Still lot’s of people going to the grocery stores and the roads are very busy. Speaking of busy, the family was every where this weekend. Our weekend truely always starts on a Friday. First pick up two kids, drive one to work, bring the other home, drive to go get the third, to take her to work, to return to pick them both up from work. Saturday, we went to Beaver Dam for Brandon, who won. Then, came back home to take the girls to the rink to catch the bus. So, we could then drive back down to Brookfield for Kenzy, who won her game, that ended at 10:30pm. We then drove over to Madison to stay the night for a game Brandon had in the morning, he won. Some call us crazy, dedicated, all we know is, we return tired, but we always mange to have fun and we are always together as a family, the kids always enjoy supporting each other. We want to thank all the children who participated in the coloring contest. We didn’t get as many entries this year, but as always we enjoyed everyone’s entry. We truely do admire them, we put them on our doors so we always get to look at them. Even my children enjoy coming to work and seeing them over their break. So, here are the winners of this year’s contest. Watch for your gift cards coming soon in the mail. Always On Time! 6 Holiday Mood at 58th Annual Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society’s Holiday Antique Show Article & photos by Brian Maloney The Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society Holiday Antiques Show is one of the Badger State’s oldest antiques events, started way back in 1957. The society itself is far older though, founded ninety years ago by local businesswoman Jesse Buchanan. She had an ambitious goal: to make Green Bay an American center of history and culture. Buchanan was tireless in advocating historical preservation in the area and did much to preserve its treasures. She, along with a group of like-minded area women, founded the Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society in 1923. Distressed upon seeing early Green Bay artifacts being sold to distant collectors, Buchanan began a systematic search for historically accurate artifacts for the area’s historic landmarks. That effort, often supplemented with loans or donations from her own collections and coffers, also helped refurbish many area museums. She was also instrumental in initiating a campaign to restore several historic buildings located at nearby Heritage Hill State Historical Park. Today’s members continue the pursuit and restoration of original or period authentic furnishings for area museums. Recent Antiquarian Society acquisitions include what has become known as The Heritage Collection, an important and wide-ranging group of artifacts consisting of everything from a Matthew Brady photo of Abraham Lincoln signed by the President himself to a large collection of original Howard Pyle Paintings. Known as “The Father of American Illustration,” Pyle’s books, magazine illustrations, and paintings were well known both here and abroad. In fact, Vincent van Gogh once commented in a letter to his brother that Pyle's work "struck me dumb with admiration." Two more standouts at Pierce Regal: the light-up clock with Milwaukee jeweler’s advertising priced at $345, the child-sized Morris Chair at $545. 414-385-9820 And the Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society’s Annual Holiday Antique Show has been an important piece of their fund-raising pie for all of those years. This 58th edition of the show was a big success, with good attendance and sales on both Saturday and Sunday. Quality dealers from Wisconsin and the surrounding states journeyed to the Rock Garden Convention Center with a wide variety of quality antiques and artifacts. Furniture purveyor Beneath the Dust was among them, their booth filled with period furniture from fine to funky. Among their inventory: a classic American country Chippendale drop-front desk in cherry, priced at a bargain $890. Milwaukee’s Pierce Regal continued the fine furnishing theme, bringing the best in 19th century lighting, furniture, and mnore. Period jewelry more your thing? There was something from every era here at the show: from unusual Victorian examples at Wrightstown Antique Gallery to vintage Bakelite at Barbary Stoy Antiques to En Vogue’s huge array of Miriam Haskell fashion jewelry. In fact, no matter your collecting interests there was probably something here for you - from authentic Native American handcrafts at Welsch’s Antiques to toys & advertising galore at Pearmont Antiques. You can find more information about both the society and the show (and make a donation if you like) at the Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society’s website www.antiquariansocietygbdp.org. And as always, keep an eye out for next year’s 59th Annual Green Bay and De Pere Antiquarian Society Holiday Antique Show & Sale in the Auction Action Antique News! Milwaukee’s Pierce Regal brought their usual excellent selection of period furniture and lighting, including this impressive 19th century walnut breakfront bookcase priced at $3,495. 414-385-9820 En Vogue came with a fabulous array of period fashion jewelry. They specialize in pieces from New York jeweler Miriam Haskell, whose clients ranged from Florenz Ziegfeld to the Duchess of Windsor! 630-325-4354 You never know quite what you’ll find at the eclectic Wrightstown Antique Gallery, from a vintage Kewpie Doll table lamp ($155) to a Bavarian hunting amulet priced at $275. 920-532-4308 Shoppers found plenty of vintage fashions to peruse at Carolina’s Once in a Blue Moon, plus this original Knickerbocker Smoky the Bear doll priced at $85. 920-468-1177 More exceptional period jewelry awaited at Wrightstown Antique Gallery, where I found this 19th century Sterling-mounted hummingbird head brooch ($325) and Mid-Victorian trio of 14k gold & woven human hair pins - $225. 920-532-4308 7 Continued on page 8 Great toys awaited at Early Times Antiques, from this wooden rocking horse ($165) to a Superior Toys “State Fair” child’s pinball machine priced at only $58. 920-928-2109 Furniture highlights at Larry Kaczmarek’s Village Blacksmith Antiques included this country corner cupboard (52” x 76”) and an oak stacking bookcase with leaded window above & drawer below - $625. 920-993-9817 Two vintage handcrafted ship models from Time’s Treasures: the 28” riverboat priced at $275, the 22” Harriet Lane side-wheeler also at $275. 608-617-7066 It was like stepping into a MidCentury living room at 29 Palms, The Collector’s Oasis, where I found this Marx litho-tin Electric Train Set priced at $100. 815-968-9817 My regional fine art favorite at Village Blacksmith Antiques: this 1897 Robert Heuel “Scene from the Humboldt Street Bridge, Milwaukee” landscape priced at $1,200. 920-993-9817 Unlikely shelf-mates at The Rock Step included this pottery pug humidor watching over a vintage Native American birchbark trinket box. 608-588-2701 Two vintage toy vehicles from Early Times Antiques: the boxed Ideal Fix-It Concertible priced at $48, the Structo Telephone Co. steel truck at $35. 920-928-2109 Child-sized delights from Victorian House Antiques: the rare miniature bride’s basket (with pen for scale) priced at $225, the tiny German luster doll’s canister set at $295. 608-879-2567 Shoppers found a nice assortment of English pottery jugs at The Rock Step, plus American stoneware like this Carleton Bachelder (Menasha, WI) three-gallon floral decorated churn. 608-588-2701 The best in Native American artifacts could be had at Welsch’s Antiques, like this 9 1/2” Mescalero Apache polychrome basket ($875) and circa 1890 13 1/2” Western Apache shallow basket priced at $2,400. 920-923-3842 A small pack of period cast iron dog doorstops & boot scrapers stood guard at Victorian House Antiques, where sat this 1930s Clownin tabletop pinball game - $175. 608-879-2567 8 Continued from pages 6 & 7 Lyn’s Antiques offered lovely vintage silk powder puffs, with prices from $55. 920-246-0116 Two Betty Boop-style Noritake luncheon sets from Lyn’s Antiques: choose the four-place set in gold for $110, or the larger blue service for $175. 920-246-0116 There were lots of pressed steel toys to choose from at Ted Slaton Art & Antiques, plus this near-mint Rollfast cruiser bike priced at only $295. 608-792-5470 Best of the period Native American beadwork at Welsch’s Antiques: this just-acquired 19th century Cass Lake Ojibwa bandolier bag, price tag $1,950. 920-923-3842 Barbara Stoy Antiques came with the vintage jewelry they’re best known for plus surprises like this 7” x 9” Mark Tobey painting dating from 1954 & priced at $4,800. Important funding provided by WADA was used to restore a painting of Mrs. Conrad Seipp at Lake Geneva's 1888 Black Point Estate, the summer retreat of Conrad Seipp, a wealthy Chicago brewer. Proceeds from the April, 2014 auction held at Old World Wisconsin continue to fund textile restorations at Black Point Estate. If you ever traveled down County Highway K between 1947 and 1975, you may have encountered the tiny one-bedroom farm home of Adam and Anna Berg with signs “Odd Job Work” and “Asparagus” hanging on the clapboards. Adam had just retired as a Chicago cab driver in 1947 when he and Anna made Wild Rose their home, selling asparagus and charging 10-cent admission to their art gallery to generate a small cash income. He became known locally as the “Asparagus Man”. A self-taught folk artist, Berg believed isolation from the cultural mainstream allowed him to develop a technique to “carve” his paintings using the medium of oil. By adding multiple layers of oil paint over a period of years, he transformed his paintings into low reliefs up to _” thick. Here, in his primitive Wild Rose surroundings, he traded his Chicago cab for a used bicycle, never owning an automobile again. He and Anna lived without modern conveniences, including running water (except a hand pump at the kitchen sink), so that he could pursue what he believed was his destiny - to paint in a manner no one had seen before. Berg's oil “carvings” were not easy to achieve. If the paint was applied too quickly, it would crack after drying. The paint would take between 6 to 14 months to dry. Not only are Berg's paintings 3 dimensional, they are quite detailed. In the painting “Heaven on Earth” looking through the window of the house there is a painting hanging on the wall of a sailboat. Berg used a 3-haired brush to accomplish this detail. Berg described “Heaven on Earth”, (completed in 1963 after five years of paint layering), as “the masterpiece of his life's work”. He died in 1975. This most impressive work, purchased in 1973 for $2,300 ($13,000 in 2014 dollars!) has been generously donated to the Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society for their 2016 “30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction” which will raise important funding for Wisconsin historic preservation. In 1978 three of Adam Berg's works, including “Heaven on Earth” traveled throughout Wisconsin as part of the “Grass Roots Art: Wisconsin” exhibit. Thirty-seven years after that exhibit, the public will once again be able to see Berg's monumental “Heaven on Earth” displayed at the upcoming Wisconsin Antiques Dealers Association Show (aka WADA) February 6 & 7, 2015 at Waukesha Expo. WADA is providing the Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society with a free booth at the antiques show where volunteers will accept taxdeductible donations of antique and vintage items for the 2016 auction. Tax deductible receipts will be provided to each donor at the show. In addition, WADA has provided their fourth grant to the Friends of the Wisconsin Historical Society as founding & continuing sponsors of the “30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction”. The admissions charged at WADA's October and February antiques shows in Waukesha fund their grant and scholarship programs. See http://www.WisconsinAntiquesDealers.com to learn more. Carol Miller of Bailey's Honor Auction Service in Oconomowoc has once again volunteered to call the auction. You can follow her may auctions throughout the year at http://baileyshonor.com/ For questions about the 2014 "30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction" or to make a donation of an antique or vintage item, please contact Riene Wells at 262.363.4700, [email protected] or Debbie McArdle at 815.575.1272, [email protected] . To learn more about the FRIENDS of the Wisconsin Historical Society, visit http://www.friendswisconsinhistory.org/ “Heaven on Earth” is a modern-day “Peaceable Kingdom”, displaying everything good that is given to us, including a wedding! Volunteers will be on hand February 6 & 7 to accept tax-deductible antiques and collectibles for the “30th Star Benefit Antiques Auction”. Adam Berg's monumental 60” x 48” “Heaven on Earth” (completed in 1963) will be on public display for the first time in 37 years! Note even the frame is painted in layers of oil.
