April 1, 2015 Race Registration Is Open! Oct. 31, 2015 25th Komen Houston Race for the Cure® Presented by Marathon Oil Corporation Chair: Betsy Kamin Nov. 16, 2015 2nd Annual Golf Classic Chair: Tammy Howell Feb. 20, 2016 25th Anniversary Gala Chairs: Jane and Ed Parker, Judy and Glenn Smith INSIDE THIS ISSUE: o celebrate our 25th anniversary, Susan G. Komen Houston is unveiling a yearlong campaign designed to support our promise to save lives and end breast cancer forever. Our goal is to raise $3,750,000 this year to fund 25,000 more mammograms in the seven-county area we serve. We invite you to join the 25 Year Anniversary Circle by donating to our mammogram fund. With a gift of $150, you provide this life-saving procedure to women who otherwise could not afford it. The year 2011 was a milestone for Mary Helen Ybanez: She was turning 50, and her family and friends had planned a special celebration. In the middle of all the planning and excitement, Mary Helen had a routine mammogram. The Monday after her party, she sat down with her doctor and heard those dreaded words: “You have breast cancer.” “I was in shock, scared, in disbelief, followed by many tears. I thought I was so invincible,” Mary Helen says. “One thing I did know was that having that Mary Helen Ybanez routine mammogram truly saved my life. I could have easily delayed my mammogram, but instead I kept my appointment and I am alive today because I did.” Mary Helen’s journey through surgery and treatment was overwhelming and fast paced, but on Nov. 7 she celebrated her final treatment. The following year, she was well enough to participate in Race for the Cure®. Mary’s story is only one example of why mammograms are so important. There are many women who go without getting a mammogram because they can’t afford it. Supporting our goal to fund more mammograms means more survivors. We need more survivors! In the 25 years since our inception, Komen Houston has successfully brought breast cancer to the forefront, changing how Houston talks about and treats the disease. Komen Houston has grown to become one of the largest affiliate networks of survivors and advocates, funding more than $48 million to power national breast cancer research and local community programs that offer education, screenings, treatment and support services. Komen® Houston Supports Reconstruction of a Survivor V Vicky has participated in support group meetings organized by the local support group Reconstruction of a Survivor. How You Can Help You can ensure that support groups like Reconstruction of a Survivor can continue making a difference in the lives of breast cancer patients across icky woke up and got in the shower, going about her day as usual. She felt a slight twinge of pain underneath her arm. When she discovered the hard lump in her left breast, her world turned upside down. Faced with a stage two breast cancer diagnosis, Vicky struggled to wrap her head around her thoughts, worries and what to do next. Everyone around her would be affected by her diagnosis—friends, family, coworkers. Vicky’s patient navigator encouraged her to join a local support group, Reconstruction of a Survivor. A grantee organization of Susan G. Komen® Houston, Reconstruction of a Survivor creates, builds and conducts support group meetings for breast cancer survivors, patients, friends and family members to help all parties understand the disease, cope with treatment and learn how to support each other through 27 unique, targeted sessions. Facilitators of the groups are survivors themselves and are supported along the way by Susan G. Komen® Houston. “The grant from Susan G. Komen® Houston allows us to bring hope into what seems to be a hopeless situation when a woman hears, ‘You have breast cancer.’ The support allows us to have incredible group leaders and provide healthy meals for our meetings,” says Dr. Jennie M. Bennett, founder of Reconstruction of a Survivor. “These funds ensure that we are able to continue life-changing work, growing and serving women and their families throughout the greater Houston area.” Vicky’s experience with Reconstruction of a Survivor proved to be exactly what she needed. She found an understanding support system of women who had been where she was. “The staff at Reconstruction of a Survivor understands the journey, the needs and the path that someone fighting breast cancer takes,” Vicky says.
