WARRANTY AND LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
Limited Warrudy
Akerman warrants to the first user that its products shall be free from defects in
material and workmanship for six (6) months from date of delivery or 1000 hours of
use, whichever first occurs.
Should failure.to conform with this warranty appear during the warranty period
as mentioned above under normal and proper use and provided the products have
been properly installed, stored and maintained, Akerman shall, if given prompt
notice by Buyer, correct such nonconformity, at Akerman's option, by: (1) repair at
jobsite, if possible; or, (ii) repair or replacement of the nonconforming products or
parts thereof F.O.B. factory or authorized distributor; or, (iii) refund of the purchase •
price of the nonconforming product after return of such product to Akerman. Return
of products or parts to Akerman shall be at Buyer's risk and expense. In no event
shall Akerman be responsible for providing working access to the defect, including
• disassembly and reassembly of associated equipment.
Parts repaired or replaced, or the product if replaced as a unit, are warranted
for 30 days or for the period of time remaining under the original warranty,
whichever is longer.

OTHER WARRANTIES OF QUALITY,WRITTEN,ORAL OR IMPLIED; AND
ALL OTHER WARRANTIES, INCLUDING ANY IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF
MERCHANTABILITY AND FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, ARE
HEREBY DISCLAIMED. Correction of nonconformities in the manner and for the
period of time provided above shall be Buyer's exclusive remedy and shall constitute
fulfillment of all liabilities of Akerman (including any liability for direct, indirect,
special, incidental and consequential damages) whether in warranty, contract,
negligence, tort, strict liability or otherwise with respect to nonconformance or
defects in the products delivered hereunder.
Akerman neither assumes nor authorizes any person to assume for it any
obligation other than as herein provided in connection with its products.
The foregoing warranties shall not apply to any used product or parts or any
products or parts which a) have been improperly repaired or altered, b) have been
subjected to misuse. negligence or accident, or c) have been used in a manner
contrary to Akerman's instructions.

ABOUT THIS MANUAL
This manual incorporates a new simplified page numbering system. The book is divided into
major categories or sections, each of which is separated by an index tab sheet. Pages are
numbered consecutively within each section. For example, let's say the section entitled
"Pumps and Motors" contains the following pages:

Should we add a pump to the machine at a future date, it would simply become "page 5."
If we change one of the existing pages, the new page would have the same number. For - example,
if we change the vendor on the swing motor, a new page would be prepared. This new page would
also be "page 3". In other words, each Master Parts Manual would then contain two page 3's.
The effective date and serial number block will be your key to determine which page to use for
a particular machine.
Each page includes the name of the major category it is a part of. This is found below the title
of the page itself, and will enable you to file newly released pages in their proper location in
your Master Parts Manual.
As in the past, customer manuals will be individually assembled, and contain only those pages which
apply to his particular machine.

OPERATION
The information in this manual is designed to
furnish the owner and operator of the Hein-Werner
C-12HD Backhoe with the basic information needed to
understand the operation of the machine.
For safe and efficient operation, first become
familiar with the location and purpose of all controls
and instruments. Study the following pages carefully,
regardless of your previous experience.

ENGINE AND INSTRUMENTS
When operating the machine, periodic attention should be given to the
instrument panel gauges and warning lights. This will prevent any minor
malfunction from becoming a major breakdown.
GAUGES
NOTE:
The tachometer located at the rear of the engine is an integral part
of the Detroit Diesel. The engine governed speed has been preset at
2650 R.P.M. (Clutch disengaged) at full throttle. The engine R.P.M. should
never exceed 2650 R.P.M. at full throttle.
5. Water Temperature Gauge: Under normal engine operating
conditions the water temperature should be 160 ° to 185 ° F.
6. Oil Pressure Gauge: The oil pressure gauge should indicate
40 to 60 P.S.I. at full throttle. Should the pressure fall
below this range (other than at idle) immediately shut off
the engine and investigate the cause.
7. Ammeter Gauge: The ammeter indicates either battery charge or
discharge depending on the condition of the battery.
WARNING LIGHTS
8. Hydraulic Temperature Warning Light: A red light located on
the instrument panel will appear should the hydraulic oil
overheat. If this happens, immediately stop the engine and
investigate as to the cause.
9. Toggle Switch: To test the hydraulic temperature warning light
(red light) use the toggle switch.

Operators not familiar with hydraulic machines may tend to over-control
and thereby cause rough operation of the machine. It is, therefore, recommended
that the machine be operated at half throttle or less until the operator becomes
thoroughly oriented with the controls.
1. Boom Control Lever
A. To raise the boom, pull back on the boom control lever.
If greater lift speed is desired, push the boom speed
boost control button while pulling back on the boom
control lever.
B. When the boom control lever is returned to the neutral
position (center) the boom will remain positioned.
C. To lower the boom, push the boom control lever forward.
2. Swing Control Lever
A. To swing the platform in a clockwise direction, pull the
swing control lever back.
B. To swing the platform in a counter-clockwise direction,
push the swing control lever forward.
C. To stop swing rotation in either direction, feather the
swing control lever into the opposite direction until
rotation stops.
CAUTION: WHENEVER THE MACHINE IS NOT BEING OPERATED, ALWAYS
ENGAGE SWING BRAKE AND LOWER BUCKET TO THE GROUND.
3. Dipstick Control Pedal
A. To tuck the dipstick, push down with the heel of the right
foot on the dipstick control pedal. If greater digging
speed is desired, push the dipstick speed boost control
button while heeling the dipstick control pedal.
B. When the dipstick control pedal is returned to the neutral
position (center) the dipstick will remain positioned.
C. To extend the dipstick, push down with toe of the right
foot on the dipstick control pedal.

4. Bucket Control Pedal
A. To curl bucket, push down with the heel of the left foot
on the bucket control pedal.
B. When the bucket control pedal is returned to the neutral
position (center) the bucket will remain positioned.
C. To dump bucket, push down with toe of the left foot on
the bucket control pedal.

PROPEL CONTROL LEVERS
The crawler undercarriage is in the accepted digging and traveling position
when the drive sprockets are to the rear. Follow the operating instructions below
when the crawler is in this position. When the crawler is in a reversed position
(drive sprockets at the front) reverse the directional instructions.
1. To propel machine forward, push both levers forward.
2. To propel machine backward, pull both levers backward.
3. To make a right hand turn, use any of the following procedures:
A. Push the left lever forward and leave the right lever in neutral.
B. Pull the left lever forward and leave the left lever in neutral.
C. When working in close quarters, or when speed is required, a right
hand "spin" turn may be made by simultaneously pushing the left hand
lever forward and the right hand lever backward.
4. To make a left hand turn, reverse the above directions.
NOTE:
CAUTION:

The control valves in the propel hydraulic circuit are detented to hold
the spools in either of the two positions. The spool will not return to
the neutral position unless the control lever is manually returned to the
neutral position.
WHENEVER MACHINE IS NOT BEING OPERATED ALWAYS ENGAGE PROPEL BRAKE
AND LOWER BUCKET TO THE GROUND.

PREPARING TO START ENGINE
CAUTION: BEFORE STARTING THE ENGINE, BE SURE THE AREA IS ADEQUATELY
VENTILATED.
Prior to starting the engine, the following daily checks
and servicing must be performed.
DAILY CHECK LIST
1. Check The Engine Crank Case Oil Level.
2. Check The Hydraulic Reservoir Oil Level.
3. Check The Radiator Coolant Level.
4. Check The Battery Electrolyte Level.
5. Check All Control Valves For The Neutral Position
6. Perform Daily Lubrication
STARTING THE ENGINE
Before starting the engine for the first time, refer to the engine
manufacturers operating manual.
NOTE: The engine may require the use of a cold weather starting aid
in areas with low ambient temperatures.
1. Make sure the manual shut-down control is in the open position.
2. Set the throttle control in the idle position. Engage starting motor.
If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, disengage starter and
allow the starting motor to cool a few minutes before trying again.
3. Check the oil pressure gauge immediately after starting the engine. If
there is no oil pressure indicated within 10-20 seconds, stop the engine
and check the lubricating system. The minimum oil pressure should be at
least 18 P.S.I. at 1200 R.P.M. The oil pressure at normal operating speed
should be 40-60 P.S.I.
4. Run engine at quarter throttle and no load for approximately five minutes
allowing it to warm up, before applying a load.

STOPPING THE ENGINE
1. Release the load and decrease the engine speed.
2. Allow the engine to run at half speed or lower with no load for five minutes
before closing the throttle and stopping the engine.
NOTE: The emergency shut-down control should never be used to stop the
engine except in an emergency.

MAINTENANCE
CHECKING AND SETTING
HYDRAULIC PRESSURES
The control valves, inline reliefs, and crossover relief
valves were correctly adjusted before the backhoe was shipped.
Only the factory and dealer representatives are authorized to
adjust the relief valve settings. TAMPERING WITH THE RELIEF
VALVE SETTINGS WILL RESULT IN VOIDING THE WARRANTY OF THE MACHINE.
However, in the event of any malfunction regarding the hydraulic
pressure, check and/or reset the relief pressures as follows:
NOTE
The following is a list of tools necessary to properly check or
reset the relief valve pressures:
1. 0-3000 P.S.I. gauge
2. 11/16 open end wrench
3. 3/16 inch allen wrench
4. 5/8 inch open end wrench
5. 9/16 inch open end wrench
6. Straight shank screwdriver
All hydraulic pressures are to be set with the engine running
at full throttle.

1. Install gauge in rod end of boom cylinder or in boom control
valve test adapter.
2. Remove acorn nut to expose the main relief adjusting screw.
Loosen adjusting screw jam nut, turning jam nut counterclockwise on adjusting screw until jam nut has backed off
about one quarter of an inch.
3
Run the boom cylinder rods in until they dead head. To
achieve a dead head on the rod side of the boom cylinders
either lower the boom into an excavation or disconnect the
ends of the boom cylinder from the boom. While dead heading
the boom in this position, turn the main relief adjusting screw
clockwise until the boom inline relief begins to bypass. This
should occur at 2350 to 2400 P.S.I. Continue turning the adadjusting screw clockwise two full turns, no increase in gauge
reading (P.S.I.) should appear. If gauge reading increases, the
inline relief must be reset.
4. If the inline relief has failed to relieve at the correct pressure
(2350 to 2400 P.S.I.) then it must be readjusted. To adjust the
inline relief, remove the valve end cap and either turn the inline
relief adjusting screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease pressure.

After the inline relief has been set, continue to dead head the
boom cylinders in the same direction as before. While dead heading the cylinder, turn the main relief adjusting screw counterclockwise until the gauge reading is 2150 P.S.I.
6. Stop dead heading the boom cylinders. While holding the main
relief adjust screw with a screwdriver, lock the jam nut into
place. Replace acorn nut on adjusting screw.

1. Install gauge in base of dipstick cylinder or in dipstick control
valve test adapter.
Loosen adjusting screw jam nut, turning jam nut counter-clockwise
on adjusting screw until jam nut has backed off about one-quarter
of an inch.
3. Run the dipstick cylinder rod out until it dead heads.
While holding the dipstick control in this position, turn the
main relief adjusting screw clockwise until the dipstick inline
relief begins to bypass. This should occur at 2350 to 2400 P.S.I.
Continue turning the adjusting screw clockwise two full turns, no
increase in gauge reading (P.S.I.) should appear. If gauge reading
increases, the inline relief must be reset.
4.
If the inline relief has failed to relieve at the correct pressure
(2350 to 2400 P.S.I.) then it must be readjusted. To adjust the
inline relief, remove the valve end cap and either turn the inline
relief adjusting screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease pressure.
5. After the inline relief has been set, continue to dead head the dipstick
cylinder in the same direction as before. While dead heading the cylinder
turn the main relief adjusting screw counter-clockwise until the gauge
reading is 2150 P.S.I.

adjusting screw with a screwdriver, lock the jam nut into place. Replace
acorn nut on adjusting screw.

1. Install gauge or gauges in swing crossover relief valve gauge ports.
2. Apply swing brake or block swing in both directions by putting bucket
teeth into the ground and applying down pressure with the boom.
3. Remove acorn nut to expose the main relief adjusting screw. Loosen
adjusting screw jam nut, turning jam nut counter-clockwise on adjusting
screw until jam nut has backed off about one-quarter of an inch.
4. Move swing control lever completely forward. While holding the swing
lever in this position, turn the main relief adjusting screw clockwise
until the respective swing crossover relief valve begins to bypass.
This should occur at 2200 to 2250 P.S.I. Continue turning adjusting
screw clockwise two full turns, no increase in gauge reading (P.S.I.)
should appear. If gauge reading increases, the crossover relief valve
must be reset. The procedure for checking the opposite direction of
swing pressure is identical except for one exception: the swing control
lever must be moved completely backward.
5.
If the swing crossover relief has failed to relieve at the correct pressure
(2200 to 2250 P.S.I.), then it must be readjusted. To adjust the crossover
relief, remove the valve end cap and turn the adjusting screw clockwise to
increase pressure or turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise to decrease
pressure.
6. After the swing crossover reliefs have been set, continue to hold the swing
lever in the last direction which was checked. While doing this, turn the
main relief adjusting screw counter-clockwise until the gauge reading is
2000 P.S.I.
7. Return the swing lever to the neutral position. While holding the main
relief adjusting screw with a screwdriver, lock the jam nut into place.
Replace acorn nut on adjusting screw.

1. Install gauge in the base of boom cylinder.
2. Run the boom cylinder rod out until it dead heads.
3. Making sure the boom control is in the neutral position;
activate the speed boost on the circuit. The P.S.I.
reading for the speed boost solenoid should be 2300
P.S.I.
4. If the speed boost solenoid relief has failed to relieve
at the correct pressure (2300 P.S.I.), then it must be
readjusted. To adjust the speed boost solenoid relief,
remove the valve end cap and turn the solenoid adjusting
screw clockwise to increase pressure or turn the adjusting
screw counter-clockwise to decrease pressure.
5. After the speed boost solenoid relief has been set, discontinue
activating speed boost button. Replace valve end cap.

CHECKING PROPEL
CROSSOVER RELIEF
PRESSURES
1. Install gauge in propel crossover relief valve or in dipstick
control valve test adapter.
2. Deadhead or block propel system in the direction to be tested.
To achieve a deadhead on the propel system, place an obstruction
between the track rollers and track shoes to stop the track
system's operation.
Loosen adjusting screw jam nut, turning jam nut counterclockwise on adjusting screw until jam nut has backed off
about one quarter of an inch.
4. Move the appropriate propel control lever completely forward
or backward. While holding the propel lever in this position,
turn the main relief adjusting screw clockwise until the respective propel crossover relief valve begins to bypass. This
should occur at 2350 to 2400 P.S.I. Continue turning adjusting
screw clockwise two full turns, no increase in gauge reading
(P.S.I.) should appear. Reverse the procedure to check the
opposite direction.
5.
If the propel crossover relief has failed to relieve at the
correct pressure (2350 to 2400 P.S.I.), then it must be readjusted. To adjust the crossover relief, remove the valve
end cap and turn the adjusting screw clockwise to increase
pressure or turn the adjusting screw counter-clockwise to
decrease pressure.
6. After the propel crossover reliefs have been set, continue
to hold the propel lever in the last direction which was
checked. While doing this, turn the main relief adjusting
screw counter-clockwise until the gauge reading is 2150 P.S.T.

Return the propel to the neutral position. While holding the
main relief adjusting screw with a screwdriver, lock the jam
nut into place. Replace acorn nut on adjusting screw.
NOTE: When checking the boom propel system, install gauge in
boom control valve test adapter and follow the instructions
listed above.
