Our Family 2013-2014 Annual Report
New Beginnings...Strong Communities r Family Annual Report 2014 Our Vision Making our community a better place to live, to grow up, and to grow older. Our Mission To support children and youth, to serve families and elders, and to strengthen community connections. Our Values Integrity; fiscal responsibility; transparency; quality services that make a difference delivered with passion, professionalism and respect; collaborative, innovative and responsive programs; teamwork and diversity among staff and volunteers. 2 From the Executive Director... Working Together Today and Tomorrow Once annually Our Family Services puts together a “snapshot” of the past year. Our finances are tracked on a JulyJune fiscal year and we use that as our annual report frame. Our intent is to provide a window into the lives of the people we serve in our community – our neighbors, work colleagues, and those most vulnerable. With your support and partnership, we served more than 7,000 individuals in twelve months – children, young adults, families and elders. Stories, numbers and graphs are some ways to communicate the essential and caring services provided by our more than eighty staff members and two hundred volunteers. Simultaneously, we are a dynamic organization serving an ever-changing community. We are concerned for individuals in need right now, and about reducing that need next year. We are interested in how to improve our current services, and in what evidence-based programs need to come next. We embrace the importance of using good data to make wise decisions. We appreciate the importance of listening to community members, our funders, our clients, and our donors to help shape the long-term impact of our work. On behalf of our Board of Directors and all of our staff, thank you for your support of Our Family Services. We look forward to a continued partnership serving our community and making a positive difference every day. Patti Caldwell, MSW Executive Director 3 Volunteers of the Year 2014 Our Family honored two outstanding Tucson institutions at our Spring Luncheon in April – O’Rielly Chevrolet and Angel Charity for Children, Inc. We were pleased to showcase our strong partnership with both organizations, who are making an amazing difference here in Tucson. Pictured: Rob Draper, General Manager of O’Rielly Chevrolet at last year’s Pictures of Hope Reception. Pictures of Hope is an educational photography program for children created by photojournalist and author Linda Solomon. Sponsored by Chevrolet nationally, Chevrolet dealers across the country devote their time to this program by helping homeless and at-risk children capture their dreams with a camera. Here in Tucson, O’Rielly Chevrolet is the Pictures of Hope partner dealership. Our Family is proud to honor Rob Draper and O’Rielly Chevrolet for supporting the dreams of homeless children. Thanks to O’Rielly Chevrolet for giving the Pictures of Hope project a home in Tucson, for hosting photojournalism sessions and Meet the Young Artist parties, and for personally mentoring kids at risk. Pictured: Erin Vincent, Amanda Saffer & Michelle Brown 4 Our Family is proud to honor Angel Charity for Children, Inc. for their tireless efforts to help us build a desperately-needed new crisis shelter for Tucson’s homeless, runaway and abandoned youth ages 12 to 17. When Our Family approached Angel Charity for help making our vision of a new Reunion House shelter for homeless youth a reality, we were sheltering 9 young people every night in a 4-bedroom aging house with insufficient space, storage, kitchen and bath facilities. The membership of Angel Charity recognized the urgency of the need for a larger, more efficient shelter and went to work on their behalf. To the incredible members and leadership of Angel Charity, we offer our sincere and heartfelt thanks for your encouragement, your hard work, and your dedication to making life better for Pima County’s children. Reunion House “The House That Angels Built” 232 clients served Reunion House is a 20-bed crisis shelter for runaway and homeless youth ages 12 to 17, including youth in the care of the child welfare system who have been removed from unsafe homes or are in transition between placements and need a safe, supervised place to stay. Arizona leads the nation in the number of children per capita in group or shelter care, with more than 16,000 children in care as of mid-2014 – an increase of nearly 50% in 4 years. In Pima County, there are five times as many foster children as foster homes available. Reunion House is the only emergency shelter for 12 to 17 year-olds in Pima County working with the state to keep these children safe until a permanent home can be found. © 2013 Arizona Daily Star IMPACT STAT: Within three days of entering the program, 86% of youth at Reunion House are enrolled in, and attending school. © 2013 Arizona Daily Star SUCCESS STORY: Pictured: Patti Caldwell, Executive Director of Our Family along with staff and stakeholders at Reunion House. Reunion House is one of only 11 buildings in Tucson to have been awarded Gold LEED Certification by the U.S. Green Building Council. SUCCESS STORY: One parent of a youth who stayed at Reunion House said this in a letter: “[When we heard] about your facility it was like a light in the darkness we were experiencing and we can never thank you enough for helping us.” 5 Homeless Youth Services 2,186 clients served Comprised of Teens in Transition, CommonUnity Program, and Street Outreach, Homeless Youth Services reaches out to youth across the Tucson metro area. The Teens in Transition program offers emergency shelter, housing, and supportive services to homeless youth ages 18 to 21, including youth who are pregnant or have children, and case management to younger teens. Youth can remain in our programs for up to 2 years while they gain skills and work toward self-sufficiency. CommonUnity housing program offers hope for homeless young mothers and their children through case management, counseling, and life and parenting skills education. Street Outreach distributes emergency supplies and information to youth living on the streets. In all program areas our GED instructor works with youth individually and in small groups to help youth prepare for and pass the GED exam. Thank you to the Women’s Foundation of Southern Arizona and Ellen Kaye for supporting GED instruction and the economic independence of these women and their families. IMPACT STAT: Five women who obtained their GEDs through the Teens in Transition program this year will earn an average of $11,000 more per year as a result. IMPACT STAT: 100% of youth contacted through Street Outreach received direct basic needs assistance. SUCCESS STORY: Elliott is one of those youth whose life was changed for the good through his involvement with Teens In Transition. In talking about his journey he said, “Without Our Family I probably would never have found a way home. I’d probably be on the streets. I might be dead. I’m pretty strong, but I was close to hitting rock bottom...thank you for giving me a chance to become the person I am today.” 6 Homeless Family Services 816 clients served We offer prevention services, emergency shelter, short-term supported housing programs, and affordable housing options with no time limit to families experiencing homelessness. This includes families headed by single mothers struggling to survive and people who are working hard to improve their employability, their education, and their ability to support themselves and their children. Our programs work to help homeless families build on their strengths, improve their quality of life, and achieve stability in the long term. SUCCESS STORY: John was out of work after moving to Tucson from another state. He was living in his vehicle and having difficulty surviving. He entered our shelter program and with a place to call home, he was able to get a good job and have his son join him. IMPACT STAT: In partnership with the Primavera Foundation we were able to serve 30% more women and children who were experiencing homelessness this year. IMPACT STAT: In our temporary housing program, 77% of clients found permanent housing once they exited the program. SUCCESS STORY: Maria lost her job of nine years and entered our shelter program with her 16-year–old son. After just three months of help from Our Family, she was able to stabilize her income and transfer the apartment lease into her name. 7 Center for Community Dialogue 2,224 clients served The Center for Community Dialogue builds the capacity of individuals and groups to discuss issues, resolve conflicts, build consensus and make decisions through training and services in a variety of effective communication techniques. SUCCESS STORY: Center staff and volunteers conducted a three-day Eldercare Mediation with a very large family and helped them come to recognize each other’s viewpoints and ultimately agree on how to help meet their aging parent’s needs. SUCCESS STORY: Over 260 people attended the Ken Cloke Lecture Series hosted by the Center which covered conflict resolution, workplace bullying and mediation. IMPACT STAT: Studies show that US employees spend the equivalent of 385 million working days each year engaged in conflict, at a cost of $359 billion in wages. IMPACT STAT: The Center is successful due in large part to the 80 trained volunteers who are committed to helping others have meaningful conversations through Community Forums and deal with conflict through training and mediation services. 8 Counseling 463 clients served Our counseling programs teach people new skills to live better lives. We offer marriage counseling, family counseling, and one-on-one sessions with children, teens, adults, or seniors. Last year marked the successful conclusion of our parenting program. Therapists also supervise visits between parents and children. IMPACT STAT: 100% of clients in our counseling program who completed their course of treatment achieved at least 80% of the goals in their plan. SUCCESS STORY: A 17-year-old mother was transformed from a shy teenage girl into an outgoing and responsible parent. Information & Referral Resources 83,391 clients served Information & Referral Resources is the southern Arizona partner in the 2-1-1 Arizona system. Housed at Community Information and Referral, this system ensures that people in need of resources and guidance in how to access them can get the help they need by dialing 2-1-1 or searching the online database at www.211arizona.org. IMPACT STAT: Over 400 Directory of Community Resources 2014 were distributed to social service agencies and behavioral health professionals last year. 9 Prevention 677 clients served In Prevention, we help children and adults build positive, healthy relationships and avoid risky behaviors such as bullying, violence, and drug and alcohol abuse. La Escuelita is an afterschool literacy and prevention program for children in grades K-5 in South Tucson at the House of Neighborly Service. Las Comadritas provides recreation and congregate meals for South Tucson seniors, who meet twice-weekly for lunch, crafts and outings. Our Drug Free Communities program helps youth and families in Tucson’s 29th Street Corridor build community and avoid drug and alcohol abuse. SUCCESS STORY: Pablo is a La Escuelita participant who now has an optimistic outlook on school and an increased focus on homework and reading, largely because of the supportive routine that promotes IMPACT STAT: literacy as fun and the encouraging Research shows that children who don’t read well by 3rd network made up of family members, grade are four times less likely to graduate from high school. and Prevention staff and interns. Senior Companions 461 clients served Our Senior Companion program utilizes senior volunteers who offer services that allow homebound elders to continue living independently, out of institutionalized care, for as long as possible. IMPACT STAT: Senior Companion volunteers provided 46,000 hours of companionship to vulnerable elders and respite for caregivers in Tucson last year. They have dedicated more than 500,000 hours of service since the program started in 2001. SUCCESS STORY: Beatriz, having lived through a time of loneliness and depression, saw an ad for the Senior Companion program while riding the bus. After signing up and becoming a Senior Companion she said, “It was the best thing I did in years! Now…if I cry it is because I am happy—they are tears of joy!” 10 Who We Serve: People Served By Program Our Family staff and volunteers served 7,059 people last year Who We Served by Program Counseling 463 7% Prevention 677 10% Senior Companion Reunion House 461 232 6% 3% Homeless Youth Services 2,186 31% Homeless Family Services 816 12% Center for Community Dialogue 2,224 31% Who We Served by Age Group 60+ 16% 22-59 16% 0-12 14% 13-17 25% 18-21 29% *We assisted an additional 83,391 people in Southern Arizona with access to resources through Information and Referral Resources. 11 Financial FinancialStatement Statement: Revenue Revenue Government Grants & Contracts $3,809,035 Capital Campaign $ 305,102 Contributions & Grants $ 768,356 Program Income $ 278,973 In-Kind Donations $ Fundraising $ 72,609 Other Revenue $ 28,242 United Way & Investment Income $ TOTAL 88,696 In-Kind Donations 2% Other Revenue 1% Fundraising 1% Program Income 5% Contributions & Grants 14% United Way & Investment Income 1% Government Grants & Contracts 70% Capital Campaign 6% 60,430 $5,411,443 Expense Expense Homeless Youth Services $1,546,687 Homeless Family Services $1,248,552 Clinical Services $ 784,558 Management & General $ 768,811 Community Services $ 423,041 Fundraising $ 294,640 Senior Services $ 278,442 TOTAL $5,344,731 Fundraising Community 6% Services Management & 8% General 14% Senior Services 5% Clincial Services 15% Homeless Youth Services 29% Homeless Family Services 23% Net Assets $6,198,972 Financial information listed above is pre-audit.
