Parishioners enjoyed delightful music, delicious food and raffle. In Ecuador, a grand procession honoring the Virgin of the Cloud is held every year on January 1 in the city of Azogues. In recent years devotion to the Virgin of the Cloud has also spread to the United States. At The Church of St. Bernard the Virgin of the Cloud Group meets the last Saturday of the month. The Pastor’s Page A Thought for 2013 If I were to offer you more than a half a million dollars to spend over the next year you could probably think of a thousand ways to spend it. It would be a little bit like hitting the lottery. Whether we realize it or not, every New Years Day we hit a jackpot of another sort. We hit a jackpot of time. Every January 1st we are presented with a handsome sum of minutes, which is ours to spend during the next 12 months. How many? 525,600 minutes. That is how many minutes are in a regular calendar year. That is how many minutes God will give us in 2013 to continue building our lives. Instead of imagining how we might spend $525,600, we might look at how we are going to spend the next 525,600 minutes. It’s a lot of time, but like our money, it always seems that there is never enough of it. We struggle to find the time to do everything that we want to do. We can look at the way we spend our money, and that is a good thing to do. But an even better thing to do is to look at the way we spend our time. Money is something that we can replace and earn more of, but we can’t always do that with our time. Some people may have more money than we do, other people have less money than we do. When it comes to time, we are all the same, God gives all the same amount every year, until of course our time runs out …which someday it will. If you had to sit down with God today and account for your time would you be happy with your results? The biggest question that God will have for all of us in the end, is not how we spent our money, but how we spent our time. And as we begin a new year, a question that many people are asking is, “what am I going to do with my time”. It is a good question to ask, if the question is asked in the right context. The right context being, “How would God want me to spend my time.” Instead of asking the question, “What are some of the things that I would like to do over the coming year, we can ask the question, “What are some of the things that God would like me to do.” If our resolutions come down to eating less, exercising more, or worrying less, maybe we are too caught up in our trendy culture. Those resolutions aren’t bad, but they’re not enough. We are capable much more. We know it and God knows it. If this were your last year on this earth, you would probably be embarrassed if someone in your family eulogized you by saying, I will always remember him for the way he exercised and dieted. He ran three miles everyday also had a salad for lunch. Big Deal! In English, the month January got its name from the Roman Pagan God Janus. Janus had two faces, one looking back and the other looking forward. At the start of a New Year we are all like, Janus. We are looking back on the things we did with our time last year and we are looking ahead to the things we will do with our time this coming year. As you reflect upon you plans and goals for the coming year consider the following story: During the time of a water shortage, a woman went looking for a vessel with which to draw water at a distant well. The first vessel she found was full of milk, and the second was full of oil. The third was full of grain. Eventually she found an empty vessel, which she was able to use to fill with water to keep her family healthy. As short and simple as the story may be it contains a profound and salvific truth. The empty vessel was the only useful vessel for the simple reason that it was hollow and empty. It’s hollowness and emptiness is what gave the vessel its capacity to receive, carry, and hold water. The Blessed Mother’s greatness consisted in the way she emptied herself for God, on every level. She was always available for God. She was like that empty vessel that God used to receive, carry, and hold Jesus for us. Over this next year there will be many people who will not be available to God because they will be too full of their own plans. I’m sure Mary had plans for her own life, but she lived by a different philosophy. Her philosophy was “It’s not what I want, but what God wants that matters. Let what God wants be done to me.” Mary offered the gift of her time to God not understanding all the implications of it. She trusted that God knew where it was all going, which God did. She trusted that God would give her all the help she would need, and God did that also. As we begin a new year, let us be that empty vessel that God can use in whatever way is necessary. God is always looking for human vessels, that is, human beings to fill with His grace, love and mercy. Spend as much of the 525,600 minutes of 2013 letting God do just that …and it will be a good year. -Fr. -Padre Morris Page 3 RCIA Blood Drive at St. Bernard’s His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan invites those catechumens (unbaptized persons) who participated in their parish Catechumenate (RCIA) process and are ready to celebrate the sacraments of Christian Initiation this Easter to formally celebrate the Rite of Election on the First Sunday of Lent, February 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Cathedral of Saint Patrick New York City. SUNDAY, JANUARY 6, 2013 SOLEMNITY OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Do something great for God In the next month the church will celebrate three epiphanies—“manifestations”—of Jesus: Epiphany today, the Baptism of the Lord next Sunday, and the Presentation of the Lord on February 2. Each of these events reveals something about Jesus: that he is the Messiah, that he is God’s beloved Son, and that he was consecrated from the beginning for his great task. What’s more, these revelations about Christ say that God’s salvation is for all. The world is not the enemy of the people of God; it’s the fertile ground on which to build God’s kingdom. In this Year of Faith when the church is calling for a “New Evangelization,” and as a new year begins, what can you do to participate in this great mission? TODAY’S READINGS: Isaiah 60:1-6; Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6; Matthew 2:1- 12 (20) “Nations shall walk by your light.” MONDAY, JANUARY 7 FEAST OF RAYMOND OF PEÑAFORT, PRIEST Sound the canons! In the 2,000-year history of the church, few people have had a longer lasting impact than Saint Raymond of Peñafort, whose effort back in 1230 to pull together the many legal traditions in the church into one unified body of work set the standard for canon law that has endured for nearly 800 years. Though it might seem like an esoteric topic far removed from your daily life, canon law helps shape the customs and traditions of the church. For example, we learn from canon law that the Christian faithful “are obliged to assist with the needs of the Church and to promote social justice and assist the poor from their own resources.” And “sacred ministers are to hold the function of preaching in esteem since the people of God are first brought together by the word of the living God.” Find more rules to live by at vatican.va/archive/ ENG1104/_INDEX.HTM. TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 3:22-4:6; Matthew 4:12-17, 23-25 (212) “He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues.” TUESDAY, JANUARY 8 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY Be an inspired—and inspiring—leader It must have been tempting for those closest to Jesus to let him do all the talking, deciding, praying, and healing. After all, he was the one with all the know-how and the power. Jesus was aware of that, of course, and so regularly encouraged his followers by telling them, for example, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these” (John 14:12). Leaders can either empower or disempower. Today is a good day to consider how you guide your children, employees, students, team. Do you do things for them, or do you motivate and encourage them to try themselves? TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 4:7-10; Mark 6:34-44 (213) “Give them some food yourselves.” WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 9 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY Don’t fear to love While we admire people who seem fearless, there is something humanizing about a movie-hero like Indiana Jones and his sheepish hatred (read: fear) of snakes. He makes us less-heroic types feel more accepting of our own fears and failures. But in the First Letter of John, what the writer presents as the opposite of fear is not courage, but love. In the afterglow of Christmas, we ought to remember again and again the truth Christmas impressed upon us: that God so loved the world. And to love one another, scripture reminds us, is to see the face of God incarnate. TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 4:11-18; Mark 6:45-52 (214) “There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear.” THURSDAY, JANUARY 10 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY Did Jesus know how to read? You may think that a strange question—various scripture passages say he did, and how could he not be able to do something that most schoolchildren in the U.S. today have learned by the age of 9 or 10? But that wasn’t always the case; in fact for most of recorded history, being able to read and write was reserved to a small, elite segment of society. In the Roman Empire at the time Jesus lived, estimates say that only 3-10 percent of the population was literate. Judaism has always emphasized reading and study of the Torah, however, so it should not surprise us that Jesus likely could read—he certainly read the human heart with complete understanding. What does he find written on your heart? TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 4:19-5:4; Luke 4:14-22a (215) “He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah.” FRIDAY, JANUARY 11 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY It’s time for God Even Jesus led a hectic life. Teaching at the synagogue one moment, healing the sick and broken-hearted at another, wrangling with crowds at still another. On top of that he was not exempt from the ordinary stuff of eating, sleeping, working, and the like just because he was God. Scripture makes no mention of an angelic personal assistant managing behind-the-biblical-scenes tasks for Jesus. What Jesus did have going for him was a commitment to prayer—an ability that fortunately is available to all of us. Jesus took time to pray, often withdrawing to a solitary place. It’s not the easiest thing to find space in a demanding schedule, but we must also figure out ways to be alone with God. TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 5:5-13; Luke 5:12-16 (216) “Great crowds assembled to listen to him and to be cured of their ailments, but he would withdraw to deserted places to pray.” SATURDAY, JANUARY 12 CHRISTMAS WEEKDAY All you need to know Human beings are obsessed with organizing knowledge. Great thinkers from Aristotle to Dewey and his decimal system to the folks at Google and Wikipedia have tackled the problem of how to organize all human data. We develop knowledge bases at our companies and attach labels to our contacts in LinkedIn. We alphabetize, number, and categorize every piece of information that passes our way. Our massive efforts to understand what we experience in the world are useful and fascinating, but in the end the most essential truth we know is: “God is love.” Further, as Saint John points out in his First Epistle: “We know that we belong to God.” File that away for future reference. TODAY’S READINGS: 1 John 5:14-21; John 3:22-30 (217) “We also know that the Son of God has come.” ©2013 by TrueQuest Communications, Page 7 Mass Intentions for the Week Last Sunday’s Collection : Saturday, January 5, 2013 5:30 Virginia Kernathan Sunday, January 6, 2013 9:00 John Giusto First Collection: $3,599 Second Collection: $1,037 10:30 Matthew Pabis (Living) 12:00 For the people Monday, January 7, 2013 9:00 Communion Service Tuesday, January 8, 2013 9:00 Communion Service Today’s Second Collection is for Maintenance.
