I mentioned last week that being a long faced fanatic can just as effectively block our discernment as never thinking about God at all. That was Jesus’ issue with the Pharisees; they were very religious, but didn’t recognize God when he showed up – in Jesus. Clearly their ideas about God and his will blinded them to reality. True discernment is a gift of the Spirit, and the only way to get it is to pray for it. The wisdom of the ages in the Church is that we discern best when we are in a relationship with another person, perhaps a spiritual director. A good spiritual director can honestly assess our discernment attempts and help us to see what God is saying. Unfortunately finding a spiritual director is very difficult, there are few available. However you can find a “spiritual friend” someone who will tell you the truth as they understand it, and who might be willing to journey and pray with you. You have heard the phrase someone “can’t see the forest for the trees” recognizing that a person isn’t getting it, isn’t connecting the dots, and because it is so easy for us to read God’s will as “what I want.” For example a common mis-discernment is “I want to do God’s will, as long as it includes __________ [fill in the blank.]” That isn’t discernment at all; it is telling God what you want and subordinating the discernment of his will to your desire. There is nothing wrong in telling God what you desire, but it is not discernment of his will for your life. When you are discerning you look for the end for which you were created, and then all your choices must help toward that end. A friend can help to see when you are fooling yourself or when you are actually trying to discern. .
