Greg Jones, KSHA President President’s Corner Hello everyone! I’m Greg Jones & I’m your 2016 KSHA President. For those of you that don’t know me, I have been in KSHA for 10-15 years including helping my daughter Brooke Rindt showing, working with everyone at LaMonte Stables, & I have spent many hours at the shows as a ring steward, gate man, running errands to make the shows run, but please don’t ask me to announce! I want to WELCOME all of you to the 2016 Show season. We started off with a full house at Lyons at the “Hairy Horse Show”, including 28 Membership with horse nominations. That is AWESOME! And in those Membership were several new members! We are so happy that you are joining our family. To everyone else that has joined, or rejoined after being out a year or 2, THANK YOU! It takes all of us to make this Association work. I am grateful for everyone that participates in the shows, helps to run the gates, set the trails course, and just generally help out where it is needed. Even the kids help out! That is why this “family” organization is so strong. We support each other, no matter what class you ride in or type of horse you show. We strive to keep it family oriented, so please remember that when you are at the shows & in public. T-Shirts! I am so excited about the t-shirts! It’s been years since we had KSHA shirts to proudly wear not only at the shows but everywhere. We need sponsors to help pay for the shirts. Any funds raised will go into the general account, which is where yearend awards come from. There’s lots of room on the back of those shirts, so lets’ fill it up! I hope you can come out & support the youth at the Junior KSHA Spring show on May 21 & 22 in Hutchinson. The funds raised go BACK to the kids in awards & Scholarships for the High School Seniors. Show your support & come enjoy a very fun atmosphere. I truly feel that KSHA is going to grow & the future looks bright! Youth Corner Just some photos of the Lyons Hairy Horse Show and our youth in Leadline & Walk/Whoa Aiden’s 1st horse show! Destiny’s 1st time at English riding! Waylon blowing Kisses to his Mom & the fans! ORDER YOUR KSHA T-SHIRT It has been a few years since KSHA had t-shirts. So this year the board is putting together an order. YOU can have your business, horses name, your name or a memorial be included on the BACK of the shirt by sponsoring it.!!! Pre Ordered shirts should be able to be picked up at the June Sunflower Classic (SR Show in Hutchinson June 25 and 26) PRE-ORDERS AND Sponsorship's are due by the JR Show May 21 and 22 in Hutchinson!!! PRE ORDERED T-Shirts $15, Name Sponsorship on back $20. T-Shirts will be Royal Blue with WHITE print. More questions? Contact Jasmine or Becky Order form is on page 11 of this newsletter. Youth Corner By Lauren August, Youth Corner Contributor Lead line is a great way to introduce small children to the rewarding world of horse showing. Everyone has been nervous to step into the show arena to perform. Since an adult is required to lead the horse, the extra pressure is taken off the child, allowing them to enjoy the ride. Safety is a huge issue that is remedied in this class. Of course, there is always risk involved, but when a handler is present, the likelihood of an accident is greatly reduced. Participants learn the format of a class before taking on full responsibility of controlling a horse. Forget what to do when the announcer calls for the line up? Not paying any attention whatsoever during the class? No problem, the trusty leader will guide through the remainder of the class as the kid sits atop the horse and takes the credit, plus some awesome prizes! After becoming acclimated to showing through lead line, walk-trot classes are an encouraged stepping stone before accelerating into cantering classes. In the meantime, as the little kids are getting bored with brushing horses and standing at the rail, saddle up and let them shine in lead line! APRIL 2016 NEWSLETTER PAGE 11 With the recent wildfires in Kansas, this seemed like a pretty appropriate article to share. Copied from Equus Magazine One hour to Evacuation……. An Emergency Evacuation Kit With just a few minutes of planning and Preparation, you can make sure you’re equipped to move your horses to safety in an emergency. Time is of the essence when you’re evacuating your horses in the face of a natural disaster or another emergency. If a fire, flood or hurricane threatens, you won’t have time to gather and organize all the equipment necessary for passage to safety. Add in a high level of anxiety—among both animals and people—and an emergency evacuation can become a nightmare. By planning ahead, however, you can ensure that you won’t needlessly waste time when dealing with an emergency. To help you prepare, we’ve canvassed various state and federal emergency management programs and compiled a list of suggestions for an equine emergency evacuation kit. Gather the items appropriate for your situation and place them in a single container that you can grab easily: A large plastic trash can, for instance, has plenty of storage space and can also be used to hold water during an actual evacuation. When you’re finished, store the kit in an out-of-the-way place that will be easy to access in an emergency. Then try to leave it largely untouched—if you “raid” it for items for routine use, you’ll risk coming up short in an actual emergency. In addition, it’s wise to revisit your kit every six months or so to replenish perishables, update paperwork and make sure batteries are charged. Documentation Place the following items in a folder, then seal it in a plastic zip-lock bag. • veterinary contact information • insurance contact information • proof of negative Coggins tests for each animal • documents that could help prove ownership, such as microchip information or brand registration • current photographs of each horse • detailed instructions for anyone who may need to care for your horses, including medication needs and important veterinary history • map of the local area with any emergency facilities highlighted Tack • leather or breakaway halters (one for each horse that would be evacuated, plus an extra) • cotton lead ropes (one for each horse that would be evacuated, plus an extra) Feed and Water * Hay nets that can be filled prior to evacuation * Enough feed for 3 to 7 days, stored in original bags that have been placed in large, plastic garbage bags * Water Buckets, Feed tubs or nose bags * A large plastic trash can with lid for storing water (fill it up before you evacuate) First Aid/health care • an equine first-aid kit, including elastic bandages, gauze squares, Betadine, scissors, wound salve or spray, thermometer and eyewash • leg wraps and bandages • fly spray • medications, along with dosing information that identifies recipients by name, color and markings • hoof pick, rasp and nippers for removing shoes • twitch Tools • flashlight • battery-operated radio • wire cutters • blankets • trash bags • pocketknife or “all-in-one” tool • duct tape • twine • heavy gloves • cattle/animal marking crayon (available through livestock supply catalogs) Along with preparing an emergency evacuation kit, it is a very good idea to make sure every horse in your care will load easily. Do some quick trial runs, and school these horses who tend to be hesitant or uncooperative in loading. The last thing you’ll need as danger approaches is a horse who refuses to get on a trailer. When the Colorado fires happened, people could not get their horses to load & had to LEAD them out of the canyons! Past fire trucks , sirens, smoke & flames. Editors Note: Trailer Tires – we all have the “I’ll fix it next week” theory, but next week may be when we need the trailer in an emergency. If at all possible, keep the tires in good, working condition. Fuel in Vehicle – Make sure to keep your truck at least 1/2 full. I have been trying to do a better job of keeping it fuller. And in the case of an emergency, you don’t’ want to have to fight the other “idiots” at the gas pump who are also trying to get out of the emergency area. Power goes out—If you loose electricity, what all will you NOT be able to do? Possibly get the garage door open to get your vehicle out, draw water if you are on a well, fuel stations can not pump gas without fuel, or charge up your phone. DON’T wait until it is too late to get out! Do it early, have a plan & be safe. Kansas Saddle Horse Association c/o Debbie Church 2230 S Hoover Rd. Newton, KS. 67114 Hi kids! I’m Back!!! Yes, Greg & company twisted my arm enough to help with KSHA again, & I volunteered to do the newsletters again. My life has settled into more of a routine. I won’t say normal, because the only normal thing that is normal at my house is the setting on my washing machine! The goal is to email the newsletter to members as much as possible. This is much faster & easier than paper copy, but those that don’t have computer access will have it mailed to them. But if you can receive it via email, that’s awesome. The newsletter will be on the webpage. So if you know someone that doesn’t have a computer, please share the newsletter with them, including people that don’t belong to KSHA, maybe they would like to join! I again will be taking suggestions for articles for the newsletter, just email me. While life changes, we all have to pull the strings to make such a great organization work. We had several new riders at the Lyons show & I hope several new members too. PLEASE make them all feel welcome to join our association. Also, if you know someone that hasn’t joined in the last couple of years, ask them why? It may simply be finances, it may be they aren’t showing this year, or they may have felt unwelcome or had a problem with something. Only by talking can we improve & bring back our awesome membership. As always: Debbie “Happy Trails to you, Until we meet again!” “No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the Saddle”
