Focus on Families - Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City
1 of 2,085 families served in 2007 news, stories and insights from ronald mcdonald house charities of kansas city — spring 2008 Focus on Families Summertime will be here before we know it. It’s a playful time for most. And, many kids love to go swimming. Unfortunately, accidents happen. In 2004, Anthony had an awful swimming accident. He was immediately flown to a nearby hospital and after three weeks, the doctors provided little hope for Anthony. Today, he’s making great progress…there is hope! Anthony turned five this spring. He is starting to say words, hold items and sit by himself with little support. As you can see from his picture, he has the greatest smile that easily warms your heart. Anthony’s parents had heard of Ronald McDonald House Charities before the accident but never dreamed they would need the House. Their children were born healthy and you never think a tragic accident will happen to your family. Anthony’s family has stayed at four different Houses since the accident and each time has had a good and supportive experience. “Each House has made us feel right at home and given us a place to stay while going through a tough time and taking away some of the stress.” Their stay at the Longfellow House has been their longest. Anthony’s mom expressed that “It’s amazing how the volunteers and staff can really make you feel at home.” She also wanted to share with supporters of Ronald McDonald House Charities, “The work that you do is wonderful and knowing that there are people still out there willing to lend a hand to the children and their families is comforting.” Like many other families staying at Ronald McDonald House, Anthony’s parents appreciate the help and comfort of knowing that they’re not alone as they go through the journey of their child’s recovery. www.rmhckc.org 816.842.8321 Thank you for your change! It’s amazing how fast a little change can add up to help others. Because of friends like you, in 2007, over $158,000 was collected from the charitable canisters located in 140 McDonald’s restaurants throughout the Kansas City area from Lawrence, KS to Marshall, MO to St. Joseph, MO to Ottawa, KS. Pocket change collected throughout the year benefits the medically fragile children and their families calling Ronald McDonald House Charities their “home away from home.” Next time you visit your favorite McDonald’s restaurant, please consider leaving your change…to make change. Heart of the House… Spring 2008 day our Houses and Family Room are a blessing of support to so many families who never imagined themselves experiencing a child’s illness or injury. We also know that the heart of our community is strong in its overwhelming support of Ronald McDonald House Charities as we provide a home away from home for literally thousands of families each year. For the children and families who stay at the Houses and Family Room, we are a caring community of a small staff team and a huge number of dedicated volunteers who work the front desk, prepare meals, and help with work group chores. Each time the door opens, this group of concerned people welcomes children and families into their supportive circle of care and compassion. During this spring and season of rebirth, we hope that it is in your heart to continue or start your journey of supporting RMHC to ensure that the Houses and Family Room will be there to help families through one of the toughest times of their lives. Ps: Since this is my last note as CEO, I wanted to mention that I’m thankful for the many memories we share. I will miss everyone that I have had the privilege to work with and lead during the past seven years as we have expanded our mission. It’s an awesome feeling to know that as a team we help so many families! Thank you for a successful and endearing journey! Eight Months Away From Home Imagine needing to call the Ronald McDonald House your “home” for eight months or more. Life as you know it changes drastically with the trauma of a child’s serious illness or injury. It greatly impacts your child’s world, and affects all involved including parents, siblings and extended families. We’re here to help lessen the burden. With the opening of the Longfellow House two years ago and its 12 new suites, we have been able to provide families with a place to stay for extended periods of time. These suites provide families with children undergoing organ transplants or chemotherapy a place to call home for the duration of their care. Even the most minor illness can prove to be life threatening to them. The suites provide a “homey” feeling and some comfort with their own kitchenette and family room. To date, we have served 71 families in the suites at the Longfellow House. On average, families stay in the suites 32 days and several families have stayed over 4 months. We’re thankful to have been able to get to know these families and serve them as they recover in their “home-away-from-home”! “To lift the hearts of kids and families from the hurt of today to the hope of tomorrow.” – RMHC Kansas City Vision Thank You, Lumber Liquidators, for the donation of new wood flooring in our 12 suites! carpet Malachi walks on the new entry se. Hou the of ds Frien by donated Families Touched by Friends Friends of the House have definitely impacted others through their commitment to helping the children and their families of RMHC. Over the holidays, meals were brought to the Longfellow House, filling the kitchen with wonderful smells and hearty food that the families enjoyed. The Friends opened a General Store in November for guests to visit and shop. The children have truly enjoyed spending their McBucks on toys, games, books and other fun donated items for themselves, siblings, parents and grandparents. The Friends of the House children want to participate also. Fun Friends is perfect for the younger members that want to help and make a difference too! In November, they made Thanksgiving Day bear gift bags using bears donated by Build-A-Bear Workshop. On Super Bowl Sunday, the Fun Friends made Valentine treats for the children staying at the Houses and Family Room. The gift bags and treats were enjoyed by the RMHC children and brought many smiles to their faces. Thank you, Friends of the House, for allocating funds for the installation of new entryway flooring in the Longfellow House. The new flooring will make it easier for our guests to use when getting around or moving into their “home-away-from-home.” Membership involvement is needed. If you would like to learn more about Friends of the House or to join, please visit our website at www.rmhckc.org. In support of Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City, Friends of the House attracts members to raise resources, broaden the volunteer base, and enhance awareness in the Kansas City community. 5 2007 Memorial Contributors Euginia and Wayne Albrecht United Church Women of Carroll County Marian L.
