MAY 2016
GREAT LVC GOLF OPPORTUNITIES DURING THE U.S. OPEN
With The 2016 U.S. Open is being held in Pittsburgh at Oakmont Country Club June 13 through 19.
Interest in golf at Longue Vue is very high and the club will be very busy that week. As noted in the
letter sent to all members in March, the Board of Governors will be allowing outside play Monday
through Friday of that week at a premium price. Morning shotguns and afternoon tee times are filling fast. Please make plans soon for that week in order to avoid disappointment.
As a reminder: Monday through Friday the club will have an 8:30 a.m. shotgun for all morning play. This shotgun, limited
to 108 golfers, will be open to members and their guests, as well as corporate groups. We will switch to tee times for
those afternoons, with times beginning at 1:30 off of both #1 and #8 tees. Tee times will end approximately 3:30 each
afternoon so our greens crew can prepare the course for the following day’s shotgun. The 1st tee will re-open on Friday
following the last group that has to cross from #18 to #1 and will be open for the remainder of the evening.
Members may bring 3 guests each day under our normal guest provisions. If you bring more than 3 guests on any day
from June 13 through 17, the 4th guest and beyond will be charged the package rate of $300 (includes green fee, cart
fee, gift, and lunch).
Saturday and Sunday play will return to normal play with the exception that tee times will begin at 7:00 with times from
8:00 – 10:00 being reserved for the SWAT. The times from 10:00 until approximately 10:15 will be reserved for the Ladies’ SWAT. Following the SWATs, times will be open for normal member play including any guests that a member may
wish to bring. The first 3 guests on either day of the weekend will be under normal provisions. The 4th guest and beyond
will be charged a rate of $200 (includes green fee, cart fee, and gift).
Don’t delay in making your plans as the Club will be busy during this week. We look forward to seeing you and your guests during this time. Please contact our Head Professional, Steve Antenucci at
412-793-2375 to make arrangements.
After May 13th and before June 1st cancellation penalties are: Guests – ½ rates
After June 1st or if your guests are a “no-show”, cancellation penalties are: Guests- full rates

THE VUE FROM THE GREENS
The golf course has continued to reap the rewards of the early/warm spring weather that we have
been experiencing. By my calculations, the course is looking and reacting about three weeks
ahead schedule when looking at growth, green-up and plant health that will set the foundation
towards the upcoming season.
April was an extremely busy month for the Greens Department with in-house/out-sourced
projects, aerification and maintaining the course. We started off the month with the fairway
expansion project on #8. The project widens the fairway on the left side (15-20 yds.) to expand the
landing zone while improving the chance for well stuck tee shots to hold the fairway. The entire project was completed
in-house by utilizing our fairway blend from nurseries and by reducing #5 approach (another course improvement). The
rough sod that was stripped and removed from #8 was used to address Poa and Bent populations in the intermediates to
improve uniformity. Remaining sod was used in the bail-out area to the left of #4 green form the massive tree removal
project over the winter.
Aerification week was conducted during the third week of the month under perfect weather. Our standard
5/8-inch core was pulled on 1.5 spacing on greens to remove as much material as possible. A ½ inch solid tine was used
to vent tees and approaches. All three surfaces also received a healthy dose of topdressing sand. Fairways were sliced
for the final time of the spring and all playing surfaces received our Spring fertility applications. While closed during Aerification week, cart path resurfacing and installation was completed from #1 green to #4 fairway. Work will begin to back
fill the edges over the first few weeks of May. Our tree contractor was on property during the first two days of the week to
give much needed attention to multiple trees throughout the property by removing the deadwood and selective limbing to
protect their health. Again, we couldn’t have asked for better weather and my hat is off to the staff for their efficiency and
work ethic to complete the process. No golfer is ever excited about Aerification, but I’m happy with the recovery results.
By pushing the week back this year, our recovery was reduced in timing drastically from the past allowing us to improve
playability during the early spring.
Heading into to May, we await the arrival of our seasonal H2B employees. This is the first year that I’ve handled
the process on my own while working with a lawyer from New York and although there has been plenty of headaches
and they are a month behind schedule, we have saved a bunch of money by not using our previous agency and I’m now
well prepared for the process moving forward. Our new AIT, Djorn Dunlap has started. Djorn comes to us from
Nebraska and has past work experience as an intern at Pikewood and Bellerive in St. Louis (Don’t worry he is a Bucs fan
from his days at Pikewood). Please welcome Djorn when you see him on the course.
May brings the start of the season; Opening SWAT, Spring Member-Guest, Willie McKay and Ladies Western
Team Matches highlight the month. The Opening SWAT will mark the start of the daily pin location system. Those that
have played in special events since my arrival are familiar with the pin sheets that were used to give exact hole locations
for that day. Starting this year, we will go to this format on a daily basis. Daily Location cards will be placed in your carts
and books of all 18 daily locations will be made available in the proshop for those that walk regularly. I’m excited to
implement this unique feature and we continue to improve the experience at Longue Vue. As the Opening SWAT
approaches, I plan to create a blog post outlining everything.
As always, check the blog (www.longuevuegreens.blogspot.com) to stay up to date on all the happenings both
on and off the course. Follow us on twitter (@lvcgreens) for daily updates on course conditions and tasks. It is truly
shaping up to be an exciting summer at the Vue and we look forward to seeing you on the course.

GOLF TIPS FROM THE PROS BY DEREK DEJIDAS , PGA
Are You a Linear or Radial Putter?
When I work with my students on their putting stroke, I almost always
group them into one of two styles based on how they use their hands
during the stroke, teaching them a different set of fundamentals accordingly. While there are exceptions to every rule of thumb, take
some time to review the tendencies of each putting style and try to determine which model you fall into. It will give you a better understanding of your putting stroke and help you play better golf.
Linear putters tend to…








Grip the putter more in the palm of the lead hand
Setup with most of their weight on their lead side
Position the ball more forward at address
Have significant forward shaft lean with the grip of the putter pointing towards their
lead hip
Use their hands and arms to swing the head of the putter straighter back and low to
the ground on the backswing and finish with the back of their lead hand facing the hole
Keep the face more square to the target line throughout the stroke
Putt better with a heel shafted putter
Examples: Phil Mickelson, Dave Stockton

Grip the putter more in the fingers of the lead hand
Setup with their weight more evenly distributed on both the lead and trail sides
Position the ball more centered at address
Have little forward shaft lean with the grip of the putter pointing towards their midsection
Use the turn of their upper body to swing the head of the putter on more of an arc back

Rotate the face open to closed relative to the target line during the stroke

TUESDAY/SATURDAY DIS COUNTED GUEST RATES ARE BACK IN 2016
The Golf Committee has noted that Tuesday and Saturday afternoons generally continue to be the most underutilized
times of the week for the golf course. To help generate more play at these times the committee is continuing the discounted Tuesday and Saturday afternoon rate. As a reminder, the discounted rate works as follows:
▪Tuesdays and Saturdays when there are no other scheduled events a member may bring guests after 2:00 at the rate
of $75 per guest.
▪The rate is inclusive of the green and cart fees and these foursomes may play as many holes as they can until dark.
▪The rate will only apply to the first three guests of the member brought on any given Tuesday or Saturday.
▪The member MUST be present in order to receive the discounted rate.
▪Members may choose to use their Be My Guest passes instead, if they so choose.
▪If you are interested in taking advantage of this great deal please make a tee time through the tee sheet after 2:00.
When you check in with the Pro Shop make sure you tell the attendants that you wish to use the Tuesday / Saturday
discount rate, rather than Be My Guest Passes.

LADIES’ 7 HOLERS PROGRAM—BEGINS THIS MONTH!
The hugely successful and very popular 7 Holers Program is returning this summer, starting in May. All are welcome to join the 7 Holers on Thursday evenings for a great time
growing your golf game with other women of Longue Vue. The 7 Holers provides a great
way to learn about the game of golf or to brush up on your skills in a fun and stress-free
format. The group will meet at the satellite practice range at 5:15 p.m. for a low pressure,
FREE golf clinic with Longue Vue’s Golf Pro, Steve Antenucci. After the clinic at 6
p.m. , we will set out to enjoy as many as seven holes of golf and put to practice what was
learned on the driving range. 7 Holers will be accompanied by a more experienced golfing
“mentor”. Mentors will serve as a resource to ensure everyone is comfortable on the
course, as well as to share information such as where to park a golf cart, etiquette on the
green, how to fix divots, and the all-important pace of play. Everyone is welcome to return
to the clubhouse to enjoy refreshments and/or dinner afterward on the Green Terrace.

SHARE THE JOY OF MEMBERSHIP AT YOUR CLUB
There have been so many major improvements made to the Club, we believe you would enjoy
sharing LVC with friends and family. Our golf course has never been in better condition with
significantly improved playing surfaces and spectacular panoramic views of the river. Off the
course, Longue Vue remains a treasured retreat with members enjoying a number of exciting
new initiatives, including the Club’s own wine society, custom “Dining with a Vue” dinner parties, and children programs. There has truly never been a better time for you to introduce someone to the joys of membership. If you have a prospective member in mind, please contact Emily
Ojerholm, Director of Membership Sales, at [email protected] or 412-793-2232, ext. 212. and she will be
happy to provide you with membership information as well as arranging visits to the Club.

THE VUE FROM VINEYARD AND TABLE
Greetings Everyone!
It’s starting to get busy around here so that means summer isn’t that far away. Everything
is green except for the trees, but that will happen anytime now. There are a lot of things
happening this month, not only on the golf course but in the clubhouse as well.
Over the past 2 months, I have added almost thirty new wines to our wine list and just
increased our wine by the glass selections to 13 wines. It will be 15 or 16 wines by the middle of May. I do
ask that, if you haven’t already, please ask for the Wine List IPad and take time to look at our selections as
well as the variety of wines that are in by the bottle as well. You will find some familiar names as well as
many new ones you may not have tried before. I invite everyone to ask for a sample taste of any wine by the
glass that you are curious about.
Starting Wednesday May 4th, we will start our Wine Down Wednesdays. All wines listed by the glass will be
half off that evening as well as every Wednesday evening through the summer. This is a great way to try our
wines as well.
Later this month on Friday, May 27th, we have the Nine Wine and Dine event. This is open to all and is a
great way to meet other couples on the golf course and then enjoy sampling complimentary wines with one of
our representatives in the Grill Room and finish off the evening with great conversation with someone you
may have just met over dinner. Reid Vogel will be our wine rep that evening sampling us on some great
wines I’m sure.
Enough about wine, let’s talk beer. The first Beer Club night was held on April 27 and we have 2 more in
May, Wednesday the 11th (Victory Brewing) and Wednesday the 25th(Green Flash Brewing). Each evening
there will be great food to enjoy with the reduced price beers we are drinking, as well as gifts from our
representatives. I am looking forward to having a beer or 3 at each Beer Club night myself.
This is the first year for the Beer Club and as with any new venture, we will be gauging interest and adapting
the program as we grow. As always, if you are enjoying dinner at the Club and would like to try one of the
featured beers, please ask your server and we will be happy to get it for you. Some of the beers introduced
at Beer Club will make their way onto our Janssen Room taps, even the wild card beers. Yes, you may see
PBR on tap in the clubhouse at some time this season.
Enough about adult beverages, let’s talk Member/Guest on Thursday the 19 th. This is a great way to kick off
the golf season with a friend then double date that evening for Comedy Night. The comedians we have
coming in are hilarious and I can promise even the most hard to “crack a smile” people will be entertained.
I have rambled enough, but our entire staff is excited about the upcoming season. We look forward to seeing
everyone enjoy themselves even more than last year at The Club.
Cheers and see you soon,
Tim

NEW! LVC BEER CLUB—ITS NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN IN THE FUN
The first ever LVC Beer Club has been created and we are very excited about this and look
forward to seeing participation grow. There are two meetings of the Beer Club in May:
Wednesday, May 11 - Victory Brewing
Wednesday. May 25 - Green Flash Brewing
There will be 4 drafts that rotate every 2 weeks, as well as 2 drafts that will be the mainstay for
the club; Spaten and Miller Lite. The 4 drafts that will be in rotation will include, but not be limited to, an IPA, Lager, seasonal beer, as well as a Wild Card beer that will be fun and usually
a blast from the past.
The only cost for the club is $20 cash payable to Jeremy. This is for cash
prizes during the season for regulars of the beer club for different
achievements. On Beer Club Nights only, the drafts will be $4.00 per draft
plus everyone will receive a sampler glass of each. There will also be food
set up to eat along with your beer festivities. Start time for each meeting will be 6 p.m. Cheers!
