BRIAN STEVENSON President, Lakehead University I have the privilege of being the President of the University that houses the Lakehead Thunderwolves. From Midnight Madness to the roar of our outstanding fans, I am proud of each of our athletes, coaches and staff – our team. While many of us take very real ownership of this team, the Thunderwolves are not exclusively our team. No, the energy, enthusiasm and power of our Thunderwolves extend far beyond the rinks, tracks, trails, fields and Hangar to include the communities and people they live with and play for. 4 Thunderwolves fans can be heard cheering from Thunder Bay, Orillia and beyond; and for good reason. People are proud to support a team that trains and plays hard for them. They cheer even harder when Lakehead’s athletes take the time to give back by volunteering in our communities – like helping victims of Thunder Bay’s May 2012 Flood. Thunderwolves embody the qualities everyone should aspire to and, thus, raise Lakehead’s profile to rousing heights. Representing our University in a manner that sets the standard for sportsmanship and gallantry, and being such a potent source of school spirit, are just some of the reasons why our invaluable sponsors and communities rally behind our team. It’s why your fans paint their faces with our colours and fill our ears with deafening songs. I have the privilege of sitting on the Thunderwolves Hockey Board. I also have the pride and pleasure of being a fan. I wish you all a successful and safe twelfth season as Lakehead University’s worthy ambassadors and team. TOM WARDEN ATHLETICS DIRECTOR, LAKEHEAD UNIVERSITY Welcome to Lakehead University Varsity Hockey. It is my sincere privilege to present to you a hockey program that is designed for excellence. Our coaching staff insists that our hockey players not only perform with distinction on the ice but also set very high academic standards. The result is that many of our student-athletes are consistently named as CIS Academic All-Canadians, a fact that we are very proud of. I would like to sincerely thank our many corporate supporters, alumni and fans for your exceptional backing over the years; without you all this is not possible. I look forward to a wonderful year of Thunderwolves Hockey enjoy the games! RORY CAVA PRESIDENT, THUNDERWOLVES HOCKEY Welcome to another exciting season of Thunderwolves Hockey. As we enter our 12th year as a program it is important to recognize and thank everyone that has helped us along the way. 12 years of Thunderwolves Hockey would not have been possible without our great fans and corporate partners. JOEL SCHERBAN HEAD COACH, thunderwolves hockey The 2012-13 Thunderwolves’ season will be another exciting season for our fans. This year’s team features a veteran lineup consisting of 21 returning players and five first-year players. Of those five, three of them were OHL Captains, one is an NHL draft pick with professional experience, and one has won an OHL Championship. Fans can expect a hardworking, skilled team similar to last year’s, which finished second in the nine-team OUA West Division, but with added experience. Returning on the coaching staff are Mike Busniuk, Jeremy Adduono, and Colin Zulianello; while 2012 / 2013 yearbook With all the passion that our community has for our team comes a responsibility. We have a commitment to excellence and we continue to work at having the best team in the country. Our focus as a team is on character, work ethics and toughness because that has always been what hockey in Thunder Bay has always been about. Adam Kates has been added as Strength and Conditioning Coach. Ron Rost once again returns as Head Trainer. Fans can expect to see the best OUA hockey they have ever witnessed at the Fort William Gardens. Three of the last four teams to compete in the CIS championship game are from the OUA, and an OUA team (McGill) is the reigning National Champion. The OUA West had a great recruiting year and every team has improved. Every game at the Gardens will be a battle for important points as we strive to win our division. www.thunderwolveshockey.com 2012-2013 SCHEDULE DateTimeOpponent Thu, Jan 4 Fri, Jan 5 7:30 7:30 VS GUELPH VS GUELPH Fri, Jan 11 Sat, Jan 12 7:00 7:00 at York at York Fri, Jan 18 Sat, Jan 19 7:30 7:30 VS ONTARIO TECH VS ONTARIO TECH Fri, Jan 25 Sat, Jan 26 7:30 7:30 at Windsor at Windsor Fri, Feb 1 Sat, Feb 2 7:30 7:30 VS WATERLOO VS WATERLOO Fri, Feb 8 Sat, Feb 9 7:15 7:30 at Brock at Waterloo Fri, Sep 21 Sat, Sep 22 7:30 7:30 VS OTTAWA VS OTTAWA Sat, Sep 28 Sun, Sep 29 7:30 7:30 VS BROCK VS BROCK Fri, Oct 5 Sat, Oct 6 7:30 7:30 at Guelph at Guelph Fri, Oct 12 Sat, Oct 13 7:30 7:30 VS YORK VS YORK Fri, Oct 19 Sat, Oct 20 7:30 7:30 at Waterloo at Laurier Fri, Oct 26 Sat, Oct 27 7:30 7:30 VS WESTERN ONTARIO VS WESTERN ONTARIO Fri, Nov 2 Sat, Nov 3 7:00 3:00 at Carleton at Carleton Fri, Nov 9 Sat, Nov 10 7:30 7:30 VS U.Q.T.R. Erik Lodge – Defence 2001-2006 (Bachelor of Education) After graduating and getting married to my wife Janessa (also a Lakehead grad) in 2006, we went to play in Germany for the Hielbronner Falkens and our team won the league championship that year. It was a great experience for us as we travelled and enjoyed our time in Germany. We loved the culture and created a strong bond together in our first year of marriage. The next summer we were planning on returning to play in Europe, but the school division in Erik Lodge with wife Janessa www.thunderwolveshockey.com our home town of Red Deer, Alberta called and offered me a permanent teaching position. After reflecting, we decided to take the new challenge in our lives. I am now in my sixth year of teaching and I run a high performance hockey academy at Notre Dame High School. I’m also the Assistant Coach of the ACAC College hockey team, a mentorship instructor for the Red Deer Minor Hockey Association, and run hockey schools in the summer. In addition, I have recently started working with Head Coach Joel Scherban as the Thunderwolves’ Scout in Western Canada, talking to potential recruits about all the advantages of going to Lakehead. We have created a great life together which includes two beautiful boys. Kohen was born in October of 2008, and then in February 2011 we welcomed our second son, Nate. Janessa is now running a very successful home-based health and wellness business while the boys keep her on her toes daily. They are very busy and will most likely be hockey players; you might just see their names on the Thunderwolves roster one day! Bryan Duce Bryan Duce – Forward 2002-2004 (Honours Bachelor of Commerce) After graduation I stopped playing competitive hockey and went straight into the workforce. I was hired by the Royal Bank in a commercial banking role. After one year with RBC, I took a job with the Thunderwolves as the Coordinator for the CIS University Cup which Lakehead hosted in 2009 and 2010. I worked with the Thunderwolves organization for three years before accepting a role with my current employer, Tbaytel, where I work in the marketing department. 2012 / 2013 yearbook Where are they now? completing school assignments at the same time. I needed to learn how to manage my time and prioritize my workload with such a heavy schedule. I learned to work well with others and became a strong leader in a team atmosphere, and this is a huge asset for me as I move forward in my life. Bryan Duce 8 Jason Lange and family I have been married for two years to Ann-Marie Migay. We met during my time at Lakehead when she worked as a physiotherapist in the LU Sports Medicine Clinic. We are fortunate to be expecting our first child in the New Year and are very excited to be starting our family. Jason Lange – Forward 2002-2006 (Bachelor of Arts - Psychology) After graduating in 2006, I moved to London, Ontario. I prepared for two years to be able to apply and interview for the London Police Service, and was successful in getting hired onto the force. I have been working as a Constable for four years now. I didn’t continue to play hockey, as I made the decision to start my professional career right away. Looking back, now I wished I had attempted to play in Europe for a couple of years – it might have helped to pay off my school loans! My wife Michelle and I just had our fifth anniversary in August. We have two children; a boy, Mason, who is four and a girl, Mackenzie who is one-and-a-half years old. Mason just started junior kindergarten this fall. How did your experiences on the ice and in the classroom prepare you for your career? Erik Lodge Going to Lakehead taught me resilience by playing hockey and 2012 / 2013 yearbook One of the biggest skills I learned while attending Lakehead was time management. The demands on the student athlete are challenging and it’s easy to get overloaded. Initially it was difficult to manage a full course load and remain dedicated to the sport, but after a month or two everything became manageable. I believe my entire hockey career prepared me for the workforce but time spent at LU exposed me to many unique situations and deadlines that reinforced the need for a strong work ethic. Many late nights were spent at the University. I can remember on more than one occasion, going directly from the University to the arena for 7 a.m. practice. it’s great to put the skates back on. I also love fishing in the winter and summer, and most weekends in the fall I am out hunting. Jason Lange I still play in the Police hockey league. It’s actually a pretty good league; there are lots of ex-professional and university hockey players in it. I enjoy tennis and play golf as often as I can, but I don’t get out much because I like to spend a lot of time with my two young children. Jason Lange To do well on the ice and in the classroom you need to have structure, as well as the ability to multi-task. On the ice especially, you need a dedicated work ethic to get results. These qualities are a must in most jobs including mine, and I certainly learned this in my years at Lakehead. Do you still play any form of hockey and keep active? Erik Lodge I’m on the ice twice a day with my hockey academy with our elite athletes in Red Deer. When I’m not on the ice you can find me at the gym or spending time with my wonderful family. In the summer I enjoy playing golf and camping with family and friends. Bryan Duce I took a few years off after graduation, but I have recently started to skate once a week in the winter months and Erik Lodge What are your best memories of your years at Lakehead? Erik Lodge It’s hard for me to list my “best” memories at Lakehead because I have so many that come to mind. In the 2004 playoffs, I scored the winning goal in the fourth overtime period to eliminate Western Ontario – now that was a long game. I remember scoring against York with only one second left in the first overtime period during our playoff run to go to the CIS Nationals in 2006. Lifting the Queen’s Cup at the Gardens in front of the best fans in the country just a few weeks later was awesome. Going to the www.thunderwolveshockey.com Where are they now? process of that program which I took a lot of pride in. I hope one day I can bring my whole family there so they can see that I have left a mark on that great organization and that I helped build something very special. Bryan Duce Bryan Duce and Ann-Marie Nationals in Edmonton and making it all the way to the University Cup championship game at Rexall Place was great. Playing for Team Canada in the FISU Games in Innsbruck, Austria was quite an experience. Most importantly, I cherish all the friends and teammates I developed lifelong relationships with while playing at Lakehead. Janessa and I both loved our time at Lakehead and miss it so much. I miss the experiences shared with my teammates, coaches and Rooster (Head Trainer Ron Rost). I miss playing in front of the amazing crowd that always treated me so well. I was there for the Thunderwolves first season, so I miss being a part of the growing My years at Lakehead were very memorable with many moments that I replay over and over again in my head. Specifically, I remember being amazed at the hometown crowd and how loud and enthusiastic they were, especially during the playoffs. They are no doubt the best fans in Canada and I feel honoured to have played in front of them. The team has evolved quite a bit since those early years. We were a blue collar team that worked hard and had great goaltending. We earned every win and even surprised a few teams. The current team is so skilled, but the visiting teams are also ready to play when they step on the ice at the Gardens. I miss the everyday interaction with teammates the most. These are guys you spend every day with and they become a second family. I always knew the day would come when I would stop playing competitively, but I can’t say I was prepared for what it felt like to leave the locker room for the last time. 9 Jason Lange Jason Lange When I had some down time, hanging out at the LU Outpost with the boys was always fun. I really liked spending time between classes at the gym, either working out with the other guys on the team or playing squash. That’s what I miss most about my days at Lakehead – the guys from the team. I enjoyed going for pre-game meals, travelling on the weekends for out of town games, and the everyday banter at school and the rink. PYE BROTHERS FUELS Bruce Pye Sales Agent 1250 Rosslyn Rd. Hockey players just never seem to quit. Look at these guys. Year-round they’re busting out of the house in the dark, hauling big stinky bags, icing parts they didn’t know existed – they’re hardcore committed. They come from all walks of life to meet up on, and off, the ice. Some are at that age where screening is vital. They’ve had experience with the “stick test” and no, it’s nothing to do with the game. It’s the ColonCancerCheck kit. These guys have lots of reasons to stick around and they’re not shy to talk about it. If only these dressing rooms had ears. Don’t take life for granted. Take the test. www.ColonCancerCheck.ca www.thunderwolveshockey.com 2012 / 2013 yearbook Adam Sergerie, 2012 Run for the Cure 24 THUNDERWOLVES involved in the community By John Payetta The Lakehead Thunderwolves are Thunder Bay’s team, and the city has shown the Wolves fantastic support since the re-birth of the Lakehead hockey program in 2001. The team has given back to the community in many different ways, including player involvement in community outreach programs as well as the team’s associations with various charities. 2012 / 2013 yearbook Even with a full schedule of classes, homework assignments, practices, off-ice conditioning, travelling, and games, Thunderwolves hockey players have found the time to get involved with a variety of causes. They have gone to schools to speak with kids about the importance of a healthy lifestyle including proper nutrition and avoiding tobacco products, and have promoted literacy to their young fans by reading with them in their classrooms. Thunderwolves players took part in the Christmas family skate to help raise funds for P.R.O. Kids, a program which helps financially disadvantaged youth participate in organized sports. They’ve worked as crossing guards in conjunction with Dougall Media to remind drivers to slow down in school zones, and bagged groceries at Safeway stores and wrapped daffodils at TBaytel to help support cancer research. And that’s just to name a few of things that the Thunderwolves players have done. www.thunderwolveshockey.com 25 The hockey program has also worked with numerous groups on Thunderwolves game nights to help raise funds and donations for a wide array of charitable causes. The annual teddy bear toss game is great fun for the fans, but more importantly, helps organizations like the Christmas Cheer Fund, Dilico Child Services, Children’s Aid, The Salvation Army, and the Dew Drop Inn provide plush toys to the children that need them. The team has organized canned food drives supporting those last two groups, and for the Shelter House as well. In 2011, the Thunderwolves donated $1 to the United Way for every walk-up ticket sold at the annual Christmas challenge games. Some ongoing game night promotions have been very successful in raising money for other great causes. Fountain Tire and Musselwhite Mine have donated $30 for every www.thunderwolveshockey.com goal the Wolves score at home games for the last seven years. The first recipient of this was the George Jeffrey Children’s Treatment Centre, and for the last few years that money has gone to support the Thunder Bay Special Olympics. Fountain Tire and Musselwhite Mine have donated over $15,000 to these two groups so far. And beginning this season, those funds will be given to Ronald McDonald House, so make sure you cheer on the Thunderwolves to keep scoring. Another popular initiative has been the special “one-time only” jerseys that the Wolves have worn as part of the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre game night sponsorship. Once a year, the Thunderwolves wear unique jerseys, specially designed to be worn for that game only, and fans bid on them during the game through a silent auction. The winning bidders are then awarded their jersey after the game by the player who wore it, complete with an autograph. All net proceeds are donated to the Northern Cancer Fund, and so far over $10,000 has been raised. Of course, none of this would have been possible without the generous support of the fans. In fact, both restaurants have been corporate partners with the Wolves since the team’s inception in 2001, and continue to be the official host restaurant sponsors of the Thunderwolves to this day. Claudio Foresta, Owner/Operator of Kelsey’s 2012 / 2013 yearbook and Montana’s, felt it was crucial to be involved with the Thunderwolves hockey program from the ground floor. “Since day one, I believed it was important to sponsor our local team and ensure that we grow our sponsorship to a level that assists the team in many ways,” Foresta said. Kelsey’s and Montana’s are perhaps best known for the “puck out of play” sponsorship. Each time the puck goes into the stands, there is a short public address announcement about the restaurants – and to inform fans about a related promotion, the ever popular post-game “two-for-one appetizers.” Both Kelsey’s Restaurant and Montana’s Cookhouse are filled with fans after home games, because they can bring in their ticket stub to receive www.thunderwolveshockey.com two-for-one appetizers for the rest of the night. It’s not uncommon to see a group of Lakehead players having a post-game meal at Kelsey’s or Montana’s either. Over the years, Kelsey’s and Montana’s have been involved with the Thunderwolves hockey program in many other ways. At the Fort William Gardens, Montana’s sponsored the “Hot wheels for hot meals” trike race that took place on the ice during intermission, as well as the “Montana’s Master Blaster” cannon that fires t-shirts into the seats. Kelsey’s sponsored the “Score-O” intermission promo where a contestant tries to shoot the puck into a small opening through a board covering the net, and even tossed hot chicken wings (safely in thermal bags) into the crowd during the Kelsey’s “Wing Toss.” Foresta feels it’s imperative to be involved with programs like the Thunderwolves which are vital to Thunder Bay. “Lakehead Thunderwolves hockey is a significant part of our community, and I am fortunate to have my two restaurants participating in this program,” he said. Fans who log on to the official team website; thunderwolveshockey.com; can enter the Kelsey’s and Montana’s “Dinner and a game” contest. For every Thunderwolves home game, one lucky person wins a $25 gift card from either restaurant plus two game tickets. Kelsey’s and Montana’s have been involved with special events too. During the 2009 and 2010 CIS University Cup National Championships held in Thunder Bay, Kelsey’s and Montana’s fed hungry fans at the “Indoor tailgating party” in the Fort William Curling Club adjacent to the Gardens. Montana’s has hosted a season ticket drive where the Thunderwolves’ players helped the regular staff work an outdoor BBQ as well as wait tables inside the Cookhouse. When the Thunderwolves played the NHL Legends in an exhibition game in 2006, Kelsey’s hosted both teams for a post-game meal. With a restaurant full of fans, Thunderwolves, and NHL hall of famers, you can be sure some great stories were told over dinner that night. For Foresta, having Kelsey’s and Montana’s as major sponsors of the Wolves is a labor of love. “I enjoy working with the Thunderwolves staff in bringing our sponsorship to life each and every year,” he said. “My restaurant teams know how involved we are with the Thunderwolves, and appreciate the level of sponsorship we provide.” It’s always easy to tell if the Wolves are playing at home when you enter Kelsey’s or Montana’s on a Friday or Saturday during hockey season. On Lakehead’s home game days, the staff will be wearing Thunderwolves t-shirts to show their continued support for the team. A Howlin’ Good Time! It isn’t swallowed. It just moves around in a brown juicy cocktail of chemical sludge that gets spit out every few seconds. Curious? It’s smokeless tobacco, also known as spit or chewing tobacco. There are two types of smokeless tobacco: snuff and chew. Snuff is a fine grain tobacco that often comes in tea bag-like pouches that users “pinch” or “dip” between their lower lip and gum. Chew is shredded or twisted tobacco leaves that users put between their cheek and gum. Both of these tobacco products contain nicotine, a substance known to be even more addictive than cocaine or heroin. One can or puck of snuff or chew actually contains the same amount of nicotine as 60 cigarettes! So what’s the big deal? If you chew and spit it out, it can’t be as bad as inhaling tobacco smoke into your lungs, right? Wrong. Smokeless does not mean harmless. The health risks of using chew or snuff are just as frightening as those associated with smoking cigarettes. There are over 3,000 chemicals found in spit tobacco and at least 28 are proven to cause cancer. The list of potential health risks linked to spit tobacco is very long and starts with: bad breath, yellow teeth, bleeding gums, and even worse, cancer of the throat, mouth and stomach. Warning signs like sloughing skin, white bumps or red spots on the tongue, gums or cheeks, may present themselves early, or there may be very few visible symptoms at all. The fact is, spit tobacco can cause deadly illness in its users. Sadly, young athletes start to use spit tobacco under the false impression that it is less harmful that using cigarettes or that the “rush” they get from nicotine can improve their athletic performance. Some believe that they don’t feel part of the team unless they start dipping, too. The best thing a chewer can do for their health is to take steps now to break the addiction: Make a plan. Get support from family, friends or a health care provider. Use nicotine replacement therapy such as nicotine gum, patches or lozenges. Ask a health care provider or pharmacist about them and how to properly use them. Plan ahead and use substitutes such as sugarless gum, mints, beef jerky, sunflower seeds, shredded coconut, raisins or dried fruit. Get involved in healthier activities and establish a new daily routine. Parents should talk to their kids about tobacco use and know the warning signs to watch for. Want more information? Thinking of quitting? Talk to a health care provider or call the Thunder Bay District Health Unit at (807) 625-5928. Tobacco free counseling is available and can double the chances of quitting. 2012 / 2013 yearbook www.thunderwolveshockey.com Proud to Support Lakehead University Thunderwolves Hockey PETS CARE Proud supporter of the Thunderwolves Hockey Adopt a Group Program...
