District News Page 2 DISTRICT LIBRARY NEWS: NOMS Lock - In Events Benefit the Middle School Library Team Discovery (7-3/8-3) and 8-2 teachers and students participated in a Lock-In Event to update the library’s collection of books. Students assisted the librarian, Mrs. Foreman, with collection development in the following ways: recommending specific titles, authors and subjects, reading book reviews in professional journals, utilizing an online curriculum support tool to locate appropriate middle level books, and perusing the Best Books of 2014 reading list. Students are currently demonstrating their artistic skills with designing a bookplate to represent their team donation. All books will be identified with this bookplate and also a Team Donation spine label. The students raised $2,000 to purchase new books for the library. Check out the Team Discovery donations by accessing Destiny Quest: Resource Lists. http://destiny.conewago.k12.pa.us/quest/servlet/presentquestform.do?site=103&alreadyValidated=true CTE Celebrates Dr. Seuss’s Birthday In celebration of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, the Conewago Township Elementary School students participated in a school-wide used book drive on March 3, 2015. Each of CTE's 24 classrooms competed to see who would bring in the most gently used books and CDs. This valuable lesson stressed recycling and charitable giving. The books were collected by the Friends of Guthrie Memorial Library in Hanover to be resold at their Annual Used Book Sale on April 24th and 25th. Each child who brought in a donation received a Cat in the Hat book mark and stickers. Every student at CTE will receive a coupon for a free book at the book sale in April. Close to 1,000 books were brought in by the enthusiastic students. Two classes will enjoy a pizza party for bringing in the most books! Congratulations to Ms. Hoffman's class and Ms. Groft's class, who were the lucky winners with over 500 donated books between the two. Thanks to all who participated in this very successful event! District News Page 3 8-2 Happenings Middle school teachers love to have fun while offering rewarding and challenging programs for their students. The teachers on 8-2 are no exception and this year, because of the great kids on the team, 8-2 has had more fun than ever! Our Dress for Success program just finished its second session. On D days, students who want to participate dress in business casual clothing; this is recorded in homeroom for each of seven cycles. Students who dress professionally for five of the seven days earn a pizza lunch. This time around, we had 45 students participate, with nineteen students dressing for success often enough for pizza: Kamdyn Balko, Austin Brotherton, Julianna Feuerstein, Bryli Lookenbill, Jackson Saner, Briar Sauble, Kaylee Swift, Dru Harlacher, Rileigh Smith, Daelyn Stabler, Liliana Medina, Citlally Aguilera, My-Hoa Do, Cory Hess, Sydnee Loy, Dylan McFeaters, Jissel Quinteros-Ventura, Rohan Rashid, and Brennan Romanoff. Research shows when students feel good about themselves, they perform better in school, and 8-2 students are lookin’ good! As the second trimester came to a close, the 8-2 teachers wanted to do something fun for the students who regularly do what is expected of them, while at the same time, they wanted to offer extra support for those students who needed it. A March Madness day was planned in which students who earned it, participated in academic and athletic challenges. Students who needed support were given time in the computer lab to work on missing and/or challenging assignments. Mr. Heird hosted a 24 Challenge tournament as his academic event, and Justin Gruver was the winner. Other winners included Rachel Cole, Shaylin Bentz, Tony Lua, Acxel Alvarez, and Wyatt Taughinbaugh in the Tower of Power; Bryli Lookenbill, Nick Gutshall, Kaylee Swift, and Sarah Wise in the Ball Catcher competition; Citlally Aguilera, Sydnee Loy, Ally Culp, My-Hoa Do, and Kayla Starling in Scrutineyes; Dakota Reid and Dylan McFeaters in Fishbowl; and Caleb Brown, Sam Garrison, Briar Sauble, and Nathan Armstrong in History Hodgepodge Trivia. The scores from the morning events were combined with the athletic events in the afternoon; with four academic and three athletic first places, Mr. Steenstra’s homeroom won the prize of breakfast from McDonald’s. 8-2’s originally scheduled Lock-in was cancelled due to weather; it was rescheduled for March 13-14 and went off without a hitch. Lock-ins are fundraisers; this year 8-2, following the lead of the blended team, chose to support the middle school library, which had no money in its budget for new books. The lock-in unofficially started at Infinito’s with a fundraising event. A number of students and their families, as well as the 8-2 teachers, gathered for dinner before heading to the school for the rest of the evening. Forty-six students had signed up for the lock-in and by 7:45, they were ready to go. The evening started with trivia, an 8-2 lock-in tradition. The game was made up of pop culture, academic, and internet questions, and was won by the team of Tre Hooper, Maria Robinson, and Andrew Lippy. Next up, students could play board games upstairs or take a turn at a human version of Hungry, Hungry Hippo in the gym. Hannah Shearer, Sydnee Loy, and Bryli Lookinbill beat the teacher teams of Mr. Heird/Mr. Starner and Mr. Harned/Mr. Angelini to win the overall event. The Scavenger Hunt in the dark was next; the team of Tyler Raubenstine, Tre Hooper, Kamdyn Balko, and Sarah Wise won with the best score ever recorded in this event! Soon after, it was movie time and then lights out. Students were awakened at 7:00 am with Reveille played over the PA system. They ate fresh donuts generously supplied by the New Oxford Coffee Company and were picked up and on their way home by 8:00. The 8-2 teachers agreed – this was one of the best lock-ins ever. Not only because the team raised enough money to buy Mrs. Foreman’s entire library book wish list, but also because the students who attended were there to have a good time and that makes all the difference! Volume 38, Issue 3 Page 4 CTE & NOE Career Day On Wednesday, February 11, 2015, both Conewago Township Elementary and New Oxford Elementary hosted a Career Day for all third grade students. We had numerous businesses in our area volunteer their time to present to our students including, but not limited to, Elsner Engineering, Ghostechs, JoBo Holstein Farm LLC, Lincoln Bus Lines, Olde Glory Contractors, Penn Township Police Department, and S.A.V.E.S Medic 46. We also had the privilege to have Adams County Tech Prep come and speak to the students. At the elementary level, the career readiness goal of the Guidance Department is to make the connection between individual interests and career choice. We encourage our students to find that spark of interest and explore where that can lead. Each third grader was given the opportunity to choose three career presentations in which they had an interest. During the sessions, the presenters shared background about their particular business, a description of their work environment, skills needed to perform their job, training needed to prepare them for the job, and the interests they had that led them to this career choice. Our third grade students enjoyed a successful day! Jump Rope for HEART Valentines for Veterans Students from CVSD participated in Jump Rope for Heart from February 20-27, 2015 during their physical education classes. The students had a lot of fun jumping rope! They participated in a variety of activities which included single rope jumping, partner jumping, and group jumping. Students in Mrs. Bollinger's second grade class at New Oxford Elementary traveled to the Brethren Home to make valentines for some of the residents there. The residents were veterans who served in one of the branches of the Armed Forces. The students learned many things about the veterans while enjoying making enough valentines for them to enjoy and share. The Brethren Home residents were thrilled to have the visitors. They received many well wishes and valentine greetings during the activity. The day was a great way to celebrate Valentine’s Day and Veteran’s Day during the month of February. The total raised was $2,851 (CTE), $2,233 (NOE), $8,884 (CVIS) and $290 (NOMS). Total for the District was $16,447. The money was donated to the American Heart Association.
