With the recent dips in temperature, we have all been relieved to turn off our air conditioners
and open the windows…allowing us to notice some of the more non-traditional living, working
and entertaining spaces around our area. So, in lieu of our standard full-home feature, this month
we bring you a different kind of inspiration – barn living!

is transformed
into a comfortable
entertaining space

CitiScapes Magazine: This barn
seems to have a bit of history
behind it. Structurally, how did it
become the barn it is today?
Neal and Gina Pendergraft: The heart pine
timber for the barn was harvested and milled
in Eureka Springs, approximately 120 years
ago. The original barn was built around
1889 and sat on a stacked-rock foundation.
It was used for livestock, hay and tools. We
purchased the original four acres with the
barn, stalls and home in 1991 and, in 1999,
Neal Hefner Construction disassembled the
barn. Each joint was labeled, the pins were
driven out and the barn timber was stored
in a trailer. The exterior wood was removed,
treated and cleaned. Each piece of lumber
that was not rotten from water or termites
was saved. It took about two years to
complete the project. The barn now sits on a
concrete foundation. Each joint was put back
together and the original pins were replaced.
When you stand in the barn’s kitchen, you
are in the old barn.

How did the vision for the design
and décor of the barn evolve?
When we first bought the property, Neal
would spend time up in the hayloft, taking
pictures and trying to visualize a new life for
the old barn. We always envisioned it as a
place for our daughters to entertain friends
and a place where we could entertain family,
friends and our church youth groups, and
a place to have live music. But, the original
vision for the remodel of the barn was Neal’s.
When we got serious about planning, Gina is
the one who made the whole place flow.

With a full kitchen, plenty of seating,
a bowling alley, basketball court and
music room, the barn appears to be
the perfect place to entertain, just as
you had envisioned. What types of
gatherings have you hosted?
Our largest event ever was the first Tommy’s
Night Out in October 2009. More than 800
people attended the outdoor fundraising event
for the Vanzandt family. We have had multiple
church youth group gatherings, and our
daughters have hosted numerous sleepovers.
We held a fundraising event for the new United
States Marshals Museum in Fort Smith and
were proud to have both Senator Pryor and
Senator Boozman in attendance. We have also
hosted events for the University of Arkansas –
Fort Smith Alumni, the Nature Conservancy
Cache River Restoration Project, as well as
multiple wedding showers and a wedding
reception for Neal’s lifelong friend and
contractor, Neal Hefner and his wife, Angela.

We have hosted surprise birthday parties and
hundreds of dinner parties, and much, much
more. We have definitely gotten the use out
of the barn.
Pieces in Neal’s Nudie Cohen Suit Collection
The décor of the barn seems to be
centered around some interesting
collections. Were these purchased
exclusively for the barn?
No, the barn just gave us the perfect space
to display the collections in. They say that
as an adult you collect what you liked as a
kid. These are some of the things Neal liked
as a kid…and still does. The Nudie Cohen
suits are now displayed in boxes made by
the Duck Club Gallery in Fayetteville. Nudie
was a tailor who had Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors
in Hollywood. Nudie became known for his
flashy suits decorated with rhinestones and
embroidery. All but one of the suits in the barn
are original. Another favorite is the animation
cell collection that hangs in the bowling alley.
These are not “animation art.” Each cell was
used in the production of a cartoon.

Who gets credit for winning
all of the trophies displayed in
the dining area?
We have two daughters who have been
showing horses for about 12 years. Rachel,
20, is a sophomore at Texas Christian
University and continues to show (when her
schedule allows) on her horse G.W. Jackbar,
aka George. Sarah Ann, 18, is a senior at
Fayetteville High School and shows her
quarter horse Zip Past the Jag, aka Jag, year
round at the major Quarter Horse shows
around the U.S. Recently, she was on the 2012
American Quarter Horse Youth Association
World Cup Team that competed in Krueth,
Germany. Our girls have both done really
well and we’ve enjoyed traveling as a family
to numerous shows across the country. With
both rider and horse having the opportunity
to win an individual trophy, we’ve been able
to acquire quite a collection.

new barn with a touch

CitiScapes Magazine: What is
the history behind the building
of the barn?
Carmen Nelson: We had an existing old barn
on the property, used for farm equipment.
This new barn was not even a thought until I
rescued two horses: Isabella and Alexandria.
In 2010, when I was director of the Humane
Society of the Ozarks, we rescued several
horses and I adopted these two. I boarded
my horses at a friend’s stable in Lincoln
and only had weekends free to spend time
with them – which was not nearly enough.

I missed them every day of the week. Thus,
the plan to build a barn for them began. I
had an idea of what I wanted it to look like,
so we started with graph paper and designed
it. Putting the finishing touches on it was so fun
– it’s a barn…you can do anything you want!
How did you decide on the
final look for the barn and what
was your motivation for the
stylish design and use of color?
We knew we wanted a barn that was unique
and incorporated different materials – the
use of cedar, metal, rock and wood was the
foundation of the look we envisioned for the
barn. I love the pop and surprise of color,
which I incorporated in a whimsical way with
the turquoise striped bathroom and accent
on the custom-painted desk legs. The use of
wood and metal on the interior was to give it
a rustic and industrial feel.
How do you and your husband
use the barn? We built the barn for the horses and
added the upstairs for our enjoyment.
We enjoy spending time on the deck
upstairs – it is so relaxing to watch the
horses frolic and graze from up there.

We usually have an appetizer and glass
of wine in the evenings on the deck. Our
dogs love to watch the horses; they are so
intrigued by them! There is an invisible fence
surrounding the horse pasture so the dogs
can’t get in and bother the horses.

Do you use the space for entertaining?
We have not hosted any parties as of yet.
Once we complete the upstairs, which is 1,800
square feet of open space, I plan on having a
few gatherings. I’m now the director of a

new nonprofit, Animal League of Washington
County, dedicated to supporting animal
welfare in our area. So, there’s the possibility
of hosting a fundraiser here in the future.
How are your horses enjoying
their new space?
Not sure if they appreciate the style and décor,
but they are certainly enjoying the amenities
and functionality of it. We installed seven
ceiling fans downstairs and three upstairs.
Each horse stall has a ceiling fan that the
horses love to nap under. They also enjoy
the covered bay area outside their stalls. We
installed an automatic watering system in
the stalls, mainly for winter, so their water
won’t freeze. The barn was built for them.
Considering the horrible conditions from
which we rescued them, they deserve to have
a wonderful place to call home. My husband
calls the barn “Bella’s House.” ■
