A Monthly Publication – Volume 44, Issue 2 – August 2014
Welcome back to another school year at Moanalua High School. We hope that everyone had a restful, rejuvenating summer
filled with family and friends. We’d like to extend a special greeting to our freshmen, the class of 2018. May the year ahead be
the beginning of good times and fond memories as you work toward becoming college and career ready.
Moanalua High School now has a seven period bell schedule! All students should be registered for 7 classes. The school day is
now extended and tutorials are offered after school on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of five-day school weeks. When we
have four-day weeks – there will only be one tutorial on Thursdays after school. Teachers are available during this time to assist
students. Please encourage your child to attend and take advantage of the tutorial times.
Congratulations to the following who are elected to serve on our 2014-15 School Community Council (SCC). Our parent
representatives are: Sandra Kawamura and Mary Bonnety. Diana Borean will be our alternate Parent Rep. We are fortunate to
welcome back Mrs. Glorianne Young who will again serve as Chairperson of the SCC. She is now one of our Community
Members as all of her children are now proud graduates of Moanalua High School. Byron Nagasako, Military School Liaison,
will continue to serve as a community representative and David Tom, also a Military School Liaison, will serve as alternate. Our
new Vice Chairperson is student member, Jocelyn Yip. Mary Bonetty will serve as our new secretary. Congratulations and
mahalo to all for their willingness to serve and lead our school.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend Moanalua High
School’s Open House on Thursday, August 14, 2014, at 6:00 p.m. in the
cafeteria. A PTSA meeting will kick-off activities at 6:00. Beginning at
7:00 p.m., you will be able to visit each class that your child attends for
ten (10) minutes. Be sure to copy your child’s class schedule on the form
included in this issue of THE WORD. Because time is very limited,
teachers will not be able to discuss individual needs. The bell will ring
indicating when you need to change classes, and there will be a 5minute passing time. Also attached with this issue is a form for your
child’s schedule and a school map. If you wish to have a conference with
a particular teacher, please make an appointment through your child’s
assigned counselor. Counselors will be available in the cafeteria after
the PTSA meeting and throughout the Open House sessions.
The bell will ring at the start and at the end of each period with
a five-minute passing time between periods. Please keep to the above
schedule. Teachers will meet with their student’s parents in their
respective classrooms by periods. Any changes will be announced after
the PTSA meeting in the cafeteria.
Following this article is a blank “schedule of classes”
worksheet with spaces for the periods, teacher’s names, subject area,
and room number. Please have your child fill out the information for you.
Also included is a space to take valuable notes given by each teacher to
share with your child. Information may include: homework policy, project
due dates, exam schedules, etc. Maps of the campus will be available
that evening for your convenience or look for student volunteer guides
wearing “ASK ME” signs. Highlight the buildings and rooms with your
child’s assistance to plan your route for each class and to prevent
confusion during class changes.

HELPING HANDS HAWAII COLLECTION DRIVE
Moanalua High School, through its annual class competition monetary donation program,
will be supporting the Helping Hands Hawaii (HHH) Program, providing assistance for
the many needy families in Hawaii. In the past, we might have had some concern about
sending money to faraway places such as Southeast Asia, the U.S. Gulf region
thousands of miles away, or even paying for advertising, but the HHH Program helps
families right here in Hawaii, maybe even your neighbors! There are people here who
live in poverty all their life, every day! The CAP/Homeroom collection days will be:
• Monday or Wednesday, August 11 or 13, 2014
• Tuesday or Thursday, August 19 or 21, 2014
• Thursday, August 28, 2014
• Tuesday or Thursday, September 2 or 4, 2014
