A percentage of openings will be available during online registration.
All weeks will have openings during walk in registration.
You are restricted to a maximum of 2 weeks for the following programs:
Pre-K at Prospect Hill; Kaleidoscope; Summer Fun at Prospect Hill;
Summer Chill Zone Program
A waitlist will be made available beginning at Walk-In Registration for the possibility of
additional weeks.

REGISTRATION POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
General








All programs are offered to Waltham residents only, unless otherwise stated.
Before registering, check that the participant meets the age/date of birth/grade level qualifications.
Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until a program fills or begins.
The Recreation Office maintains a waitlist for sold out programs. Please call the office.
Each adult may register just one child, unless registering siblings.
A processing fee of $10.00 will be charged for any changes made to registrations.
Birth certificates and proof of residency is required for all first-time participants. Please submit these to the
Recreation Office within one week of registering. Documents can be faxed to the Recreation Office at
781 314-3482.
Children and adults with disabilities are encouraged to participate in our programs. Please let us know of any
special needs at the time of registration.
Cancellation Policies




Although we do not expect to cancel programs, we reserve the right to cancel due to insufficient enrollment,
space limitations, or instructor availability.
If a program is cancelled by the Recreation Dept., all participants will receive a Recreation Dept. credit.
Recreation Dept. credits can be applied to future programs, or toward the purchase of discount tickets.
We are unable to issue refunds.
Withdrawals




If a participant needs to withdraw due to injury or illness, a doctor’s note will be required and a Recreation
Department credit will be issued.
If a participant withdraws for any other reason, credits will be issued only if a program is full and we are able
to fill the opening with another participant. A Recreation Department credit will be issued.
Recreation Dept. credits can be applied to future programs or toward the purchase of discount tickets.
We are unable to issue refunds.
Online Registration



A limited percentage of program openings are reserved for online convenience.
If online registration is full, walk-in and mail-in registrations are still an option.
Online registrants are still required to submit a paper copy of our Waiver, Consent, and Release form to the
Recreation Office.

We have employed the services of Activenet.com for online registration.
Activenet.com is a secure site.
You must have a valid credit card for online registration. Activenet accepts Visa, MasterCard, and
American Express.
Charged transactions will appear on your statement as Activenet.com.
Please keep the confirmation email you receive from Activenet.com as your receipt.
Activenet.com will charge a processing fee of 6.5% per transaction, plus $0.50 per transaction, with a
minimum of $2.00 per transaction.
By registering for programs, registering parties agree to the above guidelines.
Any registration that does not comply with the above guidelines will be subject to cancellation. Activenet.com processing
fees will not be refunded. Only Recreation Department credit will be issued, we are unable to issue refunds.

Each Waltham resident may purchase six tickets per visit
AMC DISCOUNT MOVIE TICKETS
Save money by purchasing AMC Movie Theatre tickets in advance. Gold tickets never expire and are
valid from the first day of a new movie’s release. They are a great gift idea as well; everyone likes to go
to the movies! Check movie schedules at www.amctheatres.com. Cost is $8.25 per ticket.
EMBASSY THEATRE DISCOUNT MOVIE TICKETS
You don’t have to leave town to watch first-rate movies. The Embassy Theatre in downtown Waltham

2015 MASSACHUSETTS PARK PASS
The free pass entitles the bearer to free parking for one vehicle (excluding buses and vans) at over 50
facilities in the Massachusetts State Parks system that charge a day use parking fee. The one day pass
can be obtained at the Recreation Department. Reservation required securing a day pass.

PRE-K PROGRAM
AT PROSPECT HILL PARK
EXTENDED DAY OPTION:
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
Pre-K meets in a large, sunny room in the Prospect Hill
Recreation Building. We spend lots of time outdoors
each day.
For those who are having too much fun to leave, we
offer an Extended Day Option. The Extended Day
Program continues from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. It’s a
laid-back afternoon that includes a short movie break,
board games, coloring, crafts, an afternoon snack, and
indoor and outdoor free play.
Children can attend the Extended Day Program any
number of days they wish to stay. Parents can register
in advance, or on a day to day basis. Registration is
available on a walk-in basis only (no on-line extended
day registration), and must be completed and paid for
by 10:00 a.m. on the day the child wishes to stay.
Pre-K Morning Program
$90.00 per session
STAFF:
Extended Day Option
$11.00 per day
Instructors are college students with an interest in
early childhood education. Two instructors supervise
ten children. Staff attend a detailed orientation and are
CPR and First Aid certified. They are supervised by
full-time Recreation Staff members.
Boys and girls eligible to enter kindergarten in
September of 2015 can have great fun at our Pre-K
Summer Program.
Each session meets Monday through Friday. Eight
sessions are offered; children can attend a maximum
of two sessions.
MORNING PROGRAM:
Our morning program begins at 9:00 a.m. and
dismisses at 1:00 p.m. The morning begins with
indoor free play and a craft project. We then head
outside for a morning snack and a trip to the
playground. Group sports and games follow. We will
also practice for our group presentation on Friday.
WHAT TO BRING:
Please apply sunscreen prior to arrival. Send
sunscreen marked with your child’s name. Instructors
will help reapply after lunch.
Children should wear comfortable play clothes and
sneakers. Wear or bring a swimsuit, towel, and slip-on
shoes for the walk to the pool.
Eating lunch together is really fun! Pre-K is a
nut-free environment, so please leave all foods
containing any kind of nuts at home.
Please pack a complete change of clothes, just in
case!
We visit the pool after lunch. It is easiest if children
wear their swimsuits to Pre-K. They will need
slip-ons or flip-flops for the walk to the pool.
Bring a lunch and a drink as well as a separately
bagged morning snack. Those who will be staying for
Extended Day will need an afternoon snack as well.

is most appropriate for their child:

SUMMER FUN
AT PROSPECT HILL PARK
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
RAINY DAYS:
Summer Fun at Prospect Hill consists of eight
one- week sessions beginning June 29. You can
register for a maximum of two sessions. Additional
sessions may be possible if space becomes available
through a wait list. The program begins each day at
9:00 a.m. and ends at 4:00 p.m., Monday through
Friday.
On those unpleasant wet days, Summer Fun travels
across the street to the Veterans Memorial Rink for
hours of games, crafts, special events, sports, movies
and more.
PICK UP AND DROP OFF:
Vehicles are restricted to the lower parking lot.
Parents/Guardians must walk their child to their group
each morning and pick them up from their group each
afternoon.
Each Waltham child, entering grades one to six in
September, will enjoy hours of sports, swimming,
hiking, arts and crafts, games, nature activities, and
a variety of special events. Weekly themes assist in
providing special events. Each week, 75 participants
are accepted. A maximum of seven participants are
assigned to one staff member.
Summer Fun
Participants will not be released from their group
without a parent/guardian. If someone else will be
picking up your child, a note from the parent must be
brought in that morning.

STAFF:
WHAT TO BRING:
Caring, enthusiastic individuals staff Summer Fun at
Prospect Hill. Many of them are in college students
studying education. Our staff includes Kim Scott
(Recreation Supervisor), an Assistant Director, LEAP
Director, Lifeguards, and 12 Program Instructors.
Everyone must complete staff training and be
First Aid/CPR certified.
Each day your child will need a swimsuit and towel
(we swim two times each day), a lunch with their name
on it and a snack packed separately; sunscreen and
bug spray. Everyone must wear sneakers, no sandals
or open toe shoes.
MEDICAL NEEDS/SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS:
Your child’s belongings (clothes, backpack, socks,
water bottles, lunch, etc.) should be clearly marked.
A nut free lunch table is available for those interested.
Our staff will try to meet the needs of all participants.
If your child requires special accommodations, please

contact the Recreation Office to further discuss your
child’s needs. NOTE: If your child will be receiving

TRANSPORTATION:
If transportation is needed for your child to participate
in the Summer Fun program, it can be arranged. A
local transportation service or a City of Waltham
vehicle provides a $15.00 (one way) or a $25.00
(round trip) per week. All transportation arrangements
must be made with the Recreation Department prior to
May 1.

KALEIDOSCOPE
PROGRAM INFORMATION:
ACITIVITIES:
Girls and boys who will enter grades one through six in
September can attend Kaleidoscope. The program is
held at the Fitzgerald Elementary School and Msgr.
McCabe Playground, located at 90 Charlotte Road.
Get ready for arts and crafts, board games, card
games, and games in the gym. Kids will play at the
playground every day! Each day includes plenty of
Kid’s Choice time. You can choose extra crafts, create
with building toys, color, or jump rope.

Kaleidoscope
$120.00 per session
We will play at the Spray Park on Monday, Tuesday,
Thursday and Friday afternoons. Bring a pair of slip-on
shoes for the walk to the spray park. It is easiest for all
if children wear their swimsuits to Kaleidoscope.
Changing facilities are limited, so children will wear
their swimsuits home. Don’t forget your towel.
HOURS OF OPERATION:
Kaleidoscope meets Monday through Friday, from
9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
WHAT TO BRING:
Choose one or two sessions. If you would like
additional weeks, put your name on our waitlist. We’ll
call you if space becomes available.
Apply sunscreen before arrival.
Bring a water bottle with your name on it.
Bring a healthy morning snack, and a lunch. We don’t
refrigerate lunches, so pack yours with a cold pack.

KID’S DAY OUT WEDNESDAYS:
The program will be under the direction of
Kara Greeley and Adam Dallaire, year-round, full time,
Recreation Supervisors. Seven college-aged staff
members will assist. Instructor ratio is 1:7 maximum.
Wednesdays of full weeks will be Kid’s Day Out. We
will enjoy an adventure aboard a yellow school bus.
Trip reminders and details will be sent home on
Monday. See details below.

SUMMER CHILL ZONE
PROGRAM INFORMATION: Summer Chill Zone
is open to Waltham residents entering grades
seven, eight and nine. Each session meets
Monday through Thursday, 9:00 a.m.-.4:00 p.m.
with drop-off and pick-up at the Waltham
Community Center, 510 Moody St. Seven
sessions are offered; youth can attend a
maximum of two sessions and may put their name
on a waitlist for additional sessions.
STAFF: This program is supervised directly by
Recreation Supervisor Kathy Gross and two
additional seasonal staff members.
TRANSPORTATION: Staff and participants will
be getting to and from trips via one of the
following modes of transportation: City of Waltham
trolley, van, bus, walking.
WHAT TO BRING: Comfortable clothing,
Sneakers (swimsuit, and a towel on pool days).
We recommend always bringing a lunch, water
and snacks. On certain occasions you may opt to
purchase lunch.

FREE FRIDAYS at the Chill Zone is a program for
Waltham youth entering grades 7-9. During the
summer, The Chill Zone is open for day time hours on
the above dates and times. The Chill Zone offers great
opportunities for socialization and physical fitness.
Activities may include, but are not limited to: free play
in the gym, indoor rock climbing, games and video
games and art projects. We will walk to Lizzy’s Ice
Cream each afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Please bring
money for this afternoon trip.
There is no cost for this program, but you must register
and be a current Chill Zone member. Space is limited.

TOP SECRET SCIENCE
Entering grades one through five
Each day the kids will explore up to 20 weird and wacky hands-on science
experiments and will make and take home at least 10 different projects. The scientists
are fast paced and funny and your kids will be thoroughly entertained (they will even
learn some interesting things too). We will explore weird motions and flying things, air
and water pressure; crazy chemistry, light and sound, science magic, electricity,
magnets, astronomy and more. Be prepared for lots of fun stuff. Please bring a snack,
lunch and water each day.

We know you love Legos and can create incredible Lego worlds, now it’s time to bring
those worlds to life in Lego Stop-Motion Animated Flix! We provide the Legos, and you
provide your imagination. Students will create a Lego set with Lego characters for a
movie they storyboard, write, shoot, and voice-over in age-appropriate groups. *All flix
downloadable within a month after program ends.

GARDEN EXPLORERS
Entering grades one through four
New for 2015 – a FIVE Day program. Spend a week on the farm in the summer! Play
farm games, create eco-art, explore woodlands near the farm fields, and learn about
different vegetables that grow on the farm. We will tend to our Learning Garden by
weeding, watering, and harvesting. Each session will end with everyone helping to
prepare a delicious and nutritious, farm-fresh snack in our Learning Garden’s solar
powered kitchen. Wear appropriate clothing to play outdoors. Bring a refillable water
bottle, a (nut-free) lunch and sunscreen. This program takes place at Waltham
Community Fields on Beaver St.

FARMER FOR A WEEK
Entering Grades five through eight
New for 2015-- a FIVE Day program for young farmers! Spend a week on the farm in the
summer, learning about the natural sciences and developing your agriculture and culinary
skills! Young farmers will learn about all stages of the food system, from growing their own
food to caring for chickens, and preparing healthy snacks each day in our solar powered
kitchen. We'll touch on a range of skills such as math, science, writing, group cooperation and
more!

There will be plenty of kid bop happening at this program of music, movement, and dance.
Kindergarten teacher Kerrie Blanchard and staff will teach the importance of stretching and
exercise and introduce the basics of beginning dance. We’ll have fun doing the hokey pokey,
macarana, and line dancing. We’ll visit the playground and water spray park . Wear play

DRAMA
Entering grades four through twelve
There is an actor in all of us, so come help us put on a show! Skills covered will include body
movement, oral interpretation, performance and set design. Each session ends with a short
drama production performed by program participants. This program is held at MacArthur
Elementary School located at 494 Lincoln St. The workshop Director is Stephanie Mavrides of
International Dance. Participants should wear appropriate clothing for activity. Bring a bag
lunch and a drink.

Many dance styles and techniques will be introduced during this week long program. Included:
jazz, tap, modern, hip-hop, musical, ballet and theatre styles, etc. This week’s session will
culminate in a mini dance performance. The workshop Director is Stephanie Mavrides of

ART ADVENTURES
Grades one through three, and grades three through six
Come join us this summer ready to engage your creativity! Six sessions will be offered for
varying age groups. Each day will highlight 3-5 individual projects along with free time to work
on items that appeal to the "artist" in all of us. For our older artists, we will be doing more
challenging projects. No specific art skills required, beginners to advanced participants are
encouraged to register. This program offers an opportunity for self expression rather than skill
development. Breaks will also be taken during the day for fun physical activities and games
both inside and out. Please send your child with a morning snack, lunch, water and sneakers
for outdoor play. *Participants are restricted to one session, and may place their name on the
wait list to sign up for a 2nd session if space allows.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Entering grades three through nine
This program will include beginning and intermediate skill development, offensive /defensive
tactics and small game play. Our approach to learning will include keeping the “fun” in
fundamentals while at the same time challenging the participant to learn how to compete and
enjoy the game of basketball. Individual offensive and defensive skills as well as ball handling,
shooting, passing, and rebounding will be emphasized along with team play. The staff will
consist of Waltham High School Coaches who will be assisted by present and past basketball
players from the high school. Bring a refillable water bottle, lunch and a morning snack.

CHEERLEADING
Entering grades one through six
We will instruct young athletes in the essential skills to lead the crowd and support the home
team. Each participant will learn cheers, proper hand/body movements and jumping techniques. Participants will learn the basic fundamentals to develop better cheerleading
skills. Instruction will focus on drills to improve skill level in motions, jumps, stunting, dance
and spirit. On each day, a rotating series of instruction and drills will be done to improve athletic ability. All of the drills incorporated at the program will be adjusted to the various age
groups. There will be a focus on fun while each cheerleader learns important life skills such
as teambuilding and leadership. The week concludes with a choreographed performance.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONS
SPORTS JAM
Play, play, and play some more...the ultimate multi-sport program! Baseball, basketball, and soccer will
be core sports in which some skills will be emphasized. But that's not all. Other sports mixed in include
flag football, volleyball, badminton, dodgeball, disc golf, ultimate frisbee, whiffle ball, and kick ball.
Unique games such as shark attack and safari will also be played. Program is coed, and every
participant receives a t-shirt, and certificate of achievement.
KIDDIE CAT JAM
Thundercat Sports mini version of our popular Sports Jam! Soccer will be a core sport played everyday
in which basic skills will be emphasized. Other sports include t-ball, basketball, softee hockey, balloon
ball, and kick ball. Games and other activities sprinkled in include finding Nemo, cartoon tag, shark
attack, thunder relays, Kiddie Cat Olympics, and more. Theme days, including Red Sox Day and Friday
Fun Day, add to the excitement creating a non-competitive positive sports experience your child will
enjoy. Emphasis will be on basic skills, developing hand eye coordination, teamwork, and
FUN! Program is coed, and every participant receives a t-shirt.
SPORTS COMBO
Thundercat Sports combo program is designed to give young athletes a fun learning experience in two
sports. Primary sport will be the focus of skill building activities and secondary sport will be more recreational adding to the experience. Unique games and activities will be mixed in creating a fun atmosphere. The program culminates with tournament day! Program is coed, and every participant receives

Skyhawks programs are successful in delivering high quality sports programs to children in a
non-competitive and recreational setting. The curriculum is designed to allow for maximum

Join Waltham High (Boys and Girls) Coaching staff, for six weeks of street
hockey skills. Each session will consist of 25 minutes of stickhandling and 25
