MODERATOR
Leslie PERRIN
[email protected]
Leslie Perrin’s professional life has gone through two very different stages.
His first career was as a professional actor. After training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, he worked for 7
years in repertory and London theatres, also appearing in the BBC TV series ‘Glittering Prizes’ and in the film ‘The
Wicker Man’.
His experience of the world of business derives from the twelve years he spent as Managing Partner and Chairman
of international law firm, Osborne Clarke, based in the UK with offices in London, Bristol and Reading and, in an
overall international context, having operations in 18 cities across 11 countries, including Munich, Cologne and Palo
Alto, California.
When he was running Osborne Clarke, Legal Business, the legal trade magazine, described his people skills as
“legendary”. His work was recognised by several awards including Legal Business Managing Partner of the Year and
a place for Osborne Clarke in the Sunday Times Best Places to Work. He retired from active legal practice in 2006.
His area of legal practice area was litigation, largely for claimants/plaintiffs. One of his cases still holds the record
for a UK award of damages by a jury against an insured defendant. In other cases, he became recognised as one
of the originators of a form of class action in the UK. He remains interested in all issues around Access to Justice.
These days, Leslie is an accredited mediator, giving him challenging, enjoyable opportunities to get involved in the
resolution of disputes and to continue his involvement in litigation practice.
He is an affiliate member of the UK All Party Parliamentary Group for Corporate Governance, which gives him a
privileged position from which to build on his practical, working knowledge of the regulatory framework affecting
Corporate Governance issues and of what makes Company Boards work well (or less well).
He is a Non-Executive Director (and a member of the Audit Committees) of two UK companies in the DAS Legal
Expenses Insurance Group. In these roles he carries approval from the Financial Services Authority, which regulates all providers of financial services in the UK.
In recent times, he has developed his interest in the theory and (most of all) the practice of how business works
through involvement in Organisational Development Consultancy with clients of the Core Context Consultancy.
Pro bono, he chairs the board of a major private school.

Dr. Barbara BAARSMA
SEO Economic Research
Roetersstraat 29
NL-1018 WB Amsterdam
[email protected]
Barbara Baarsma completed her studies in 1993 cum laude at the Department of Economics and Econometrics
at the University of Amsterdam. From 1994 till 1999 she was PhD student at the University of Amsterdam. At the
same time she worked on several projects at SEO Amsterdam Economics.
In April 2000 she graduated on a thesis over the monetary valuation of environmental externalities (like noise
nuisance by airplanes around the Schiphol airport and the loss of environmental amenities in the IJmeer by building the new living area IJburg). After succeeding her thesis Barbara joined SEO Amsterdam Economics, first as
a senior researcher and since 2002 as head of the head of the Competition and Regulation Division. Currently
she is deputy director of SEO.
Barbara has extensive experience in the study of the functioning of legal services markets. She led projects in
which the liberalisation of the Dutch notaries was evaluated and in which the costs involved in obtaining a
patent on law was investigated. Moreover, she studied the effects of the monopoly position of lawyers on both
consumers (including SME firms) and competitors market. Her work influenced the Dutch policy debate via hearings in the Parliament, policy reports for both private and public parties, scientific and popular articles and presentations at (inter)national congresses.
