Message From the
President
Greetings Fellow Badger Members!
BGRC General
Membership Meeting
The holidays are fast approaching
and Badger is once again offering
pictures with Santa at our November
General Membership Meeting along
with a “chili dump” dinner. Come
and join us for fun and good food!
Check this Newsletter for more
information.
Sunday, November 18
5:00 pm
It looks like all of the loose ends
have been tied up as regards the
Hunt Test and WC/WCX. We are
actively seeking a date later in the
year to ease the burden of conflicts
with obedience trials and
conformation shows. Hopefully we’ll
have weather that isn’t quite so
taxing on dogs, exhibitors and
workers. Thanks again to all who
made the weekend a success.

Our Specialty Show weekend is
approaching faster than you think!
There is a lot of work to be done and
Edell will be looking for help from the
membership. It takes much effort and
planning to put on a Specialty Show
(and we do two back-to-back!) and
everyone can play a part (and earn
their work hours!). Call Edell before
she has to call you!

President
Continued from page 1
(our local Golden Rescue
organization) was invited to speak at
our board meeting. Your Board of
Directors would like to have a closer
relationship to GRRoW that will
benefit both of our organizations. We
discussed various ways that we can
work together over the course of the
year. Last weekend, Sue Scherber
and Lisa Conigliaro set up a BGRC
booth at GRRoW’s ”Walk in the
Park” (a fundraiser for GRRoW) and
Sue and Lisa’s hunting
demonstration was a rousing
success. Thanks, ladies, for
representing BGRC in style!
Most of you are aware that GRRoW
staffs our raffle table at our
Specialties in exchange for a
percentage of the total dollars raised.
We are very appreciative of this
service as it frees our club members
to help in other areas. I was recently
Badger Golden Retriever Club Newsletter
made aware that a BGRC member
made a rude statement to GRRoW
personnel regarding not wanting any
of the money they were spending at
the raffle to go to GRRoW. I can’t
even tell you how awful it made me
feel to know that a BGRC member
would conduct themselves in such a
manner. Our Specialties should be
friendly and BGRC members should
be behaving in a manner that speaks
well of our club. Frankly, if you don’t
want raffle money to go to GRRoW,
keep you money in your pocket and
your mouth zipped.
Badger members had a booth at the
Highland Games for the first time this
year and plan to participate in the
future. Edell Schaefer, John Stoller,
Bill McEachern, Deb Klemp, Sandy
Stoller, Chris Getter and I (hope I
didn’t forget anyone!) staffed
BGRC’s booth. You can’t imagine
how many people had no idea that
the Golden Retriever originated in
Scotland! The dogs got a lot of
attention and we were able to share
information on our breed with the
public. We look forward to the
Highland Games in the future.
The nominating committee is hard at
work gathering willing participants to
serve on your 2008 Board of
Directors. As you know by now, I’ve
been elected to the GRCA Board of
Directors and am serving as a
Central Regional Director. I will not
be running for another term as
President of BGRC. The time
demands of GRCA are such that I
don’t think I could give my best to
both organizations if I were to run
another term. Please listen carefully
and consider what the nominating
committee has to say when they call
you. A club doesn’t run itself. We
need our members to actively
participate in running the club. The
presidency isn’t a scary position,
though it does require that you be
able to look beyond your personal
opinions to see what is right and
good for the club. Our next
President is out there…is it you?

BGRC General
Membership Meeting
Minutes
September 30, 2007
The meeting was held at Animal
Motel in Butler, Wisconsin, and
called to order by President Sandi
Haessler at 5:17 pm.
Minutes of the last meeting: Minutes
of the July 21, 2007, meeting were
approved as published in the
June/July newsletter.
President’s Report: Sandi Haessler
welcomed guests and commented
on the club’s successful Labor Day
weekend public education event at
the Wisconsin Highland Games.
Secretary’s Report: Nothing to
report.
Treasurer’s Report: Joan Kaml
reported the club’s current checking
balance.
Committee Reports:
Specialty: Nothing to report.
Membership: Mike and Sharon Long
were unanimously approved as
voting members.
Breeder Referral: Pat Smith reported
that there had only been 6 calls since
her last report.
Field: John Stoller asked members
who worked at the hunt test to
complete their worksheets and send
them to him to document their work.
Since John could not attend the hunt
test, he will verify worksheets with
other members of the committee. Bill
will add a worksheet PDF document
to the web site so worksheets are
available to members as needed.
Sandi reiterated that it is the
responsibility of individual members
to report their activities and have
their worksheet signed by the event
chair.

pet kits as a fundraiser. Susan
Scherber asked if the club could
purchase kits for resale rather
than making its own.
Old Business:
1. Sandi Haessler commented on
the good attendance at the
BGRC exhibit at the Wisconsin
Highland Games event and
noted that many people were
unfamiliar with the history of
Golden Retrievers. Next year the
Games’ organizer hopes to have
demonstrations by the various
breeds. Sandi suggested we do
field and obedience
demonstrations with our dogs.
New Business:
1. Jean Granger asked that the
club consider sponsoring a
judges seminar as an event. She
and Susan Scherber volunteered
to organize this event which
could be held at the Bong
Molinaro Visitor Center.
2. Pat Smith announced that
GRRoW is sponsoring a dog
walk on Saturday, October 20,
from 10 am to 3 pm at Lapham
State Park. Details are available
on GRRoW’s web site. This is a
fundraiser and will include a dog
demonstration by BGRC. Sandi
Haessler asked for volunteers to
staff this event and noted that,
lacking volunteers, we would
have to cancel our participation.
Susan Scherber volunteered to
work on this but needs
assistance. Sandi noted that
Edell Schaefer has brochures
and materials from the Highland
Games event that could be used
for this event. Someone should
contact Edell to get the
materials. The board is meeting
with Deb Lukasik on October 17
to discuss how BGRC and
GRRoW might work together in
the future.
3. Pat Smith reported that the club
is putting together emergency
4. A nominating committee needs
to be formed to nominate officers
and board members for 2008.
Jean Taylor volunteered to
represent the board on the
committee. Members interested
in serving on the nominating
committee should contact Jean.
5. Jean Taylor reported on
upcoming Wisconsin legislation
that could have a significant
impact on breeders. She
distributed copies of the
legislation. While the legislation
targets commercial breeders, it
also has provisions affecting all
breeders. Bill will add a link on
the BGRC web page for anyone
else who would like to review the
document. Jean encouraged
members to write their legislators
since this bill affects pet owners
as well as breeders.
6. Joan Kaml announced a drawing
for leftover trophies and asked
members to submit their names
for the drawing following the
meeting.
7. Members approved the purchase
of a $50 gift card for Dr. Marty
Greer.
8. Members shared recent brags.
These also appear on the web
page and will be published in the
next newsletter.
Next Meeting Date: The next general
membership meeting is Sunday,
November 18, at HAWS.
Adjournment: There being no further
business the meeting adjourned at
5:55 pm. a program on vaccinations
by Dr. Marty Greer followed the
meeting.

Annual Tails on Trails Dog Walk and
Day in the Park at Lapham Peak
Park on Saturday, October 20, with a
hunt test demonstration.
GRRoW raised approximately
$10,000 PLUS was able to get an
additional $5,000 in matching funds
from a donor since they met their
fundraising goal. Deb Lukasik,
president of GRRoW, says “I want to
thank everyone who was at the
Badger booth. I heard many
comments that people thought they
were extremely polite and
professional. They also purchased
some additional raffle tickets to get
us to our $10,000 goal when we
were about $78 short of that amount.
We look forward to working with
Badger in the near future.”

Submitted by Sandy Stoller
Membership Chair
The following new members will be
voted on at the November 18 general
membership meeting. Please
welcome them all to BGRC.
Sue Scherber adds “It was a really
amazing day. The weather was
perfect, you couldn't have asked for
a better day. Lisa (Conigliaro) and I
really enjoyed doing the Hunt Test
demonstration and we will offer to do
it again next year. Karen
(Szymanski) also was there
representing BGRC, as was my
husband, Steven, and my three
nieces, McKayla, Rachel and
Chloe. The kids really loved all the
demos that were given and Chloe
was really interested in tasting the
dog treats baked by Petlicious... she
was sure they looked good enough
for humans.

part of an organization that loves
Goldens as much as she does. She
is interested in reading, baseball,
exercise, camping and attending her
son's sporting events.
Stephanie has attended the March,
May and September meetings. She
also walked in the Elm Grove parade

How do we get our Goldens?
Owner surrenders, abandoned dogs,
shelters and humane societies and
backyard breeders.
Why do people surrender a dog?
You name it, we’ve heard it.
Allergies, shedding, too much
energy, the smell, too old, don’t want
to pay for vet bills, significant other
doesn’t like the dog, we got a puppy
and the old dog growls at it (so they
surrender the old dog), divorce,
death in family, travel, children don’t
take care of the dog, life style
changes, “I thought Goldens were
mellow and came trained”, etc. The
list could go on forever.
Do you just take in a dog when
you get a call?
No. All of our dogs have to pass a
strict temperament test or
assessment. Our assessors have
training in dog behavior and we are
always further educating our
volunteers. Dogs that have any bite
history cannot come into rescue or
any dog with severe aggression or
guarding issues. Prior to
assessment, our intake team
thoroughly interviews the family to
get the full behavior and medical
history of the dog. If the dog passes
the assessment, the dog goes into
home foster care. We have transport
volunteers who help get the dog from
the surrendering location to the
foster home.
What does it take to be a foster
home?
You must be a volunteer of GRRoW
with a signed Hold Harmless on file
(insurance requirements) and pass a
background check. All foster homes
are trained in our policies and
Badger Golden Retriever Club Newsletter
procedures. When a dog is posted
on our yahoogroups, the foster home
expresses and interest in fostering
the dog that is posted. All dogs are
in-home fostered and must live in
your home as part of the family.
What does a foster home have to
pay for?
GRRoW pays for 100% of all medical
bills for the dog which include a vet
check up, spay/neuter, shots,
medications, heartworm meds &
Frontline. The foster home pays for
dog food (unless it is determined that
the dog needs a prescription diet,
then GRRoW pays) and any nonessentials such as toys, dog beds,
treats, etc. GRRoW does not pay for
grooming. We have a list that the
foster home takes to the vet of their
choice that explains all items that
GRRoW will pay for.
How long does the dog stay in a
foster home?
Minimum 14-21 days and until
medically and behaviorally cleared.
We do have families that also
hospice our terminally ill dogs until it
is time to cross the bridge.
So I have a foster and it’s ready to
go, now what?
You do not have to search for a
home for your foster dog. We have a
placement team that takes care of
that for you. They have the
information on all our applicants and
match the applicant to the dogs in
foster care and supply you with
applications to look at.
We fell in love with our foster dog
and want to keep it. Can we?
That’s fine. Foster homes have first
chance to adopt their foster dog. The
majority of the foster homes lovingly
call themselves “foster or placement
failures”. This means we fell in love
with our foster dog and adopted it.
Fosters do have to pay the same
adoption fee as other applicants.

What is a Puppy Mill?
[This article by Charlotte McGowan,
the legislative liaison for the
American Shetland Sheepdog
Association, was posted on WI
Animal Laws with permission to
crosspost.]
I cringe now when I hear the phrase
"puppy mill." What I have to say may
Badger Golden Retriever Club Newsletter
not win any popularity contests for
me but it needs to be said.
1. What is a puppy mill? You have
your definition I am sure. But
there is no LEGAL definition of a
puppy mill. Because we in the
fancy have freely thrown this
phrase around, we have actually
aided the animal rights activists.
As far as the animal rights
activists are concerned, a puppy
mill is anyone who purposefully
breeds ANY dogs, even a single
litter! I will bet you do not agree
with this definition. But take a
look at Calif. AB 1634 and see
what's going on. In terms of AB
1634, you breed a litter, you're a
PROBLEM! That's the way that
bill is framed.
2. If there is no legal definition of a
puppy mill, should we be in favor
of preventing all breeding of
dogs based on our own personal
definition of a "puppy mill”? I
think not. People want pets. You
and I don’t breed enough to
supply them. Think about that!
3. Can we agree there is a
definition of a puppy mill? I think
not. Ask 10 fanciers
independently and you will get
10 different answers. So what
does the public think? How does
the public (not dog breeders)
define a puppy mill? Here is
where the AR's have used us.
They talk about "overpopulation"
and the need to stop ALL
breeding. We talk about "puppy
mills" and stopping puppy mills.
So the public is now confused
since there is no legal definition
of a puppy mill. The public is
beginning to view breeders, all
breeders, as puppy mills. We
have contributed to public
perception. We don't breed
enough to supply the public's
desire for pets but we oppose
breeding by others who see a
need and plan to fill it for profit.
Page 8
4. We need to stop buying into the
"overpopulation" rhetoric. People
want pets and people will have
pets. It is a matter of who will
supply those pets. We need to
focus the public on the value of
purebreds over the various
doodles and poos and mutts
imported from Mexico, Puerto
Rico and everywhere else. As
long as we talk about "puppy
mills" we are missing the boat.
Talk about substandard kennels
if you like. Talk about conditions.
No one approves of dogs badly
kept. Talk about diseases
brought in by mutts from tropical
climates. But don't talk about
puppy mills.
5. Petland and Hunte exist for a
reason: People want pets. They
are commercial entities. We
hobbyists don't like the idea of
commercial entities. That's been
clear for ever so long. Does that
mean that all commercial sellers
are "puppy mills”? Well, there is
no legal definition, please
remember. Petland and Hunte
probably do a much better job of
selling commercially bred dogs
than the mass breeders of
doodles and poos. and the
chances of a Petland dog being
healthy are way ahead of what
the chances are for the mutt
imported from Mexico or Puerto
Rico. But the animal rights
activists have been extremely
successful in convincing you, the
hobbyist, that all commercially
bred dogs are bred in filth and
squalor. In fact, that's not true.
The terible kennels of the 80's
have in large part been weeded
out by AKC's Inspections and
Investigations department and
5000 inspections a year along
with the USDA inspections.
There are still some bad kennels,
but guess what, there are bad
hobby breeder kennels! Does
that mean because you may
personally know of a kennel
where the dogs are not kept well,
that all hobbyists are bad? Of

course not. We just don't like the
idea of commercially bred pets.
But definitions count!
6. Historical fact: Some of our
founding breeders of our own
Shelties, people we all respect,
made a lot of their living selling
dogs, including pets. People like
Dot Foster (Timberidge) chief
author of the current standard,
Betty Whelen, excellent and
beloved breeder, etc. There was
a time it was ok to breed lots of
dogs and sell the non-showdogs
for pets, and do it proudly. What
happened? We all convinced
ourselves we shouldn't breed too
many dogs. We left the door
open for commercial breeders
and sellers.
7. The animal rights people have
changed the landscape. If you
help protest "puppy mills" please
remember there is no legal
definition. Some of the
commercial breeders have stateof-the-art kennels. I know you
don't want to hear that, but it is
true. Does a commercial kennel
that is state-of-the-art qualify as
a "puppy mill”? Does your fellow
breeder who breeds two extra
litters of puppies a year qualify
as a puppy mill? Does your
single litter qualify you as a
puppy mill? Depends on whose
definition you use. And
remember, that as we fight bad
legislation, we are ALL Puppy
Mills according to the animal
rights activists! Let's concentrate
on the real enemy: the animal
rights activists who want no
purposefully bred dogs at all.
Sites to Devour

[Reprinted from the 2007 November/
December Golden Retriever News]
Given the recent recalls on foods for
both human and animal
consumption, it’s not surprising that
what to feed our pets is often a topic
on the front burner. Generally not
much time elapses on discussion
Badger Golden Retriever Club Newsletter
lists before someone asks what they
should feed their puppies, or their
senior dog, or a dog with health
issues (most notably allergies,
various cancers, or arthritis or hip
dysplasia). For every question there
seem to be dozens of answers, all
favored by the individuals that tout
them as the absolute best food on
the market. There are also
alternatives to commercially
prepared diets which the “BARF” and
raw/whole food advocates swear by.
Whichever you end up selecting,
getting to that decision can be
confusing and downright difficult to
make. You’ll have to learn the
basics of canine nutrition, how to
read labels, and sort through dozens
of options. The following websites
should help you get started.
A good starting point is The Dog
Food Project
(www.dogfoodproject.com) which is
the creation of a native German,
Sabine Contreras, who completed an
apprenticeship in nutrition and
dietetics in her native country,
studied animal nutrition, earned a
certificate in animal care from
Guelph University, and who has
continued to research the pet food
industry and manufacturing for the
past 8 years in this country. Her
credentials for the content of her
website are sound, and worth looking
at.
Contreras’ website is well-organized,
clear and concise. In addition to her
own material, she provides valuable
links to back up her articles that take
the reader to trustworthy sites such
as the U.S. Food and Drug
Administration, Center for Veterinary
Medicine and to the Association of
American Feed Control Officials.
The AAFCA’s stated purpose is “…to
provide a mechanism for developing
and implementing uniform and
equitable laws, regulations,
standards and enforcement policies
for regulating the manufacture,
distribution and sale of animal feeds;
resulting in safe, effective, and useful
feeds.”
Page 9
The section on commercial dry foods
includes an introduction, label
reading lesson, guidelines for
identifying good products (steps to
follow, what to look for, what to
avoid), specific ingredients to avoid
(categorized by type – additives,
binders, carbohydrate sources, color
agents, fat and fiber sources,
flavoring agents, protein sources,
etc.) Currently under construction is
a product-specific table which will list
the current contents of individual
brands of food.
A separate section is devoted to
organic, grain free and
vegetarian/vegan foods.
Several articles will help give you a
firm foundation in dog nutrition
including, “Is too much protein
harmful?”, “Myths about feeding,”
“The Yuck factor”, “Where the money
goes,” “Natural supplementation,”
Menadione (Vitamin K3),” and
“Nutrient requirements.”
The final section is a nutrition primer
with an overview of components
such as water, protein, fat,
carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals,
essential fatty acids, and probiotics.
The second site that is valuable is BNaturals (www.bnaturals.com/newsindex.php)
developed by Lew Olson, Ph.D.
(Blackwood Kennels Rottweilers).
Ms. Olson’s site offers an archive of
articles that deal with specific
conditions. Here you will find “Diets
for dogs with cancer,” “Allergies and
essential fatty acids,” “Joint problems
and nutrition,” “Nutrition and
pregnancy,” and “Weaning and
raising puppies on a raw diet.” You
can sign up for Lew Olson’s
newsletter which will be emailed to
you. Local club newsletter editors
will like the fact that they have
permission to reprint these articles
provided it is done in their entirety,
not distributed for profit, and credit is
given to the author. In addition to
her articles, this website is great for

providing natural diet recipes, and
access to the products and
supplements the she has developed.
Lew has been doing this since 1979
and has exceptional experience and
credentials, making her site both
valuable and credible. She also
manages a yahoogroup (K9Nutrition)
that is very popular. The archives
are public, but you can subscribe by

group has been in existence since
1999.
The third site that I’ve found helpful
is by The Great Dane Lady – Linda
Arndt. (www.thegreatdanelady.com)
Linda initially created this website to
benefit her puppy buyers. She
disclaims at the beginning that she is
not a veterinarian or trained
nutritionist, and that the information
she provides is a result of her 35+
years of dog ownership and personal
Page 10
research. That being said, this site
provides dozens of feeding regimens
and health related articles. A
sampling of articles includes: “Repair
– rescue and performance dogs,”
“Healthy pet treats,” “Giardia – IBD
or IBS syndrome,” “Weight loss,”
“Cancer – Nutritional support,” and
“Water – When and how much.”
If these websites help you to find a
food that is suitable for your dog, this
article will have served its purpose.
GOLDEN MEMORIES
A Farewell to Albert
In the summer of 1993 our daughter Terri was going through chemo therapy. She had been battling a recurrence
of melanoma since January and was losing the battle. She told me if only she had a puppy she would be better.
About that time my sister had an unexpected litter of Golden Retrievers. When Terri heard that she asked if she
could have one. It is hard to say no to someone who is dying. She picked him out of the litter at three weeks and
named him Albert. Three weeks later my sister brought him to the house. Unfortunately it was the day Terri died.
My husband didn’t want to keep him but how could we not? Terri had picked him.
I realized years later that Albert was actually Terri’s gift to me. When she died my life stopped. I had given up my
business to care for Terri and now she was gone. But here was this little Golden Retriever puppy that needed to be
taken care of.
He was eager to please and learned quickly, but at six months of age I learned he was severely displastic. A few
weeks later he had triple pelvic ostomotomy on one hip and four weeks later on the other. He healed slowly and
had to be crated for the next eight months. He could only come out on leash to potty then back into the crate. At
fifteen months of age he was afraid of everything. But gradually he recovered and we started obedience training.
Albert was my first Utility Dog and my only UDX. I showed him until just before his ninth birthday and he was
always an excellent jumper. The surgery was a success.
The last year has been hard for him but I made accommodations. On Friday, September 14, I knew his time had
come and I regretfully said goodbye. He will always be my special dog.

Breeder Referral Program
2008
The time has come to update the BGRC’s Breeder Referral Directory. This letter will serve as an
introduction to the program and an update on the requirements for participation as established by the
BGRC Board of Directors.
Breeder Referral is primarily a public education service that helps people make educated
decisions about buying a Golden Retriever puppy. It is much more than just helping breeders sell
puppies! The program is designed to educate the public and discourage people from purchasing
dogs from non-reputable sources. It helps people make educated choices about getting a Golden
Retriever and makes sure they have the information they need to successfully raise a dog. Hopefully
this program makes strides in preventing impulsive and unwise puppy purchases which result in the
kinds of situations that require rescue. We sincerely believe that a sound referral program can pave
the way to improving the future of the breed.

GRCA CODE OF ETHICS
Following you will find the Code of Ethics adopted by the Board of Directors on April 20, 1997. This text was adopted after many revisions, long
discussions, review of other national breed clubs’ Codes and consideration of input from the membership. The Code’s nature is not punitive, but rather a
guideline that is informational and states the accepted norm in Golden Retrievers. This Code will appear in the GRCA booklet Acquiring a Golden
Retriever and in new member packets. New members, by their application, agree to abide by and follow the guidelines outlined in the Code of Ethics.
The reaffirmation statement on the annual dues renewal also will note members’ agreement to follow the guidelines of this Code.
The Golden Retriever Club of America endorses the following Code of
Ethics for its members. It is the purpose of GRCA to encourage its
members to perfect through selection, breeding and training the type of
dog most suitable in all respects for work as a companionable gun dog,
and to do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of
Golden Retrievers in every endeavor.
RESPONSIBILITIES AS A DOG OWNER:
Members must ensure that their dogs are kept safe and under
control at all times. Members should properly train their dogs so that
they are an asset to their community and not a nuisance. Dogs must
be maintained with their safety and good health in mind at all times,
including adequate and appropriate attention and socialization,
grooming, feeding, veterinary attention, housing, routine care, exercise
and training.
RESPONSIBILITIES AS A MEMBER OF GRCA:
Members’ responsibilities include educating the public about the
breed, keeping in mind that they and their dogs represent the breed,
the GRCA and the sport of purebred dogs in general.
Members are urged to accept the written breed standard as
approved by the American Kennel Club (or the other applicable
governing body of the country in which they reside or exhibit) as the
standard description of physical and temperamental qualities by which
the Golden Retriever is to be judged.
Members are required to maintain good sportsmanship at all events
and competitions, abiding by the applicable rules and regulations set
forth by the governing bodies for such events and competitions.
Members’ conduct should always be in accord with the purposes and
intent of the GRCA Constitution and By-Laws.
RESPONSIBILITIES AS A BREEDER:
GRCA members who breed Golden Retrievers are encouraged to
maintain the purpose of the breed and are expected to demonstrate
honesty and fairness in dealing with other owners and breeders,
purchasers of dogs and the general public. Owners of breeding
animals shall provide appropriate documentation to all concerned
regarding the health of dogs involved in a breeding or sale, including
reports of examinations such as those applying to hips and eyes. If any
such examinations have not been performed on a dog, this should be
stated.
Breeders should understand and acknowledge that they may need
to take back, or assist in finding a new home for, any dog they produce
at any time in its life, if requested to do so.
Members who breed should sell puppies, permit stud service, and/or
lease any stud dogs or brood bitches only to individuals who give
satisfactory evidence that they will give proper care and attention to the
animals concerned, and who may be expected generally to act within
the intent of the statements of this Code of Ethics. Members are
encouraged to use clear, concise written contracts to document the
sale of animals, use of stud dogs, and lease arrangements, including
the use, when appropriate, of non-breeding agreements and/or Limited
Registration. Members should not sell dogs at auction, or to brokers or
commercial dealers.
ADVISORY GUIDELINES:
Breeding stock should be selected with the objectives of GRCA in
mind; that is:
Recognizing that the Golden Retriever breed was
developed as a useful gun dog, to encourage the
perfection by careful and selective breeding of
Golden Retrievers that possess the appearance,
structure, soundness, temperament, natural ability
and personality that are characterized in the
standard of the breed, and to do all possible to
advance and promote the perfection of these
qualities. (Paraphrased from Article I, Section 2, of
the GRCA By-Laws, as amended in 1995.)
GRCA members are expected to follow AKC requirements for record keeping, identification of animals, and registration procedures. Animals selected for
breeding should:
i.
be of temperament typical of the Golden Retriever breed; stable, friendly, trainable, and willing to work. Temperament is of utmost importance
to the breed and must never be neglected;
ii.
be in good health, including freedom from communicable disease;
iii.
possess the following examination reports in order to verify status concerning possible hip dysplasia, hereditary eye or cardiovascular disease,
and elbow dysplasia:
a. Hips — appropriate report from Orthopedic Foundation for Animals; PennHip; Ontario Veterinary College; BVA/KC Hip Score (Great Britain)
or at least a written report from a board-certified veterinary radiologist (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists).
b. Eyes — appropriate report from a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmology (ACVO) or from a BVA/Kcapproved
ophthalmologist (Great Britain).
c. Hearts — appropriate report from a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Medicine, Cardiology Specialty.
d. Elbows — appropriate report from Orthopedic Foundation for Animals; Institute for Genetic Disease Control in Animals; or at minimum a
written report from a board-certified veterinary radiologist (Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Radiologists).
Consideration should be given also to other disorders that may have a genetic component, including, but not limited to, epilepsy, hypothyroidism, skin
disorders (allergies), and orthopedic disorders such as osteochondritis.
iv. Assuming all health and examination reports are favorable, the age of the breeding pair also is of consideration. Generally, a Golden Retriever is
not physically and mentally mature until the age of 2 years; an individual dog’s suitability as a breeding animal is difficult to assess until that time.
Adopted: April 20, 1997, by GRCA Board of Directors.
