As you would
have seen
through the
promotions at AFL
level this week,
this weekend’s
round of matches
has officially been dedicated to
recognising the valuable contribution
women have made and continue to
make to the sport across all levels.
The Northern Football League now
has six female Presidents leading
and directing our clubs (down from
nine in 2012). These include Joanne
Worsfield (Hurstbridge Juniors),
Donna Sandford (West Lalor JFC),
Nadine Christall (Wallan Juniors),
Jackie Aquilina (Mill Park JFC), Joy Lee
(Lalor Juniors) and Rebecca Hickmott
(Darebin Womens). Most of these
women have been long-time servants
of their clubs and have occupied
many other positions along the way.
Added to this, the NFL has over 250
women occupying official positions
at our clubs and one of the highest
concentrations of female umpires
at community level. Our netball
competition is developing into one of
the strongest community competitions
in the state and the NFL has been one
of the leaders in the development of
female only youth football.
Why the song and dance? Well,
female participation in our sport,
whether that is on or off field, has long
been neglected. Football clubs have
traditionally been male dominated
fortresses where female engagement
was limited. By neglecting this
demographic, we are alienating a
large proportion of people who have
a significant interest in the sport. Let’s
look at some of the stats at AFL level:
• 42% of football’s national television
viewing audience is female
• 35% of AFL and AFL club members
are female

• There are nearly 100,000 females
playing football from Auskick
through to senior grades
Break that down and the numbers are
massive. Millions of people watch AFL
football on television every year and
hundreds of thousands become AFL
or AFL club members. The number
of female players is increasing by
around 25-30% every year and new
competitions are being developed – all
building towards a planned national
women’s competition by 2020.
Clubs who are not prepared to adapt
their environment to be inclusive and
welcoming of women are not only
depriving themselves of a significant
number of people who have a genuine
(and sometimes new) interest in the
sport. They are depriving themselves
of skill set vital to the modern club. An
inclusive environment consisting of a
wide variety of backgrounds and skills
opens up many opportunities for clubs
and helps to create an attractive option
for sponsors, players and volunteers.
Within the NFL’s governance, the
addition of Nicolina Lademann and
Stella Pruscino to the Board has
brought immediate impact. Both
of these women have been active
in the NFL community, discussing
the issues that many women
face in the challenging roles they
are undertaking. The NFL would
strongly encourage clubs to take
the opportunity to acknowledge
and recognise the contribution
women have made to their football
club. It would also be timely for
clubs to consider ways in which
women could be contributors in
the future, as their presence and
interest is only going to grow.

MAGPIES EXTEND PERFECT RECORD

Montmorency overcame a Michael O’Loughlin-inspired
Greensborough to keep its unbeaten season intact.
The Magpies were at their attacking best in the 41-goal
shootout, outlasting the Boro 22.15 (147) to 19.9 (123)
in front of a huge crowd at War Memorial Park.
The ladder-leaders looked in complete control midway
through the second quarter when they led by 25 points,
before O’Loughlin – the man everyone had come to
watch – put on a clinic.
In the space of 15 minutes the former Sydney Swans
legend booted three goals and set up another as the
Boro booted six consecutive goals.
Greensborough took a two-point lead into half
time and a major upset looked on the cards when
O’Loughlin setup Josh Grubb for a goal in the opening
minute of the third quarter.
However, Montmorency lifted when most other sides
would have crumbled. The Magpies booted three
consecutive goals through Alex Chiocci, Chris Burton
and Wayne Pavitt to take a nine-point buffer.
Greensborough challenged again when Aron Burns and
Scott Barnett kicked goals one minute apart, however it
EAGLES WIN SIX IN A ROW

Whittlesea recorded an impressive 52-point victory
over Diamond Creek on Saturday at Coventry Oval to
stretch its winning streak to six matches.
In the second Division 2 top of the table clash between
the two sides, an Eagles win never looked in doubt after
smashing the Creekers in all areas.
The Eagles got off to a flyer kicking the first goal of the
match within the first minute thanks via Jeremy Page.
Diamond Creek then had more of the ball but missed a
number of scoring opportunities. Whittlesea responded
with its second of the afternoon through Ben Russell
after a beautiful switch of play out of defence.
The Creekers soon kicked their first goal through Luke
Simpson after getting the centre clearance, however the
Eagles recovered quickly. After a terrific diving chest mark,
Laurence Umali moved the ball quickly to Brenton Briffa
who kicked truly to give the visitors an 11-point lead.
A couple more goal exchanges saw out the first quarter
with Whittlesea holding a 13-point lead.

would be the last time the home side would be ahead.
Goals to Burton and Jesse Donaldson gave the Magpies
an 11-point lead at three-quarter time. Victory was
sealed when Ben Walton and captain Ryan Jackson
kicked the opening two goals of the final term.
The Boro was gallant to the end and attempted a number
of mini fightbacks, however Montmorency had the reply
to every challenge and finished with a 24-point win.
With three goals and high number of contested
possessions Ryan Jackson was best afield in the victory.
Importantly, Jackson was at his best when his side
looked to be struggling and he willed them back into
the contest.
Walton was the best forward on the ground and
finished with a game-high five goals. He played a direct
hand in Montmorency’s first four goals – kicking the
first two and then providing direct goal assists for both
Ben Haynes and Jackson.
Despite losing, the Boro had five different players
kick three goals, an exceptional achievement playing
against the league’s best team and without spearhead
Tim Bongetti who was a last-minute withdrawal.

Montmorency 22.15 (147)
The start of the second term saw the ball moving
quickly from both ends of the ground but to no
avail for either side. Marcus Webb finally kicked the
breakthrough goal midway through the term and this
extended the Eagles’ lead to 20 points.
But the Creekers got on the board in the second term
after Daniel Padget kicking a beautiful running goal
after his teammates got the ball out of the middle.
It was all we saw goal-wise for the second term with both
teams’ kicking a further four behinds as the half-time
margin remained the same as at quarter time. Rikki
Stephens missed a chance after the siren which could have
reduced the margin to eight points for Diamond Creek.
The Eagles blew the Creekers off the park in the
third term piling on 5.6 to the Creekers’ one solitary
goal. They dominated the centre clearances and the
possession count to extend their lead to 43 points.
The last quarter was much of the same, with the Eagles
outscoring Diamond Creek 5.1 to 3.4, enabling them to
record an impressive 52-point victory.

SAINTS KEEP TOP TWO HOPES ALIVE

Watsonia notched up its sixth win for season 2013
with a 20-point win over Thomastown at Main Street
Reserve on Saturday.
The Saints were able to pull away from the Bears in the
final term to record the 15.13 (103) to 11.17 (83) win –
their second victory over the second-placed team this
season.
Up forward, Jeremy Bennett starred with four goals,
while playing-coach Lochie Dornauf slotted three of his
own. Thomas Walliss and Brody Ricardi also chipped in
with two apiece.
For the Bears, Jacob Osei-Duro and James Mercuri
kicked three goals each with Domenic Mazza the only
other multiple goal scorer with two majors.
Watsonia found itself out to a quick lead after kicking
five of the first six goals in a dominant first term.
However, Thomastown kicked a late major to bring the
lead back to 18 points at the first change.
After a rev-up at the quarter time huddle, the Bears
turned the tables in the second term. The home side
played some inspired footy and was able to kick four
goals to one for the quarter to come within one point of
the Saints at the main break.
Both teams came out of the rooms fired up and ready
to go for the second half and in the third quarter the
contest was very even around the ground. Both sides

Macleod produced a dominant second half to beat Epping
by 73 points at Epping Recreational Reserve in Round 10.
After a tight and physical first half, the Kangaroos ran
riot after half time to finish with a 20.17 (137) to 9.10
(64) victory at Epping Recreation Reserve.
In a game that was crucial to the relegation battle,
Macleod proved to be a class above. It was its ability to
move the ball quickly, take risks and use the open spaces
of the large ground that led to the onslaught of goals.
Epping could not keep up as Macleod transitioned from
the backline through the corridor and into the forward
line in a matter of moments. This gave its forwards many

refused to let their opposition get any easy possessions
as the sides traded seven goals for the term.
Ultimately, Thomastown’s inaccurate kicking was a
major factor in the quarter. The Bears kicked 3.5 in the
third and went into the final quarter four points behind.
With the game and also a potential top two place in the
balance, Watsonia came out firing in the last quarter.
Unlike Thomastown in the third quarter, the Saints took
advantage of their opportunities and kicked five goals
from seven scoring shots to take the 20-point win.
Interestingly, Watsonia has now won seven of eight
quarters against Thomastown in their two outings this
year.
Tony Hogg had a sensational game on-ball and earned
best on ground honours. Thomas Walliss and Fraser Ellis
both playing stellar games and were also named in the
better players for the victor.
For the Bears, Jacob Osei-Duro was named best with
an equal team-high three-goal performance. Others
included in the best were ruckman Steven Cadby and
Osama Saad.
Next week, Watsonia will take on the ever-dangerous
Parkside who defeated St Mary’s by 32 points at Pitcher
Park in Round 11.
Thomastown will look to hold on to its position in
second place on the ladder when it takes on bottom
side Heidelberg West at Heidelberg Park.

one on one opportunities and chances to convert.
All of Macleod’s players bought into this frantic game
plan but it was David Adams who executed it the best.
He gained huge amounts of territory with bursts of
speed followed by long, probing kicks.
Adams was supported by Anthony Doherty and
Hayden Seivers who were not only explosive on the
outside but won plenty of hard ball and clearances. Up
forward it was Lachlan Considine who converted with
four goals. He had a field day at the feet of Macleod’s
bigger forwards.
The story was not so good for Epping. While Peter
Shepherd was able to add four goals to his total for the
season there were few other positives. Its pressure in
the first half was causing Macleod to make mistakes but

BERGERS REGAIN FORM
The Tigers led from start to finish in a polished
performance and jumped back into third place on
the ladder with the 12.11 (83) to 10.4 (64) result at
Warringal Park.
The inclusions of Brad Miller, Josh Houlihan, Michael
Finn and Justin Murphy – who has returned from the
Murray Football League – strengthened the Tigers after
last week’s shock loss to Lower Plenty.
Heidelberg’s clean possession and effective kicking into
the attacking 50m was the clear difference between the
two sides as Northcote Park struggled to move the ball
efficiently when in transition.
While the Tigers hit up leading forward targets, most of
the attacks inside 50m by the Cougars were bombed
high to packs, giving the Tigers defenders much more
opportunity to spoil.
Heidelberg coach Ryan Smith remained calm when
addressing his players at three quarter time with a lead
of 18 points. The lead could have been more if not for
poor kicking in front of goal in the third quarter.
His main message was to remain calm when playing
possession footy in order to stop any run on that could
hand the Cougars victory.
Once the Tigers got up by 31 points halfway through
the quarter, the message was sent out to slow the play
down. Unlike their fadeout loss to Bundoora when
leading in the last quarter, an improved Heidelberg
slowed the play down effectively, putting any last
quarter fight back from the Cougars beyond reach.
Tigers forward Lance Oswald was sensational kicking
four goals, including the sealer early in the fourth
quarter. Oswald provided the small forward option for
the Tigers in the absence of injured Mark Favrin.
Jess Sinclair was active up forward as well for
Heidelberg providing a lead up target outside the
forward 50m and also adding two goals for the Tigers.
With wave after wave of attacks into the Heidelberg
forward 50m, Oswald, Sinclair and Jordan Treloar
proved too much to handle for the Cougars defenders.
Along with these four players, Josh Houlihan and Brad
Miller were instrumental down back, both involved in
most scoring passages of play.
A key victory for Heidelberg was the role played by
Michael Brunelli who had the tough tagging role on
Cougars captain Bronik Davies. He succeeded in the
shutdown role as well as winning plenty of the ball
himself.
Up forward for Northcote Park it was Pat O’Connell
(three goals) and Joe Woonton as the key marking
forwards. Fellow key forward Koden Colman had a quiet
day with his only major coming in the first quarter.
Woonton and O’Connell fought all day but weren’t
presented with enough clean opportunities with a lack
of inside 50m entries. Fellow teammates Daniel Ledda,
Shaun Lorenzini and Ben McNiece were also amongst
the Cougars best.
Final score: Heidelberg 12.11 (83) def Northcote
Park 10.4 (64)
as soon as it eased up Macleod would do as it pleased.
Joshua Stavely and Beau Delcus were some of the
better players for Epping but there was only so much
they could do against increasing number of Macleod
players streaming through the midfield.
The signs were ominous early for Epping as the
Kangaroos managed five scoring shots before Epping’s
first goal, which came courtesy of Shepherd. Epping’s
pressure resulted in a turnover and goal before Anthony
Doherty gave Macleod a 10-point lead at the break.
Epping opened the second quarter with three goals
and the momentum had swung its way. However, after
all of Epping’s hard work Justin White kicked two of
Macleod’s next four goals to enter half time ahead – a
disheartening position for the home side.
After half time Macleod was quick to take its game to the
next level. In the space of two minutes the Roos kicked three
goals from centre clearances. This seemed to break Epping’s
spirits as its pressure dropped and the floodgates opened.
Macleod added three more goals to finish the third
quarter and then picked up where it left off in the last.
Considine kicked two goals for the term, as did Mathew
Pow, as Macleod finished with 20 goals.
Final score: Epping 9.10 (64) def by Macleod 20.17 (137)

Heidelberg again came through as victor over Northcote
Park in the second Grand Final re-match of the year,
winning a tightly contested game in perfect conditions.

MATCH REPORT VERSUS SANDRINGHAM DRAGONS
The Northern Knights have moved back into the
top 8 with a fighting eight-point victory over the
Sandringham Dragons on Saturday, June 22. In near
perfect conditions for football at Warrawee Park, both
teams started slowly with the Knights registering the
first goal of the match at the 11-minute mark through
Kyle McDonald. The Dragons then started to fire and
went on to kick four unanswered goals to finish the
quarter 21 points in front. Sandringham continued to
pull away scoring the first goal of the second quarter
before the Knights started their fight back. A goal to Tom
Grimes got the Knights back into the contest and then
late goals by Chas Bromley and Marcus Bontempelli saw
the honours shared for the term as the margin remained
at 21 points going into the long break. The arm wrestle
continued in the third quarter with both sides having
opportunities and it was the Knights through Liam
Bowkett and 23rd player Josh Doherty up forward, who
were able to score and reduce the margin to 14 points
heading into the final stanza. Two early goals from Liam
Hunt closed the gap for the Knights and they continued
on from there, finishing strongly to record an eight-point
victory. Matthew Haynes, Josh Turner and Liam Hunt
were key players through the midfield, Julian Soccio and
Sam Switkowski provided good run from the half back
line while Ciaran Porter worked hard creating a contest
inside 50m for the Knights. This Saturday, June 2 the
Knights take on the Dandenong Stingrays at Preston City
Oval and will be looking to build on this performance
and cement themselves in the top eight ready for the
run home into finals.

GREENSBOROUGH v HEIDELBERG
Two of the league’s oldest foes do battle this Saturday
when Greensborough takes on Heidelberg at War
Memorial Park.
It is the only Division 1 clash between two top five
teams and the result holds great significant to both,
with the Boro looking to sure up their place inside the
top five, while the Tigers are looking to keep their spot
inside the top three.
Despite a 4-6 win-loss record and defeats in their past
three matches, Greensborough still sits in fifth place on
the ladder – a position they have held since Round 4.
With both Eltham and West Preston-Lakeside also
sitting on four wins from 10 matches, the Boro appear
locked in a three-way battle over the next two months
for the final spot in this year’s finals series.
Most would agree the Boro have been the most
consistent and competitive of that trio, however,
football hands you no points for honourable losses and
Robert Hyde’s men have plenty of work ahead of them
if they are to feature in September this year.
The Boro have a 0-5 record against sides inside the
top four, with an average losing margin of five goals
indicating they have been competitive enough against
the competition’s best sides.
They pushed Northcote Park all the way in a 19-point loss
at Bill Lawry Oval in Round 6 and have taken it right up to
Bundoora and Montmorency over the past fortnight.
Last week’s 25-point loss to the undefeated Magpies
produced many positive signs, with the Boro looking
poised to pull off an extraordinary upset when Michael
O’Loughlin sparked a run of six consecutive goals
heading into half-time.
A late call-up to replace Tim Bongetti, Alex Rintoul
played his best game of the season and kicked
three goals, while the promise of Jack Johnston and
continued emergence of Tristan Stead offers plenty of
hope for the Boro in the next 18 months.
While the Boro side appears a little way from the best
sides in the league, there is no doubting that they are
getting closer to claiming a prized scalp.
Heidelberg recorded its most important win for
the season when it accounted for reigning premier
Northcote Park by 19 points on Sunday.
Needing to win to stay in touch with the top three and
a double chance in September, the Tigers led at every
change with Lance Oswald providing a spark with four
goals and Michael Brunelli playing a lock-down role on
Cougars captain Bronik Davies.
The Tigers aren’t playing to the peak of their power,
however they are still excellently placed to have a
massive tilt at this year’s premiership.
The return of experienced trio Josh Houlihan, Michael
Finn and Brad Miller understandably gave the side a lift
last week, as did the return of Justin Murphy for his first
game in yellow and black since the 2011 Grand Final
loss to Bundoora.
Mark Favrin and Justin Powick are two key players
who didn’t play last weekend and will only strengthen
the side, while Dale Nolan is yet to appear this season
because of a back injury.
This week’s game continues a tough five-week period
for the Tigers who are also preparing for consecutive
home games against Bundoora and Montmorency
before travelling to Montmorency Park to take on Lower
Plenty – the side which it was upset by in Round 9.

Round 10 was a truly great weekend of football and
following the five results there is now a genuine log-jam
for places inside the top three and also for fifth position.
The game of the round took place at War Memorial
Park where Greensborough – sparked by the brilliance
of Michael O’Loughlin – took it right up to undefeated
Montmorency. An upset loomed in the second
term when O’Loughlin booted three goals in quick
succession as the Boro took an eight-point lead right
before half time, however Ryan Jackson sparked a
Montmorency fightback as the ladder leader won its
tenth-consecutive match.
Buoyed by the return of Justin Murphy, Josh Houlihan,
Michael Finn and Brad Miller, Heidelberg produced
its biggest win of the season over Northcote Park to
move back into third place. The Tigers led from start to
finish in the second Grand Final rematch of the season,
quickly putting the shock Round 9 loss to Lower Plenty
behind them.
In other results, West Preston-Lakeside kept its finals
hopes alive with a gutsy seven-point win over Eltham,
Macleod jumped out of the relegation mire with a
big win over Epping and Bundoora ran riot in the last
quarter to demolish Lower Plenty for the second time
this year.
As a result, Bundoora, Heidelberg and Northcote Park
are in a three-way battle for second and third places
and a double chance in September. A loss last weekend
would arguably have ruined the Tigers chances of
finishing in the top three – making the 19-point victory
so crucial in their premiership assault.
Greensborough, Eltham and West Preston-Lakeside all
sit with four wins and six losses after the opening 10
rounds and will fight it out for fifth place and the final
spot in the finals. Macleod must produce something
special in the second half of the season to join the
mix, however for the time being the Roos look well off
featuring in September.
It all adds up to an exciting final two months of the
home and away season, beginning here in Round 11.
It’s a big week for Eltham who will look to atone for
last week’s somewhat surprising loss to West PrestonLakeside – the same team it beat by 53 points in Round
2. The Panthers would have jumped into the top five
had they beaten the Roosters, but shot themselves in

the foot with a woeful goal conversion of 7.21 from 28
scoring shots.
They now come up against ninth-placed Lower Plenty
who they fell to by 17 points back in Round 1. It has
proved to be a costly loss and this weekend’s game
looms as a really dangerous one in their quest to play
finals footy.
The Bears were made to pay for two lengthy lapses
against Bundoora last week – losing by 94 points in
a match they were competitive in for more than two
quarters. Billy Barden was his sides best with five goals.
Greensborough is again at home to a top three side
– this time against Heidelberg. The Boro are etching
closer to knocking over a premiership contender and
have beaten the Tigers once in each of the past three
years. It’s a huge match for both sides and the Tigers
will look to continue on last week’s four-quarter effort.
After last Saturday ending a four-game losing
streak, Macleod returns to De Winton Park to take on
Bundoora. The Roos will be looking to put in a better
showing than the last time they played the Bulls where
they lost by 129 points. The Bulls continued on their
ruthless way last week and have now won four matches
by margins in excess of 90 points. Only twice have they
scored less than 100 points in a match, one of those
occasions being a 53-point win over West Preston when
they still managed 94 points.
The final two matches see Montmorency host West
Preston-Lakeside, while last year’s Division 2 premier,
Epping, takes on the reigning Division 1 premier,
Northcote Park, at Bill Lawry Oval.
Montmorency withstood a valiant challenge from
Greensborough last weekend – winning from a position
where most others would likely have crumbled. The
Roosters will offer a great contest but will need to
improve on a 57-point loss to the Magpies in Round 1.
Northcote Park will be a red-hot favourite to hand
Epping its tenth loss of the season. The Cougars missed
an opportunity to lock-up a place inside the top three
but should rebound this week.

ELTHAM
To say that a win in this week’s game is vital is an
understatement. We need to atone for our dismal effort
against Lower Plenty in round 1. If not, we could probably
kiss goodbye any chance of a finals appearance.
SENIORS: Blew it against West Preston last week. How
do you expect to win kicking 7.21 with a great majority
of those behinds being set shots? Also, turnovers killed
us again, especially in the final quarter. Best: Gavan
Connelly, Andrew Sturgess, Luke McNeil.
RESERVES: Although West Preston got away to a clear
lead early, the Panthers were still within 10 points at
three-quarter time, but unfortunately we were unable
to go on with it in the last. Best were Jamie Doucas,
Trent McAllister and Travis Hede.
UNDER-19: Continued on their winning way with a
solid win by just over seven goals. The boys turned out
to be our only winners on the day. Kyle O’Sullivan, Jake
Bellman and Lachie Findlay were named best.

LOWER PLENTY
Today we travel to Eltham Central Park for a great day of
local footy and a chance to snap up another four points.
SENIORS: Apart from about 30 minutes of football we
were competitive with the Bulls last week. They got
hold of us for 10 minutes in the second quarter and
the last 20 minutes of the game, where the scoreboard
damage was prolific. Reecey played a quarterback roll
on Clokey who kicked most of his goals in junk time.
Billy jagged five, Cam and Darcy fed Benny Buller, Vass
and Kano who gave us plenty of drive around the ball.
RESERVES: Well done to the boys who pulled the Bears
jumper back on to help Steve and Shawry get a team
on the park. Everyone was rapt to see Dessy, Maxy,
Grigga and Tis back running around again at the Cave.
Andy Tregenza held the backline together, Thommo
played well in his first game back, Max got three while
Tommy Shaw, Walshy and Floydy kept the Bulls honest.
We got beaten by a seriously good seconds side but we
are all proud of the commitment and loyalty the boys
are showing to the footy club.
UNDER-19: In their best game for the year, the boys

what is looking to be a vital game. We have attempted

last game against Bundoora is testament to the hard

GREENSBOROUGH
The stakes were high last week but today is one of the most
important games for the club for a number of years. If we can
show the same effort as last week we are a huge chance.
SENIORS: There was a massive crowd and the boys
had a real go. Unfortunately we couldn’t quite sustain
the effort and although we lost the game we lost no
admirers. Best Players: J. Craker, J. Griffiths, T. Stead, A.
Rintoul, L. McQuilken, J. Johnston
RESERVES: The boys are really playing with a lot of spirit at
the moment and playing as a very strong unit. Best Players: T.
Veal, J. Rogers, D. Bryant, A. Lindstrom, A. Grimes, T. Forster
UNDER-19: Montmorency really served it up in the
first half but the boys showed their class to come
away convincing winners. Best Players: A. Cataldo, B.
Mossuto, J. Rowe, K. Bruhn, C. Pocock, M. Cvijetic
AROUND THE CLUB: The Micky O experiment was
nothing short of amazing. He is a quality person that
just happens to be gifted in football ability. I think
everyone at the ground was barracking for him and the
experience gained by those playing alongside him was
terrific. Thanks to Leigh and Grubby for their efforts.
HEIDELBERG
Last week we were host to Northcote Park for the one
and only Sunday game on the fixture and we had a
good crowd and were blessed with great conditions.
SENIORS: We led from start to finish in a must-win
game to keep in sight of the double chance as well as
earn a bit of redemption for the poor showing the week
before. With seven changes to the side and a few blokes
playing different roles we looked better than we have
for a while. Robbie Allan played his first senior game for
the club and carried on the good form that got him in
there. That was a good win against quality opposition
with a bit of pressure on everyone in the lead up. Things
won’t get any easier in the coming weeks so we can’t
afford to drop off.
RESERVES: With the depth of the list on the improve so
is the form of reserves. We got out to a handy lead early
and kept building on it until three-quarter time. To their
credit, the Parkers fought it right out, outscoring us in
the last quarter. Considering they knocked us over in
the first round it was a pretty handy turn around. Let’s
look forward to a much better second half of the year.

TONIGHT: All roads lead to Lilydale Town Hall to watch
Matt “Kamikaze” Kamolins in his first amateur fight. Big
numbers are expected as our very own diminutive Don
King, Brett Millsom, has booked a bus (the exact one
used in Priscilla Queen of the Dessert) to head down
to Lilydale. Positions on the bus filled up quickly as a
number of Matt “Pretty Boy” Kamolin’s closest friends
want to be there to barrack for Kamo, while equally
others want to barrack for his opponent.
NETBALL: A handful of narrow losses, two players
carted off to hospital and a convincing win, covered
Round 10. Team 1 suffered a competitive five-goal
loss to Fitzroy Stars A where the lead changed nine
times. Team 2 took the opportunity to stay in the top
four with a 14-goal victory over Laurimar. Team 3
had a tough task against undefeated St Mary’s A. The
girls were competitive initially but couldn’t match
their shooting power, losing by 27 goals. Team 4 was
determined and accurate until Epping Blue stole the
momentum in the third quarter and handed us a
seven-goal defeat. Team 5 lost to Watsonia D by one
goal, with the margin never more than four goals.
Finally, a last quarter resurgence by Team 6 couldn’t be
maintained and ended in a six-goal loss.
UNDER-19: Led at the first break, were going along
ok in the second quarter until the Cougars slammed
on four unanswered goals in six minutes to lead at the
long break. It was pretty even for the second half, so
apart from that period where we just lost interest in
what was going on we pretty much matched it with
them. We must eliminate those brief lapses.
$10,000 DRAW: Sunday, July 7 at the club, catered by
Luckman Catering. All players have tickets and must
sell them so that’s a good way to get yours. Always a
great day with a good chance to take home some cash.
LADIES LUNCH: Saturday, August 24. $70 per head
includes three-course meal (courtesy of Luckman
Catering) and drinks (beer, wine, champagne, softies)
from 12-4 pm. Tables of 10 available. Speak to Kylie or
Sharon for further details.
PLAYERS REVUE: More details next week. All players
must participate in some way so get the ball rolling boys.

MONTMORENCY
A massive crowd greeted us at War Memorial Park last
week and Micky O turned it on in the second stanza in
a fantastic quarter of footy. Fortunately though we got
the chocolates in the big one, but the Boro are a quality
opposition. Today we welcome the Chooks to our Nest
for what we hope will be good, tight game.
SENIORS: We jumped out of the blocks pretty well
and had six on the board, but Boro were able to kick
one right on the siren to be only two goals adrift. We
snuck away to a reasonable lead in the second before
O’Loughlin took the game by the scruff of the neck
to have the Slime ahead at the main break. We were
able to steady the ship in the second half and went on
to win by 25 points, albeit the story could have been
somewhat different if Micky O hadn’t left the field in
the last with a strained hammy. Well played Boro, you
have been the most competitive team we have played
so far. Rowie Nayna was BOG whilst Junior and JD were
very solid contributors. Benny Walts got a bag of five,
with three goals to Burto, whilst Michael Fitz had the
unenviable job of standing O’Loughlin and the young
man stood up to the task.
WEST PRESTON-LAKESIDE
The trip to Para Road provides us with plenty of
challenges today. A good opportunity for the reserves
and under-19s to consolidate positions in the top five
and a day where the seniors need a win to keep in
touch with a finals chance.
LAST WEEK: The under-19s gave the top side a head
start, and even though we played pretty well for three
quarters weren’t able to make any impression on the
scoreboard. Big Ben, Liam Elliott and Daniel Trafford
were named best in the loss. The reserves put in a
really solid performance and are looking the goods in
season 2013. A bit of depth is really showing with some
new faces named in the best – Stefan T, Nial and Zac
Watkins. In the main game it was pretty tight all day
and we produced a good last quarter to come from
behind and record a good win. Those with Kane Heaney
were holding the best player ticket at last. Rammers
and Ali were also very good in the seven-point triumph.
PREMIERSHIPS REUNION: Is definitely on Saturday,
July 20 from 7pm at the club. Entry is $20, so let the
usual suspects know that you are coming. We have

RESERVES: We rate Boro as the best side we have played
and were very pleased to be only 10 points adrift at quarter
time. We dropped away a little bit in the second to be six
goals down at the main break. We re-grouped and refocused at half time and really lifted our attack on the footy
to be within striking distance coming into the last. Boro
jumped us early in the final stanza, kicking four goals in four
minutes and it was game over. Better players were Tarks,
Guth, Jacko and Nick Fitz.
UNDER 19: Spinner was very proud of the efforts the
boys put in against a quality side like Boro. The game
was of a high standard and, if not for a 15 minute lapse
in concentration and some wasted scoring opportunities
in the third quarter, we could have given the game a real
shake. Our pressure and intensity was first class.
SOCIAL: Our major fundraiser, the $10K Draw, is
scheduled for Sunday, July 5. This is also a family day
so spouses and kids are welcome to come along for
minimal cost. See Mark ‘Bluey’ Smith, Mick Grattan or
any of the committee members for your tickets.
GO MONT!
added the 68 side for a 45th anniversary to join the
63-88-93-03 teams. It’s going to be big a night so make
sure you are there.
OTHER DATES: It is a good thing no one takes any
notice of this column, as the dates keep changing!!!! The
Poker night is July 18 and the Cash Draw is now back
to its original date. Don’t know where the President’s
Lunch has gone!!!!
70s & 80s NIGHT: Back at the club tonight for the big
junior club fundraiser. Dress up and enjoy a trip down
memory lane to a time when fashion was bad and the
music only so-so. A great time assured!!!!

Moon Function, after the Greensborough home game.

MACLEOD
Our first trip to Epping for several seasons produced
wins for the seniors and reserves and a close loss for the
under-19s.
SENIORS: After we thawed out Lincoln Withers from
his flight from Darwin, we hit top gear from midway
through the second term. It was tough going early
but the boys piled 13 goals to four after half-time.
Dave Adams had his best game for the season, Lachie
Considine snagged four majors and Hayden Seivers
provided great run from defence. After the game it was
all aboard the bus to the Kalkallo pub after someone
(no names, no pack drill) got the Donnybrook Hotel
booking mixed up! We’ll make it to the Donnybrook
another time but thanks to the staff at the Kalkallo for
looking after us at the last minute.
RESERVES: Notched their fifth win of the season and are
now within a sniff of the five. It wasn’t a commanding
performance but we’ll take the victory and with the
arrival of some new players, things are looking up for
Chubbs and his team. Brett Wilding bagged seven goals
and Richie Andrew showed his class.
BUNDOORA
A 94-point win over Lower sees us a game clear in
second going into this week’s match at Macleod.
SENIORS: Fifteen goals between Clokey (8) and Gaz (7)
saw us home easily. The forward line is as potent as ever
at the moment, with Clokey moving to 49 for the season.
Can you imagine the sight of the Grog Squad climbing the
fence on the outer side of Yulong and charging towards
their hero if he managed to kick 100? All without spilling
a drop I’d imagine. Gaz has come back well after the break
and is due for a screamer this week so look out. Pap, Dyso
and the Skipper all chimed in with two. Dyso was BOG
and is in red-hot form, Pap was good again, while the
Mitchell brothers worked hard.
RESERVES: A 98-point win and still on top undefeated.
There is real quality about this side and coach Penn
would be delighted with the performance so far.
Ferraro kicked five, Yobbo got forward and booted
three, as did Leroy, Aqua and Div. We have some
great players across all lines this year and grow with
confidence each week as we play together as a team.
Leroy was BOG, Joshy and Div were good, Yobbo and

UNDER-19: A few costly errors proved the difference but full
credit to the Epping boys on notching their first win for the
season. Ben Hines and Shane Doherty kept us in the contest.

Chopper’s comebacks are both on track and Ferraro has
found some great form after some top flight experience
earlier in the year. Two games clear on top and a lot of
competition for spots.
UNDER-19: Disappointing effort on the weekend.
Lost a game to a side lower than us and we now drop
back to the pack despite still sitting inside the top five.
The next month is very important and we can’t afford
another off day for the rest of the season. Tommy
was brilliant kicking five, Presto was good all day and
that man again Fingers Bennett was also in the best.
Oakman, Coco and Tommy rounded out the listed best
but we are still seeing the same names in the best each
week. The boys need some support and a solid team
effort if they want to go further this year. Big game this
week, let’s bounce back!

Division 1
NORTHCOTE PARK
It was a very cold start to the morning at Warringal Park last
Sunday, with ice on the ground upon arrival. The under-19
were unperturbed and registered a good win, however it
wasn’t a very good day for the seniors and reserves.
SENIORS: Heidelberg led from start to finish. We could
not get our running game going and produced way
too many turnovers throughout the day. Joe Woonton
and Patty O kicked three goals apiece and fought hard
all day, however we just could not get the ball down
quickly enough for the boys to do more damage. Ledda
and McNiece were flawless again. Back to fourth spot
and now the hard work has to start.
RESERVES: For three quarters Heidelberg kept us very
quiet and we did not have much use of the ball at all.
Starting the last quarter we were trailing 111-24, then
something clicked and we started looking for each
other and making good use of the ball. We managed
to outscore them by 18 points in the fourth quarter. It’s
hard work boys but we all need to stick fat and have a
red hot go for the remainder of the year.
EPPING
A great President’s Lunch was had last week with a
great attendance and the legendary Tommy Hafey
fantastic to listen to. Thanks to all those who attended.
Great to see the under-19s crack it for their first win last
week. Another big task today against Northcote Park.
SENIORS: Some good passages and a respectable
first half were let go in the third and fourth quarters
and Macleod was just too good. Good to see Shep
back bagging four goals and welcome to Johnno
Mullins whose pace will be a welcome addition for the
remainder of the season. Keep working at it boys. No
doubt we can match it, we just need a consistent effort
across four quarters.
RESERVES: A full bench and a star-studded line-up
proved no match against Macleod, after losing Toto
and Travolta just 10 minutes in. By the end of game
we ended up with 17 on field. We battled hard and
used the ball well in patches. The new and improved
Johnno dominated his first game. He certainly seems
an upgrade from the previous Johnno. Haynesy offered
the boys plenty of opportunity while Pencil’s solarium
tan saw him shine on the wing again.

UNDER-19: Our only win for the day. It did not start off
good with only 15 players at the ground 10 minutes
before the first bounce. Boys, we need to contact Tony if
we are running late or cannot make it. The 18 boys that
were committed produced a great game of footy to watch
first up. Going into the half time break we were 23 points
up with Michael Borg kicking three goals in the second
quarter. The second half was tight with Heidelberg kicking
7.2 to our 6.9. Better players on the day were David
Cappellari, Stefan Dezan and Nathaniel Leach.
THIS WEEK: We have Epping up next and we cannot
take this lightly in all three grades. All the best boys.
SOCIAL: Gold Cougar day this Saturday. For all the

UNDER-19: Reward for effort last week and all should
be proud of their achievement. Great efforts from
everyone, with special mentions to Jashar, Kearney,
Tyson, Juddy, Demps, Braddy and Mase. Best wishes to
Jordan Cugnetto for a speedy return. We move on now
and take last week’s form into today’s contest against
Northcote Park.
CLUB NOTES: Cam Brown auditioned for The Voice during
the senior game against Eltham, belting out a Britney
Spears classic “Oops I Did It Again.” He definitely didn’t
come from the same football background as Santoro. Matt
Mac was in trouble for his choice of pink shorts post game.
The votes go to the commentator 3- Simon Kelefarass,
2- Sherriff Wood with his badge in his shorts 1- Shepherd
and his border collie. Auskick will be played half time of the
seniors against Lower Plenty next week.

Whittlesea served a timely reminder to the rest of
the competition that their four quarter performances
are extremely powerful after disposing of challengers
Diamond Creek last Saturday.
The Eagles were wary of their first-half capitulation
against North Heidelberg last start, however carried the
form of their storming second half comeback into the
game against Diamond Creek, powering to a 35-point
half time lead. In the end, the Eagles would win every
quarter and would go on to double Diamond Creek’s
tally, winning 15.14 (104) to 7.10 (52) in a performance
which would have pleased coach Peter Bugden.
Andrew Fairchild extended his goal tally to 46 with
another haul of five majors, while Matthew Atta was
best on ground.
Lalor pulled off a stunning upset in defeating Mernda
at Schotters Road. The Bloods pulled out to a 19-point
lead at half time and held on for a five-point victory –
their best win of the season. The Demons kicked 4.11
from their final 15 scoring shots and may come to
rue this loss later on in the season in a hammer blow
to their finals aspirations. Scott Dowell kicked three
goals for the victors, who also had Marc Ventura and
Todd Hughes put in excellent performances in a result
which could prove to save Lalor from Division 3 football
in 2014. Andrew O’Reilly kicked two goals for the
disappointing Demons.
An 11-goal to six second half allowed North Heidelberg
to snap its three-game losing streak against
Hurstbridge at Ben Frilay Oval, prevailing by eight
points in a shootout, 17.11 (113) to 15.15 (105). The
Dogs trailed by 21 points at half-time but Shane Harvey
once again asserted himself on the game, kicking nine
goals and moving to 63 on the goalkicking leaderboard
from 10 games. At the other end, Brett Woodhouse
kicked five goals, and Nick Milne three. It was an
important win for the Dogs, who now move two games
clear of the bottom four.
Fitzroy Stars withstood a withering South Morang
onslaught before prevailing by nine goals, though
inaccuracy played its part in the 18.24 (132) to 12.5 (77)
victory. The Lions burst out of the blocks, kicking the
opening five goals, before the Stars started to assume
control. Patrick Davis kicked six goals in the victory,
and his side was also well served by Alex Isailovic and

Mungara Brown, whilst Luke Manning was the Lions
best, kicking three of the their 12 goals.
The pick of today’s Round 11 games sees Diamond
Creek travel to Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval to take on
Fitzroy Stars. The Creekers will be desperate to reverse
their loss at Preston City Oval earlier in the season.
The winner will assume an all-important top-two spot
which would ensure a double chance at the end of the
season, so a victory in this week’s game is crucial for
both sides’ promotion hopes.
Hurstbridge and Mernda face off with the victor to sit
fifth on the ladder and remain in contention for finals’
action, a fate which is quickly fading away with fourthplaced North Heidelberg leading both by two games.
The Demons, much like the Creekers, will be looking
for revenge, having let a four-goal lead slip against the
Bridges at home earlier in the season. Playing once
again at home, the Bridges will look to rebound after
letting go a golden opportunity to put pressure on the
Dogs’ finals ambitions.
After winning its first game since mid-May, North
Heidelberg welcomes old rival Lalor to Shelley Street.
The Dogs are looking to maintain their grip on a top
four spot, as well as stay in the hunt for the double
chance. The Bloods will be buoyed by their last start
upset against Mernda and ran the Dogs right to the line
in their first encounter this year.
Meanwhile, South Morang travels to Whittlesea looking
to put in a better effort than the one which saw them
lose by 95 points in Round 1. Following Lalor’s shock
victory over Mernda, a win is required if the Lions want
to stay in Division 2 next year. However, the Eagles will
be heartened by their big victory over Diamond Creek
last start which has given them a two-game break on
the rest of the competition in top spot.

FITZROY STARS
Playing South Morang away is always a tough
assignment and we all prepared for a real contest.
RESERVES: Our reserves got off to a flyer and were
in control from the beginning. Nashy was great in the
ruck, giving Jase, Kain, Jordy and Joshy first use of the
ball. This in turn gave DT terrific delivery and he didn’t
let anyone down, again kicking nine and dishing many
more off. The end result was a 91-point victory. The
reserves are travelling well and Leigh and his boys are
looking like they will be seeing September action.
SENIORS: A whole different ball game. South Morang
jumped out to a six-goal flyer before our boys got
the sleep out of their eyes. The young, enthusiastic
opposition showed us the meaning of endeavour and
led seven goals to three at the first break. After settling
down and fixing our structure we took control. We piled
on 40 scoring shots to South Morang’s eight in the final
three quarters. The only blemish was our conversion
rate which was a dismal, 18.24. We will not have this
luxury against the other top sides if we are to be
competitive late in the season. Our better players were
Alex, Corey Wang, Mouse and Mabo, with Patty kicking
DIAMOND CREEK
We travel to Sir Douglas Nicholls for two tough matches
against third-placed Fitzroy Stars. Both the seniors and
reserves will be looking to rebound after last week
losing to Whittlesea. Meanwhile, the under-19s get set
to take on Warringal Hawks away from home.
SENIORS: The game was a bit of a reality check for us
as we came up against what is arguably the strongest
and best side in Division 2. There were periods of play in
the first half where we controlled the football without
capitalising on the scoreboard, and unfortunately when
you give the ball back to a well structured, disciplined
side, they will ultimately make you pay. Full credit to
the opposition for their dominance, especially in the
second half. The challenge for us now is to bounce back
quickly and give ourselves another opportunity against
the competition yardstick.
RESERVES: We came up against Whittlesea on a perfect
day for football and there was nothing in it at half
time. Whittlesea were applying the pressure and took
advantage playing some good football and we went
down by three goals. It was good to see some young

six and Mungara kicking four which continues their
love-hate relationship. This is one the funniest working
relationships in history.
NETBALL: Our A grade side had a fantastic win
against Greensborough 33-28. Our B grade girls had
an unfortunate loss against Hurstbridge 14-32 and our
C grade girls smashed Reservoir 34-12. Well done and
let’s start to see more of our footballers at the games.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: There are a few theories going
around behind the Richie Bamblett scandal. The facts
are Richie has bruised ribs and found himself on the
deck at a get together last week. It has been suggested
that Chin’s chin kinged him from 10 yards away or the
phantom rode through and cleaned him up. Perhaps
the Junction ghost came down the stairs and Richie
fainted? It all sounds very suspicious and everyone is
unanimous in awarding Richie the award for the first
time in his career.
THIS WEEK: An enormous week for both sides. The
reserves can go on top with a win and the seniors can
go one game clear in second. What a great position for
the club to be in and hopefully both our sides will be
victorious on such a big day.

UNDER-19: The under-19s took on an undermanned
Hurstbridge at home last Saturday and although the
boys did not put in their best display, they did still win
by over 150 points. Best in the victory were Perko with
nine goals, Ollie who kicked another seven and Watto
and Searly who performed well over four quarters.

NORTH HEIDELBERG
We take on the old foe Lalor who will be brimming
with confidence after doing us a favour and knocking
Mernda off. First time around we snuck in luckily in
both games so we need to come switched on.
SENIORS: Coming off three straight losses and our
spot in the four hanging by a thread, saying we needed
a win was an understatement. With their tails up,
Hurstbridge came out all guns blazing. We were beaten
by a more desperate and attacking team who, but for
some easy misses on goal, could have put us away by
half time. A fair reason for us only trailing by 21 points
was our newest recruit Andre Habchi who was fantastic
with his endeavour and approach at the ball. A spray
from Rudy at half time did wonders and we kicked the
first four goals of the third to hit the front, with Greeny
and Harvs hitting the scoreboard. Hurstbridge didn’t lay
down and it became goal for goal as both sides failed
to break away. Down back Ali and Trent did a great job
with Blake and Paz starting to win the ball through
the middle. With an 11-point lead at the last change
we got the first goal but Hurstbridge kept coming and

After pulling off a great win at Mernda, the boys now
look forward to the challenge of travelling to Shelley
Street to take on our old rival North Heidelberg.
SENIORS: Took on Mernda at Mernda in what was to
be a memorable game for the club. In almost perfect
conditions, other than a bit of mud on the ground, Lalor
started off well kicking seven goals to two in the first
half. We looked like running away with it in the second
half when we went in at the main break, but that was
not the case. Mernda rallied and piled on four majors
to put them within a goal going into the last quarter.
We had to dig deep in the fourth and it was goal for
goal late in the quarter. Mernda hit the front with about
two minute to go but the Bloods drove the pill down
to their forwards and the always reliable Hooch took
a screamer and snapped the winning goal to ensure
we were winners by five points. It was the club’s first
win for seven games and puts us a game clear of South
Morang. It was great to see the under-19 boys who
were elevated against Mernda do the club proud.

some silly football kept letting them back in. When
the siren went it was more relief than joy that we got
a win. Full credit to the boys for finding a way to win.
Unfortunately, S.K tweaked his hammy again in his first
game back. For the past three months Sean has been
doing everything in his power to get his body right and
he sets a great example to the rest of the boys with his
professionalism. We wish him a speedy recovery.
RESERVES: Again we were looking for a win to get
our season back on track and playing against a team
below us on the ladder you would assume we would
have been in with a decent chance. Taking no credit
away from Hurstbridge, out 62-point loss was far from
satisfactory. We have some injuries but we also have
some very good players so a 110% improvement is
expected this week.
FUNCTIONS: July 13 - Ladies Day: $25 per head
includes finger food and entertainment; August 3: $10K
Gold Bonanza: $125 admits two and includes beer,
wine, soft drink, finger food and entertainment.
RESERVES: Were right in the game at half time when
they trailed by 14 points but were outscored by three
goals in the third quarter and ended up going down by
23 points to Mernda.
UNDER-19: The under-19 boys had the bye last Saturday
but return to the action this week when they take on
fourth-placed Watsonia. A must-win game.
TODAY: We travel to North Heidelberg’s ground this
week and are looking for another big scalp.

WHITTLESEA
A most impressive weekend away from the Nest with
all three football squads recording important wins.
Disappointingly, the netball girls suffered some close
losses but we expect the girls to rebound this Friday night.
SENIORS: The demand for a four-quarter performance
has not only been felt internally, but the pressure
and questions had been raised externally. Much to
Pete and Brad’s pleasure, the boys put together their
best four-quarter effort for the year and put some
breathing space between ourselves and the rest of the
competition with a commanding win over Diamond
Creek at the Creek. It was a team effort all around from
the boys so no individuals mentioned, but the task
remains the same this week at we return home for the
first time in a month to tackle Morang. Nothing less
than four quarters is expected.
RESERVES: Gary’s lads also recorded their best
performance of the year with a hard-fought 18 pointwin over Diamo. Stevie D wound back the clock with
a haul of eight, Byron continued to impress and surely
Max, after another stellar performance, can’t be far
away from senior selection. Lots of pressure and depth
SOUTH MORANG
Last week we faced a final contender in Fitzroy Stars at
The Lakes Reserve.
SENIORS: The challenge for the senior boys is to be
competitive week in and week out and who knows
what will happen. An upset was on the cards when we
came out and kicked the first five goals of the game. The
boys were up and about having a real crack. We always
knew Fitzroy were going to fight back and it was just a
case of whether we could hold on and keep up with the
tempo. Unfortunately we couldn’t and they kicked away
for an easy win in the end. If we can play four quarters
of consistent footy we can cause a few headaches. Best
players: Toady, Killa, Haggy and Johnny K.
RESERVES: The twos need to keep winning to have any
chance of making the finals. With numbers dropping off,
we needed to come out and have a crack against a finals
contender. It was not the case though and all King Gary
could do is watch as Fitzroy ran over the top of us from
the first bounce. It was a disappointing performance
in end, with a lack of commitment and fitness a major
factor. Best players: Rizza, Paps, Conti, Sandy.

UNDER-19: It’s rare that you come away bewildered
from a 21-goal win, but that’s exactly how many felt
after Saturday morning. Joffa once again brought his
own footy to the game and Choc is in his best form
since arriving for the club. It was a patchy performance
at best and with the week off before tackling St Mary’s
it’s important that the boys get in the right frame of
mind quickly. Finals beckon but there is still a long road
to travel and that journey commences now.

UNDER-19: With a lack of numbers, the 19s were
always going to struggle against one of the top teams
in Whittlesea. There were not many positives coming
from the game and in then end were comprehensively
beaten by a more determined and skilful opposition:
Best players: Moofa, Hammer, Jesse W, Muscat.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: This week’s nomination was not
nominated by me. But many of the boys suggest that
Pommy should get the award for taking his girlfriend to
the movies after training on Thursday night instead of
hanging around with the boys. I would personally say
that’s keeping the Mrs happy is a smart thing to do, but
apparently the boys think you’re a tool.
MAN O MAN: Just remember the biggest event of the
ear – Man o Man – is on July 6. Not many tickets left
so see Wardy ASAP as no ticket sales are available on
the night. For those of you that have purchased tickets
already, doors open at 6:30pm and show starts at
7:30pm sharp.

HURSTBRIDGE
This week we welcome Mernda to Ben Frilay Oval. The last
time we met it was a tight tussle in both matches that saw
us win the seniors, but lose a very winnable game in the
reserves. We look forward to getting two wins this weekend.
SENIORS: After leading early, we let Nth Heidelberg
back into the game last week, and you can’t give a
team like that any sort of opportunity. They were able
to finish the game out better than us and took away
a vital four points we needed at this time of the year.
Knowing the tight battle we had with Mernda earlier
this year, we have worked hard on the track to ensure
we can put together a four-quarter performance and
get back on the winning path.
RESERVES: For the first time this year against a quality
opposition the whole team put together a four quarter
performance. It is hard in a win like this to point out
stand out performances, but that is a problem we are
quite willing to accommodate for the rest of the year. We
hope to continue this form into our clash with Mernda.
UNDER-19: Very disappointing is all to be said. Beef
wants to commend, Harps, Dec, Mitch, Glove, Ryan, Riley,
MERNDA
Incredibly frustrating. The gap between our best and
our worst is far too great.
SENIORS: Full credit to Lalor. They came out a lot
hungrier than we did, and as a result we’ve probably
granted them a stay of execution from Division 2. As
I said, the gap between our best (like we saw against
North Heidelberg) and our worst is far too great and
when we look back on the season this loss, along with
the Hurstbridge game, will be very costly. Anyway, Akka
kicked a couple and was our best, Timmy and Keegan
played well also but you can’t deny that this was a very
disappointing loss.
RESERVES: Better news in the reserves where we were
able to turn around our Round 1 result and win by 23
points. Even I had a run, and what’s even more stunning
was that I had a kick. We were 41 points up during
the third quarter but it looked as though Lalor would
overrun us during the last. Thankfully, Johnno’s posttraining tradition of kicking goals from about 25 metres
out actually paid off as he (only just) snagged one
from a free late on to secure victory. Rizza kicked three,
Ads, Tambo and Timmy Ando kicked two each, whilst
Cawsey and Leppa was amongst our best (PS: Rocket, I

Bruiser, and Sammy for turning up and playing well. This
kind of performance cannot be tolerated again.
NETBALL: The girls took the court against Fitzroy this
week and went out strong-minded and determined.
Leading in all four quarters the Bridgettes came out
with an excellent win.
SOCIAL: Hurstbridge Football Club will be holding
its Major League Poker Nights, on Wednesday nights.
Doors open at 6pm, and registrations go till 8pm with

EYE IN THE SKY:

TODAY: Hurstbridge at Hurstbridge and we owe
them a hell of a lot from last time, where we only had
ourselves to blame for giving up a four-goal lead to lose
it. Hurstbridge played very well against North last week
and we have to play our very best game to beat them in
both grades.
TOOL OF THE WEEK: As I said, I had a run against Lalor
in the seconds. Late in the game though you couldn’t
deny that I earned myself the Tool of the Week with my
shocking effort at trying to kick a goal from a tackle
which I wasn’t too sure whether it warranted holding
the ball. Anyway, the crowd urging me on, a set shot
from about 30m out, and what do I do? Slip and shank
it sideways. Yep, I did well.

Eleven rounds have now elapsed in the 2013 Division
3 season and it now looks as though the top four teams
have clinched their place in this year’s finals series.
Despite their still being eight rounds of the home and
away season still remaining, the top four teams now
have a three-game advantage from the chasing pack
and it would take something miraculous from either
of St Mary’s or Parkside to reach the finals from their
current position.
As has become the custom this year, Round 11 threw up
a number of surprises. Watsonia ended Thomastown’s
three-game winning streak by rolling the Bears for
the second time this season, while Parkside put a
forgettable fortnight behind it to triumph over St Mary’s.
The biggest match in Round 12 takes place at Crispe
Park where fourth-placed Reservoir takes on ladderleader Panton Hill.
Reservoir failed miserably in its first match against the
Redbacks this season when it booted just four goals in
an 81-point drubbing. There is no doubt the Mustangs
will be priming themselves for a better showing this
time around, however recent form says they will need
to improve dramatically to match it with this year’s
premiership favourites.
Panton Hill moved eight-points clear in first place after
last week’s 68-point win over Heidelberg West. After
a close first half, the Redbacks booted 12 goals to two
after half-time to record their sixth win by greater than
60 points for the season.
It was the younger brigade which led the way in last
week’s win with Tyler Scarce, Jeremy Gercovich and Tim
Duckworth all named in the best players, while Jonathon
Byron booted four goals – his biggest haul for the season.
The win was a fitting way for the Redbacks to celebrate
skipper and club legend Will Box’s 200th A-Grade game.

Heidelberg West plays host to Thomastown, a match
which marks the end of a tough month for the Hawks
who have placed the competition’s top four sides
in successive weeks. The Hawks have shown plenty
of positive signs in the past fortnight – challenging
Reservoir in Round 10 before trailing Panton Hill by just
one goal at half time last week.
Thomastown missed the opportunity to stretch its
buffer in second spot when it slipped to 20-point home
loss to Watsonia. As a result, the Bears are equal on
points with both the Saints and Reservoir and a massive
two months now awaits as the three sides fight for a
double chance in the finals.
Similar to their first outing against Watsonia,
Thomastown trailed at every change in last week’s
loss. Behind by just four points at three quarter time,
the Bears were outscored by five goals to two in the
final quarter. Jacob Osei-Duro tried gamely all day and
finished with three goals, while Steven Cadby also
toiled hard.
Having now won three of its past four matches,
Watsonia heads in to this week’s danger game against
Parkside as favourite. Jeremy Bennett and Lochie
Dornauf combined for seven goals in last week’s superb
away win, while Tony Hogg and Tom Walliss were also
influential in the victory.
We’re still none the wiser as to who the real Parkside is.
The Devils’ inconsistency is their only consistent feature
this year. After being smashed by both Panton Hill and
Thomastown in their previous two matches, the boys
from Pitcher Park responded with a 32-point win over
St Mary’s – a result which will likely end the Burra’s
hopes of playing in a third successive finals series.
The Devils looked like being walloped again when
they trailed by four goals at quarter time, but booted
17 goals to nine thereafter. Linchpin Darren Gresham
was again best afield, just taking the honour ahead of
Michael Thompson who kicked three goals.

RESERVOIR
Today we welcome Panton Hill to Crispe Park. We’re fresh
off the bye and with a number of players back from injury
we must redeem the hiding the Hills gave us in Round 5.
The reserves also need to continue the good football
played over the past few weeks if they are to topple
third-placed Panton Hill who. The under-19s are yet to
win a game and come up against South Morang who
has won two and played a draw.
SENIORS: Eight changes for the game against
Heidelberg West – including three in for their first
senior game – indicated the coach was prepared to
take risks with players who were prepared to train and
play for the jumper. Whilst the margin was 31 points in
the finish, Heidelberg West gave us a very hard contest.
Discipline was an issue for both teams and players
MUST accept the umpires’ decisions.
RESERVES: Made it four wins in a row after beating
Heidelberg West who smashed us in Round 3. Having
senior players of the calibre of Dallas King (eight goals
in three games), Kael Beaumont and Steven Hiho helps.
UNDER-19: Coming off a thumping from Whittlesea two
weeks ago, things only got worse when the boys could only

We were in the unusual position last week of being the
home team but playing on the opposition’s home ground.
SENIORS: West had come to play and led for most of the
first quarter as we turned the ball over too frequently.
We tried to lift in the second quarter but still couldn’t get
our game going. It was the efforts of Jeremy Gercovich
at full back and Tim Duckworth that kept us in the game.
However, things started to go our way in the third quarter
with Joffa Byron moving forward and kicking goals as well
as Ryan Byrnes slotting a couple in his first senior game of
the year. Simon Amore and Tyler Scarce provided the run
through the middle and Daniel Keen started to come into
the game. We cruised in the final quarter to finish with a
68-point win.
RESERVES: Needed to bounce back after a couple
of losses and with some changes in the side were
able to assert their dominance from the start. Nathan
Grimshaw played his first game since early in the
season and was named best. Matt Layt thrived in the
conditions on the wing with sweeping support from
Simon Gunn. Lucas Groves was the key forward with six
goals. A vital game today against Reservoir.

200 GAMES: Will Box clocked up 200 senior games last
Saturday. Will is a Panton Hill local who played his junior
football at Hurstbridge. After under-19s, Will returned
to Panton Hill and thrived under the coaching of Garry
Ramsay. He played a key part in the Hills’ 2004 finals
campaign with a tremendous game in the finals victory
against Greensborough. The same year Will won the
Division 2 league Best and Fairest. Will has played a key
part in the Panton Hill sides over the past 12 years, winning
the Best and fairest for two times, coming runner-up four
times and third place three times. Will was centre half back
in our 2000-2009 ‘Team of the Decade’ and was named at
centre half back in the NFL team of the year five times. Wil
also received life membership at the club last year. Will is
the current captain of the club and an inspiration to the
younger players around him. Thanks for playing such a key
role in the club Will.
TRIVIA NIGHT: Tonight at the Panton Hill Hotel. Be
there by 6:45pm sharp. Cost is $40 which includes
two-course meal and the trivia hosted by Craig “Huggy”

HEIDELBERG WEST
Today we welcome Thomastown to Heidelberg Park for
the first time since 2008.
SENIORS: Last week was a game of two halves that
left everyone scratching their heads. The first half was
sensational with our pressure and commitment at
season-high levels, leaving us just a kick behind the
premiership favourites. However, we were not able
to produce those levels in the second half. As our run
started to dry up so did opportunities to score and
Panton Hill capitalised, blowing the match wide open. If
we bring the same effort for four quarters this week the
four points will be ours for the taking. Once again the
same names were in the best and it’s time to see a few
new names step up over the final weeks of the year.
RESERVES: Our first and third quarters were a positive
and a strong reminder that we can play some great
footy when we play to Dave’s instructions. Best players
were Granty, Gunners, Wambeek, the President, Shelts
and Jase Butera. The coaches have had some headaches
at the selection table of late with injuries taking their
toll and the numbers to select a side from have been
low. We need our reserves to commit strongly for the
THOMASTOWN
In one of the biggest days of the year so far, Watsonia
came to the Bears’ Lair in a battle for the top echelon of
the ladder. The results were very mixed.
SENIORS: A week is a long time in footy. Having ground
out a hard-fought victory the week before, we came
into the game against Watsonia full of confidence. Yet,
once again, we let ourselves down badly. There was
perhaps only one quarter where we played the way we
wanted to. Now we find ourselves back in the pack with
a lot of work to do. It’s in our hands…..
RESERVES: The battle for top spot was always going
to be a tough encounter. We toughed it out across four
gruelling quarters and, to the boys’ credit, came away
with a resounding seven-goal victory. However, there
is still much work to do. In a competition as tight as this
one, there is certainly no room for complacency and
plenty of room for further improvement.
NETBALL: Yet another great week for the netball girls
as they make their late-season charge. Both the A and B
teams had big wins. Well done, girls. As always, please
keep up the support of the ladies every Friday night.

WARRINGAL HAWKS: Another challenge ahead for
our youngsters coming up against Diamond Creek. The
boys continue to develop each week and we have had
five players receive opportunities at senior level with
another five players getting a taste of reserves football
at different stages of the season. Best of luck boys.
FUNCTIONS: The club’s next social function is Bogan
Bingo on the July 6. It’s Bingo with balls! The cost of
entry is $25 per person or $200 for a table of 10. The
night is hosted by the Bingo Bogans themselves and
there will be prizes for the best dressed bogan, raffle
prizes and a silent auction.

last week after being in front for much of the game.

SOCIAL NEWS: Our next function is the Gents Night on
Saturday, July 6 after our home game against Reservoir.
Cards, drinks, food and entertainment throughout the
night. This promises to be another great night at the

WATSONIA
A great win by the boys over Thomastown in a back
and forth contest full of highlights.
SENIORS: There was a couple of late withdrawals, with
Hoddoz and Coop pulling out in the morning. This
allowed Brodermatt to come in, whilst Eldon came
back into the side after his extended stay at the couples
retreat with Macca. By all reports, Shane thought he
would still receive his pay check if he withdrew on
the morning of the game. The Decoy again managed
to lead the goal-kicking and again he stood on some
blokes shoulders just for fun. The speccies are actually
getting a bit repetitive Jezza, so maybe start trying
to add some more moves to your aerial repertoire. I
owned a trampoline as a kid so I’d say I’m more than
qualified to teach you a few moves and Hoddoz can
surely share some of his fly-kicking expertise. Doorknob
struggled and played himself forward in the last quarter
in an effort to get a kick, giving away one of the ugliest
push in the backs ever seen.
RESERVES: Ugly. In the top of the table clash we were
definitely outdone for skill and composure – two words
not often associated with Division 3 reserves. Clarkey
played well, reminding us of that other time he played a

The boys will be looking to make it two on the trot they
travel to Watsonia.
SENIORS: Great team effort last week with the boys
coming back to get the win after being challenged by
St Mary’s. Jamie Gresham was a big inclusion and with
Muir and Nick back from injury the side looked a lot
more healthy than it has in previous weeks. Another big
game today against the division’s big improvers.
RESERVES: A tough day at the office last week with
the side severely undermanned. We had a special visit
from Raf at training during the week and although
it’s hard to work out what his going on about half
the time, the boys have all got new nicknames which
should hold them in good stead today. A few new faces
today should see the side put in a more competitive
performance.
SOCIAL: Thanks to Alber for selling raffle tickets last
week. His enthusiasm led to record sales and he even
offered some tickets to the St Mary’s coaching staff
during the game before being told what he could do

good game. Jimmy Harris was another who produced the
goods, however he let all his hard work go to waste when
the waaahmbulance had to get him off the ground.
UNDER 19: The young fellas played Warringal and did
the job easily. Tom Bowman had a tough day at the
office making mud pies in the back half, whilst Patty
Crough continued his good form jagging six. My man
Sutho had another cracker and is surely knocking on
the door for senior selection. Rodbox was named best
afield despite not affecting the scoresheet, which
makes me suspicious.
SOCIAL: Team Google – led by Mick and Dougie –
represented the footballers with pride, winning the
Netball Club Trivia. Tonight, one-time Watsonia dummy
spitter Kamo will be taking on Brock Lesnar in his first
amateur boxing fight in Lilydale.

Hopefully he has come back down to earth today and
stops picking fights on his keyboard.
TRIVIA NIGHT: Trivia night is tonight so make sure you
get down to the Grandview from 7:30pm for what will
be a great night. It’s $50 per person which includes
entry to trivia, beer, wine, soft drink and nibbles.
Noodles, the triple threat, will be hosting the night and
will be showing off all three of his talents. Tables of
eight to ten so make sure you get in early.
LADIES NIGHT: Ladies night is just around the corner
with some big name acts confirmed from both
teams for July 13. Rumour has it PB6 will be making a
comeback minus a few of the original members. More

Whistle Whispers
Race 9 at The Meadows was the feature race with the
race being named Northern Umpires and the favourite
won convincingly. Clearly that didn’t seem to excite
former goal umpire coach Shane Herbert who was
caught falling asleep during the night. A few of us
should have taken that idea and called it an early night
to cut back on the losses.
Spectators at Thomastown may have thought they
were in a senior citizen’s centre with the average age of
the A-Grade panel being around 60. Old age may have
slowed down their reaction time with Ross Dodd being
hit by the ball, Tony Mahony being clean up by a player
and George Smith falling over. Be careful guys, at that
age it has been said bones can become fragile.
Milestone, milestones, milestones they’re coming at
us thick and fast with three major milestones in the
past few weeks. Liam Lenten reached 200 two weeks
ago, Brian Moore reached 250 A-Grade games at Lower
Plenty last weekend and this weekend we have Daniel
Philp reaching 100 A-Grade games. Numbers have
been crunched and audited to make sure it is 100 this
week and not last week as he is trying to make us all
believe. Congrats on the achievement everyone.
SOCIAL NOTICES: Following on from the successful
dinner to celebrate the 300 A-Grade Game milestones
of five of our umpires in 2012, this year we are going for
Round 2 on Saturday, July 27 to celebrate Terry Maher’s
600th A Grade, Adam Walker’s 300th A-Grade and Liam
Lenten’s 200th A-Grade. It will be at Garvey Pavilion
from 7:30pm. $20 a head includes a sumptuous 2
course meal. This event is open to all current and past
umpires, particularly anyone who has umpired with our
guests of honour over their journeys. As this is a catered
event, final numbers are required by Wednesday, July
24. Please complete the attendance sheet under the
noticeboard at training, or email [email protected].

THE JUNIOR WEEK THAT WAS – ROUND 10 WRAP

Round 10 of the Under-17 Blue competition saw
third-placed Montmorency scrape past West Preston,
the final margin being only three points. The Magpies’
Jake Francis booted four goals in a best on ground
performance whilst Adam Valeri was best for West
Preston, kicking two majors.
Hurstbridge had the bye, while Research moved up
from the bottom of the table with a 26-point win over
Epping. Ladder-leader Eltham continued its unbeaten
start to the season, beating Mill Park by 12 points to
remain atop the ladder.
In the Under-19 Youth Girls competition, ladderleader Diamond Creek Womens kept a side scoreless
for the second week in a row, defeating bottomplaced Lalor Stars by 218 points. The result ecliped the
previous highest margin in the competition by one
point. Darebin Falcons defeated South Morang by 35
points. Also, recording a win was Montmorency who
defeated Keon Park by 29 points.
The Under-16 Blue competition saw first-placed
Research extend its recent winning streak to four,
defeating second-placed Diamond Creek in a top of
the table clash. Jordan Sacco and Brayden Fiorini were
best for the Searchers, with Fiorini booting four majors
whilst the Creekers’ best were Darcy Macpherson and
Jacob Booth.
Around the grounds, Yarrambat defeated West Preston
Blue by eight points to record its third win of the
season, whilst South Morang also recorded a win when
it defeated Montmorency by 41 points to move within a
game of the top two.
The Under-15 Blue competition saw Whittlesea defeat
Eltham by eight points to retain second place in a neckand-neck performance. Ladder-leader South Morang
Blue beat Diamond Creek by 45 points to maintain its
three-game winning streak.
Also recording a win was Mill Park, who defeated
Epping comprehensively by 78 points, bouncing back
after its one-goal loss to Whittlesea the previous week.
Epping continued on its unstoppable run in the
Under-14 Blue competition, defeating Northcote by 31
points and steering three games clear atop the ladder.
Greensborough also defeated Wallan to record its third
win of the year by 26 points.

Second-placed South Morang Blue defeated bottom
side Eltham – who is yet to win a game this season – by
a big margin and showed why it is one of the teams to
beat this year.
The Under-14 Red competition produced some
thrillers, with ladder-leader Research going down to
fifth-placed West Preston by one point in a gripping
contest. Keon Park defeated Yarrambat by one goal in
another nail-bitingcontest, with now only one game
separating the top five.
Second-placed Mill Park defeated Montmorency by 62
points to join Research atop the ladder. Bundoora Park
continued its recent winning streak to two by defeating
Whittlesea comprehensively, ending the Eagles’ recent
patch of good form. Diamond Creek soundly defeated
Epping, who is still yet to win a game in season 2013.
In the Under-13 Blue competition, ladder-leader South
Morang Blue continued its unbeaten streak when it
defeated Northcote by 61 points. Around the grounds,
second-placed Eltham thrashed bottom-placed West
Preston Blue by 95 points. Third-placed Whittlesea
defeated Wallan by 39 points, whilst Laurimar defeated
Mill Park by 37 points.
It was a similar story in the Under-12 Blue
competition, with top side South Morang Blue
continuing its unbeaten start to the year, defeating
Diamond Creek. Whittlesea defeated Northcote by
34 points whilst second-placed Epping defeated
Montmorency Black by 31 points, proving again that
they are a genuine premiership contender.
In the Under-11 Blue competition, third-placed
South Morang Blue upset Eltham by 15 points, ending
the Panthers recent winning streak. Second-placed
Research defeated Bundoora Park by 35 points whilst
Diamond Creek defeated Mill Park by 16 points.
The youngest of the lot in the Under-10 Blue
competition produced some brilliant games, with
South Morang Gold maintaining its unbeaten start
to the year, defeating Eltham by 12 points and
remaining atop the ladder. South Morang Blue was
too good for West Preston to the tune of 33 points,
whilst third-placed Montmorency Black recorded a
victory by one of the slightest margins, defeating
second-placed Greensborough by two points in a
show-stopping match.
