Exciting News at the Waterpark
Things at the waterpark are heating up for this spring
and summer. We are in the process of applying for some
grants to help us install a new play surface at the toddler
park. This should not only be more aesthetically pleasing, but it will also reduce the amount of gravel that gets
tracked over to the waterpark itself. We are also hoping to replace some of the timbers around the park that
are deteriorating. This will make the park a little nicer
as well.
These projects are contingent on our receiving the
grants that we have applied for, and we should know
the results of these applications sometime in early 2012.
We will update the community on the outcomes as well
as potential dates and times for the construction to take
place.
Overall we are planning to make some incremental
improvements this coming spring and summer to get
the park looking its best. We hope that these improvements will make the park a safer and more usable centre
of our community.

Father Lacombe
Care Centre
Expanding
to serve more Calgary seniors
Overlooking beautiful Fish Creek, the Father Lacombe
Care Centre (FLCC) has long been at capacity to provide
compassionate and holistic care to seniors in a comfortable home environment.
Plans are now underway to more than double the capacity at FLCC, from 114 to 274 beds, with the construction of a new 160-bed supportive living and long term
care centre across the road from the existing centre. As
a result of aging Baby Boomers and longer life expectancies, the need for continuing care beds is urgent. The
Alberta government predicts an additional 800 to 1,000
continuing care beds are needed every year to meet the
growing demand.
The access road of 146 Avenue SE off Bannister Road
was rebuilt last fall and it is expected construction will
begin this spring on the new centre, with a grand opening in 2013. The provincial government contributed
$16.5 million toward the project and another $15 million has been raised fro other sources. The fundraising
goal for 2012 is $5 million.
Owned and operated by the Sisters of Providence since
1909, FLCC is Alberta’s oldest non-profit, faith-based
care centre, welcoming people of all faiths and cultures.

CITY OF CALGARY
ROAD CONDITIONS APP
The City released the City of Calgary Road Conditions
App for Blackberry and Android users. The app was
first released for iPhone in December, and has had over
14,000 downloads to date.
The Road Conditions app is designed to help Calgarians
stay informed on the status of city-wide Snow Route
parking bans. Users can also check out City traffic cameras for images of road conditions on key intersections
and receive general updates on driving conditions in
Calgary. Calgarians who do not have smartphones, but
would like to stay informed about the status of Snow
Route parking bans can sign up for email notifications
at Calgary.ca/snow or call 3-1-1 and listen to the automated message.
With the snowfall expected this weekend, we encourage you to download the app by visiting calgary.ca/mobileapps, the Android Market or Blackberry App World.
SPAYING OR NEUTERING YOUR
PET: BENEFITS AND BEYOND
When you choose to own a cat or a dog, you are making a commitment to care for that animal for the duration of their life. Proper care for your cat or dog includes
not only providing food, shelter and exercise, but also
licensing your pet and acting as a responsible pet owner
by spaying or neutering your cat or dog.
• Research has shown that spaying or neutering cats and
dogs has benefits for the pet, the owner and the community. For example, spaying or neutering:
• Reduces or eliminates disease, infection and cancer of
the reproductive system, increasing the likelihood that
your pet will enjoy good health and a longer life.
• Reduces pet overpopulation and the thousands of
homeless and unwanted animals that end up in rescue
organizations and shelters every year.
• Eliminates crying, howling, nervous pacing and frantic
attempts to get out and find a mate.
• Reduces or eliminates inappropriate spraying in males
and heat cycles in females.
• Results in more social and affectionate pets that are
calmer and more content to stay at home.
Since cats and dogs reach sexual maturity at approximately six months of age, it is recommended that pets
are spayed or neutered prior to this age. Consult your
veterinarian to discuss what the optimal timing is for
your pet.
Two assistance programs are available in Calgary. The
City of Calgary Animal & Bylaw Services operates the No
Cost/Spay Neuter program which provides free spaying
or neutering of cats and dogs owned by low income
Calgarians. The MEOW Foundation offers the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) to help low income cat
owners with the cost of spay and neuter surgeries.
By spaying or neutering your pets, you help to ensure
that all animals are wanted and have a home.
For more information about the No Cost Spay/Neuter
program, visit calgary.ca/animalservices or call 3-1-1.

“I CAN MAKE IT HAPPEN”
History abounds with tales of experts who were convinced that the
ideas, plans, and projects of others could never be achieved. However,
accomplishment came to those who said, “I can make it happen.”
The Italian sculptor Agostino d’Antonio worked diligently on a large
piece of marble. Unable to produce his desired masterpiece, he lamented, “I can do nothing with it.” Other sculptors also worked this
difficult piece of marble, but to no avail. Michelangelo discovered
the stone and visualized the possibilities in it. His “I-can-make-ithappen” attitude resulted in one of the world’s masterpieces - David.
The experts of Spain concluded that Columbus’s plans to discover a
new and shorter route to the West Indies was virtually impossible.
Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand ignored the report of the experts.
“I can make it happen,” Columbus persisted. And he did. Everyone
knew the world was flat, but not Columbus. The Nina, the Pinta, the
Santa Maria, along with Columbus and his small band of followers,
sailed to “impossible” new lands and thriving resources.
Thomas Alva Edison discouraged his friend, Henry Ford, from pursuing his fledgling idea of a motorcar. Convinced of the worthlessness
of the idea, Edison invited Ford to come and work for him. Ford remained committed and tirelessly pursued his dream. Although his
first attempt resulted in a vehicle without reverse gear, Henry Ford
knew he could make it happen. And, of course, he did.
“Forget it,” the experts advised Madame Curie. They agreed radium
was a scientifically impossible idea. However, Marie Curie insisted, “I
can make it happen.”
Orville and Wilbur Wright: Journalists, friends, and family laughed at
the idea of an airplane. “What a silly and insane way to spend money.
Leave flying to the birds,” they jeered. “Sorry,” the Wright brothers responded. “We have a dream, and we can make it happen.” As a result,
a place called Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, became the setting for the
launching of their “ridiculous” idea.

DO I REALLY NEED TO STRETCH?
by Dr. Alma Nenshi, DC
Stretching is a necessary the part of your workout regimen that many unfortunately tend to skip. Some say it
is because of lack of time, impatience or a feeling that
stretching is “pointless.” However it is important that our
joints are able to move in various directions with a certain degree of freedom. As our bodies age, we become
stiffer and lose the flexibility we had when we were
young. Chances are unless you’re a dancer or a gymnast,
you’ll have lost that fluid flexibility you had as a child
even in your twenties. However, it is never too late to
regain enough flexibility to remain youthful and limber
by training through stretching. Proper stretching allows
us to continue doing our daily tasks into old age, such as
reaching that high shelf, bending to pick up a dropped
object, or accessing that hidden switch behind an
awkward kitchen cabinet.
One reason it’s really important to stretch before working
out is that we are likely to use muscles and tendons that
are normally inactive. Without flexibility to those muscles,
the risk of injury or of tearing those muscles and tendons
when used is higher. If stretching is done correctly before
working out, it’s good prevention against injury, and can
be used to treat injuries as well. Finally, when done properly, stretching simply feels good. It can be a great way to
gently start the day or to wind down after work.
Preparing the body for exercise by warming up the muscles by stretching is easy and need not take up much of

Your Voice Is Being Heard!
Macleod Trail/22X Intersection
Thanks to the efforts of our local political representatives, plans are in place to begin construction on expansion of the intersection of Macleod Trail and Highway
22X. However, the current plans for expansion would
change the current road system to close off east-bound
access from Shawville Boulevard onto Highway 22X. The
plans also suggest that there will also be no east-bound
access to Highway 22X from 6th Street, either. More information can be found at http://www.transportation.
alberta.ca/stmacgp.htm.
There are serious concerns with this plan. For anyone
who has driven along Shawville Boulevard recently,
whether it be for transit, shopping, dining, or attending
a hockey game at South Fish Creek, you know how congested that route already is. Under the proposed plan,
anyone trying to exit the South Shawnessy commercial
corridor will only be able to do so via 162 Avenue, an
already busy intersection. Forcing all traffic into this intersection will negatively affect every neighborhood in
South Calgary.
If you disagree with that plan, and want the Province
to design a plan that does allow for better access from
the south end of Shawville Boulevard, please take some
time to contact your political representatives and other
involved parties and let them know. The key message
is “Expand the planned access for the south end of
Shawville Boulevard”. Whether it be by phone, e-mail,
letter, facebook, twitter, postcard, fax or telegram, we

DO I REALLY NEED TO STRETCH?
CONT’D FROM PG11
your time. This will increase the blood flow to your muscles and loosen them up allowing you to exercise without having to worry about injury or being overly sore the
next day. Simply warm up the various muscle groups with
slow stretches of the joints towards the end of their range
of motion; this should cause the feeling of a gentle “pull”
being felt in the muscles. Hold the position for up to half
a minute and then alternate side or muscle groups. Not
only does stretching prevent injury, but it also improves
the mechanical efficiency of your body. Stretching prior
to exercise means the muscles are stretched and warmed
up, allowing them to undergo the full range of motion
with less effort when exercising – this means the body’s
overall performance is improved.
Other added benefits to stretching include improved
circulation to the muscles and joints, alleviating the
pains felt post-workout, and stretching can also help to
improve your posture. If you find at the end of the day
stiff and achy from sitting at a desk all day – try stretching. You might find that you’ll feel instantly better. Regular stretching in your shoulders and neck may help you
to maintain a better posture. As a result, this may help
to prevent the onset of lower back pain, neck pain and
headaches.

HERBS - BASIL
Herbs are valued in the kitchen for their aromatic essential oils and are primarily used to accent and enhance the flavour of foods. It’s hard to imagine an Italian tomato sauce without oregano, for example, even though the
dominant flavour is tomato. In some dishes, though, the herb is the main
ingredient, such as basil is in an Italian pesto.
Fresh hothouse basil is available all year round, but you might want to try
your hand at growing your own in the summer months.
CULINARY FILE: herbs
Basil leaves can be used whole or chopped. Wash them and dry them thoroughly before use. When cut with a knife, the leaves tend to discolour, so
use them quickly, or in cooked dishes. Tear the leaves by hand for use in
uncooked dishes.
Fresh basil will keep successfully for 3-4 days if wrapped in damp paper
towels, then plastic wrap, and refrigerated. To freeze, snip the leaves into
small pieces and freeze in plastic bags. To dry basil, hang bunches upside
down in a warm, dry place, and store the dried basil in an airtight jar in a
cool, dark place. If you substitute dried herbs for fresh, the general rule of
thumb is ¾ - 1 teaspoon of a dried herb equals approximately 1 ½ - 2
teaspoons of a chopped, fresh herb.
Another bonus is that herbs can be added to just about any dish, and can
liven up the taste without using additional salt.
PESTO
2 cups fresh basil
½ cup light olive oil
2 tablespoons toasted pine nuts
1-2 cloves coarsely chopped garlic
1 teaspoon sea salt
½ cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
2 tablespoons freshly grated Romano cheese
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, room temperature
Place the first five ingredients in a food processor and pulse until smooth.
Transfer to a serving dish, and stir in the cheeses and butter until well
blended. Mix it in to pasta dishes, meatballs, etc., use as a spread, or thin
with additional olive oil and drizzle over meats and vegetables.
Yield: 1 cup
Enjoy!

HOME GARDENING WITH BARBARA by Barbara Shorrock
Home Gardening – Plant a Tree
What do you see when you look down your street? That
depends, of course on which neighbourhood you live in.
Decade by decade new developments take on different
looks – in the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s the garages, if there were
any, were in the back off the alleys. Front attached garages started to appear in the 70’s, but the houses were
still set fairly far back from the street. There were many
years following where almost every streetscape showed
row upon row of garages, with the houses tucked behind. Then came the picket fence and front verandah
with house closer to the sidewalk and garage out of
sight, like it used to be. By now the lots are smaller as the
city strives for higher density. The last time you drove (or
walked) down the street in one of Calgary’s old neighbourhoods in the summertime, how did you feel about
the ambience? Most likely the trees canopied over the
road and the air was cooler on a hot July day. That same
street becomes luminescent by late September when the
short cool days turn the leaves golden before they fall
from the trees and carpet the yards with future compost.
Photographers love that time of year.
It used to be customary for builders to plant a couple
of trees in front of every home to enhance the beauty
of the neighbourhood. For a while White and Colorado
Spruce and Northwest Poplar were favorites. We have
learned some things since then, among which is that
the common poplar makes a fine, fast-growing shade
tree suitable for large spaces such as parks, and a poor
choice for single family homes on small lots. As they
mature in 25-30 years, these poplars cause problems
with concrete foundations, sewage lines and sidewalks.
Many of them have come down along with some of the
large spruce that block the view from windows when
planted unwisely in the wrong place in the front yard.
My concern is not so much with the removal, but the
replacement. Many homeowners have replaced these
stately giants with GRASS and nothing but GRASS.
Where would the canopy and streetscape be if everyone did that? If the character and beauty of a community is determined by its trees, we do ourselves no favours
by cutting down the old and not planting new. There
are many varieties of gorgeous trees with amazing foliage and blooms and berries that will enhance our gardens for years to come as they reach their full size and
magnificence.
If you have a blank space in your yard that cries out for a
statement, talk to the experts at the garden centre and
get advice about making a wise choice regarding which
type of tree to plant there – one that will enhance but
not overwhelm the garden when it reaches maturity. Go
ahead. Plant a tree or two. We’ll all be glad you did.
Barbara Shorrock has been gardening in Calgary since
1976.

If market volatility is making you second-
Everyone seems to be sending out emailers these days. I
have lots that come into my inbox and sometimes there
are things out of alignment and missing. This seems to
be somewhat ‘accepted’ nowadays as very seldom do I
ever receive one that looks the same in Outlook, online,
and through webmail.
If you are looking for a cleaner more consistent look, hire
someone with a bit of HTML knowledge and build these
emails outside your email program or CRM interface. You
can even your images in your website’s image folder. Not
only will you have greater control over design, but you
will be able to make changes to these much more easily
once you set up a template. Then simply copy and paste
your complete code into your email program. Some tips
(which go against some normal web development best
practices):
• Use inline styles
• Don’t be afraid to use tables
• Limit the use of images where possible
These are just some suggestions to clean your emailers
up, but at the end of the day remember that the design
is somewhat irrelevant - it is the continuous and consistent delivery that is going to establish top of mind
awareness and loyalty to your brand. So spend the majority of your time developing content and ensuring
these emails get out on a consistent basis, and don’t
worry if the email doesn’t look perfect everywhere.

E-Learning video’s on how City Hall works – now available
on YouTube. The many communication tools available in
the new world of social media is helping make our city
more open and accessible all the time. For computer-literates who want to really get into the nuts and bolts of how
development happens in our City, I am pleased to report
that the City has now created and posted e-Learning videos
on YouTube explaining how our MDP ( Municipal Development Plan) works. You can find them and 785 other Cityrelated videos on the City of Calgary feed at YouTube.com,
and also at www.Calgary.ca/mdp.
PETER DEMONG
“ALDERTALK” - a low-cost, people friendly solution which is
working well: As you may know, after consultation with many
of you, I decided that the annual large “open houses” commonly held each year were costing a great deal of your money to host, and unfortunately sometimes had as many paid
City staff attending as there were constituents. Besides that,
I want to be able to meet with constituents informally more
than once year. So, I came up with the idea of “ALDERTALK”
once a month instead. This consists of me holding a 2 to 3
hour face-to-face with you at a local community association
each month, taking your questions and concerns and getting
to know more of you personally, at virtually no cost to taxpayers. I have to say I’m pretty proud of the ALDERTALK idea
– it’s off to a great start – and I’m really enjoying them! We’ve
had great attendance, and good discussions, questions and
advice for me covers a wide variety of issues – from burned
out street lights and playground signs, to potholes, parks and
pathways. The next session will be held at Deer Run Community 2127 146 Avenue Southeast on Saturday April 28th Note

Sponsorship and naming rights of LRT Stations and City
Owned Facilities now approved
Given the large tax increases and city expenses Council is
being faced with, Alderman Shane Keating and I brought
forward a request to look at some alternative ideas and opportunities for revenue generation, specifically selling naming rights to City owned facilities such as LRT stations. (hey,
if Shibuya, Japan can sell naming rights to public toilets for
big bucks..!!)
Administration approved the idea of looking at some of
these alternative ideas, so although we don’t yet have many
takers, if anyone wants to see an LRT station or other City
asset named after them along the lines of “Epcor Centre” or
“Pengrowth Saddledome” - and you have a big chequebook
to help keep taxes down for everyone else - the City may be
interested in speaking with you!
Calgary ready to party in 2012 It’s the 100th Anniversary of
the Calgary Stampede- recently named by CNN as the 5th
best Party spot in the world. Many events and displays are
planned, so if you haven’t been too involved with the Stampede for a while, this may be the year you want to think
about booking things ahead of time. Along with that, the
City is sharing the title of “Cultural Capital of Canada” this
year, which comes with $1.6 million federal dollars to help
sponsor exciting events and promote tourism. Beginning in
April, I expect you will be hearing a lot about that as well
– and that’s still not all! Along with the Stampede’s 100th
Birthday - we also have the Calgary Public Library, the Pumphouse Theatre, Calgary Recreation and Theatre Junction
GRAND Calgary ALSO celebrating their centennials as well.
It’s clear that 2012 is shaping up to be the great party year
for Calgary and Calgarians! Yaahooo!
That’s it for now folks...ALDERTALK with you soon! In the
meantime, if you have any questions or concerns please call
me at (403) 268-1653 or email eaward14@ calgary.ca.

ALDERMAN, WARD 13
DIANE COLLEY-URQUHART
Residents of Ward 13 awoke
in the very early hours of February 8th with fear and deep
concern from a caustic smoke
that filled their homes. The
smoke was so thick in some
places that residents “feared
their own homes were on fire – or that of their neighbours”.
Residents feared for their safety and for family members with
health conditions such as asthma.
Hundreds of calls to 311 and 911 began after midnight on the
8th, and increased throughout the day and into evening. Many
residents told me that they were “unable to get through to
311”. Those who managed to reach an operator received conflicting responses and limited information. Some residents
were told by 311 that “it was another jurisdiction and they
couldn’t help”. The Calgary Fire Department was never notified about the landfill fire, nor were they asked to help. Many
citizens were disappointed by this as they felt “the fire could
have been extinguished in the early stages rather than burning for 3 days”. Citizens reported that the “Fire Department
was driving around to see where the fire was”.
Residents also started calling my office immediately with
my staff being able to log first-hand accounts of the impact the fire and smoke had on adults, children and seniors.
Hundreds of calls and emails from residents described the
smoke as “toxic and foul smelling”. Many had to evacuate
their homes on their own. Some checked in to hotels. The
thick layer of black smoke blanketed the community for several days with some schools not allowing children to go outdoors over recess and lunch. Other residents gave first-hand
accounts of going to emergency or being hospitalized due
to smoke inhalation. I have listened to others who were still
experiencing upper respiratory symptoms for weeks after
the landfill fire.
In response to my citizens concerns, I called an urgent Town
Hall meeting in the Woodcreek Community Centre on February 21st to provide a forum for residents to tell me their
concerns directly, and to learn more about how it affected
the lives of so many. Over two hundred concerned citizens
attended – with standing room only. The Town Hall meeting
was also key to constructing the details and the facts on the
landfill fire incident. In gathering details from citizens at the
Town Hall meeting, and in the following weeks, a list of recurring concerns started to emerge.
In listening to you, and in my initial discussions with City Administration, these are some of the top preliminary priority
areas that I will be taking back to the community for further
discuss, and to work with residents on a go forward plan. We
need:
1. City Administration to report back to Council with a
comparison of landfill standards provincially, municipally
and federally on First Nations lands (through Environment
Canada). This will include a legal analysis of how to proceed
with different jurisdictions when the health and welfare of
citizens is at stake. In addition, this report will also include
any and all background information available on previous inspections, compliance with federal standards and licensing
requirements of this landfill.
2. A comprehensive review of our air quality monitoring systems and the timeliness and activation of it to detect toxic
chemicals released from the landfill fire.
3. To ensure that the best preventative measures are in place
and do all we can to protect our citizens, since there have
been several other landfill fires.
4. A review of the communication mechanisms with the different jurisdictions and our community.
5. To review and consider implementing emergency evacuation response plans that represent best practice and to make
people aware of these plans should an emergency event occur. This will also include consultation with surrounding municipalities and their volunteer fire response teams.
Following the next Town Hall meeting, all of these major issues need to be addressed with various stakeholders and
experts on how to best address the issues raised by the community. This will then clearly identify what I will take forward
to Council.
As your elected official, I want to assure you that this issue is
my top priority. I want to extend my deepest appreciation to
everyone who took the time to contact me and attend our
Town Hall meeting. I encourage everyone to continue to stay
involved to seek the results we need to achieve in order to
prevent these fires from ever occurring again.

Sincerely,
Diane

Red and White are the official colours of Canada, as
a result of the proclamation of the arms of Canada by
King George V in 1921.
The National Flag of Canada was the culmination of
many years of discussion, thousands of designs, and
much debate in Parliament. On February 15, 1965, the
national flag of Canada was raised for the first time over
Parliament Hill.
The Great Seal of Canada is used on all documents
relating to state proclamations, and commissions of
cabinet ministers, as well as government officials. Made
of tempered steel, it weight 3.75 kg and is 12.7 cm in
diameter.
The Maple Leaf Tartan was made an official symbol of
Canada on March 9, 2011. The tartan was designed by
David Weiser in 1964, and the pattern incorporates the
colours of the maple leaf through the changing seasons:
green leaves of summer, gold colours in the fall, red
which appears with the first frost, and the brown tones
of fallen leaves.
The Canoe, now used mainly for recreation, was a major
form of transportation for the fur traders and early Canadian explorers.
The Moose is found across the country in forested areas, especially near lakes. The moose is the largest member of the deer family; a mature bull stands as tall as a
horse, and weighs over 600 kg / 1300 lbs.
The Canada Goose is a wild goose belonging to the
genus Branta, which is native to arctic and temperate
regions of North America. A black head and neck with
white “chinstrap” and a brownish-grey body are its distinguishing features.

The children continue to learn about Birds in April.
Apple Tree Preschool will also introduce some new
animal friends (or should I say “feathered friends”).
Ducks and chicks will abound at Apple Tree. It is the
excitement in a child’s voice that you will be hearing
when he/she tells you the first time that…chicks can’t
swim!! We actually get to touch them, feed them and
take care of them.
Apple Tree Preschool will be all over the world learning about different kinds of birds, their homes and
their calls. Winter birds, summer birds and of course,
spring birds like the robins who lay such beautiful blue
eggs. Why do birds fly south in the fall? Why do some
birds stay for the winter? What do birds eat? So many
questions…so many answers. It’s so much fun to experience, experiment and learn life first hand. At Apple

tartar? Are the gums a nice pink or is there a line of hot
red swollen inflammation along the teeth? Put your nail
against the gum line, does your cat wince and pull away?
I continually see glorious shining coats on dogs and
cats. Then as I continue my examination I open the pet’s
mouth and see rotten foul-smelling teeth and gums.
Some of these pets are probably in constant pain. Taking care of your pet’s teeth can be time-consuming and
expensive. Owners tend to ignore the teeth because
they don’t see them, but healthy teeth are directly
linked to your pet’s short and long-term well being.
DENTAL DISEASE
AND YOUR PET
I see dental disease in almost every pet I examine in my
veterinary clinic. Every dog, cat, and ferret should have
its teeth checked during an annual physical examination. Does your pet have gleaming white teeth? What
about his back molars? Are they free of yellow hard
Many people believe if they feed their pet a hard food
they will not get dental disease. Specialized diets,
mouthwashes, and dental products help, but if there
was some magic component added to food that eliminated dental disease, wouldn’t people be eating it to
avoid our own dental disease and the ensuing costs.
A dog or cat, ideally, should have their teeth brushed
daily. You can use a soft tooth brush. Finger brushes
have bumps that do not get under the gum line. Animal
toothpastes do not foam or contain sodium bicarbonate
so they can be swallowed. They come in flavors ranging

from tuna to chicken to beef. Yum yum! In the carnivore,
it is the outer surfaces of the teeth where the most tartar collects. Your veterinarian will show you how to start
to brush your pet’s teeth. Many of my clients have even
taught their pets to tolerate electric brushes.
A few pets will not allow brushing under any circumstance. These pets will benefit from the chewy products
on the market as well as a specialized dental diet. These
products range from chewy rawhides impregnated
with enzymatic toothpastes, to foods developed with
particles to clean as close to the gum line as possible.
Some enzymatic products will have some benefits
if just sprayed in the pet’s mouth, but none of these
products out perform a daily tooth brushing. I just had
a crown replaced because I love to crunch hard candies;
for the same reason never give pets hard bones and
toys. Fractured crowns expose pulp and cause dental
abscesses. Abscesses hurt.
Ideally pets would have preventative cleanings like us,
but more often owners will only agree if tartar, gingivitis,
or periodontal disease becomes visible. Then your veterinarian is going to recommend a cleaning and examination of your pet’s teeth under a general anesthetic. No
self-respecting pet will allow a complete scaling, polishing, and fluoride treatment awake. I recently expected
the examination of a young dog’s mouth after cleaning
to be entirely normal. Visually things looked good, but I
discovered four deep pockets between the gum and four
teeth. Dental radiographs confirmed the bone around
the roots of the teeth was completely eaten away by disease. The removal of those diseased teeth allows a better
chance to keep the surrounding teeth healthy. This disease would not have been discovered without a proper
examination of an anesthetized pet. Superficial scraping
of visual tartar only hides disease and lulls a person into
thinking their pet’s mouth is healthy.
Rotten teeth and gums can be a portal to bacteria entering the blood stream and traveling through out the
pet’s body. When the teeth are infected it is painful and
can cause an otherwise sweet pet to become cantankerous. Start brushing early and try to make your pet as
beautiful on the inside as he is on the outside.
