CARS of WI Member Profile: Rocki Top Auto
The CARS of Wisconsin Member Profile in this issue will
feature Rocki Top Auto. Their yard is located at W3095
Walrath Rd in Glen Flora, WI 54526.
This yard is owned by Jacob Nawrocki and Katy Joles.
Website is www.rockitopauto.com
Email is [email protected].
Phone number is 715-322-5774
Fax is 715-322-5775.
The yard has been a family run business for over 25 years
and they currently have 4 employees.
Specializing mainly in Mercedes but do a little of everything
and many trucks.
Katy said they are on roughly twenty acres of land with a
large shop and yard. They process about 200 cars a year
and are working on growing that number if they can find
decent vehicles and staff.
Dedication, hard work, knowledge and understanding the vehicles they processes is what makes their business a success.
They have been working on a tire shredder. It works and
they are doing a little tweaking to get it perfect. Katy said
they are looking to expand by adding two or three more
employees. Looking for good help is a challenge that is
hindering growth.
Their employees are one of the best part of their business.
Katy said she did not know how much CARS has helped her
company but if CARS could find a way to get better employees that might help there company become more successful.
Note from CARS of WI: Remember that scholarships available
to all CARS members for students that would be interested in
going to a tech school that offers classes about recycling and business. Many of your children would be interested in the recycling
industry if they knew about the importance of the industry.

Howdy and happy spring! The winter
hasn’t been too harsh but it’s still nice
to see the days get longer, to smell the
grass growing, to hear the happy birdsong drifting through the air. Of course,
it’s also nice that we can grill out now
without our long johns on too!
As per usual we are working hard to
keep CARS working for you;
The Warranty program is working better than ever. If you are interested in offering extended warranties on the parts
you sell, don’t hesitate to get in touch
with the Warranty Board of Directors
or Dean Bellin. They can get you set
up in no time.
Dean Bellin and I recently attended the
annual NFIB (National Federation of
Independent Business) Business Day in
Madison on behalf of CARS. It was a
very interesting event with a stellar lineup of speakers including; KT McFarland,
Ed Goeas, Brad Schimmel, and topped
off by John Stossel at the end of the day.
During our lunch we had the privilege
of hearing the new head coach for the
UW Badgers football team, Paul Chryst,
and the highlight was having the honor
of hearing Governor Scott Walker. It was
a day of networking and getting a feel
for the political atmosphere for the future of business. I would highly recommend this event for anyone interested
in attending, whether you are a member of NFIB or not. You can find more
information on state NFIB events and
happenings at www.NFIB.com.

Our legislative team continues to guard
our industry interests. There is a brief
update following in this newsletter and
more to come. Stay tuned, we are excited to start a new journey soon.
Sandy Dumke and the convention committee are going all out this year for our
Upper Midwest Convention, to be held
in Waupaca, WI in May. There are some
great supervised programs for children
so parents can take a break. They also
have some treats in store for all the
awesome Moms. We sincerely hope
that you are all planning to attend and
look forward to providing you with a
weekend full of useful information,
comradery, food and sprits, fun times,
and family. Look in this issue and your
mailbox for more information on how
to register. You can also find a link to
the convention at our website www.
CarsofWI.com. Hope to see you there!
As you can see there are many irons
in the fire, and a lot of irons in waiting,
but we are never too busy to hear from
you, our members. We encourage you
to reach out to your board members
and perhaps even consider volunteering yourself. There is always room for
extra help; in addition, committees
don’t require you to be on the board of
directors and are a great way to learn a
little more about what goes on within
your organization.
Looking forward to seeing you all soon!
In the meantime, enjoy all of your wonderful blessings!

As most of you know, CARS of WI lifetime member Bob
Hoffman passed away last October. Bob was a huge contributor to the development and success of CARS and helped
the association become, and stay, the success it is today. His
selfless contributions and his contagious smile will be greatly
missed but his memory and legacy will live on within CARS.
To honor that legacy, CARS has set up a scholarship fund

the event. We hope you will join us. More information can

We have begun organizing an event that we hope will become a yearly tradition, The Bob Hoffman Memorial Golf

a Dixon Challenge with prizes for closest to the pin, and
a Hole In-One contest also sponsored by DIXON GOLF,

A Great Community Cause
That’s for the Dogs
Amelia Rademacher has been whipping up some crafts
and selling like crazy to help her local Shawano County
Humane Society.
You may have seen her at CARS events selling her cool
rubber band jewelry. Since then she has developed her
product line to include knick knacks, and cool little coin
purses and handbags. Through the process of product
development she has been using her monies earned to
purchase needed materials and supplies to donate to
the shelter.
With the proceeds Amelia was able to make 12 dog
beds, more chew toys than she could count, and add
some needed supplies. When asked why she wanted
to help her local shelter, she replied, “Because making
the jewelry is fun, and I get to help out the creatures
that I love.”
Amelia and her brother Aiden are hoping to make their
visits weekly to help care for the animals along with
Amelia continuing to look for new outlets to help raise
funds. She also asked for us to let you all know that
she will have lots of inventory for our Upper Midwest
Convention, just in case anyone is in need of some
bling.
You can also visit her Facebook page www.facebook.

Legislative Update
By Lor’ell Rademacher
All in all it has been a quiet year for our legislative committee which has allowed us the wonderful opportunity to seriously consider what we really want to achieve legislatively
and how we can get there.
Currently we have a draft in progress that we hope will
help us bring some accountability to unlicensed and under
licensed dealers. Of course a draft is a long way from a law
but we are ready for the challenge of the process.
On March 18th we will be having our very first CARS Lobby
Day in Madison. This is our first step in bringing a better
understanding to our representatives and we are looking forward to the adventure. Watch future newsletters for more
information on the event and how you can be involved in
the future.

I would like to remind everyone that our legislative committee is here working for you. We would like to hear about
challenges you face with regulations and restrictions in your
communities. You can contact anyone on the Legislative
Committee with information or questions.

Tell us about the Company
(the product you supply to our salvage industry):
Behr is a full service processing company. We provide the industry with a variety of finished products to supply steel mills
and other manufacturers, including: finished shred, foundry
steel, prepared plate and structural, heavy melt, MST #1 cast
iron and more more.
Number of Employees:
Around 400 company-wide
Company History:
Joseph Behr and Sons, Inc., a recycling company, was founded in 1906. It began in Rockford, Illinois with a capitalization
of $30,000.
Joseph Behr, the company’s founder, immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1902. A year later his wife, Celia,
with three children-twins (one boy, one girl) and a baby boyboarded a vessel to join him. Sadly, measles claimed the lives
of the twins during the voyage. Only Isadore, the baby boy,
arrived with his mother. Seven more children were born in
the U.S. So many mouths to feed necessitated a strong will
for economic achievement!
Joseph began his American career based from Chicago’s
famed Maxwell Street, pedaling wares from a horse and
wagon. He traveled through the countryside selling his produce, eventually settling in Rockford. (Family lore states
“that’s where the horse died.”)
The family business started by bottling ammonia, vinegar
and bluing. These products soon gave way to scrap iron,
metals, rags, paper and glass (cullet). Eventually, the scrap
recycling business emerged as their focus.
The family then followed a pattern that was typical of that
era-Isadore, the oldest son, quit school after the sixth grade,
joined the firm and went to work to help support the family.
He became president while still in his teens. After graduating
from high school, Phillip Behr, the next oldest, joined his father and brother in the business. Phil succeeded as president
after Isadore’s untimely death in 1958. Modest success provided an income that afforded a college education for the
April/May 2015
19
six younger children. Isadore’s son, Richard, joined the firm
full-time in 1956 and became the company’s third president
in 1964. In 2008, Richard moved to Chairman of the Board
and William Bremner, the first non-family member, assumed
the presidency.
Over the years, Behr had expanded to 16 operating facilities, located in 3 different states, each with a different name.
In 2011, to make it easier for the marketplace to recognize
that all of our separate operations were those of one company, with one mission, Behr changed all locations’ names
to BEHR IRON & METAL. Along with the new name, a
slogan was added-”Recycling Since 1906”-as a reminder that
recycling is at the core of everything we do for our customers, and has been, for longer than almost any other company
in our industry.
Something of Interest:
Behr operates 3 auto shredders that can produce a combined 300+ ton of shred per hour which is the equivalent of
200+ full size automobiles shredded!
