankruptcies,
the Newport to Sandown line even
collapsing into the arms of the Official
Receiver before it was opened. At one
point, Parliament even gave permission
for a Shanklin to Chale Railway. What
a money spinner that would have been.
Luckily for us, one by-product of these
rash Victorian gambles is that the old
lines have left us a network of footpaths
and cycleways through some of the
loveliest scenery on the Island. That’s
certainly true of the subject of this
month’s Island Story, the Freshwater,
Yarmouth and Newport Railway.
The line just about managed to break
even for most of its life - but only just.
It opened in 1889, soldiered on for
64 highly unprofitable years before
giving up the ghost and closing in1953.
The line has left its mark though and
Freshwater Station shortly after opening in1890. The train is sitting
exactly where the aisles of the soon to be closed Freshwater Co-op
are for the moment. The station building on the left is on the edge of
today’s roundabout at the bottom of Hooke Hill.
18
much of it can still be traced today.
For example, just a few feet away
from the men in the photo, hidden
under gardening supplies, is a little
known Freshwater secret — in Honnor
and Jeffrey’s yard it is still possible
to stand on the original Freshwater
station platform. Against all the odds,
buried under fence panels and bags of
compost, a section of the platform and
original station fence has managed to
survive. As if that were not enough
for train buffs, the cafe next door takes
its name from the past, the End of The
Line.
ISLAND STORY by Alan Stroud
The Newport to Freshwater line crossed the road at the bottom of Hunny Hill on this viaduct, seen here in about 1911,
and then made its way through Sainsburys frozen food aisle. The same view, including the very same wall, can be seen
today by looking at Hunny Hill from the water feature in Foxes Road, just down from the Sainsburys entrance.
The beginning of the line was at
Newport railway station which was on
Medina Way roughly where Hamilton
and Marshall the undertakers are. The
line then made its way past Sainsbury’s
filling station, crossed Hunny Hill
(see photo above) and then ploughed
through Sainsburys frozen vegetable
aisle before leaving through the
home baking section. It then crossed
Petticoat Lane, where the crossing
keeper’s house still exists, and made its
way to Carisbrooke Station, now buried
under the playing fields of Christ
The King School in Wellington Road.
Passing under the road at Gunville
near the Spar store, the line carried on
across farmland until it came to Betty
Haunt Lane where it passed under
the road bridge which still stands to
this day, a bridge crossing over a non
existent line. For those with eagle eyes,
in winter and early spring a crop mark
appears across the fields quite clearly
showing the line of the long gone
track bed.
The next stop was Watchingwell
Station; except that it wasn’t. The tiny
station, which still exists, was solely
for the use of the landowner who
demanded it as a condition of allowing
the line to pass through his land. It can
be found on the public footpath that
starts at Great Park Farm.
Even Calbourne had a station in
those days. It was situated along
Elm Lane and was demolished in the
early seventies. A bungalow, Badger’s
Bend, now stands on the site and in
the private garden at the rear much of
the station platform still exists. A mile
further on was Ningwood Station, at the
junction of Wellow Bottom Road and
Station Road. Now in private ownership,
a surprising amount of the original
station still exists. The station building,
not open to the public, has become a
delightful house and in the back garden
a sizeable section of the platforms still
exist complete with original platform
shelter.
The Yarmouth station building also
still exists. After years of stagnation
in Council ownership, it has just
been given a clever and imaginative
makeover to be transformed into the
‘Off The Rails’ restaurant. Starting
from there, the former trackbed to
Freshwater forms the cycleway which
runs alongside the Yar with beautiful
views of the river. At the end is the
picturesque causeway crossing, just
down from the Red Lion pub, and from
there the trackbed leads through the
reed beds back to the ‘End Of The
Line’ café.
The original investors in the Newport
to Freshwater railway probably
wouldn’t agree but for us it was money
well spent.
Now buried under the playing fields of Christ The
King College in Wellington Road, this is Carisbrooke
railway station. Complete with passenger!

Islanders who make a difference were recently celebrated at a glittering awards ceremony. The Isle
of Wight Radio Local Hero Awards 2015 highlighted those who go above and beyond expectations
and a host of awards were presented at the Wightfibre sponsored event.
This year’s overall Isle of Wight Radio Local
Hero, and the most emotional award of the
night, went to firefighter, Martin Poynter,
who sadly passed away earlier this year. The
200-strong audience rose to their feet as his
award was received by his wife and children,
watched by many of his colleagues from Blue
Watch.
There was a standing ovation for the Asa
Singleton Courageous Child award winner,
three-year-old Chelsea Turner. Chelsea has
four limb cerebral palsy, is registered blind,
has severe brain damage, epilepsy, cannot
communicate and is fed through a tube. But,
despite these challenges, and having to endure
many hospital attendances this little girl
continues to smile and bring love and happiness
to so many people. Through her efforts, and
those of her parents, Chelsea has helped to raise
over £10,000 towards a sensory nursery for other children and a
hot tub to help children who have the same condition.
The Beacon magazine sponsored the Make a Difference in the
Community Award and editor Sarah Griffin presented the award
to Carol Court for her work with Ability Dogs 4 Young People.
Sarah said, “It was truly inspirational to spend the evening with
so many selfless Islanders. Congratulations to all the deserving
nominees and winners.”

Recovering Compensation
Will Help You Rebuild Your Life
Darren, tell us about
Novum Law.
If you or a loved one
has been affected by a
serious injury, you will
know, only too well, the
changes it can bring and
that often those changes
last a lifetime.
This is why it is vital that the legal
team set up to advise you needs
to be made up from specialists,
understanding your individual needs
and working with you to achieve
the right outcome for your future.
Novum Law is such a dedicated
team, working with clients who have
suffered serious injuries, whenever
and however they occurred. Darren
O’Sullivan of Novum Law talks to us
about his work.
Novum Law is a specialist law
firm dealing with serious injuries,
medical negligence and asbestos
related diseases. All our lawyers,
based on the Isle of Wight and
throughout the country, are highly
trained personal injury lawyers
with decades of experience dealing
exclusively in high-value claims of
extreme complexity.
Why is it important to deal with
a specialist lawyer?
Serious injury and medical
negligence claims require expertise
borne from experience; only with a
specialist will you be able to recover
the correct amount of compensation
to help you in the future. It is
essential that each case is assessed
correctly from the outset and that
the right team of experts is put
together to work through the case
and give you the support you need,
not just there and then, but for the
rest of your life.
Is it just about the money?
Absolutely not. The amount of
compensation is important because
it will help you to live your life as
fully as possible but, along the
way, there are other things to
think about. The team at Novum
Law understands that, for some
clients, this is the first time they
will have instructed a solicitor and
the prospect can be daunting so, we
make everything clear and easy to
understand; we take the worry out
of the whole process so that all you
need to do is concentrate on your
recovery.
What do your clients say about
Novum Law?
The best way to answer this is to
let the clients speak for themselves.
Mrs J, whose husband sustained
a severe brain injury at work said:
“Because they deal with serious
injuries every day, Novum Law
knew what I was going through. It’s
the hardest thing I’ve ever had to
face. They gave me support where
they saw I needed it. They listened
well and they took on board my
feelings. My Novum Law solicitor
was by my side in the court. I was
awarded much more than I thought
I would get, but it was never just
about the money. I just wanted my
husband home with me. And he is
back home with me now. Going with
Novum Law was the best thing I’ve
ever done.”

GET THE HELP AND ADVICE YOU NEED
Stay out stranger!
Every year hundreds of householders, often the
elderly and infirm, report that they have fallen
victim to distraction burglars and bogus callers.
Distraction burglary is described as any crime where a
falsehood, trick or distraction is used to gain, or try to gain,
access to the premises to commit burglary. These types
of crimes are not spontaneous; they are not committed
by opportunists for a few pounds, they are well organised
groups that travel hundreds of miles to target specific areas.
Distraction burglars tend to use a number of ruses in order
to gain entry into people’s homes, often posing as utility
workers, or council officials claiming to be from the ‘Water
Board’. It is often assumed that distraction burglars are
men, but this is not always the case; these groups often
include women and children as well. Doorstep crime also
encompasses rogue traders. This is where bogus gardeners
or builders carry out inferior work or repairs on a property
and then charge extortionate amounts of money for below
standard work.
If you have elderly or vulnerable friends or neighbours,
remind them about being careful and to keep the door shut
if they don’t recognise the caller. Don’t keep large amounts
of cash at home and don’t be afraid to call 999 or 101 if you

Have you tried Manny’s
famous Pastel de Nata?
At Manny’s Baguettes the husband and wife team,
Mariela and Emanuel (aka Manny), have been bringing
a slice of Portuguese culture to Cowes. Their traditional
custard tarts are proving to be extremely popular!
Manny told us, “We sell out of Portuguese custard
tarts (Pastel de Nata) most days. These are made
by us everyday, using Isle of Wight cream, in small
batches so they are always fresh and yummy.” To avoid
disappointment you can order (any quantity) by calling
them on 07516 819619.
Manny’s Baguettes also serve a selection of freshly
baked baguettes, sandwiches, wraps, toasties,
homemade soup, cakes, hot and cold drinks. Celebration
cakes and cupcakes can be made to order too.

Your essential 3
summer first
aid kit . . .
EpiPen: If you have a family
member with a history of severe
allergic reactions (anaphylaxis),
ask your doctor for a prescription
EpiPen. Keep yours in the outside
pocket of your first aid kit for quick,
easy access.
Keep your summer fun
by making sure you have
everything you need for
your family with our
summer first aid kit. Insect
bites, sun burn, scrapes
and blisters needn’t ruin
the fun if you’re prepared!
1
Water bottle for cleaning out
wounds: The first thing you’ll
need to do with an injury is clean out
the wound, so a bottle comes in really
handy! You can use your water bottle
to treat dehydration, too.
2
Benadryl (Diphenhydramine):
Benadryl is probably the most
important over-the-counter medication
to have in your first aid kit—it’s a first
line treatment for insect bites, hives,
and other allergic reactions.
26
4
Numbing spray: Wound numbing
spray can be purchased over-thecounter at any pharmacy and can
really save-the-day when a child is
sunburned, or has a painful cut or
scrape.
5
Sunblock: The worst sunburns
occur when you least expect
it—at sports events, or while doing
gardening work. Have some SPF 30+
sunblock ready to cover those little
spots on your ears and neck that your
hat doesn’t cover. Include some SPF
lip balm too.
6
Insect repellant spray: Insect bites
are annoying at best, but at worst
when they get scratched and infected.
Prevent irritation with a quick spritz
before you head outdoors.
7
Hydrocortisone ointment: This
inexpensive over-the-counter
medication will treat almost anything
that itches. If you stop the itch, the
kids won’t scratch, and you reduce
the risk of secondary infection.
8
Flashlight/headlamp: If you don’t
have a reliable light on your
phone, include an LED flashlight or
headlamp. A flashlight is not just
for night time injuries—you’ll need
a bright light to get a good look at
splinters, or look in kids’ mouths and
ears, etc.
9
Baby wipes: Even if your kids
are out of nappies, a pack of baby
wipes is infinitely useful in the car,
especially for keeping hands clean
and wiping noses.
10
Alcohol wipes*: Useful for
cleaning skin before trying to
remove splinters and for sterilising
tweezers. *Can cause an allergic
reaction

Feel Safe And
Confident With Tooth
Whitening From Avenue
Road Dental Practice
There are reasons why tooth whitening in the UK
can only be legally provided by registered dental
professionals. Those reasons are all about safety.
Tooth whitening is not only about stain removal. It’s
about changing the colour of the teeth themselves
and to do this relies on the use of powerful
chemicals. If not used properly these chemicals
can damage teeth and gums. Using the wrong
chemicals or using them incorrectly can cause
permanent, irreversible damage.
Some teeth cannot be whitened. Some need
special techniques to provide a good result so in all
cases a thorough professional examination of your
teeth and gums is necessary before whitening to
identify individual risks or problems.
The fee for tooth whitening at Avenue Road Dental
Practice is £260.00. This month this will include a
full-mouth examination (usual cost £55.00) as well as
whitening trays, whitening gel and full instructions.
What’s more, if you’re suitable for whitening we will
guarantee to improve the colour of your natural
teeth by at least 5 shades on the industry-standard
Lumin shade guide or we’ll refund your payment
in full.*
*Offer limited to first 10 people to apply

There is such an abundance of beautiful,
colourful and vibrant blooms in season
this month, it felt only right to have flowers
of the month, rather than a single plant!
Sunflowers, gerberas, lilies, roses and
gazania are all top of our list for providing
a rich, interesting and multi-coloured
arrangement of blooms. Enjoy the opulent
and diverse colours on display this month in
the garden and also around the house.

Frank Schrijver UK Ltd offer a unique product,
the Schrijver Damp Control System - an awardwinning solution for problems caused by rising damp,
penetrating damp and condensation.
The Schrijver System works in a completely different
way to any other traditional damp proofing methods.
They do this by installing a series of small, discreet
handmade elements into the external face of the
wall. Moisture is drawn out of the wall into these
elements and then channelled into the outside air.
All the work is carried out externally; there are no
chemicals, no need to re-plaster or redecorate, with
no mess, just a permanent solution to the problems
caused by damp, backed up by a lifetime guarantee
and the system is suitable for almost any property.
