Here is the story, directly from Lindsay, as to how she got involved with HFH. “During my time at the University of British Columbia (UBC), I volunteered with the UBC Recreation program for five academic years. During my final year volunteering, I decided the energy, drive, and enthusiasm our student staff put into our programming could be used as an inspiration to contribute positively to the global community. I, along with Bill Humphries - a UBC Varsity Basketball Alumni who had funded a Habitat for Humanity (HFH) trip for varsity athletes for the past 3 years - wrote a proposal to the Department of Athletics and Recreation to help fund the trip. The proposal was approved and I was honored to be asked to help lead the trip. For 2 weeks, Bill and I led a group of 10 undergraduate students in building a house in Usulutan, El Salvador for a family. continued on p. 4 From the Director’s Desk……………….……. Brandon Manley, who nominated him for this recognition, has this to say about the education that Gabe provides: “Gabe is a great guy. He promotes me to be more hands-on and not rely on machines. He is very hands on. He provides a calm environment to become more confident in my abilities. This has been very helpful for me. He allows me to “run the show” which has helped me learn from my mistakes and see what works and what doesn’t. He seems to be very invested in my future. He got to know me on a personal level. He is more than an ACI. He always makes me feel part of the team, inviting me to outside events. He has given me a taste of multiple other certifications such as Kinesio Taping and ART. The CAATE Corner The CAATE has begun to formally examine the appropriate level of the professional degree in collaboration with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Executive Committee for Education (ECE). The CAATE has also requested the opinions of the following physician groups on how the level of the degree is viewed amongst physician colleagues: American Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Society for Sports Medicine. The CAATE and the ECE are researching the optimal entry-level degree for the athletic training profession and will be issuing a white paper with the results. The CAATE and the ECE will ask for public comment from institutions, individuals, and other professional organizations in response to the white paper. This topic is sure to generate much discussion as the CAATE, the ECE, and the members of our profession debate the future direction of athletic training education. If you have any questions, please contact Dr. Restrepo at 305-348-3398 or [email protected] Page 4 *** PHOTO ALBUM: Habitat for Humanity *** Continued from p. 1… With our efforts, we saved the masons 4 to 5 weeks worth of work. The total build time was cut down from 9 weeks to 4-5 weeks. When we arrived, the foundation for the house had been laid. By the time we left, we had finished the house with the exception of laying down the floor tiles and putting on the metal roof sheets! It was an amazing experience to be a part of and I am blessed and honored to have been asked to help lead the team. I am also thankful for the support of the FIU Athletic Training Program in allowing me to participate in a rewarding international experience, which I am extremely passionate about.”
